the senate hoping to rally frustrated and disappointed democratic voters. we're in washington with much more on this. good morning. >> good morning. over the next few days the president will target women campaigning out west for two female candidates and he's doing it for good reason. traditionally women vote democratic more often than men. >> but you've got to mail in that ballot. >> reporter: president obama may be campaigning out west but hopes voters nationwide hear his message. >> this election isn't about anger, it's not about fear. this election is a choice and the stakes could not be higher. >> reporter: the president is on his longest campaign swing yet trying to save democrats facing tough re-election battles. today, he will stump for washington senator patty murray who is locked in a tight race. last night he warned a portland crowd a gop victory in congress could put many of his signature measures in jeopardy. >> we don't want them rolling back wall street reforms so now credit card companies can go

back to hitting you with hidden fees and penalties. >> reporter: with only 12 days left on the campaign trail, president obama isn't the only one hitting the road. the tea party express currently on a cross-country marathon trying to rally voters. singer pat boone provided some lively entertainment at a tea party rally in pasadena last night. >> simply taxed enough already. >> if we find ourself in a financial mess, we have to cut back. our federal government should do the same. >> reporter: according to a new a.p. poll, republicans have a slight edge going into the homestretch. more voters say they plan to cast ballots for gop congressional candidates rather than democrats. but, there is some encouraging news for democrats. more than three million people have voted early and more of those appear to be democrats. betty, back to you. >> thank you. the naacp, this country's

most prominent civil rights group citing a report claiming some tea party activists have ties to racist roots. it's important to note that the report does not indicate that most tea party members are racist or extremists but that some members have racist links. tea party groups and mostly white membership have taken a tough stand on immigration and come down hard on president obama. >> i think some of the language, for example, like socialism and that kind of content can attract folks who live on the fringe of our society. there is a historical basis on that. also, attacks on the president much is dehumanization. those concern us. >> the report cites one tea party leader in texas who is a supporter of the ku klux klan. anita hill isn't talking about a request that she apologize to supreme court justice thomas and she had very little to say to reporters on wednesday.

>> i don't have any comment right now. >> but you said it was unfortunate, it was inappropriate what she did. >> please, let me go teach my class. >> the request comes from thomas's wife who left a phone message for hill earlier this month asking hill to apologize for accusing thomas of sexual harassment during his confirmation hearings 19 years ago. hill says the call was inappropriate and says she will not apologize. don't ask, don't tell is back on, for now. the military's ban on gays serving openly is bouncing around the courts. the latest, a federal appeals court has ruled the pentagon can temporarily reinstate the ban. kendis gibson reports. >> reporter: julie sohn wants to be a marine again. she served eight years but was dishonorably discharged after she came out as a lesbian. >> i served my country, a tour of duty in iraq, i served the city of l.a., you know and i'm getting read my rights? how ludicrous is the policy. >> reporter: the policy is back in effect, at least for now. wednesday an appeals court agreed to freeze a federal

judge's order telling the military to stop enforcing the ban on openly gay and lesbian troops. the obama administration asked to suspend the judge's ruling until the issue was fully decided. >> i think a lot of people are forgetting there are thousands of us serving in the military right now and they're attacking us. >> reporter: president obama says he supports repeal of don't ask, don't tell, but only through an act of congress, not through the courts. the appellate court decision puts her attempt to rejoin the marines in jeopardy. >> i'm going to try to do it. right now, i'm sitting here going i want to leave on my own terms. i wasn't allowed to and want to serve. >> reporter: now she and so many others have to wait until the next court battle to see if they get their wish. kendis gibson, cbs news, hollywood, california. the obama administration officially notified congress of a $60 billion arms sale to saudi arabia one of the largest single u.s. arms deals ever. the deal is designed to counter the growing influence of

iran. the sale includes advanced weaponry including new f-15 fighter jets and upgrades to what they already have. and helicopters and radar warning systems. guess who came to lunch at the pentagon? radical al qaeda cleric an war al awlaki. turns out he was invited to the pentagon in the month after the september 11th attacks part of an effort to reach out to the muslim community. he is now based in yemen. the fbi found he has ties to the 9/11 hijackers and has been linked to the fort hood shooter. there is a new police chief in one mexican border town plagued by drug violence. marisol garcia is a 20-year-old college student studying criminology. she has a force of 13 agents in a town near el paso, texas. a town where drug gangs have killed officials. it is so dangerous there, police have quit. the mayor says garcia was the best candidate among those who applied. penthouse founder bob

guccione has died. he started the magazine in 1959 challenging playboy in the adult entertainment market. pented house, including full frontal nudity was billed as the magazine of sex, politics and protests. he died wednesday at a texas hospital following a long battle with lung cancer. bob guccione was 79 years old. on the "cbs moneywatch" a mixed morning for asian stocks. ashley morrison is in new york with the latest on that. good morning. >> good morning to you, betty. most asian markets saw an early rebound before ending with losses japan's nikkei was down just a fraction slipping to its lowest close in three weeks. hong kong's hang seng was also lower. today, wall street gets a look at the weekly jobless claim numbers. wednesday, stocks rallied wiping out nearly all of tuesday's losses the dow jones 129 points while the nasdaq gained 20. americans are still keeping their wallets closed tight according to a new survey by citigroup. consumers plan to further cut back discretionary spending the

next six months including spending on items like clothing, personal electronics, even going out to dinner. the survey also found americans are becoming increasingly uncomfortable about their level of debt. consumer spending accounts for 70% of economic growth. toyota announced another recall, this one involves 740,000 cars sold here in the u.s. to deal with a brake fluid issue. the cars in question include the 2005 through 2006 avalon, 2006 highlander and several lex us models. owners will be notified by mailing beginning next month. the skies are getting friendlier, at least for the airlines flying them. delta, usair ways and american airlines all posted better than expected earnings. travel demand is picking up, especially on international flights. that helped give the airline industry its best quarterly results in three years. and apple has given their laptops a lighter touch. wednesday the ceo steve jobs,

doctor's office has become a thing of the past, because nowadays, more doctors are coming to them. manuel gallegus reports. >> reporter: doctor andrew lyon's practice is no longer in an office. >> good morning, mrs. morgan. >> reporter: ten years ago, he started visiting patients in their homes. >> have you noticed any changes in your hearing? >> reporter: house calls are making a comeback and many of the tests are the same, but the classic black bag has been replaced with a laptop computer. >> there's no substitute for the house call. you get a great insight into your patients, into their lives, how they live, where they keep their medications. >> reporter: 96-year-old amalia morgans remembers house calls as a child now needs to see the doctor once a month and a visit is much more convenient. >> it's a blessing. >> reporter: in many cases house calls are covered by medicare and it is expected demand for them will only increase as our population ages. in the new england journal of medicine dr. steven landers says the future of health care will be at home. >> by 2030 we'll have more than 70 million folks over the age of 65. >> reporter: many seniors suffer

joanne update on >> an update on the critical contests in campaign 2010. in the house republicans need to pick up 39 seats now held by democrats to reach the 218 it takes to become the majority. in the senate the republicans would need a net gain of 10 seats and they're targeting 12 democratic seats that are in jeopardy. three are in states where hispanics will be a key factor. california, colorado, and nevada. john blackstone has more on the importance of the latino vote. >> reporter: with a mariachi band and tequila toast a hispanic business group welcomed california's two top republican candidates, meg whitman for governor and carley fiorina for the u.s. senate. >> i think every speech should begin with a shot of tequila.

>> reporter: her, trying to unseat senator barbara boxer, attracting the latino vote is crucial. it's equally important for meg whitman in her race against democrat jerry brown for governor. >> i cannot win this election without the latino vote. >> reporter: latinos make up this country's biggest and fastest growing minority, numbering more than 48 million. some 19 million are eligible to vote. >> whether it's in california, whether it's in nevada or other states, latinos are looking for a reason to come out and vote. >> reporter: in nine states latino voters make up more than 10% of the electorate. they favor democrats over republicans 62 to 25%. president obama is urging them to get out and vote. >> don't forget who your friends are. [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: but in nevada, latinos were urged not to vote in a controversial ad now pulled from tv stations.

>> don't vote. >> reporter: the ad, created by a conservative latino vote seemed design to help republican senate candidate sharron angle in her close race with senate majority leader harry reid. in ads promising to get tough on illegal immigration, she's been accused of stereotyping latinos and in a much viewed video she told hispanic students some of you look asian. in california's governor's race immigration became an issue when meg whitman's undocumented housekeeper went public about being fired after working nine years for whitman. whitman has spent about $140 million, a record for a non-presidential campaign. among non-latino voters, she's in a dead heat with jerry brown, at 48% each. but, add in latinos, and brown has a five-point edge. 49% to 44%.
