"this broadcast realtime captioned by becky lyon." good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. a uc berkeley graduate who was imprisoned in iran for more than a year today pleaded with iran to flee her two companions. as don knapp reports, her emotional press conference provided a chilling look at their lives inside an iranian prison. >> i'm very strong for shane and josh because i know they need me to be and i know that i need to do everything i can for them. >> reporter: sarah, freed from an iranian prison last month, is now campaigning for the release of her companions. shane bauer and josh petall. they were hiking when iran says the three went over the border and were arrested and imprisoned as spies. >> coming out of prison i'm shocked and dismayed in ways that there could still be questions in iran and around the world about who we are, about what we were doing in

northern iraq. >> speaking in berkley today she said they had done nothing wrong, had come to the middle east because of their passion for peace. >> we were forced apart for the first time and we clung to each other. we screamed because we didn't want to be separated. we were separated and we were thrown in different cells. all of us were alone for the next month. >> reporter: in prison they learned to stay connected she says even when they couldn't see one another. it sustains them even now. >> i can see them in their small cell with very little sunlight. they get out only once a day for an hour into a court-yard. i can see how small and how trapped they are and i know how they feel. >> reporter: in prison when she

sang for her friends they would ask her to sing louder. she says she can still hear them. >> i can hear shane and josh telling me now to speak louder for them and to ask the world to please help me and help us to release them and to ask the iranian leaders to have compassion on my fiance and my friend and to please set them free. >> reporter: she says she believes she was released on humanitarian grounds and thanks a worldwide number of people that spoke out to campaign for her release. a rally at uc berkeley to protest elimination of baseball and other sports programs. cal announced due to budget problems the university would cut baseball, men's and women's gymnastics and demoted rugby to

varsity club status. >> it is part of the fabric of this university and tradition. if it comes down to money we have lots of ways to put together an endowment. if we have to we will do that. >> cutting the sports the college says would trim $4 million from the school's athletic budget. a powerful manhole explosion rocked a san francisco neighborhood tonight. it was caught on camera as it happened. >> reporter: i'm here in the financial district of san francisco where this explosion happened at around 4:00 p.m. let me give you the lay of the land. that is a manhole cover that blew off earlier this afternoon and you can see there is windows boarded up here king george restaurant. that entire window was blown out by the force of the blast. now, most of samsung between california and clay was blocked off early this evening and we

had a personal experience here driving coming back to the station. we saw smoke coming from a manhole, and my photographer and i thought it was suspicious. we pulled over and my photographer got out to start rolling video on it. and then we heard this. a scary sound. the kind that has you ducking for cover. i was calling 911 afraid another cover could blow. fire and smoke coming from a manhole at the time. pg&e has not said too much about this. we did see two workers around the corner at the same time as the explosion so stop sign unclear if there was any work going on at the time. we did speak with a bartender who works around the corner. here is his story. >> essentially the lights at the irish times bar were flickering. we smelled smoke. i went to see what was happening. there were flames coming out much -- out of one of the manholes. all of a sudden we heard a

boom. then a shot 10 feet in the air. some of windows broke and then pandemonium broke out. >> reporter: the fire department brought in carbon dioxide to help distinguish that underground fire. they say it was an electrical vault that blew with three circuits but the investigation is up to pg&e. in san francisco cbs5. another nightclub shooting has left a man seriously wounded. shots were fired just after midnight. a 23-year-old man was hit. his injuries are described as life threatening. no one else was hit. the gunman got away. police are looking for a man who tried to kidnap two young sisters. the girls were walking their dog near sunnyview drive and knobhill avenue yesterday when the man drove up and told the girls he would shoot their relatives if they didn't come with him. he grabbed the younger girl but

the older sister pulled her away. grey goatee. drove an older model green four- door jeep with tinted windows. the license plate was blue with a g and a 5 on it. anyone with information is asked to call penole police. a young wind surfer was rescued after spending more than seven hours adrift in the san francisco bay. he was last seen about 6:00 p.m. last night. the coastguard launched a helicopter and three vessels to search the area. he was discovered by the san mateo bridge around 1:30 a.m. he was showing mild signs of hyopthermia but his wet suit protected him. a beaver colony causing problems. how a northern california neighborhood helped stay the animals' execution. the deafening roar that is music to bay area ears.

meg whitman coming from the brown campaign. more fall out tonight from a derogatory comment about meg whitman coming from the brown campaign. >> she is a whore. >> a whore. >> i'm going to use that. >> cut a secret deal to protect the patients. >> jerry brown says it is an aide caught on a voice mail recording. his campaign issued an apology but tonight some democrats are demanding brown himself apologize. whitman's campaign joined the chore us of critics saying brown is "continuing to insult the voters of casino by avoiding taking responsibility for his own actions and the actions of his campaign staff." now that the state budget is wrapped up governor arnold schwarzenegger is headed to rush yavment the -- to russia.

wanting to connecticut silicon valley leaders with their russian delegates. he left today for a five-day trip. a badly injured sea lion continues to recover tonight from surgery. a reconstructive plastic surgeon was brought in to repair the muzzle of the sea lion nicknamed sergeant nevis. it required closing a crater like wound just under the sea lion's eye. a family of beavers living on lake tahoe's north shore has received a death sentence. placer counties officials say they are a nuisance causing property damage and flooding. their solution is to trap them and kill them. locals who love the beavers beg the county to consider other options.

weather. >> fleet week and lots of good things going on and lots of sunshine. outside right now. pretty calm out there right now and not too much in the way of cloud cover. may see a couple of patches of fog beginning to develop out near the coastline. patchy fog trying to form and probably going to see some of that overnight tonight. not going to be too bad and i think sunday is looking pretty good as we will see a whole lot of sunshine. mostly clear inland as you head around the bay area this evening. 60s and 70s out toward the coastline. 50s and 60s. tomorrow here comes that sunshine again after a couple patches of fog. starting off with patchy fog probably ending up with more sunshine by the afternoon. 70s and 80s inside the bay for fleet week and as you head toward the interior valley temperatures in the 80s. 73 in napa. 77 in santa rosa.

50s and 60s back toward the coastline. mid-80s in toward the central valley. high country looking good. lots of sunshine there. about 83 degrees in yosemite. 73 degrees in eureka. high pressure sneaking into the bay area. cold front off the coast. sunshine and warm temperatures. offshore flow setting itself up towards tomorrow night and into monday morning. with that in mind tomorrow we may start out with a couple patches of fog. not going to be much and not around long. beautiful inside the bay. plenty of sunshine in toward the afternoon hours. pretty warm temperatures go along with that. should be about 80 degrees in palo alto tomorrow. 81 in mountainview. 82 degrees in san jose. out toward the coastline looking at upper 60s. as you head towards the east bay those temperatures running

up as high as 86 in brentwood. 86 in pittsburgh. about 79 in oakland. and 78 degrees in alameda. north bay. lots of sunshine coming your way there too. couple of patches of fog out towards the coast. 70s and 80s toward the afternoon hours much as we look out over the next couple days warmer weather heading our way. offshore wind cleaning out the skies. very nice into monday and tuesday. beautiful autumn weather in the bay area. but by wednesday we may see changes. maybe fog beginning to creep in late in the day on wednesday along the coastline. thursday, friday temperatures will cool down in a much different weekend as we head towards next weekend. here is gary with sports. big time pac-10 action in our backyard. always remember the rules that apply to an offside kick. this you have to see. you won't believe it. sports is coming up next. ,,,,

ohio state moving up to number 1 when the new rankings coming out tomorrow. >> how did you knock off alabama? >> this was a fun game. our defense played their hearts out. and our offense had the best game we had ever had here. it was a good win for us. but hopefully we can keep going. >> got to show you this. texas tech and baylor. all stood around the ball looking at it as if it was a punt. scooping it up and going six. that's what he did. the ball didn't go 10 yards but it is still a live ball. if you care texas tech hung on and won the game. baseball now. giants six outs away from taking a 2-0 series lead against the braves but the bull pen which hasn't given up a run in 25 straight innings. delivering a knockout below in the 11th with a shot into the cove off ramon ramirez. braves rallied back to tie it

with three runs against sergio romo and brian wilson. >> anything can happen in the post season. i obviously take full credit. i'm the only one standing on the mound to get that six outs at that particular time and i didn't. >> he has been our guy all year long. no way, shape or form do i think that he shouldn't be out there. he is our guy. >> we are really similar teams. we rely on our pitching. and especially the bull pen. brian wilson was asked a lot tonight to get six outs. more than three outs. braves will be without their closer for the rest of the season. billy wagner fielded a bunt and injured his oblique. bobby cox says the team will wait until tomorrow to decide
