i'm going to admit i kind of mailed it in this from the costume standpoint but there is the vault. >> there will be a transformation inside that. >> not a hint? >> no. >> michael jackson. >> no. >> jermaine. >> no. >> janet. >> reggie. >> get past it, move on. first our big ongoing story this morning the attempted toryist attacks in the u.s., the search continuing for suspicious cargo after two packages with explosives mailed fwr yemen bounds for the u.s. were found on cargo planes in dubai and england. it triggered worldwide fears of a new al qaeda terror campaign. we have reports this morning. we we begin with homeland security correspondent bob orr in our washington bureau with the latest for us this morning. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, chris. u.s. officials strongly believe the attempted terrorist attack was likely launched by al qaeda in the arabian peninsula.

this was discovered on a u.s. cargo plane in england. a second on a fedex jet in dubai both bound for chicago synagogues -- concealed in printer cartridges. the president warned americans that danger was real. >> initial examination of those packages has determined that they do apparently contain explosive material. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news, the devices tested positive for petn, the same explosive compound used in last year's christmas day attack in detroit. his so-called underwear bomb was built by members of al qaeda in arabian peninsula, the same ye pen-based terror group authorities believe is behind the latest devices. >> they were not letters, they were larger than. think about bread boxes or so in terms of, you know, maybe size. we don't know yet how they were intended to be activated. >> reporter: the pair of

suspicious packages never made it to the u.s. but their discovery sent security forces here scrambling. authorities swept three ups cards go jets after landing in philadelphia and newark. a passenger plane from dubai believed carrying a package from yemen was escorted into new york by fighter jets. and police searched the ups truck in balloon but no other dangers were discored. >> the specific tip which led to the discovery of the potential bombs overseas came from saudi arabia. intelligence also suggests there could be other dangerous packages still in the pipeline out there somewhere. so, officials now are looking for and examining every parcel recently shipped from yemen. chris? >> bob orr, thank you. the plot to ship explosives on cards go planes appears a deliberate attempt to exploit a major problem in airport security. armen keteyian has that part of the story for us this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, chris.

the latest terror scare has given renewed interest to what many experts believe the biggest loophole in aviation security. on any given day about 37500 tons of packages are shipped on cards go planes in this country. in addition, another 12 .5 thousand tons of cards go sentence on passenger planes. at new york airports, that's about 5500 tons a day. 4400 tons a day at lax. more than 2700 at chicago's o'hare. and while 100% of cargo on commercial flights is inspected in some way, only a fraction is inspected on cards go flights. >> it is basically relying upon, well, we know this other person sending it and will trust them they are not sending us a bomb. but, you know, that's not a security system. you know, that's a security joke. >> you think this will leave on a flight tomorrow? >> reporter: in october 2006, cbs news sent six led-lined

boxes that could have contained a bomb. but, instead, held high-speed film on commercial and cargo flights from london, rio, paris, and the washington, d.c. area. the packages were designed to tell us whether they had been opened or x-rayed by security. just one of the six packages we sent was opened or inspected. the tsa refuses to tell us just how much all the cards go on planes is inspected. as of now, chris, if you're on an all-cargo flight, there is no rule as to how much of that plane is screened. >> armen keteyian, thank you. joining us with the latest on the terror threats from the cargo planes united states secretary of homeland security ja national nepal tan no. madam secretary, good morning. can you confirm, are there more packages out there at this time? >> well, what we're doing now is watching every package that

emanates from yemen. and we're work having closely with our international partners, who, of course, were an important part of detecting this particular plot enabling us to identify the two packages for certain, the one in dubai and the one that's currently being examined in the uk. >> i hate to oversimplify this, but this tip from the saudis, if we had not gotten this, is it that easy a terrorist in yemen can fedex 20 packages and hope one gets through and makes it to the united states? >> well, there are a number of screening layers that go on for cargo. and they start with good intel gathering. so, for example, here we had good intel gathering, we had a good partnership with the saudis. we have systems in place so the minute anything is raised, we are able to work internationally with our private sector partners, identify packages and get them right into forensic

examination. >> do you feel, though, enough inspections are done? we've just had a report, there are lapses out there, i mean, no one's perfect. but do you feel enough is done both with cargo planes at ports of call? >> yes. we are doing a lot both with cargo planes and at ports of call. but, that is not to say that we're not always looking for ways to do more and, in fact, we are working across the international spectrum to do more where cargo is concerned. >> let me ask you this, yemen has been on the terrorist map since 2000. we emphasize and place so much attention on afghanistan and spend billions of dollars there each week. is enough attention focused on yemen and al qaeda in yemen at this point, do you feel? >> well, al qaeda in yemen has been one of our focuses for the last few years. it continues to be. this particular plot does have the hallmarks of an aqua plot.

we will trace it to its ultimate source and will be relentless doing so. >> did the system work here, in your estimation? >> no, i think people need to understand that there is a system and the system requires intel gathering, information sharing. it requires the ability to immediately move when some information develops and it requires the ability to actually track and screen and all of those things were in place and we were able to immediately track those two packages, as i said before. segregate them. they are under forensic analysis and then move forward almost immediately and institute new rules for all cargo emanating from yemen. >> madam secretary, let me ask you this, though, do you sit there this morning and say if we had not gotten this tip chances are these explosives very well may have made their way to the united states and a disaster averted at this point? >> ultimately, we believe that,

in this case, the plot certainly was disrupted but we're not sitting back. we are being very, very vigilant. we don't know that this was the entire universe of the plot. that's why we've taken many of the measures we've taken over the past 48 hours. >> madam secretary, thank you for answering our questions this morning. >> thank you. >> all right. rebecca, over to you. thank you. joining us from london, cbs news correspondent mark phillips with a closer look at yemen, the latest ref fung for terrorists in training. good morning, mark. >> good morning, replica. yemen has slowly but surely become another front line in the battle with islamic militancy. al qaeda in the arabian peninsula or aqap, based in yemen, is described by security officials as be currently the most active terrorist franchise and the u.s. -borne al qaeda leader an war alma lick key, among other plots is based there, as well. in other words aqap has become aqhq. the capitol of yemen, the exotic

city of sana, is about as far as the central government's authority stretches. the country's beleaguered president -- is fighting three internal wars with religious and regional-based militants and vast areas of the hin terland have become prime al qaeda training ground, exactly the way afghanistan was before 9/11. as the military pressure as curtailed al qaeda's ability to train along the afghan-pakistan border region, where the leadership is thought to be hiding, militants have shifted to the more welcoming sands of yemen and, to some extent, somalia. it's also closer to traditional funding sources from sympathizers elsewhere in the arabian peninsula. >> so, it's a sanctuary for organizations like al qaeda. they can train there. they can base themselves there. they can plan there. they can do their logistics efforts to equip themselves there and then they can move from there to whatever they want

to operate. >> they have done so before. the detroit christmas underwear bomb plot was hatched in yemen. jihadi websites are full of bomb ideas from picture frames to cassette players. and, of course, yemen is where the u z cole was attacked ten years ago there is increasing cooperation between the u.s. and yemeni authorities but the commitment particularly in financial terms is only a small fraction of the money being poured into pakistan, for example. the yemen government is also dependent, to some extent on the support of the same tribes harboring will militants. rebecca? >> thank you. joining us now from washington to discuss al qaeda's growing influence in yemen and what it means for our national security, cbs news national security analyst juan sir raet. great to see you. thanks for being with us this morning. >> good this morning. >> start with why yemen is such a hotbed for terrorism . >> for a long time al qaeda has had a presence in yemen.

the 10-year anniversary of the uss cole attack just happened the ancestral home of osama bin laden's family. yemen, in many ways has deep roots and ties with the extremist islamic movement in addition a trar tory country that isn't in full control, mountainous in some parts, desert in others and hard for the government to have full control over the territory, in some ways an idel setting. >> we just heard one of our focuses in the united states is yemen but is it at a point we can say yemen should be a bigger focus as far as afghanistan or pakistan as far as routing out terrorism. >> i wouldn't say that. the al qaeda core still resides, we think, in western pakistan and in that border region between afghanistan and pakistan. but clearly the al qaeda presence in yemen has grown more and more serious. this latest attempted attack,

the december 25th attack, are examples of that. and clearly, they've got fighters numbering up to 600. ther sdae attracting western recruits, they're training them, trying to deploy them. this is becoming a staging ground for al qaeda to launch global attacks. and so, it has to be an area of focus for the u.s. government. >> the explosives that were contained in these packages yesterday were particularly complex. is yemen in a position that it is sophisticated enough to pull off a truly large-scale u.s. attack? >> oh, i think they are. and i think the problem here is that the affiliate there in yemen is made up of seasoned, hardened al qaeda operatives, the leader is a long-time bin laden ally trained by al qaeda. the fighters that they have along with them, the expertise, is real. and so, the attempt that you see to probe our defenses, i think, are very real attempts by al qaeda in arabian peninsula to

find our vulnerabilities and actually attack us and i think we've got to be quite conscious of that and defend against it. >> juan zarate, thank you if being with us. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> now what else is making news this morning, whit johnson is at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning, everyone. straight to breaking news this morning. an eastern afghanistan, 30 insurgents were killed during a bold attack on a nay owe base deep in taliban control territory. assailants struck the post from all sides with small arms, rocket-propelled ge nadz and mortars. five coalition soldiers were injured. most nato forces in that region are americans. tuesday's midterm elections just three days away with control of congress hanging in the balance, republicans are trying to hold onto their leads while democrats led by president obama plan a major blitz over the weekend. senior white house correspondent bill plaents is live at the white house for us this morning. bill, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning to you, whit. the president takes off an a hectic, down to the wire campaign blitz. pennsylvania, connecticut, illinois, ohio. the object is to get independents, who voted for him in 2008, back to the polls to vote for democrats this year. last night, the president was in virginia, campaigning for freshman democrat tom periello. his only appearance for a member of the house. why? despite being in a republican-leaning district has wholeheartedly supported the obama agenda. >> his first allegiance is not to party labels. it's to the people of his district and the people of virginia. >> reporter: former president bill clinton will appear at no fewer than 15 rallies in eight states before tuesday to support democratic candidates. and michelle obama, who has approval ratings considerably higher than her husband's, will be back out campaigning in pennsylvania and nevada on monday. the stakes are especially high in nevada, where a new poll has

senate majority leader harry reid narrowly trading the tea party favorite sharron angle who got a boost saturday night from senator john mccain. >> the 51st vote to give republicans majority in the united states senate will come right here from the state of nevada. >> reporter: reid released a new ad accusing her of running from the truth. >> harry reid, fighting for us. sharron angle, pathological. >> reporter: every major poll and indicator suggests the democrats will lose the house on tuesday. they may hold onto the senate, but the question becomes, what, if anything, can get done in the next two years? whit? >> all right, bill, we'll be watching. thank you at the white house for us. today the nation's capital is bracing for the rally to restore sanity and/or fear. it's been organized by comedy central's jon stuart and stephen colbert there. are shoe to be laughs but their ultimate goals remain unclear.

be crazy and angry and let that be our only voice. >> reporter: stewart seems to have touched what you might call the anti-anger nerve. in a year when the president was called a liar and when fox's glenn beck labeled the president a power-hungry socialist and a nazi, stewart took beck on. >> no one should tell us what we need to start doing. >> here's what you need to start doing. [ laughter ] >> reporter: fans going to the rally told us they wanted less name calling in the media and more accomplishment in washington. >> there's too much anger going on in political speech. >> reporter: stewart says the rally will not be political but the president appeared on his show a full half hour and democrats hope it energizes their base in the same way beck's rally energized conservatives. stewart has joked the key difference will be in the hand-held signs. >> i disagree with you, but i'm pretty sure you're not hitler.

>> reporter: outside of the politics of all this, though, this rally will certainly show what a cultural force jon stewart has become, a comedian riling people up to try to calm things down. whit? >> all right. thank you. meanwhile in reno, nevada a gunman faces three counts of attempted murder after allegedly opening fire at co-workers inside a walmart store. 45-year-old john dennis gallant sur renned after a six-hour standoff. police say he was about it lose his job. two of his three victims remain in serious condition. and finally, a medical first, researchers at wake forest university used human cells to grow a miniature liver. the tiny organ, only an inch in diameter is too small to work for a human but researchers say the first step towards growing larger livers for people who need a transplant. about 20 past the hour. lonnie quinn with a first check of the weather. no costume today, no halloween

will wear decals on their helmets. >> what matters is taking these young men, honoring declan's memory and getting ourselves in a position to move forward. >> reporter: a cloud of grief and sorrow still engulfs the campus. the pep rally was canceled friday night and there are many lingering questions surrounding sullivan's death. should he have been filming under such severe weather conditions? and why did the team practice outdoors wednesday were you indoors the day before due to the same high winds? while on the lift, sullivan eerily tweeted about dying. gusts of wind, up to 60 miles an hour. well today will be fun at work. i guess i've lived long enough, he wrote in one message adding holy blank, holy blank, this is terrifying. >> there's a lot to learn here and we will learn it all. >> the indiana workplace safety agency and the university are investigating the incident and they promise a stern review of their policies. little consolation for the sullivan family and a campus

community left to mourn and look back fondly on a precious life cut short. >> telling through the lens of a camera is how declan lived. it is not how he died. >> joining us exclusively from the notre dame campus in south bend, indiana his best friends, chris and maurice. thanks for joining us. we appreciate you joining us and know it's been a difficult couple of days. now that you've had a couple of days to sit on this and see and understand exactly what happened, chris, i'll start with you, do you feel that someone should have stepped up to the plate and said, you know what, declan, you should not be up that high during conditions like this? >> well, you know, it was, of course, an extremely windy day and declan actually told me before practice the current weather conditions, it was an extremely windy day. the day before, we had a tornado alert. and i believe he told me that

they were only supposed to go up halfway on the lift. and so, that was the safety p precautions. >> maurice, let me ask you, does it seem -- i don't know -- the university, i know, is being questioned for being negligent here, the head coach, brian kelly, there's a lot of questions about whether he should have made the decision because it is his responsibility to look after not only the players but everyone involved with the football program. do you think that he should have said something, he should have made sure declan was in a safer position? >> i don't know. i'm not sure whose job it is to make those decisions, but it's just a freak accident. there's really nothing you can do to try and prevent it, there's really no use going back with what-ifs. >> chris, i know were you there. could you see the tower swing, did you know declan was in danger? >> you're right. i was there. i was in practice and i happened to look up and there was a huge gust of wind and i saw the tower

tip over. and i saw it land over the fence and, at that point, i ran over to the street and i stood by him for a couple minutes. i was ten feet away. and i waited until the ambulance came and, at that point, i rushed over to memorial hospital and it was at that point that i -- they told me that he didn't make it. >> how tough has been for you the last couple of days to not only see that but to lose one of your best friends like this? >> you know what, it's a terrible incident. declan sullivan was my best friend at notre dame and, you know, we had so many good times together and i got the chance to be his roommate. we were going to live together next year. and, you just, you can't prepare for things like these. it's just a horrible circumstance and i want to go ahead and pray for his family and make sure everyone keeps them in their prayers.

>> maurice can, i ask you, so many thousands of people have turned out in support of declan and his family. what does that say about what type of young man he was? >> yeah. um, there's like a thousand people at his mass and like another thousand outside. declan was really outgoing person, he made his goal to try to remember the names of everybody he met. there's been a really good community atmosphere on campus, especially in fisher hall where people have come out to support him a lot. >> chris, let me ask you a final question, we heard the athletic director mention in the segment we showed before coming to you guys about taking care of the young men at notre dame. do you feel everything was done to take care of all the young men with declan being the name i'm singling out here? it just seems as though, i don't know, a smarter decision should have been made by the head coach or somebody at that field? >> you know, regardless of a position or a decision should have been made or a certain action, it won't take -- it

black friday the day after thank giving the super bowl of shopping, the official kickoff of the hole die shopping season. as a sign of the economic times, retailers are pushing them as never before. some as early as this weekend. great to have you with us, eric. >> nice to be here. >> obviously retailers are doing this because the economy has been tough. their business has been problematic. who is starting out this weekend and where can we expect these deals. >> all the big retailers are doing something to advance sales into november. but, let's start with the biggest of all, walmart. walmart is concentrating on its toys, its what -- the toyland, books and that sale starts on the 7th through the 24th. stops around thanksgiving. sears may be the first, it's already started and its sale goes through the end of the day. it is called black friday now. target starts the sunday before

thanksgiving. toys r us is also doing a toys catalog. that starts on the sunday before thanksgiving, as well. >> jcpenney, another retailer -- >> four single-day sales including one they call the biggest sale day of all. >> it is funny. i actually saw a commercial a couple days ago for j.c. penny talking doorbusters, traditionally the language we hear around black friday. are the deals you get right now this time of year, are they going to be as good as the deals you get on the traditional black friday? >> some will be but it is selective. the real discounting doesn't start until the real black friday starts. just because something is called black friday now or the black fray day sale in advance doesn't necessarily mean a great price. so do research. >> also online a lot of retailers, of course are, doing deals. >> well, that's right. about 40% of shoppers are saying they will do some of their shopping this holiday online. it is very important to the online retailers, too.

amazon.com has already started what it calls the countdown to black friday, started yesterday. >> they have electronics there? >> they do. they have a great deal on a plat-screen tv. every friday, they are doing, you know, different item for sale. >> and staples and walmart.com, i saw. >> staples, as much as 50% off starting the sunday before thanksgiving and walmart.com that sale starts early this month. >> really there will be these deals. do we think in terms of this year's holiday season the deals are going to be similar to what we found last year or are we going to see a new type of deal? >> very similar to last year. the retailers are carefully husbanding their inventories. you won't see sales drop off a cliff like in 2008. 5 to 10% i did counts through black friday even to the holidays themselves not seeing them much bigger than 35%. if you want to get your shopping done ahead of time, go ahead. you might not get the rock-bottom price but will be

hartstehartstein -- good morning to both you. >> hi. >> a big question parents ask. is there a signature time, okay, you are free to do now. >> i think 12 is a good cut-off but know your kid. some aren't ready at 12. you want to make sure this re. >> we are not talking about letting them go on halloween night. different groupings parents need to take into consideration. >> go out with people they know, kids they know. not a huge group because they end up getting in trouble than more of the smaller groups. you want to know who they will be with and where they are going to be. you want to know what route they are taking, what houses they are going to so if you need to find them for any reason you can. >> so good to have a chap reason. i'm a big advocate of a chaperone. what do parents need, though, to tell the kids, to kind of get them prepared for the first couple halloweens on the road with just their friends. >> absolutely. they want to set up the rules,

what are the rules, what behavior do they expect. are they going to be, the curfew, and talk about the expectations of the behaviors for their kids, on their own, showing they're responsible, what do you expect them to do and how do you expect them to do. >> thank you very much. katie, talk about tracking devices, when i have kids i'm literally going to have a computer chip implanted in them because i'll want to know where they are every minute of the day but not far from that, tracking devices because it keeping track of this em is paramount. >> if you don't want to insert a wireless chip into your kids there are different gps tracking devices. this is perfect, zoompack you can put anywhere and be covert but a great example to put on a bracelet, or on a child t. will actually let you know where they are at all times. you have to check your gps location but it will will also set up safety zones. if they outside, you will get an alert via text message or

dobson. good morning. did anybody see this one coming? >> no, i didn't see this one coming. you always hope marriages will work out especially with children, older and younger than miley but i think part of what happened the stress of being in the public eye. i interviewed a psychologist who said there is a real stress in raising these kids. we saw her pose at 15 for "vanity fir" wrapped in a sheet. they took a lot of flack for that saying where is billy ray and her mother? everything was scrutinized. >> i don't want to make you play psychologist but is that wo, i guess, one of the many strains, not just a kid who got -- she's got a little bit of fame. i mean, this is megastar, mega-wattage. >> there are a lot of strains with the hollywood lifestyle. we see families don't know what to do with it as it comes in and

when more in the family have that lifestyle the more stressly. billy ray was in the business, miley was in the business and her mother was her manager. the money, sudden fame and travel going to concerts, the film sets, they are pulled in different directions is stressful. >> tough to have a normal life. you talked about the mother being the manager type thing, is that an issue we hear about this all the time back to britney spears and some of these others, i guess, it seems to add another element to the mix, which is not necessarily always good. >> it is one more element. the mother is criticized even more heavily by the public and media every time something goes wrong. with mily, as she's grown up through the years she did a performance many called a pole dance, criticized earlier this month by the parents television council for a racy music video not only do people say where is her mother? but she's her manager and criticized for in a couple of

ways. >> that photo shoot from a i canple years back. talk about parents of stars that actually have made it. >> well, there are a different ones that have made it through and ones that haven't. leann rimes, as soon as she made it big her parents were pulled two different directions. her song "blue" released in 1996 and within a year the parents split up. also, lindsay lohan with the "the parent trap" a lot of people like alyssa milano, and hayle joel osmet, he's parents are okay. >> we always hear about marriages without kids being involved but hollywood couples them falling into a trp of the pressures and the attention. but now, i guess when you mix the kids into it, i guess everybody thinks, how bad can it be the kids are making so much money the parns have nothing to worry about it. >> that can be part of the problem. some parents may want to split up but don't have the financial resources to have two homes and pay for a divorce.

bacon bits everywhere and chive oil here i'm going to drizzle over the top. >> beautiful. what are you calling these for the halloween special. >> crab devilish eggs. >> all right. to the next thing. >> here, we are going to make this awesome, one of my favorite things ever a calamari, here is the kung pow sauce starting with sesame oil, ginger, onion, saute that for ten seconds, fresh scallion. deglaze with this sherry. a lot of times you'll find it in a chinese cooking. >> okay. >> here a bit of hoisan and oyster sauce. and a little bit of water. you can use chicken or vegetable stock. >> to break it down a little? >> totely. cook it up for a minute and thicken it with a bit of corn starch. >> hmm. now that it is liquefied, you

have corn starch with water. >> equal parts with water and add it. as it boils it gets thick. then we come down here, it becomes thicker. >> this becomes in this. >> it stays in your fridge for a couple of weeks, really delicious. in the pan, a bit of olive oil, carrot, celery and onions also called mirpaux. >> french. you can actually buy it in the store, i've seen it. >> i'm sure you probably can. >> i'll throw in fresh mush rools, saute for ten seconds and the calamri. >> that's were it looks like before it goes on your plate. >> spooky, isn't it? >> it s. >> we'll cook that for just a second and add some of the sauce. stir that around. and then over here while that's cooking. >> how do you know, as far as the seafood goes you've cooked it long enough. >> if you overcook it they are

like rubber bands. it is sort of tough to cook but one of my favorite things. i have coconut rice i steamed in a banana leaf. >> how do you do it? >> wrap it, coconut milk, mango, steam it for a couple of seconds. so, that's just about done. always in kungpao, you have fresh peanuts, so you have a little in there and a little for the garnish. >> that's beautiful. >> sort of goes right in. and then here, garnish more of the peanuts. >> fancy. >> very fancy. >> it's halloween. >> i love it. my favorite part of the meal, these mint, what, the bacardi and. >> candy corn mohitos, when i think of halloween i think, of course of candy corn and rum. >> obviously. the two go well together. >> some lime soda water. normally they are mint, lime and sugar but here i made a candy corn sugar and will put that in,
