today. congress is back in session with democrats still controlling both houses, but only for the next month. so the question is, will he be able to get anything done during this lame duck session? cbs correspondent nancy cordes joins us from capitol hill. good morning, nancy. >> reporter: good morning. the first item is tax cuts, the bush era tax cuts set to expire at the end of the year. the president wants to extend some of them, the republicans want to extend all of them. but they are now signaling a willingnessing both sides, to compromise. heading home from asia, president obama told reporters on air force one he's open to a compromise with republicans who want to extend the bush tax cuts to everyone including the wealthiest americans. >> i want to hear from them how strongly they feel about it, particularly given that they are also saying they want to control the deficit and debt. >> reporter: republicans signaled they might be open to a temporary extension of all the

tax cuts for a couple of years. >> if that's all we can get out of the president and he is the president, so we'll work with him on that. >> reporter: for democrats cutting a deal now is crucial because in january they lose their house majority. nearly 100 newly elected members, all but eight of them republican, arrived in washington this weekend for a one-week orientation. >> have you spent much time in washington? >> i have not. we're looking forward to it. >> reporter: more than a third have never held elective office before. 32 of them are small business owners. at least 37 of the incoming members consider themselves part of the tea party, determined to make their mark on the republican party. >> i'm not going to compromise my principles. that's important that we stick to our principles. as long as i'm fighting toward a limited government, free markets, individual liberty i'm willing to accept i'm not going to get an ideal system.

>> reporter: today all of the new members get a crash course in government. it's an all-day class called congress 101. >> nancy cordes in washington, thank you very much. also in washington, cbs news political analyst john dickerson. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, harry. >> let's talk about the bush tax cuts. we have been saying it for months, a lot of people don't understand what's at stake here. president bush put in these tax cuts a couple of years ago set to expire at the end of the year. what is all the haggling about? >> right. they were designed to expire at this time, and but the problem is nobody wants them to expire but republicans and democrats can't agree at the moment on how to basically design them. and if they can't come up with agreement then everybody's taxes will increase. so the white house and the president says he doesn't want to give a tax cut to millionaires and billionaires and republicans say you've got to give a tax cut to everybody. so now they are trying to dance around and figure out how they can come up with some kind of

agreement because they know in the end they have to do something. >> one of the things that's floated in the last 48 hours or so was okay, let's let the tax cuts -- let's keep this permanent for almost everybody except people making over $1 million. and then maybe add an incentive in here and we'll have tax breaks for small business people. might that actually get through? >> senator mark warner of virginia, a democrat, has suggested that. republicans don't want to de-link these two. if they happens many the middle class tax cut will pass and they lose the larger tax cut for everyone. this is being floated, it's one of the things that will be in the pot. there is another suggestion from chuck schumer, democrat of new york, to raise that family level up to $1 million. everybody under $1 million get as tax kuxt i don't think republicans are going to jump right at those two alternatives at the moment. >> right. congress leaders of congress and the president supposed to have

dinner pretty soon and -- what's the anticipation about that? >> they are going to have dinner. there will be some humble pie and some crow eaten probably. and they will have to get past the fact that they all have been saying terrible things about each other on the campaign trail for the last several months. this is the beginning of the icebreaking process. the president has said and said on his way back from his trip last night, that he wants to go back to his first principles, one of them is bipartisanship, so he's got to start trying to find a way to work with these republicans. >> so interesting even as these young congress folk come into town there is a tug of war already in the republican party, the "d" party folks saying we're not sure we want to go to these orientations because we don't want to be corrupted by you. >> a lot have come to push against the system and we'll see it in two ways. there is a vote among republicans about what to do about earmarks. earmarks are not a huge part of the budget, not a huge creator

of this deficit. very small indeed but they are symbolically large. a lot of the candidates signed pledges. some of the members who came back are you know, in the senate, want to keep earmarks so there will abfight there. then also this fight about the tax cuts. what kind of compromise will republicans stand for with the president. >> john dickerson in washington, thank you. good to see you. erica hill is at the news desk with a check of the rest of the headlines. >> good morning to everyone at home on this monday. seven people are dead this morning, at least 20 injured following an explosion at a resort hotel on mexico's coast. >> reporter: a powerful explosion ripped through the restaurant of a resort hotel south of cancun, mexico sunday, killing five canadian tourists including a 9-year-old boy. two mexican hotel employees were killed. witnesses reported that the floor of the building blew through the ceiling sending bodies, glass and pieces of the

restaurant flying. the grand rivera princess hotel is a luxury 676-room resort. next month an international climate summit is scheduled to be held in the area. at first it was feared the blast might be terrorist or drug cartel related. >> translator: it is a sad event but the possibility that it was an attack has been discarted as we said from the beginning, where the reports from the hospital said the wounds might be from shrapnel they are not. >> reporter: investigators thought that cooking gas might be to blame. it appears the blast was caused by accumulation of gas from a swamp. >> taliban inser gents on the attack for the third straight day. rockets hit a fuel dump igniting a huge fire that destroyed several vehicles. there were no casualties in that attack. nato reported two more deaths from an attack in the same area yesterday which pushes the total

now to five. u.s. and nato officials outline a possible exit strategy from afghanistan. afghan government forces could take on security duties starting next year with an eye to ending the u.s. combat mission there by 2014. the u.s. is expected to present elements of the plan at a nato summit this week in lisbon. >> the leader aung san suu kyi is talking about renewing her party. to discuss ways to have it declared legal again. she has been meeting with attorneys. the 65-year-old spent 15 of the past 20 years under house arrest. >> a qantas airline 747 forced back to sydney this morning. it did land safely but it happened after an electrical problem on a flight which was supposed to go to argentina t. good news, none of the 221 on board was hurt. this is the fourth safety scare

pilots and a lot of passengers say that the new security procedures violate a person's rights and some are even calling for a boycott during the busy thanksgiving holiday. cbs news travel editor peter greenberg is here with more. >> good morning. >> what are the main concerns you hear? >> we're talking about scanners 2200 security check points, that's a lot of scanners, about $150,000 each. privacy, health and safety and of course the process of going through them itself. >> exactly. how long that will take. let's talk first about the privacy issue. i for one want to know who is looking at these images, are they recorded anywhere, do we know the answers to those? >> the tsa claims they are not archiving them, can't print them, can't store them. people aren't believing that. and for those people like myself who have gone through the machine you have to take everything out of your pockets, everything comes out. then they scan you. and then there is a guy there talking to somebody in an enclosed room to see if you are

cleared. >> so that person has to clear you. do we know how much they can see? it's like a virts you'll strip search or a grope. after the underwear bomber they want to see everything you are carrying inside your clothing so. there is a reason for it. >> the patdowns, some need to forego these machines and opt for a patdown are more invasive. >> they changed the rules. they are now allowed to use fingers and the palms of their hand to feel around breasts, genitalia, it's more invasive. >> have 3 gone too far? >> you can opt out of the scanning machine but they are not going to tell you. have to ask. then they have to get an agent over there. >> let's talk about delays. that's main concern people have over the holidays. how much extra time will it take if you go through these machines? >> the old ones you walk through. the new one you have to take

everything out, then stand like this, they scan you as the thing goes around, then you have to wait for clearance. that's going to take between three and four minutes. multiply that by the number in line and that's assuming nobody opts out. >> or find anything and have to check. >> exactly. assuming that you opt out, now they have to get an agent over there and they don't have enough agents to do that. if everybody want toss do this boycott and opt out the lines going to be really long. >> what do you suggest? are there solutions? >> one, not every airport has the scanners. they are coming in slowly. some you'll notice at the check point there is is a scanner and a magnetometer. go for the magnetometer f. you go for the scanner you'll be later. >> or go to an airport that doesn't have them. >> if you can. most don't have that choice. try to do one without the scanner. they're still learning this process at the tsa, they don't have enough agents and if janet napolitano is asking for patience there is a reason. >> peter greenberg, thank you.

now back to harry. >> turning to the case of kyron horman, the oregon boy missing since june. his father is holding a news conference to again ask anyone with information to come forward. jeff glor has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. kyron's parent sas they still have hope he'll be found alive. after months of a fruitless investigation authorities have launched a new search for evidence, this time under water. dive teams from eight agencies began the pain staking process of searching the murky waters of a channel. sophisticated sonar helped pinpoint dive sites for the crew of 50 but they were hampered by watt sore black one official called it diving by braille. >> not a lot of visibility. some places only a foot. but they take it you know, slow and take it carefully. >> reporter: it's been more than a month since officials on

horseback scoured an islands for evidence. while the search seems exhaustive, investigators have not found the one clue that might crack the case. >> this is not a homicide, it's not a kidnapping for hire that we know of or ransom. and the fact is there is not even a discernible crime scene. >> reporter: the latest search comes days after cane horman, kyron's father asked the judge to punish terri horman if she doesn't answer questions about her step-son. terry was the last known to see kyron alive and has been a focus of the investigation. in divorce documents kane insists that terry has information and she wonts talk because her testimony will lead to criminal liability for kyron's disappearance. >> no judge in a divorce case is going to force terri horman to testify. she's entitled to maintain her silence. >> reporter: the two are locked in a bitter divorce battle also fighting over custody of their daughter. terri horman withdrew her request for parenting time with the 2-year-old after kane

francisco police to a stabbing suspect in n. a cable car >> it is 7:25 a.m. a trail of blood lead san francisco police to a stabbing suspect in china town. a cable car conductor was attacked on mason street yesterday afternoon while the car was stopped for cable repairs. police also took in three people for interfere being that arrest. no body hurt in two overnight crashes in tiberon one involving a police car. a suspected serial car thief was involved in both crashes he ran away, police are still trying to find him. he is believed to be the same man who lead police on a chase last monday morning. a 13-year-old getting a special escort to school this morning his school district recently told that boy to take an american flag off his bike when he road to it to school. there he is on his way to

in the world and they looked at almost 20,000 healthy women, average age 57, most health care professionals. anyone from a nurse's aide to a ph.d. and found those with a higher degree of job strain actually were at 40% increased risk for overall cardiovascular disease and an 88% increased risk for heart attack. >> how did they define job strain? >> for this study, job strain included people who felt they were in job where is they had little or no decision-making, were demanding jobs and in particular didn't allow them to use their individual creativity. >> so not necessarily the boss, but the worker bees? >> exactly. again, this could be a ph.d. could be an r.n. it wasn't necessarily someone at the lower end of the work hierarchy. >> got t. looked at job security, so many are feeling in this economy. how many are feeling this? >> job insecurity can be someone who has a job fears they may be

leezing it or someone out of work po leshly. basically they found those that stated they a high degree of job inxurnty also were at higher risk for obesity, hypertension or high blood pressure, high cholesterol. all of those things as we know really stack the deck for us in terms of risk for cardiovascular disease. >> ideally, we eliminates stress, that's not realistic. how do you handle the stress in a better way? >> in general, again, this is really important, maggie, whether you're at home working. remember, a lot of people work out of home or at a job you feel is giving significant stress, try minimize it's negatives and maximize the positives. obviously one of the biggest negatives people should strive to avoid or cut out completely is smoking. how many times -- >> i knew you'd say that. >> outside standing on the street smoking. stip it altogether. the worst thing can you do for your health. meditation, deep breathing

exercises. you can't leave your desk or step outside and take a mental health break, do deep breathing, ten maintains day can really, really help. obviously avoiding junk food, especially in the health care profession, there's junk food everywhere. the water cooler. >> you have access. >> you want to minimize that and eat more healthfully even at work. if you can, take a walk during your day. i know near my hospital i see a lot of health care professionals in my hospital walking around the block. around the hospital during their breaks. that can do wonders, not just for your mental or psychological well-being but your physical well-being. >> do you find stay-at-home moms have the similar stress as working moms? >> she haven't done that study yet, absolutely. they're balancing a lot of balls in the air. worrying about their children, what they're doing at work if working from home. all of that stress can lead to a reduction in your immune system, causing chronic inflammation and

soon, i was changing tires. shoveling snow, and driving alaska's version of a dream machine, the zamboni at the university of alaska, anchorage. then, an air ambulance company e-mailed me. they he had an open seat on a flight to washington state but it required an overnight pit stop in fairbanks. wrong way, but i had no other options. air ambulances are used frequently throughout alaska. for some, the only way to get medical care is by airplane. what are you to these people you help? >> um, i hope -- my goal is to treat patients the way i want my family and friends to be treated. >> although i wasn't a patient, i felt that same type of care. nonetheless, i had to pay for it by unloading 300 pounds of medical cargo. although i only had 12 hours in fairbanks, i was able to land a

job at china hot springs and remote resort 60 miles outside of downtown fairbanks. bernie carl put me to work. i chopped wood. even carved martini glasses out of ice for their ice hotel. foeshz magazine voted this the dumbest business idea in 2004. we tell everyone foeshz can kiss my [ bleep ] it features and amazing collection of ice sculptures, ice bar and chandeliers made of individually carved ice crystals. >> here's where you'll be staying tonight. >> the resort gives all their employees room and board and bernie showed me where i'd be sleeping. >> can you sleep in a 20 degree room like this? >> if you're a man. >> oh. >> pretty cool -- and cold. 20 degrees all night inside. in the morning, it was time to defrost and then to wing my way to the lower 48. as we took off and i looked down
