hope your week is off to a good start as we say hello to everyone on our plaza and you at home. good morning and welcome to "the early show" i'm maggie rodriguez. >> i'm harry smith. we'll check again with seth doane with the latest from chile, the mine sdirrs out from und underground and adjusting to life under the glare of media spotlight. we'll have that story in a bit. >> one of the most infamous murders in washington, d.c. history back in the spotlight nearly 10 years after shawn dra leave vee disappeared, the trial begins, the murder trial against the man accused of killing her. we'll take you sign thad case this morning but beginning with the new terror threat, this time the warning from saudi arabia and being taken very seriously. cbs news homeland security correspondent bob orr has the details. bob, good morning. what can you tell us about this latest threat? >> reporter: good morning, maggie. we're told this threat is very serious. it was announced by the french authorities who heard from saudi
7:02 am
intelligence officials a group in yemen was targeting europe, specifically targeting france. we're told the threat is credible in that much of the information has already been corroborated but the problem like with the wider threat, the threat is non-specific that. is, officials do not have time, date, place or a target list, again another general heads-up to the people in europe and in france another terror group is planning some kind of attack, maggie. >> the group you mentioned al qaeda in the arabian peninsula, is this an offshoot of the mainly a i could today group f. so do they have the same money and capability to carry out an attack? >> reporter: it is relatively new, reconstituted about two years ago, in yemen called al qaeda in the arabia peninsula or aqap. it is he lethal in that they've already been able it reach out with attacks. this is a group that's not quite as large or organized or well known as the bin laden al qaeda but this is the same group that
7:03 am
brought us the underwear bomber, alleged underwear bomber in detroit last christmas. stoshgs is a group that first what's regionally centered but with attacks by the man you see there, they are showing the ability to strike the u.s. and western allies. so, it is a serious group. >> clearly, they have a beef against the u.s. so, why is europe being warned and not the u.s.? >> reporter: in some ways an easier target. there is an indigenous population in great brat tan, for example of pakistani, britons who have traveled freely back and forth to tribal areas. in france, there are a number of elements there that have terror ties, specifically, algerians connected to a group in north africa called al qaeda in the islamic ma greb. europe is a closer and near-term target and perhaps easier to hit but let's be clear about something, these groups would all like to hit the united states, still the gold standard for them, maggie.

>> not what we want to hear. bob, thank you very much. >> turning to politics with 15 days until the midterm elections the democrats, republicans and tarry party beginning their final sprints pulling out the big guns in the process. cbs news correspondent ben tracy is in reno, nevada and has the latest. ben, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, harry. behind me here this morning in reno, the tea party express rolling out to a series of rallies across the country as the tea party tries to fire up its supporters. mine wheel, president obama is trying to do the same thing with disillusioned democrats. >> yes, we can. >> can we do this? >> yes, we can. >> are you fire fired up and ready to go? >> yes. >> reporter: for the first time since 2008, michelle obama joined her husband on the campaign trail headlining a massive rally sunday night in ohio. >> this is about more than just politics. it's about whether or not we, as a people, can move forward
7:05 am
through times of challenge and cynicism and frustration. >> reporter: the first lady's campaign swing is a shot in the arm for weary democrats and her husband, whose approval numbers especially in battleground states, continue to sag. >> it is up to you to tell them, we do not want what they are selling. we've been there before, and we are not going back. >> reporter: a new a.p./knowledge network poll shows one-quarter of those who voted for him are now considering casting ballots for republicans. >> and the momentum is with us, as michael was explaining. the momentum is with us but now is not the time to let up. >> reporter: the star attraction at today's tea party express rally, sarah palin whose endorsements have helped 25 candidates help win their primary races. >> soon, we'll all be dancing. >> reporter: their number one target, senator harry reid. tea party express spent more than a million dollars trying to defeat them and get their candidate sharron angle elected.
7:06 am
polls show the two are basically tied so the bus is here to rally the troops. >> this tea party express bus tour is about getting up the vote, ginning up that anger. >> reporter: in delaware the tea party favorite -- >> i'm not a witch. >> reporter: -- is trailing democrat chris koontz but two points. she blames the republican party for not giving her campaign enough help. >> we are hoping the national republican senatorial committee will help us, but it's two of in weeks left and they're not. >> reporter: now, the tea party express certainly plans on being helped to its candidate, these buses will head across the country in the next 15 days. they are going to hit 19 different states, 30 different cities, ending in new hampshire the day before the election. harry? >> ben tracy in reno, nevada, thank you very much. joining you us from columbus, ohio our political analyst john dickerson. john, good morning. >> good morning, harry. >> you see president and mrs. obama on the stump together.
7:07 am
how should we translate that? >> well, we should translate into the final push for the democrats trying to get the folks out of their seats. the question for the last several weeks has been, will democrats come home? and michelle obama campaigned for the first time. she was here two years ago with the president, then just a candidate. and they're trying to recapture the spirit of that 2008 campaign. >> meantime, sarah palin is out west campaigning, too. and isn't it interesting for both of these, these are the superstars, these are the sons of the constellations of these two political groups and the fact is, some candidates want to get close to the sun, some candidates can't get far enough away. >> that's right. no one wants to be ickeros, getting too close and burned. in ohio it is tricky, the president is here to turn out the base, he did it. 35,000 people showed up but the races in ohio are not trending the democrats' election.
7:08 am
much in the gubernatorial race the incumbent is behind about six points on average. but, this message is not just about ohio but to send a message to democrats everywhere they if they can turn out 35,000 here, democrats everywhere have to get out on election day or before in those states with early voting. >> on the other hands sarah palin shows up in california and the biggest candidates there are hundreds of miles away. >> that's right. and sarah palin is not broadly popular outside of, you know, the tea party and conservative movements. her approval rating in polls is about 30%. that's in the great. now, the california candidates say, well, they had scheduling issues. if she were a superstar, across all voting groups, they were find a way to make it there. >> yeah. let's talk a bit about some of the house numbers because it looks more and more, did i see someplace over the weekend there may be as many as 100 house seats up for grabs? >> that's right. when john boehner, who would
7:09 am
like to be the republican leader in the house said about 100 seats were in play several months ago democrats laughed at him. now the two best prognosticators for the house races who pick and see what's at stake and what might be available for republicans to pick up say there about 100 races now, some republican races but 100 races might change on election day. >> we have a lot to watch, two weeks and one day away. john dickerson, thank you very much. do appreciate it. >> thanks, harry. >> 7:09 a lot more news to bring you this morning. let's turn to erical hill at the news desk. >> good morning to everyone. a deadly typhoon b feet of water in vietnam where at least 30 people were killed.

a part of the team, i was sweating every lap and strategy. if you thought driving was intense, the pit is even more so. in less than 11 seconds the car is jacked up, tires changed, refueled and back on its way. the crew takes pride in their time but they still found a low-stress job for me. i might have only been a tie gopher but i still felt part of the team. he got pretty banged up on the track and only finished 17th. although disappointing, just being there to see, hear and feel the power and speed, i became a true nascar fan. and lucky for me, my experience wasn't over. >> just another day at the track. >> on a quieter day, with a few less fans in the stands, it was my time to win every man's dream. considering my daily mode of

8:46 am
>> is that why you wrote the book. >> i am a scrapbooking and album making fiend. i think i have about 100 at home and have done four generations of my family, my grandmother and great-grandfather did. everybody out there, everybody takes pictures, no question and mad at themselves when they wind up sitting there at the computer, digital and you never print them and you have the box in the garage that sits there and you never scrapbook them. i wanted to make it really easy for everybody and make it simple and show everybody skranbooking is not, you know that, word you have to use the glue and glitter. it is like really easy and so important for your family and kids. >> no one thinks they have time. erica and i was talking, who has time, nancy. >> it doesn't take that much time. it is not what it used to be and that's one thing i wanted to do, make it very easy and simple. you know, i really learned the magic of scrapping at a really early age because in the albums i remember this story where we had and i tell this in the book a cat hi and we discovered my sister was allergic to the cat
8:47 am
so i said to my mother, you know, what do you mean we have to give the cat away, can't we give my sister away instead? what does she do, she goes time to bring out the album. she brought it out and showed me all these pictures of me and my sister, where she was 34, she was three years older and how many years we had together and the bond and how important that bond be throughout my life and i realized at a very young age i can do away with the cat and keep my sister. to this day i'm still very happy i kept my sister. >> something she remembered her whole life and she talked to a psychologist for the book and says scrapbooks have that impact on all children. >> he does. he uses the statement there are few tools more powerful than the family album and scrapbooking and making your child feel confident, belonging to a unite, like a family and feeling self assured so important with all the topics in the news these days and bullying. what it does when you put a picture of your child in the album, it says you are important
8:48 am
to me. you matter, you belong to this group and you show them a picture of with them and their friends and say you have friends. when they feel this peer pressure or somebody is bullying me they can go back to pictures embedded in their mind, wait a minute, i have a family and a unit and i can stand strong. i get so many mim rees i have from just looking at those pictures. goit all my mom's scrapbooks after she passed away, my dad sent to me. my baby girl was born a year after my mom passed away, almost a year to the day. that's the only way i have to connect to her my mom, the only way she knows grandma betty. >> you inspired me. can you imagine your little girl getting to know her grandma in this special way. >> also one of the things i've really been encouraging what we've started is an album of hope shane tifs. what are we wanting, i encourage every parent, you cannot give
8:49 am
your child a bigger gift than an album of hope. i made one for ashby, this has one of those things in it too. >> your 3-year-old? >> my 3-year-old t. says all your hopes and dreams for them and this says i hope you will never feel you can always counts on your mother and father to always be there for you. so she'll have this and she can keep, you know, all of her life and i tell her i hope you'll enjoy sports and participate in them and put pictures if you want to teach them about the environment. >> a great idea. >> take them out and plant a tree with them and take pictures, you have those memories. so it is so important the florida department of citrus joined in on that. if you go to the florida orange juice facebook page you will see how crazy the mornings can be and you want to make them memorable, times with your kids. >> she made a scrapbook for us we'll take a look at in a little while. stay with us, everybody and thank you, nancy. >> oh, my gosh. thank you, nancy. >> oh, my gosh. i had so much fun doing it and , 3q
