obama backs the mosque. for the first time weighing in on the building of the center in lower manhattan, two blocks from the site of 9/11. >> i believe that muslims have the right to practice their religion, as everyone else in this country. >> we'll look at the controversy and politics behind it. swept away, battered by heavy rain iowa struggles the in the aftermath of historic floods. tens of thousands of people without drinking water. live on the scene with the very latest. the "n" word apologizing for her radio rant in which she uses
5:01 am
the offensive term not once but 11 times. is the "n" word ever okay to use and if so by whom? we're asking this morning. and you've seen a human body but never like. this we'll take a journey into what scientists call the cave, early this saturday morning, what scientists call the cave, early this saturday morning, august 14th, 2010. captioning funded by cbs hi, welcome to "the early show" on a saturday morning. we want to talk about weather this morning. you talked about country again another weekend and all these weather issues from like we mentioned a second ago in the open, the flooding in iowa, feels-like temperatures in oklahoma today near 117. look at these pictures right here, this is hayfield,

minnesota. >> my home state. >> a tornado whipping through parts of the state and severe weather in wisconsin. we'll talk about all this weather plaguing the country when we come back. >> it is tornado season in minnesota, chris. we watched them all the time from our garage. but first this morning president obama supports a plan to build a muslim community center in ground zero in new york. his announcements at a white house event last night marking the muslim holy month of ramadan puts him at the center of a heated issue here in new york. our correspondent reports. >> reporter: stepping into a controversy the white house previously ducked, the president told guests religious freedom not the politics at the moment make the decision on the mofng clear. >> this is america. our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakeable. the principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this
5:03 am
country and that they will not be treated differently by their government is essential to who we are. >> reporter: there was a time president obama said that building catholic churches and jewish synagogues sparked local opposition. many republicans and one major jewish group announced their opposition to the mosque built two blocks from the world trade center site in a building actually damaged in the 9/11 attack. >> but, let me be clear, as a citizen and as president, i believe that muslims have the right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. >> reporter: michael bloomberg endorsed the project and applauded his statement but polls show it to be broadly unpopular. >> joining us from washington to discuss the president's statement and other political matters, reporter jonathan allen of politico. good morning, jonathan. >> good morning. >> why is the 79 weighing in on
5:04 am
this now? we were told a couple weeks ago he wouldn't even put himself in the debate? >> it's interesting. he really could have stayed away from it. what the white house said before obviously this isn't a matter for the president, he doesn't dictate it or really doesn't have any affect whether new york allows this to go forward. that said, perhaps it is a matter of principle for the president, this isn't polling very well. but, i think that given his campaign and the way he campaigned, and the way that he's tried to conduct himself as president, it's not surprising that this is his position perhaps it's surprising he chose now to come forward witt because the politics may not be good for him. >> there are opposition saying he is caving to political correctness. is that something that's going on here? >> i did not know necessarily it is caving to political correctness. if you listen to what he actually said, particularly the first part where he said that there shouldn't be any --
5:05 am
essentially saying there shouldn't be checks on people's ability to practice their religion, i don't think that is a particularly controversial view in this country, embedded in our first amendment to the constitution and it's aside from the question that i think a lot of opponents have focused on, not what you're allowed to do under our rules and laws but maybe what you should do in terms of keeping the peace. >> in addition to seeing these pictures of obama talking about the mosque near ground zero we are also going to probably see in the next 24 hours or so pictures of obama and his family visiting the gulf. what do you think that's going to do, is it going to accomplish anything here for this 24-hour jaunt they're taking? >> i don't know that it accomplishs a whole lot for the gulf coast in terms of actually getting more tourists there. i think folks planning to go for summer vacations and often do will continue to go there and -- but people may stay away in they're unhappy about the situation, the possibility of oil washes up or watch those videos.
5:06 am
i think what it really does, it sends a signal to the gulf businesses the president stands with them it's an important symbolic thing for folks there and of course for the president he's going to a swing state, florida, that other states in the gulf coast are pret republican so any chance to go to florida and show his face there and especially something that's not particularly partisan but, rather, an issue of florida's economy and tourism i think that's probably seen as a positive in the white house. >> we only have a minute here but how much of this symbolism, the visit to the gulf, his stance on the mosque, how much can that potentially overcome what's going on with the economy now with unemployment at 9.5% and sticking there? >> the economy is the giant issue all across the country he and that's going to be what dictates the november election midterms and how democrats do, where the economy is and i don't think, you know, either of these things really affect that. >> jonathan allen, thanks so much. now to chris. >> thank you, rebecca.

a funeral scheduled for a teenager from des moines. many people were driven from their homes still can't go back and in some places have no drinking water and the damage keeps on rising. our correspondents with the very latest for us. >> reporter: good morning. the skunk river here in colfax finally crested this morning just under 24 feet. this water is as high as anyone here can remember it ever beening. but the good news is the water has finally stopped rising. residents here never thought they would see the skunk river this high especially not twice in one week. three days of heavy rains sent the river to record levels wednesday, flooding some 200 homes including wes and jen snyder's newly remodeled basement. they spent friday pumping water out even as the river rose again threatening to pour more in. >> you just silt there and watch

and are helpless. >> reporter: across the street chuck brewer lost his home to the last big flood here in 1993. rebuilt and now worries about losing it again. >> there is no way for the rain to go. >> reporter: much of the heavy rain has moved out of iowa but the storms have taken a toll. a 16-year-old girl was killed wednesday when floodwaters swept her car off a road in altoona. in several communities across iowa, home and business owners will spend days cleaning up the mess left behind n. des moines, officials went house to house friday to make sure residents could safely return to this flooded neighborhood. >> hi there. would you like water? >> reporter: in ames, 55,000 residents are still drinking bottled water after floods broke eight water mains and drained the city's water towers. back here in colfax, residents are eager to start cleaning up this mess, affecting about 200 homes. i can tell you that many of the people who live in these homes
5:09 am
are sleeping in them overnight, they are in them right now them. the real good news here in iowa, they're not expecting any more heavy rains through the weekend. chris? >> don teeing in iowa for us this morning, thank you. as the first family head to the gulf coast -- the administration's point man for the oil spill is telling bp it isn't finished just yet when it comes to plugging the well once and for all. our correspondent with the latest on that story for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, chris. there was debate whether to finish the relief well mostly within bp but now is over. by late next week bp really ought to be ready to cut into the broken well and kill it for good. since july 15th the broken well has leak nod new oil but officials decided friday killing it altogether still needs one more step, finishing the relief well, plugging it with heavy mud and concrete three miles below the gulf surface. >> how it gets finished will be
5:10 am
determined on risk metgation and a way forward discussed now. the relief well will be finished, we will kill the well. >> reporter: this thursday they pressure tested the well to see if last week's static well plugged it for good. results were inconclusive. the releaf well should be the final kill. >> i think the risk is pretty small. they've taken their time about doing it and doing it correctly. we can walk away from this and say this sad tragedy is over once and for all. >> reporter: for three months they watched more than 200 million gallons flood into the gulf. he wants peace of mind knowing the well will never leak again. >> i think they need to finish what they started. can't be too cautious. >> reporter: president obama is taking his family for a quick weekend florida getaway in panama city beach, florida, obviously promoting gulf
5:11 am
tourism. the big question is whether he will actually go in the water. chris? >> mark, let me ask you a quick question back to the relief well if a second y. was there debate about finishing it? was there risk involved here? know, is it necessary? the well hasn't leaked since july 15th and static kill seemed to be working so well but there is a low risk, the vibration from the relief well could possibly undue some of the plugs the static kill put in place but considered manageable and this debate is over once and for all and the releaf well will go on. >> what are the people's concern there now as we move forward? >> reporter: big concern, chris, for the most part is that bp's now going to pack up its tent and go home. this widespread distrust of bp along the gulf coast believed that bp cannot be trusted to do the right thing unless the government keeps the pressure on, one of the reasons president
5:12 am
obama is in florida today, trying to reassure folks, look, we aren't going to forget about you and try to bring this place to where it was before. >> is that the photo-op we'll need to see or the people of florida will need to see the president and family going in the water? >> reporter: i think it would probably help. the big thing that coast needs, though, is just a continued presence by the government and by bp to get this thing back to normal. i mean there is an environmental mess still out there and cleanup to be done but an economic catastrophe, too, the real issue, where do we go from here and get these struggling businesses back on their feet. >> all right. good talking with you. another look at the morning's top stories. hi, elaine. >> there is no end to pakistan's misery as new flooding hits the southern part of the country. pakistan's prime minister says 20 million have now been left homeless and the u.n. has confirmed one case of cholera

controversy over the "n" word erupted once more this time courtesy of radio host dr. laura sles jerp. take a look. >> i'm having an issue with my husband. i am black and he's white. >> tuesday after an african-american woman called her to say she was troubled by comments made by friends of her white husband, schlesinger said there was a double standard when it comes to the "n a "word. >> turn on hbo listen to a black comment and all you hear is [ bleep ], [ bleep ], [ bleep ]. i don't get it. >> it led to an on-air argument. >> i can't believe someone like sup on the radio spewing out the "n" word and i hope everybody heard it. >> they did. [ bleep ], [ bleep ] shgz [ bleep ] [ bleep ] -- >> won't day later she backtracked saying she was sorry. >> i didn't intend to hurt people.

5:39 am
dehumanizing black people, making us feel less than human, making us feel second-class citizens. it came out of slavery at a time when we weren't considered whole human beings, so i guess my first question to dr. laura, why do you want to use it so much? i mean, she had her chance and got to say it six times but what's the burning desire of wanting to use the "n" word, i don't get it. >> the apology that followed it up? >> kind of a non-apology apology. she said she didn't intend to hurt anybody and trying to make a philosophical point but i've looked through notes of her site. i can't find the philosophical point anywhere. i can't find it. i mean, i understand she thought because she heard some comics saying n, n, n on hbo maybe she thought that was acceptable but for every person that might use it, there are millions, tens of millions of black people who don't find it acceptable. i wasn't raised to use that word. it's a bad word.
5:40 am
it's got violence and lynching and being, you know, all these bad things associated with it. >> is there someone out there that could communicate that message to the broader public, do you think, that would make an impact that would say this word spt right to use and would be the right kind of face or name behind that thinking? >> well, you know, it's difficult because not all black people think alike about this issue. there are a lot of people, some of them comediennes, some even sociologi sociologists feel like the idea of taking that word, reclaiming it but using it a lot and will lessen its power, how is that working for them? i don't think it is working so well. it is kind of a liquid issue, you know, it's just strange to think anybody would want to associate themselves or use a word with that kind of loaded history. i -- and -- >> does it surprise you, then, the advertisers are standing by in this case? >> oh, no. i wish it d. for starters, i want to know why this poor black

woman called dr. laura for advice. that's already crazy. and where did she get her degree? you know, i have other questions like that, is she like a doctor of love or something like that? i have no idea. but, it seems like the more outrageous talk show people act on the radio -- >> the more viewership, the more listeners? >> exactly, the more advertisers all seems money-driven. we're living in this time where bad behavior seems to keep getting rewarded. look, we are all talking about dr. laura, whose ratings weren't so good to start with, i don't think. >> what should be the consequence in this case? >> it's -- you know, just saying she should be fired or something like that isn't enough. i guess i'd like to see her sit down and maybe watch a documentary like "eyes on the prize" a six-part documentary about the civil rights movement. maybe then when she sees people like bull connor and george wallace using the "n" word she'll want to use it less. i hope she gets over that. >> nancy, thank you for being with us this morning. >> thank you.
