and there are other problems linked to the wet weather. this is an oak tree that came down in the middle of a street in sonoma county. this is just east of windsor. no one was hurt. the driver of this car lost control in slick conditions. that happened on a winding road. we don't know how the driver is doing but the rain is most likely the cause of the accident. meteorologist lawrence karnow is tracking the storm for us. >> pretty good this afternoon. we had fairly heavy rainfall around the bay area. some of the rain amounts pretty impressive especially north of the golden gate bridge. that's when we started to see upwards of an inch of rainfall in some of those places. and it will continue to fall. over an inch and a half in san francisco. headed towards a half in oakland. half moon bay just under that. but you get the idea. a nice soaker around the bay area. and there is still plenty of activity out there. doppler radar picking up on the

rainfall. mostly heavier amounts right now. continuing to show up in the north bay. that will be the focal point. heavier amounts of rain as we head into tomorrow. further to the south we have a storm along the peninsula right now. san francisco. a pretty good cell there. very moist flow overnight tonight. but the main event still yet to come. we will try to time that out for your sunday. looks like it will come during the middle of the day at least in parts of the bay area. back to you, ann. >> lawrence, thank you. well, they were on duty the night the pipeline in san bruno exploded but the "san francisco chronicle" reports the pg&e employees have not talked to investigators about what happened that night. don knapp on the reason the workers have so far not been interviewed. >> reporter: big questions remain about the gas pipeline blast that destroyed 37 san bruno homes and left eight dead including what was going on with pipeline pressure before the blast and why did it take an hour and a half to get the gas turned off?

now the "san francisco chronicle" reports two pacific & electric employees who played important roles in responding to the blast have not yet talked about. they say they are too traumatized to do so. the ntsb will eventually question the two it is expected. >> one thing that is important in these explosions is human error is oftentimes the element that is relevant. >> reporter: the ntsb told the "chronicle" the two declined to speak to investigators in the week after the disaster and still have not been questioned. the board says there was a spike in gas line pressure from the normal 375 pounds per square inch to 386 pounds per square inch. pg&e has refused to release information on who was in charge of pipeline operations that night but the president is cooperating on other questions

like the future of the damaged line. >> what he has said is they recognize that the community does not want that transmission line in the neighborhood. and they are willing to move it. there is no way that the people who have lost their homes or have to rebuild on some level are going to be able to do so if that transmission line is still there. >> reporter: pg&i citing personnel rules won't talk about pipeline supervisors' back grounds or experience. don knapp, cbs5. a team is in roseville tonight to see what sparked the huge fire. they arrived at the galleria today. they are trying to recreate the events that led to thursday's fire. investigators believe a backpack was left somewhere on the second floor and it contained explosives.

>> the backpack will be part of the scene that will be processed. they need to determine the best way to approach that. the backpack has undergone a lot through the fire and water damage. >> the suspect said he started the fire to get attention and said there were no explosives inside the backpack. the fire destroyed a third of the mall and caused millions of dollars in damage. no word yet on when the mall will reopen. seven months after fire burned down a sacramento landmark, a big step today toward restoring it to its prior glory. volunteers put up the signs and lights that made iceland arena so recognizable. workers are trying to make the rink look like it did when it opened in 1940 and they hope to reopen it in a couple weeks. a health warning for part of contra costa county after a refinery fire. workers used flares to burn it

off yesterday. the gas has affected air quality in crockett and rodeo. the fire started with equipment failure of a company that provides hydrogen to the plant. it could take days until the refinery is fully powered again. bay area port shut down by oscar grant supporters today. hundreds gathered just two weeks before sentencing for the former b.a.r.t police officer who shot grant. we look at today's port protest. >> reporter: today hundreds of people came to oakland city hall to demand justice for oscar grant. >> it is very powerful because we have international eyes on us and we believe today there is an opportunity here. >> reporter: it was also a show of force by a local long shore

union which stopped work at several local ports including here in oakland. it is our way of speaking out out to the world that that kind of behavior is unacceptable. >> reporter: dozens of members came to protest abuse. >> there is no amount of money that can equal the loss of a life. >> i think it is really important to see the community see each other come together for a purpose. >> reporter: this rally comes less than two weeks before the sentencing of former b.a.r.t police officer johannes mehserle convicted in july of involuntary manslaughter for killing oscar grant on new year's day 2009, a scene infamously captured on witness cell phone video. >> the closer we can get to sentencing, the more stressful it becomes.

products could be contaminated by bacterium that could cause food poisoning. including squid and other products. california's u.s. senate candidates out rallying the troops today. the republican working phones today. the senate race is very tight. only a few percentage points separate the two candidates. a poll shows the democrat's lead has shrunk to five points since september. carlie has been attacking barbara as being too extreme for california. senator boxer campaigning in southern california dismissed the possibility that voter anger against democrats is chipping away at her lead. boxer says that voters support her long track record of fighting for the environment and the economy. on the beach in santa monica

she said she will continue her advocacy against offshore oil drilling. meg whitman took her campaign to asian american voters today. the republican gubernatorial candidate visited a vietnamese this morning and then went to korea town. with a little more than a week until election it shows the former ebay executive falling behind jerry brown. brown took the day off today and had no public events scheduled. president obama headed to minnesota this morning pushing for votes for minnesota's democratic nominee for govern who is in a close race with his rival. this ends the president's four- day campaign swing. he came to the bay area 2 days ago to drum up support for california democrats.

he left sfo yesterday. soon michelle obama will be here. she will arrive monday to help raise money for democrats. the congressional campaign committee fund-raiser will be held then. this is her second visit to the bay area since her husband took office. a bay area center opening despite budget cuts. and good news on the job market. where in the bay area you might stand a better chance of landing that perfect job. ,, david harmer wrote an education plan titled "abolish the public schools." he even called our schools "insidious" and "socialism." as families struggle to raise their kids, to provide a good education, harmer bragged, "we can design a plan to dismantle them." david harmer is just too radical.

after 23 straight months of declines, the area posted its the job market in silicon valley is showing signs of a rebound after 23 straight months of declines. it posted its first year-over- year job gains. some areas are recovering faster than other areas in northern california. economists predict the growth will eventually spread to its neighbors. in spite of a budget crunch a community center is now open in san jose. the seven treed neighborhood celebrated the facilities grand opening today. the community center spans 38,000 square feet and in it you will find a ballroom, game

room and gym and eventually there will be a library too. vote, approved this project 10 years ago before the economy tanked. people need to be indoors. >> yes, anywhere indoor. really soaking around the bay area tonight. continuing tonight. more showers out there. some pockets of some moderate to heavier amounts of rainfall. take you out there right now. we have got cloudy skies. giant orange. giants game continuing right now. we picked up a pretty good system in the afternoon hours and brought over an inch of rainfall in parts of the north bay. still the main event to come and that will be moving in looks like for tomorrow. high-def doppler is still picking up on some of the showers and mostly heavier amounts of rainfall continue in the north bay and that's where we go first here. you can see the pockets off the

coastline just pushing onshore. dry spells and then more pockets of rainfall will move in. south bay not as much. more showers headed in towards san jose. just light stuff in over the santa cruz mountains as well but will likely see it pick up. we have got a pretty good cell and will work its way in. here you go. clouds across the state wanting to move through. bringing with it some heavy rainfall especially north of the golden gate bridge. looking at gusty winds. likely more trees down for tomorrow. easily gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour. heavier than that into the straits. urban flooding out along the roads. you'll see puddling along the highway. be very careful. it will be treacherous out there. first rains of the season you get oils up on the roadway. 2 to 3 inches on the north bay. 1 inch on the peninsula. big storm system approaching the coastline. one moving through today and

here comes the next one. it will take its time and will slowly drop into the bay area. tonight kind of hit and miss showers but i think back to heavy rainfall in through the day tomorrow starting in the north bay and spreading to the south. let's see if we can time this out for you. headed through the night tonight you've got scattered rains around the bay area right now. heaviest amounts in the north bay. that's what it will be on and off tonight. about 9:00 a.m. in the morning very heavy rainfall expected in parts of the north bay and whole system begins to sag to the south throughout the day. so, yes, it looks like it will be very heavy and wet out. just about everywhere you go. everybody will see rain. so with that in mind be careful it will be treacherous out there. by monday things wind down and looks like skies begin to part just a bit. warmer weather on tuesday and wednesday and more rain later in the week. now here comes sports. the bears at home. almost always a good combo. asu had a devil of a time in berkeley.
