first, breaking news out of new zealand this morning. more than two dozen coal miners trapped and no one knows if they're alive or dead. let's led to erica hill for the latest on that. good morning. >> good morning. we can tell you rescue efforts are getting under way in new zealand this morning for the 27 coal miners missing after a mine explosion. the mine is on new zealand's south island about 180 miles southwest of wellington, the country's largest coal mine, a tunnel running horizontally into the side of a mountain. the explosion occurred about a mile from the entrance. >> there is some communication because the employee who did walk out first rang the surface and said that i've -- i believe there's been an explosion underground. >> there have not been communications with the missing miners and not clear if any of them survived. president obama is in portugal in morning for a nato summit which will focus on afghanistan. air force one landed in lisbon a short while ago. cbs news senior white house

>> at six minutes past the hour, that's the latest weather. now over to harry. the thanksgiving travel rush begin this is weekend and this year along with the usual stress of flying, new security procedures are causing some extra worries. the denver post snapped these photos showing what airline passengers some of them anyway going through these days including enhanced pat down techniques that sparked a rebellion by some fliers. tsa administrator john pistole joins us from washington. good morning. >> good morning, harry. >> let's talk about the enhanced scanners in operation in some airports, spreading all over the country and basically what they
7:07 am
do is you can kind of see everything or at least the person viewing the scan can and folks saying i'm not so interested in having a tsa examiner look at everything there is to see of me. >> right. harry, the number of issues involved here and of course this is a latest technology we believe to deal with the latest threats as we saw both on christmas day and as we saw recently with the cargo plots, the way that the terrorist particularly al qaeda and al qaeda and the arabian peninsula focused on well designed, well concealed devices that can cause catastrophic results, bring down an airliner, so this technology is designed the provide the best possible security. it also addresses a price issue from the standpoint of an examiner who's in a separate area and sees an image, not a photograph. i've seen all kinds of things on tv and elsewhere that is not accurate so i think there's a lot of misinformation there. but the bottom line is that security officer never sees a
7:08 am
person and the person never sees the image. >> what happens is you have got certain pilot's unions, some people saying this is not healthy for me. i'm going to opt out. you have people who feel like it's too invasive. i'll opt out. the new pat down techniques which are not getting rave reviews to say the least. is there a way to do this that people won't feel -- some people basically feeling violated. >> it is a challenge, harry. no doubt. what we're trying to do is address the latest intelligence about the threats we have, coupled with tishss people are rightfully concerned about. we've worked extensively with the pilots and think we have a good way forward with them. talking about later on. as we explore different options. but when it comes down to the pat down, actually very small number and small percentage of people will actually receive that pat down if they opt out of the advanced imaging technology
7:09 am
and those 70 or so airports. what we're trying to do is address the people like the christmas day bomber that knows the technology and says i have a nonmetallic device. >> wow. last but not least, one of the other issues is this, people say you're violating the 4th amendment protecting me against unlawful search and seizure. is there a way to answer that? >> there are administrative authorities that give the department and tsa that authority. obviously, the bottom line is trying to ensure that everybody that gets on every flight can be assured with high confidence that everybody else on that flight has been properly screened. i think, really, the bottom line, harry, is that as we look at the holiday season here and thanksgiving, everybody wants to get home to see family, see friends, enjoy the holidays, and so we just ask for a partnership between the traveling public and those in tsa, the men and women trying to protect you and your

loved ones. >> john pistole, we appreciate your time this morning. >> thank you, harry. sarah palin's new book is not in stores yet but you can still read part of it because excerpts turned up online and as you might imagine the author is not happy about that. cbs news correspondent nancy cordes is in washington this morning with the story. good morning, nancy. >> good morning, maggie. palin appears to criticize everything from popular tv shows to the first lady. >> let's restore america. >> reporter: less than a week before it's scheduled to go on sale, sections of sarah palin's new book "america by heart" have been leaked on the internet and some of the topics she tackles may be surprisinsurprising. >> we haven't seen a lot of political criticism in the book so far in the parts leaked to the media. mostly social criticism about things like "american idol" or levy johnston. >> i don't care what she did or where she was at. >> reporter: palin is critical
7:11 am

2012. but of president obama she does say that he seems to believe it is an unjust, unequal country. she even takes a swipe at michelle obama drudging up that comment of being proud of her country the first time when he husband started to win collections. provocative stuff, maggie. >> it is already. thank you. 7:12, back to harry. >> thanks. for the latest of london where there could be an announcement this morning on where prince william and kate middleton will be married. as we wait, there are new details coming out on the wedding plans and cbs news correspondent elizabeth palmer is outside buckingham palace with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: hi, harry. yeah, new details on all their plans. the royal couple is probably really coming to grips for the first time with the cost of their mega celebrity. prince william had said he wanted to keep details of the place where he popped the

question secret. private. well, that lasted all of three days. "the sun" newspaper prints a photo of the cabin in africa where it happened with close-ups of the room, the bed and what the couple wrote in the guest book. as for the actual venue for the wedding, well, that's still a mystery. probably not for long. serious contenders are st. paul's cathedral, maybe windsor castle and bookies taking joke odds on london's football stadium. but westminster abbey seems to be the clear, public favorite. >> i think westminster abbey. traditional and where it's been for many years. >> church. aware of the coronations taken place. so i think from a historical place. >> reporter: the abbey's big enough. seats 2,000 in the splendid stone interior. >> coronations take place there. funeral services take place there. royal marriages take place
7:14 am
there. i think it is very important that we maintain another tradition in the united kingdom with our royal family. >> reporter: meanwhile, the rebranding of kate middleton has begun. the palace wants us to start calling her catherine. she's winding up the role in the family's party supplies business and preparing to enter public life, even before the wedding. accompanying prince william on the official and charity visit that is are such a large part of the royal job description. now, of course, with bated breath everywhere and the news could come today. >> liz palmer this morning in front of the palace, thank you very much. maggie? here at home it's been nearly six months since now second grader kyron korman disappeared in portland, oregon. investigators have scoured

wooded areas and put on wet suits to search for evidence underwater. on thursday, kyron's father spoke with cbs news national correspondent jeff glor who joins us this morning from portland. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: maggie, good morning to you. the wall of hope remains here but as you mentioned nearly six months after kyron went missing, this case has clearly strained police, the community and this week especially his family. when kyron korman went missing june 4th, the parents were not together and always stood together. >> i don't know that i'm getting through it. >> reporter: that changed when young sharply criticized the ex-husband this week saying i just can't stand by and support the choices he's making. indicating he with held information before kyron disappeared about the danger kyron's stepmom posed. young now says that horman had a severe hatred and could have hurt him in the worst possible ways. some of the comments got
7:16 am
attention. did they surprise you? >> i wouldn't say they surprised me. we're -- this is going on for so long. we're all just emotional strung out. >> reporter: what they agree on is terry is responsible for the disappearance and though terry's not talking, this past week dive teams searched understood water for the first time, volunteers have scoured a nearby island, still, nothing. how much do you worry that people will forget? >> oh, i worry about it all the time. we went out yesterday to one of the local malls and passed out fliers to the businesses and a couple of comments of, oh, i thought he was home already. and that just reaffirms that we got to keep getting it out there. >> reporter: while searching, kaine holds down a full-time job and acts as a single parent to 2-year-old kiara. how challenging is that for you? >> it's a heavy load but you just step up.
7:17 am
>> reporter: she longs for her missing brother. >> she has me sit next to her and read a book while she reads a book because her companion's not there. the first holiday season coming up, have you thought about how you will handle that? do you try not to think about that at all? >> it is difficult. i miss him the same every day, whether it's thanksgiving holiday or just a tuesday. it doesn't change. >> reporter: at the end of our interview, kaine turned to the camera addressing his son directly. >> we love you very much. we're still looking for you. every day. home is safe. it's just kiera and i. we're waiting for you. >> reporter: he says the last time he spoke to terry horman was in late june and has no plans to see her except in court. >> thank you for that story, jeff. still ahead this morning, another disappearance may be closer to being solved. we may finally know the answer of what happened to natalee
