good evening. i'm ann notarangelo. a new field poll shows tight races in two state-wide contests with many voters still undecided. in the race for lieutenant governor, san francisco mayor gavin newsom has a slight lead over incumbent abel maldonado. in the attorney general race, steve cooley has 39% and carmelo harris has 38%. and don knapp on how the analysts are reading the results. >> reporter: san francisco mayor gavin newsom is five points ahead of state lieutenant governor abel maldonado in a new field poll. that's beyond the margin of error but not so far ahead the mayor can relax says the poll director mark decamillo. >> we've been seeing that gavin newsom has had an advantage over maldonado in this race in each of the previous polls that was the case. and we're seeing it again in this case. but the lead is not comfortable. it is very close. but it is a lead nonetheless.

it is outside the margin of error. >> that's why i'm going the route of the public utilities commission. >> reporter: maldonado won public support in his role as acting government in the aftermath of the san bruno gas line explosion. and decamillo says maldonado may benefit from late movement among latino voters but the contest between the attorney general and steve cooley and camilla harris is too close to call and they're separated by one point. givens on the death penalty may play a role. >> is there any moral ray on your conscience with being such a supporter of the death penalty. >> no. it is the law. >> harris has not sought the death penalty in any case since she was d.a. but says she will if elected attorney general. >> i am personally opposed to the death penalty but i will follow the law. >> i think whoever wins los angeles county will probably win this election. also, the nonpartisans are in play, and they're very closely

divided in terms of voter preferences in the attorney general's race. we are seeing a gender gap. it appears that harris is now appealing to larger segments of women. cooley, larger segments of men. and so it appears these contests may well be decided by the undecideds. the independents. and those who identify with the candidate by gender. and decamilla notes that newsom appeals to woman. democrat jerry brown began a three-day campaign tour in his hometown of oakland today. he appeared at a rally for the oakland congress woman barbara lee. brown will fly to appearances around the state for the next several days from eureka to san diego and appear at get out the vote rallies organized by state labor unions. meg whitman was in orange county promising jobs and fresh ideas and had events in san diego county and in sacramento, and she will be in cupertino tonight. both candidates are trying to

reach as many voters as possible this weekend. bart service getting back to normal tonight after a person in a wheelchair was hit by a train. it happened at 2:00 this afternoon at the hayward bart station. bart says it appears the man in the wheelchair got too close to the edge of the platform as the train was arriving and it rolled on to the tracks. amid the man's belongings, police found a gun. he is hospitalized tonight. no word on his condition. checking bay area headlines, the man accused of attacking a retired priest, he says molested him as a child, has been released on bail. 43-year-old will lynch is suspected of assaulting gerald lindner last may at a jesuit retirement center in los gatos and he says he and his brother were molested in 1957 during a church camp -- 1975 during a church camping trip. he was never charged but the church paid a settlement in the case. a traffic clerk at the fremont hall of justice will

report to prison monday for refusing traffic citations in exchange for money. he was arrested in september after offering to dismiss ticket force two people in exchange for a payment of $400 from each person. a second clerk is also charged. and farewell fast pass. san francisco muni riders have only a few days left to switch to the clipper card. beginning monday, the paper a fast pass will only be available on the new electronic clipper. and the "a" fast pass is needed for muni and bart in san francisco. the "m" fast pass on muni goes away in april. you probably saw. it the giants made it look easy in games one and two. but tonight, in game three of the world series, in texas territory, the rangers are making a statement. still among the sea of red and white and blue, ken bastida shows us quite a bit of black and orange. hi, ken. >> yeah, that's why they play the game, right, ann?

so we figure out who is real and who is not. giants giving them a battle tonight. but the rangers are showing why they won the american league. and you know, as far as fans go, well, i found some giants fans out here today who say no contest. >> the exact minute that the giants won their game, i got in line and got my tickets. >> you might be able to take the san francisco out of wayne but you can't take the giants out of him. >> i joined the bill area in the bay area and retired in west texas and been here ever since. >> did the military give you a raise or what is going on here? >> no, no,. this is my giants. this is what i want. my giants. >> we found them. lots of giants fans who made the trek from the bay area, because, hey, this is the world series. >> last chance in my age, to make it to the world series, and see the giants do it. >> ben baez and his daught -- daughter candice came here from

you know it's bad when the press asks if you'd take a lie detector test. meg whitman didn't tell the truth about not voting or about how long she lived in california. she got caught in insider deals at goldman sachs. she changed her story about physically abusing an employee. she campaigned as tough as nails on immigration knowing her housekeeper of 9 years was undocumented. her tv ads have been condemned as false and misleading. and even her hometown newspaper said meg whitman has demonstrated "a loose relationship with the truth" investigation a disturbing discovery has

launched the homicide investigation in san francisco. police found a woman's body inside a home on chestnut street in russian hill around 4:30 this morning. they went to the home to do a welfare check on the woman. and investigators are not saying how she died or how long she may have been dead. a pregnant woman is among three people shot outside a movie theater. it happened last night in daly city at the pacifica plaza along unipera sara boulevard. police say the suspect opened fire after being bumped by one of the victims. the suspect got away. all of the victims are expected to survive. the cow palace is under fire yet again after another rave landed teens in the hospital. some in critical condition tonight. because of an apparent drug overdose. anne makovec with the growing cry to shut down the venue. >> people are crazy. >> reporter: last night, crazy turned dangerous. 16 people were taken to the hospital during a party at the cow palace. three considered critical.

with symptoms of drug and alcohol overdose. >> we saw a lot of altered levels of consciousness. a lot of inability to maintain their own airway and a lot of vomiting. >> reporter: the event was called sub sonic spook fest. a concert, otherwise known as rave. this is the video we found on youtube from last night. >> most people are on ecstasy. like you will walk through the hallway and the eyes are like zombie eyes. >> reporter: we met 19-year-old noria bernard this morning, as she came to pick up her car. she also attended a rave here in may. this is youtube video of that party. and nine people were sent to the hospital for drug overdoses that night. two later died. she says it is easy for things to get out of control. >> it is just so many people at the rave and there is nothing much they can do. >> reporter: the cow palace is a state-owned venue run by the department of food and agriculture, and local politicians have been asking the state to shut it down, but it hasn't happened yet. >> reporter: the senator leeland yee says he is planning

to roll up his sleeves and wait for the new governor and we need to bring accountability to that cow palace. but this event worker thinks it is being blown out of proportion. >> those kind of things are part and parcel to an event like this. there are going to be always some bad apples. >> reporter: we came to the daly city police department to get their cake on last night's events and we're told they will not be answering any questions nor giving any updates until tomorrow at the earliest. in daly city, anne makovec, cbs 5. well, the skies are clearing just in time for the witches to fly. lawrence has the pinpoint forecast for halloween night. next. ,, david harmer wrote an education plan titled "abolish the public schools." he even called our schools "insidious" and "socialism." as families struggle to raise their kids, to provide a good education,

halloween party in san francisco's castro district again th we have a reminder for you, there is no halloween party in san francisco's castro district again this year. city leaders are promoting a home for halloween safety campaign. they're encouraging people to stay in their own neighborhoods to celebrate. and violence in past years ended the gatherings. the fourth year in a row with no official halloween party in the castro. >> of course the kids are out trick-or-treating tomorrow evening. what will we find? >> last week, when we looked at this, i thought it was a spooky forecast. but i'm not feeling so spooky anymore. >> good. >> looking good around the bay area. clouds out there right now. even a couple of scattered showers trying to show up outside. but not much. it really isn't going to be much overnight tonight. widely scattered showers if we

see any at all. and high def doppler picking up on some of the moisture and not much showing up there, toward the peninsula, we're seeing a couple of scattered showers in over the bay but just a light one, and that's what we're going to find throughout the night tonight. and maybe into early tomorrow morning. and for the most part, tomorrow, just a couple of passing clouds, and the temperatures are going to stay mild inland and 60s and low 70 s. and 60 near 70 degrees and out to the coastline, a little breezy and it looks like pretty nice weather. numbers around the bay area, in the 50s and 60s. a little cool, out toward the coastline but not bad. and around the state, warmer weather in the central valley around 69 degrees in fresno. partly cloudy and 67 in sacramento. but the further you go, the better chance you will have to run into raindrops. there is a cold front that is actually moving into the state. but the good news for us, the high pressure is building in ahead of it and it will send most of the moisture streaming up in this direction. we will stay dry for halloween and just a couple of scattered showers overnight for our skies. so some pretty good weather coming our way. with that in mind, it looks like overnight tonight, still a chance of a couple of raindrops

and computer models are trying to pick up on that just a bit. you can see a couple of scattered showers as we roll the clock forward to 7:00 and beyond and most of that is located in the north bay and we have even tried to kick something in tomorrow morning. i don't think it will happen but plenty of skies making our way through the skies, and as we roll through the day, it doesn't look too bad and the skies part a bit with more sunshine and the temperatures start to warm up and it looks like trick-or-treaters heading out and looking pretty good. and 69 for a high in livermore. and 67 and partly cloudy skies in santa rosa. and it should be about 69 in san rafael. and 69 in san jose. and 63 in pacifica. looking out over the next couple of days. we have a heat wave coming. this one is truly indian summer. the first heat wave after the first frost of the season. the temperatures moving well into the 70s. getting near 80 degrees in the warmer spots inland. on tuesday and wednesday, with an offshore wind. that will clear you out all the way to the coastline. still some cool nights but warm weather is coming our way. and then it looks like as we head into the next weekend, more clouds on the way.

and there is a chance of showers returning in the bay area, as we look toward saturday. all right. how about those trick-or- treaters? well, it is going to be a little spooky looking out there. you have some partly cloudy skies. but it doesn't look like there is going to be any rain. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. it gives the kids an extra sweater or light jacket. cool outside but right now it looks like it is going to stay dry. that's a look at weather and here is gary with sports. >> thanks, lawrence. college football saturday saw a few top 10s going down and coach singletary with an appearance on letterman? it is about the bears of cal. and did they figure out how to win on the road? stick around and find out. sports is next. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

win last weekend, and they sh ey were at gary here for kim coyle. and talking football. >> football on saturday. why not? cal had an easy win last weekend and they should have because they were at home. winning at memorial stadium is not the problem. it is winning on the road. something they haven't done so far this season. the bears played oregon state. a team they have not beaten since 2006. first quarter, beavers running back chaquiz rogers takes the direct snap and a wide open kobe prince. and later in the first, it gets worse for the bears. kevin riley injured his knee and he left the game. no update how much time he will miss. as he gets carted away. back up, brock mansion, the most meaningful action of the

season. 138 yards. and a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. oregon state led 28-0 at the half and put it on cruise control in the second half. rogers has over 100 yards and three touchdowns. the beavers blow out cal 35-7. cal is averaging 47 points a game at home and 14 at home and the defense has given up 8.5 games per game but 36 points on the road. and less than packed house to see san jose state and new mexico state. and jordan techla, look at that pass, that is awesome. late in the fourth. he airs it out to jaloll beachham for the go ahead score. five seconds to go. final chance for the aggies. >> rolls out to buy some time. getting pressure. throws it. touchdown aggies! >> part spartan fans, sorry about that, new mexico wins on the final play. the spartans fall to 1-8. tragic news out of south bend earlier this year,

307 yards. hello end zone. sorry. i mean there is going to be a lot of corny stuff. exactly. so one week after knocking off number one oklahoma, missouri goes down and nebraska wins 31- 17. nba news, warriors guard stáef curry will not travel with the team for the game tomorrow night. and he reinjured his ankle during last night's win against the clips. the warriors outscored the clippers and cruised to a victory. darrelle wright had a career high 24 points as the warriors improve to 2-0 for the first time since 1994. and latrell sprewell was the leading scorer at that time and they only finished 26-56 so let's not get too excited bought it doesn't mean anything. mike singletary is the only coach in the league with his own segment on the late show with david letterman. >> coach, if you had to, could you put your finger on the problem? >> here is the problem.
