theme... more much- needed ra d the bay good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. it is becoming a common weekend theme. much more needed rain falling around the bay area from light sprinkles to heavy downpours. more to come along with much colder temperatures. more from our meteorologist lawrence karnow. >> rain coming down very hard around the bay area. we have had lightning strikes as well. small stream flood advisory until 7:00 p.m. in the evening. san francisco. also san mateo valley. east bay as well. be careful on the streets. lots of water coming down right now all courtesy of thunderstorms popping up outside. we have seen a pretty good squall line making its way through the bay area. that line moving a little bit further to the south and as it does we have seen more lightning strikes where we are seeing those stronger storms. san leandro more strikes. another cell making its way

onshore producing lightning strikes headed over towards palo alto and sunnyvale. and the possibility of snow in the bay area. we will talk about that in a couple minutes. back to you. heavy snow coming down in the sierra right now. one of the biggest storms we have seen in recent years. up to 2 feet of snow is expected to cumulate. most of it fresh, dry powder and that is good news for skiers for the thanksgiving weekend. if you're going though, chains are required over all three major sierra passes. an overnight fire left more than a dozen people on the peninsula homeless. it broke out about 3:00 a.m. in the morning at a two-story apartment building at 408 north bay shore. firefighters evacuated both floors and had the flames extinguished in 30 minutes. no one was injured but 18 people are displayed. damage is estimated at $750,000. the cause not yet known. now that it is getting colder many of you might be

turning on heaters. in order to keep everyone warm pg &e is considering a move that has got a lot of critics really heated up. don knapp shows us why they fear another pipeline disaster. >> reporter: pg ande is thinking about increasing the pressure. the added pressure may be needed to deliver more gas on cold days when demand is high in san francisco. investigators have yet to determine the cause of the san bruno transmission line explosion but a pressure spurt is one of the things being looked at. understandably higher pressures are a concern for those who live around here. as we reported in october pg ande has linked lines on the peninsula to bypass the broken section of line 132. that's the line that exploded. to ship gas to san francisco. as a safety measure, line 101, closer to highway 101 and line 109, further west, have been operated at about 20% lower pressure since the blast.

to make sure there is enough gas on cold days they are raising the pressures on all lines. >> lines 101 and 109, take lines that run parallel onto the peninsula, we could raise those operating pressures, first of all, in conjunction with them but without their direct order. for line 132, that will be in very close consultation as with the other lines but that would take an order from them. >> reporter: but they are opposed to raising pressure. they were inspected with the same technology that missed problems in line 132. the line that exploded. pg &e says it can get gas from certain industrial customers and conservation from everyone. in san bruno, don knapp, cbs5. before san bruno there was this. a deadly gas explosion in

sacramento county. and pg &e may have to pay for this one too. state investigators have concluded the utility is responsible for the blast in rancho cordova. in 2008 one person was killed. yesterday the public utilities commission filed administrative charges against pg &e. the san francisco chronicle reports a judge will decide whether to impose fines. a new power plant for the east bay has cleared a legal hurdle. the epa says it will not revoke cal pine corporations federal permit for the project. critics challenged the technology for reducing emissions from the plant. it will be the first plant in the nation that will be required to meet greenhouse gas emission standards. a funeral for an oakland parolee killed by police was held today. officers responding to a domestic dispute two weeks ago say they believe jones was reaching for a gun when they

shot him. it was an electronic scale commonly used to weigh drugs. the officers involved are on paid leave. a victory for a high school football team. a compromise has been reached allowing it to turn on its field lights. neighbors sued the school last fall saying the temporary light towers violated the height restriction. they can play up to four games. one thursday night and one saturday or sunday playoff game. owls enlisted to help danville ranch and the homeowners association in the area is installing four wooden boxes in hopes of attracting barn owls. the birds prey on the rats and gophers, whose numbers have spiked this year. they feel it is a safe solution

to the problem. the pain of not saying good- bye, never seeing a loved one again, and the question, what really happened? those thoughts and those feelings have haunted some bay area families for decades but loved ones that are missing in action are not forgotten. >> very hopeful. >> reporter: in this envelope a letter from a long lost love that could provide the closure that margaret has waited more than six decades to find. >> this was the last picture he received. he received before he got captured december the 1st. >> and who is that? >> that's me and his daughter. >> reporter: the doctor she conceived with her american fiance duane just before he left his german post for korea. they wrote letters then she heard he was a prisoner of war. >> awful. terrified. terrified. and i always went to the forest with a stroller and cried in there. >> reporter: time went on

without word. >> when you work and build your family he was never out of my mind. >> reporter: there were monthly meetings held in different cities across the country. this is all part of a program the military started back in 1995 to reach out to missing soldiers' families. >> to speak with her for the first time and tell a little bit of who i am and to learn who my grandfather was was an amazing moment. >> reporter: margaret's dna was taken. chris' dna was swabbed since he is the soldier's relative. even if duane's remains are never found, margaret is glad

there had been speculation that dellums would leave early, a lobbying job the oakland mayor saying he will finish out his term. there had been speculation that he would leave early, perhaps, to take a lobbying job in washington, dc. mayor-elect jean quan today also denied any notion of the mayor's plans to leave early. >> the mayor issued a statement and it is very clear he plans to complete his term. we are starting a series of meetings over the next few weeks. so i don't think he is going anywhere.

>> rumors about the mayor's early departure were fueled by his decision. he cannot accept outside work while he is in office. he owes back taxes. boy scouts picking up donations for local food banks. the scouting for food project collects food left on doorsteps this morning. scouts are hoping to collect 600,000 pounds in the bay area this week. in south san francisco members of the golden gate harley club loaded barrels of food donations on a truck. they have been collecting food for needy families over the last month at a dealership. the bikers also escorted donations to san mateo where it will be distributed by samaritan hands. cbs5 has launched its food for bay area families fund- raiser and you can help by dropping nonperrishable items at any whole foods or make a cash donation at the checkout.

a new permanent exhibit in oakland helps explain climate change and how it affects the earth. award winning t.v. science guy and an interactive exhibit. hands on activities also demonstrate energy saving strategies for daily life. the kids are having fun there. lots of puddles today for kids. >> climate changing quite rapidly. cooling off. getting wet around the bay area. thunderstorms to talk about. thunderstorms rolling on through bringing with them some pretty heavy rainfall and some occasional lightening rolling across your skies. outside right now very slick on the roadway. be careful if you're headed out there. a lot of puddling on the roadways. going to make for dangerous travelling over the next couple hours. high-def doppler picking up on rain. pretty impressive band making its way through now. scattered showers an even thunderstorms still embedded in the cells. in hayward now headed eastward. union city more showers and

lightning strikes in towards santa cruz. you see this flashing light here, those are a couple of lightning strikes making their way along the coastline. pushing onshore. could see more lightning in the evening hours. going pretty well all around the bay area right now. in toward danville. walnut creek lots of rain up there. folks, more rain and it will be heavy at times through the evening hours. it will then begin to taper off. travel very carefully out on the roadways. lots of puddling out there on the major highways. in the meantime though, throughout the night tonight, rain, isolated thunderstorms and occasional hail. gusty winds below some of the thunderstorms and even some snow over the mountain tops. down to about 2500 feet. tell you what, we are thought done with the system yet. we have got more on the way overnight tonight and in through tomorrow. maybe an inch and a quarter in parts of the east bay. half to three quarters of an inch in the peninsula. temperatures running in the 40s and 50s right now. so you've got that cold air

that is diving into the bay area thus the possibility of some snow in the forecast here and of course lots of snow in the high country too looking at a pretty serious storm making its way in that direction. winter storm warning. more snow on monday and tuesday. so if you want to get up in the snow may want to wait a couple days because after that looking pretty good. the storm system diving into the bay area carrying a lot of speckled clouds. sign of the cold air making its way in from the gulf of alaska. going to bring more cold showers to us and prospects of some of the snow over the mountain tops. let's roll the computer model forward throughout the evening hours. 7:00 p.m. heavy band making its way through right now. that moves on by. then becoming more widely scattered. possibility of some thunderstorms popping up into the afternoon hours. things trying to settle out just a little bit. more rain on the way for the bay area. not a total washout. by the afternoon looking much improved but still scattered showers in the forecast.

not only for tomorrow but for monday. things begin to dry out. but the good news is come wednesday and thursday, thanksgiving, yes, they look spectacular. lots of sunshine and dry weather headed back towards the bay area. that's a look at weather. sports now. >> thanks. college football at wrigley stadium was a tight squeeze but they got it. some came to play and some came to fight. who won the rumble and game? it is all coming up in sports. stick around to find out. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

was their rivals from berkeley.. the bears... it's true... these two all that stood between stanford and its first 10 win season was their rivals from berkeley the bears. they do not like each other. this was the scene even before the game started. right there ejected because you can't do that. each threw a little punch before it got rolling. deep in cardinal territory. decided to keep it himself and take off. watch this right here. he says boom, get out of my way and he knocked him down. >> not many quarterbacks can deliver a hit like that so that's why we have to spends more time on it. steven taylor with a 95-yard drive with his first of three touchdowns to make it 10-0 cardinals. sophomore has 14 touchdowns this season. second quarter. stanford up 17-0. luck drops back. deep into double coverage. look who is there.

somehow doug baldwin came down with it. great catch. fired a strike to zach right here for another cardinal touchdown. making it 24-0. and things just kept getting worse for the bears. michael thomas. turned it over three times. so with less than two minutes to go in the game, the cardinal offense comes back onto the field and they score again. baldwin with another fantastic catch. stanford led 45-0 before they got back on the board. where is the axe? they blow out cal 48-18. tied for the most ever with the 48 points in the history. the bears had no answer for luck. threw for 235 yards and 2 touchdowns. >> best player in the country.

for the point. they had to do that all game long. ran for over 500 yards. friendly confines including confines. what do you know? fifth referringed trailed with less than a minute ago. tigers win. their sixth win of the season by seven points or less. college hoops san jose state knocked off oregon 75-72 in eugene this afternoon. first win over a pac-10 team since 1992. spartans 3-0. niners will try to make it three straight wins. troy smith will once again get the start at quarterback despite alex smith being cleared to play. instead alex will be the backup. >> i felt like i played well
