thanks for joining us, i'm betty nguyen. president obama begins a one-day a country that fondly referred to him as their adopted son. security in indonesia's capital jakarta is tight this morning. ahead of president obama's arrival. anti-u.s. protesters gathered today, in front of the u.s. embassy. the latest rally against the president's trip. he's visiting indonesia, trying to boost the economy back home, and ties with muslims around the world. he'll sit down with indonesia's

president and visit one of the world's largest mosques. he'll also give a major outdoor speech that's expected to draw large crowds. >> indonesia is the second stop on president obama's four-nation tour of asia. he spent three days in india, focusing on the topic americans are concerned with most, jobs. >> i want to be able to say to the american people, when they ask me, well why are you spending time with india, aren't they taking our jobs, i want to be able to say, actually, you know what, they just created 50,000 jobs. >> reporter: the president announced more than 20 new business deals between india and the u.s., where tens of billions of dollars. that includes ten c-17 military cargo planes that india will purchase from boeing for $4.1 billion. a contract that supports more than 22,000 american jobs in dozens of states. >> i want both the citizens in the united states, and citizens in india, to understand the benefits of commercial ties between the two countries. >> reporter: later this week,

president obama will visit south korea for aolations. so the president's message will once again be a balancing act. betty? >> all right, whit johnson joining us live in washington. thank you, whit. former president george w. bush has no doubts water boarding was legal, and saved american lives. water boarding is simulated drowning, and considered torture by human rights activists. but in an interview with nbc news coinciding with the release of his memoir "decision points," president bush says he believed the so-called enhanced interrogation technique was critical to preventing another 9/11 attack. >> we used this technique on three people. captured a lot of people and used it on three. we gained valuable information to protect the country. and it was the right thing to do, as far as i'm concerned. >> one of the prisoners who was

water boarded was 9/11 mastermind khalid shaikh mohammed. president bush said he would make the same decision again. elizabeth smart returns to the witness stand this morning in the trial of the man accused of kidnapping her over eight years ago. smart is now 23 years old. she was 14 when brian david mitchell broke into her utah home and threatened her with a knife. smart testified, quote, i could feel something across my neck. i thought i was having a nightmare. it was just indescribable fear. smart says mitchell took her hostage and then raped her. that's not disputed by his attorneys. smart was spotted nine months later in salt lake city. mitchell's lawyers say he suffers from mental illness. if convicted he faces life in prison. in connecticut, the man convicted in a brutal and deadly home invasion has been sentenced to death. after the jury came to its verdict, the husband and father of the victims said it's not about revenge. it's about justice. manuel gallegus reports. >> reporter: it was a unanimous decision. jurors condemned killer steven

hayes to death for a brutal home invasion in suburban connecticut. jennifer hawke-petit was raped and strangled. her 11-year-old daughter michaela was also sexually assaulted before she and her older sister were doused with gasoline and left to die. doctor william petit survived the attack. >> i was glad for the girls that there was justice, because i think it's -- i think it's a just verdict. but mostly, mostly i was sad for the loss that we have all suffered. >> reporter: authorities say hayes and co-defendant joshua komisarjevsky broke into the home, beat dr. william petit unconscious with a baseball bat, and forced his wife to withdraw money from a bank, while the rest of the family remained hostage at home. >> we have a lady who is in our bank right now who says that her husband and children are being held at their house. >> reporter: the girls were eventually tied to their beds, and the house was set on fire. >> michaela was an 11-year-old little girl. you know.

tortured and killed in her own bedroom. you know. surrounded by some animals. and had a great future. strong and creative person. >> reporter: hayes defense attorney tried to portray him as a bumbling crook who had never committed a violent crime before. his lawyer painted komisarjevsky as the mastermind. hayes said he wanted to die for his crime. komisarjevsky goes on trial next year. manuel gallegus, cbs news. in other news, it may be later today before power is fully restored in new england following a surprisingly strong storm. in maine, more than 60,000 homes and businesses lost electricity, and another 15,000 in new hampshire. there were wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour monday. that downed trees and power lines. a presidential commission investigating the gulf oil spill found no conscious effort on part of bp to trade safety to save money.

but the panel says that doesn't mean bp is not at fault for the largest offshore oil spill in u.s. history. the panel found more than a dozen questionable, but explainable, decisions leading up to the blowout. on the "cbs moneywatch" stocks in asia tumbled this morning. ashley morrison is here in new york with more on that. good morning, ashley. >> good morning to you, betty. asian markets lost ground. japan's nikkei lost half a percent today after hitting a three-month high while hong kong's hang seng was down more than one percent. today wall street gets another round of corporate earnings. the rally ran out of steam. the dow slipped 37 points while the nasdaq added just one. the word from the chairman of president obama's economic advisory board is not good. former fed chair paul volcker said he sees no short-term way to reduce unemployment, now holding at 9.6%. volcker also expects, quote, limited increases in economic activities for the next year or more. americans are borrowing less

and paying off more debt. the federal reserve bank of new york says americans have paid off nearly $1 trillion in debt over the past two years. the number of open credit card accounts is down more than 20%. economists say tighter credit and voluntary changes in consumer behavior are responsible for those reductions. well, google is offering free wi-fi to passengers on airtran, delta, and virgin america. the early holiday gift will be available from november 20th to january 2nd on domestic flights. in-flight wi-fi has been slow to catch on, partly because of the cost. it usually runs passengers between $6 and $13. and gamers all over the world are hearing the call this morning. call of duty black ops, the latest installment of the first person shooter game was released at midnight. retailers at gamestop, best buy and others stayed open to handle the expected large crowds. the release is gunning for the all-time first day sales record

things are already going very well. i'm happy to report right now, just got this news, that we are already number one in tbs' key demographic, people who can't afford hbo. >> his first show guests actress seth rogan and "glee" star lea michelle and conan strummed along with jack white. a new study found that so-called hypertexting is dangerous. researchers say sending an excessive number of text messages increases teenagers' risky behavior. hypertexting is defined as sending more than 120 texts per school day. those teens are 90% more likely to report four or more sexual partners than other teens. they're also much more likely to have tried cigarettes, alcohol and illicit drugs. under pressure from parents, fast food restaurants have been offering some healthy alternatives for children on their menus. but from watching their tv commercials, kids may get a very different message. randall pinkston reports.

>> you can swing into burger king. >> reporter: kids are getting a steady diet of fast food commercials. >> breakfast is back at mcdonald's. >> reporter: a new yale study of marketing by 12 of the nation's largest fast food chains finds children as young as 2 see three of these ads on tv every day. >> i have a son who is 7, and he is usually the one who, oh, whatever toy is out, we have to go to mcdonald's. >> reporter: in response to the study, mcdonald's said 100% of our children's advertising features dietary choices that fit within the 2005 usda dietary guidelines. while fast food restaurants are highlighting healthy choices, such as apples and milk in their ads, the study finds restaurants are automatically serving french fries and soda with kid's meals most of the time. the report's authors say out of more than 3,000 possible kid's meal combinations, just 12 meet researcher's nutrition guidelines for preschoolers.

>> reporter: christine marchuska has always had a passion for fashion. but never thought she'd see her own name on the label. >> it's a lot of hard work. you know, i didn't think it was going to happen overnight. i always didn't think, though, that i would have the success that i had. now this is the dress that i'm wearing. >> reporter: especially since she came to the fashion world with no experience at all. an ivy league grad, marchuska had followed a different path, to wall street. until the credit crisis in 2008. when morgan stanley laid off her entire department. after six years in banking, marchuska was burned out, ready for a fresh start. so she gathered up her savings, took a sewing class and c. marchuska was born. this is made from bamboo. it's an environmentally friendly label using materials like hemp and organic cotton. everything is made locally and the line reflects her taste and values. >> i want to make sure that it included all these different aspects that i'm very passionate

there's no doubting the destructive force of a hurricane. which is why new advances are being made in the science of protecting your home. jeff glor takes a look. >> reporter: it's an attempt to beat mother nature, by being mother nature. a $40 million, one of a kind lab in richburg, south carolina, that replicates real-life natural disasters. here, 105 fans power 140-mile-per-hour winds. and a tank holding 750,000 gallons of water. this is what it's like during a category 2 hurricane. the results, just watch.

the house on the left was built to typical midwest building code. the one on the right, what the institute for business and home safety considers safe. a more fortified code. >> it's important that people understand that building codes are a minimum standard. there are 13 states in this country that have no codes at all. and certain other states the codes are not very well enforced. >> reporter: the goal is to encourage people to build better structures. and reduce losses. both for homeowners, and the insurance industry. not surprisingly, they funded this lab. >> crashing houses, there's a lot more to learn. >> reporter: julie first began by crashing cars at the institute for highway safety. now, she's here. >> our ultimate hope for this facility is that for many years to come we'll be identifying different ways that houses, commercial structures fail. if we can figure out why they come apart, then we'll know better how to keep them together. >> we have metal straps -- >> reporter: in a structure that's fortified there are small adjustments like a door that opens outward instead of in, so the house doesn't pressurize.
