might be on the horizon... good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. they can see the finish line, and victory might be on the horizon. the tea party held a bay area rally that attracted a crowd and it was found more by a common cause than a candidate. and don knapp is live in pleasanton where the crowd was smaller than anticipated. >> reporter: it was billed as the largest rally on the west coast this year. it was supposed to be a spectacular day of patriotic pride and unfortunately they didn't quite get the 20,000 folks that they wanted to get but they got a lot of people full of the tea party spirit and of course we know what the tea party spirit is, and it is getting government off our backs and do something about obama care and cutting taxes and a lot of the parallel values that go along. and a lot of the folks were talking about it today. a great patriotic outpouring of speakers on the podium. and a lot of people in the crowd agreeing with the folks and some of the people had simply come to see what it is

all about and found that there are people just like them and they liked it and liked what they said, and what they were seeing and hearing and not just about being a member of the tea party but finding candidates that spoke about the issues they were concerned about and those are the issues we have been talking about all along with the tea party. even though they didn't get the big crowds that they wanted to get, they certainly found some people that shared the values and were talking things up. and the question is, while the tea party is making waves, is it making waves big enough to sway the political side. ann? >> and don, are people going out and campaigning for these candidates or is it still more of the rallies and just the momentum of their beliefs that they're promoting? >> that's a good question. i haven't seen really tea party folks out on the street campaigning but one woman i ran into for a write-in candidate for superintendent of instruction but i think those kinds of people are working crowds to try to get people to vote and do write-in things. and mostly, it is kind of rah- rah at this point. >> don knapp in pleasanton, thank you very much.

candidates are cramming for the midterms. as in the elections. voter goes to the polls in a little more than two weeks. and catherine brown says democrats and republicans are putting on the full court press. both parties are pulling out their big guns, and president obama stumped in boston saturday, as part of the nationwide blitz to raise money for democrats. and energize an apathetic voting base. >> we will win in november. and all of us together will rebuild the middle class. >> reporter: the president's wife is also starting to hit the campaign trail for the first time in two years. trying to lend her strong approval rating to a number of candidates. on monday, she will campaign in connecticut, and then head here to this new york theater, to headline an event with sara jessica parker and patty labelle. >> and former president bill clinton and vice president joe biden are also making the rounds. and in a frenzied effort to gain some ground. >> man up, harry reid. >> reporter: republicans are

focusing much of their attention on a still sluggish economy, trying to capitalize on voter anger. >> today, unemployment remains at a heart-breaking 9.6%. making this the longest period that unemployment has been at or above 9.5% since the great depression. >> reporter: the tea party movement led by former alaska governor sarah palin has sparked excitement among conservative voters and if it is successful, political experts say be prepared for a different kind of fighting in the nation's capital. >> it is clear that the tea party backed candidates are coming to washington not to play along and we should see some early indications of conflict between the leaders and the new tea party members. >> reporter: democrats are hoping that conflict will splinter the republican party, rather than strengthen it. katherine brown, for cbs news, new york. it is so god -- good to be here. it is like we're walking on

sunshine as we walk in here. >> and sarah palin rallied republicans in southern california this afternoon. at least 1500 people showed up to see the former alaska governor. and vice presidential candidate. gubernatorial candidate meg whitman and senate challenger carly fiorina not among them. former president bill clinton is also in california this weekend. he was in los angeles last night. stumping for gubernatorial candidate jerry brown. he will be in san jose tomorrow night campaigning for brown. and for lieutenant governor candidate gavin newsom. >> it is great to be -- and an oakland woman, killed in a drive-by shooting overnight, was an innocent victim according to investigators. and 29-year-old carolyn howard was on west street about midnight, going out dancing, with some friends. and police say someone in a car sprayed the street with bullets, hitting three men. howard just happened to be standing nearby. police say the wounded men were the target, and they're expected to survive.

well, checking other bay area headlines, a handicapped almeda man is asking for the public's help to recover his specially-equipped van. the 1995 chevy gulf stream looks like this one. except it is green and it has gray striping, and it has a wheelchair lift with darnel dangerfield's wheelchair inside. the license plate number is 9856edp. if you have any information, please call almeda police. walnut creek police have made an arrest in one of the rape cases at the park regency apartments. welcome yokum is charged in the september 16 sexual assault. he lives at the complex. and police say he knew the victims. this june, five women have been assaulted at the same complex. one other man has already been arrested in connection with the three earliest assault cases. and a grove of eucalyptus trees in marin is coming down this weekend. ann wox of larkspur has been fighting her neighbors who say the 28 trees on her property

are a fire danger and a physical threat to the neighborhood because of falling branches. the neighbors took her to court. and won. wolf's efforts to get the state supreme court to hear her case were denied. a victory in the vineyards. the chronicle is reporting state agricultural workers have beaten back the european grate vine moth infestation. 10 counties including several in wine country have reported the pests in the past year leave leading to a quarantine but the program of setting traps appears to be working well enough to save this year's growth. it could be a hiccup for football fans or there could be traffic troubles again, tomorrow, on the san mateo bridge. and it is really just where these tests were not only for the mind but for physically as well. >> preparing for disaster. the coffin -- the dozens of agencies working this weekend to make sure they're ready for the next emergency. >> i'm meteorologist lawrence karnow in the cbs 5 weather center.

temperatures are taking a nose dive today. a lot of clouds outside too. could we see some rain? we will talk about that coming up. ,, [ male announcer ] how can you retire at age 55? just ask jerry brown. he gave california state employees collective bargaining powers. since then the unions have grown stronger and stronger. now state employees can retire at 55 with much of their salary for life. and taxpayers are on the hook for one hundred billion dollars in unfunded pension liabilities. no wonder those unions are 100% behind jerry brown. he'll just spend, and spend, and spend.

are at the state capitol to pay hundreds of uniformed firefighters from across california are at the state capitol to pay tribute to firefighters who lost their lives trying to keep our state safe. 31 firefighters names were added to the california firefighters memorial. governor arnold schwarzenegger attended the event including family and friends of the victims. nine firefighters died in the past year. chemical attack, mass casualties and school takeovers can happen anywhere at any time and teams from around the world today are in the bay area to learn how to handle these kind of emergencies. elizabeth wenger gives us a look at their intense training. >> reporter: teams of armed law enforcement rapel down the smoke ventilation shaft inside the transamerica tower. from the 48th floor down to the 44th, they're sneaking up on an intrude wer a gun. >> -- intruder with a gun. >> but them in real life buildings and raoeld life airplanes and boats and

whatever they would really face and so if they have to face it, they will be ready. >> reporter: bart of a large exercise called urban shield. police and sheriff's departments from all over the bay area, and the fbi and international agencies participate. officials say the training works. like when the bart shooting verdict came down for johannes mehserle mehserle. >> not only did about 25% of the urban shield participants knew oakland, they knew where to go and what to do. >> reporter: they will re-enact dozens of different scenarios in 48 hours, without sleep to terrorism to hostage takeovers. >> very selective. and the guys you saw today, they're the best of the best. >> there are four hostages. two county supervisors. and two civilian employees. >> reporter: at san francisco city hall the drill starts with a debriefing. after several city supervisors are said to be taken hostage. teams move in to control the situation. while others stand guard. and the action is all captured on video camera to learn what

works and what didn't. >> and it is really just a huge test for the mind and physically as well. i think it is great. and it is awesome. >> in san francisco, elizabeth wenger, cbs 5. one other drill in oakland today, where an urban shield team participated in a scenario where the biological weapons were released in the city. the team set up a mock field hospital and treated victims and managed crowds and volunteer actors made it look real and even unpredictable for the teams and the officials say even though the scene was chaotic, everything went well. and san francisco is home to many diverse neighborhoods and yerba buena, south of market street today became the newest. organizers introduced the new community at its first yerba buena neighborhood fair and they say having a new defined neighborhood will promote businesses and establish an identity as a safer, cleaner, and greener neighborhood. and not to be outdone, elviso hosted a multicultural

fair to highlight what that city has to offer. the day long arts event had food and entertainment and informational booths and it was held at the county park. and the park employees promoted its benefits for hiking and biking and water activities. so are we going to see some sprinkles on our sunday forecast? lawrence has the pin point forecast when we come back. ,,,,

if you drove it, you know it, another day of delays on the san mateo bridge, and caltrans says it will need more time to repair a crack that appeared last week during an inspection. only the far right lane, westbound, should be impacted. but caltrans wants to be finished before fans head to the raiders/niners game at candlestick park and they begin to cross that bridge, with all of that traffic. lawrence is joining us now. will we see sprinkles at the game? >> we could see a couple light showers. it doesn't look like it will be a wash-out. as a matter of fact around the bay area, we are watching the thing come through and we can see the temperatures coming down around the bay area and then a couple of days ago, the 80s and 90s are changing. and a couple of clouds are continuing to move across the skies this evening and looking

threatening at times, and nothing just yet. and we will see a little more of an impressive system beginning to move onshore. and high def doppler is picking up some of the moisture and looking at the south now, and climbing up the atmosphere a bit and we're looking at 10,000 feet and mainly virga but you're getting the idea. too dry near the surface to get the rainfall but we're seeing the precipitation in the upper levels and evaporates before it gets here. partly cloudy skies around the bay area tonight. and temperatures around the 50s. mostly cloudy at the coastline. low clouds and fog. and then the mid to upper clouds moving through too. tomorrow, partly cloudy. a slight chance of some showers around the bay area. the temperatures, highs only in the 60s and the 70s, the warmest spots. maybe 50s toward the beaches. and you can see the low clouds and fog early on. also the mid to high level clouds streaming across the skies and a combination keep can the temperatures down and the winds have switched and we have an onshore breeze that is helping to bring the temperatures down around the bay area. and 50s and 60s around the bay right now and we have some warm 70s around the concord area and

cool things down now in a hurry with some big changes over the next week or so. it will be pretty interesting in the bay area. and slight chance of showers in the sacramento valley and a possibility of a few thunderstorms over the high country in lake tahoe and especially as we look toward the afternoon hours, it looks like high pressure that brought the heat is long gone now. and the trough carved itself along the west coast. and this area off the coastline, that will sweep some moisture in our direction, leaving at least a chance of a few light showers in the bay area for tomorrow. it doesn't look like a washout. but there is a chance. so you might want to bring the umbrella if you're headed to the rangers/niners game tomorrow. temperatures in the 60s along the bay. 50s and 60s coast side. east bay temperature, low 70s. the warmest spots well inland, and oakland, lows of the mid- 60s. and as we look toward the north bay, the temperatures running in the 60s and 70s. so the temperatures are running well below what they have the past few days. they will continue to do so for tomorrow. monday, we may warm a little bit with partly cloudy skies early on in the morning. and then it looks like some more sunshine toward the

afternoon. and sunny skies, warmer temperatures return on tuesday and wednesday. but as we look toward next weekend, big change in the weather pattern. maybe some rain coming our way, as we look toward late next saturday and into sunday. that's a look at weather. here is gary with sports. >> all right. the giants are on the field in philly for game one of the nlcs. an update on the score coming up. and did the bears of cal finally figure out a way to beat the trojans? it is a long time since cal beat usc. the answer and more stuff coming up in sports. stick around. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

pressure, trying to throw it away, but it ended up right in the wrong guy's hands. to john harris. and all six of riley's interceptions this year have come in cal's three losses. and take a guess what they did following the turnover. barkley, all day to throw. he found ronald john johnson for the fifth touchdown pass of the half. usc won. and the long horns ran over 200 yards over the corn husker defense. and gilbert kept it himself for his first of two touchdowns. another unbeaten goes down. texas snaps the two-game losing streak by knocking off nebraska 20-13. we might have a new favorite for the heisman trophy. auburn quarterback cameron newton threw for one score and 19 yards running and three more touchdowns and now scored 25 touchdowns this season. and seventh ranked auburn improved to 7-0. they beat number 12 arkansas.

65-43. a little baseball now for you. the rangers who are six outs away from winning game one of the alcs, when it all caved in on them. the yankees stunned texas with five runs in the 8th and won 6- 5. ron washington's team did not want it to happen again and 0-2 would not be a good thing. third inning, rangers up. and then this goes to the snappleside sign. it scores a run. and texas has a 5-0 lead. this time the bullpen got the job done. it took five relievers and nearly four hours but they take it. the rangers win by a count of 7- 2 to even the series. game three is in new york on monday night. >> as i said last night, we didn't get it done. we didn't make any excuses about it. we took the whipping. and we took our shower and we came back and prepared to play a ball game today. we just come play baseball and whatever the day introduces, we try to play to it. >> take a shower, come back the next day. alcs game one, the giants lead
