7:01 am
captioning funded by cbs and a good wednesday turkey day eve to everybody. good morning, everybody. i'm harry smith. >> better start getting everything ready for tomorrow. i'm maggie rodriguez. welcome to "the early show." american teenager amanda knox spent her thanksgiving eve in court beginning the appeal of the murder conviction there. this is a huge risk because if she loses she could wind up spending life in prison versus 26 years. ahead this morning, we'll be speaking with her parents about this process. but on this wednesday, we begin with getaway day. if you're one of the millions of americans heading off this morning, allow yourself extra travel time and promises to be slow going on the roads and especially at the airport. we have team coverage of today's big holiday rush. we begin with cbs news front mark straussman in atlanta this morning. mark, good morning. how's it looking there?
7:02 am
>> reporter: good morning, maggie. it is getaway day and travel is moving closer to the old days, pre-recession levels of traffic. 94% of people traveling in the car and on the road where there's bound to be bad traffic and sometimes bad weather. as americans set out on the road on one of the busiest travel days of the year, some find more than just traffic. in seattle, snow is making roadways slick and icy. in utah, blizzard conditions closed part of a major interstate and wet weather could continue to slow travel as it moves across the nation's mid section. estimated 40 million people will drive for the turkey and stuffing, that's a 12% increase from last year but still way down from the nearly 60 million people who travel for thanksgiving back in 2005. >> you just have the strong desire for americans to spend time with their family and friends during this holiday more so than any other holiday out there. >> reporter: one issue is pain at the pump. the average price of regular gas
7:03 am
is $2.87 a gallon. up 12 cents since the beginning of october and 23 cents from this time last year. >> i spent over $100 a week in gas. >> reporter: in spom places, prices above $3 a gallon. no matter what you're paying or going, aaa says the most important thing, safety first. leave plenty of time for traffic. >> i think it's very important iffy're traveling by automobile to make sure you practice patience, understand that the roadways and the major arteries are going to be busy. >> reporter: if you're heading out later today, especially in areas having bad weather, it matters even more to give yourself the time you need to get there safely. mark straussman, cbs news, tlantd. >> and now we take to the airports where lines are expected to be worse than usual because of that possible traveler boycott of the travel new screening procedures. cbs news correspondent cynthia bowers this morning at chicago
7:04 am
o'hare airport. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, maggie. i'm glad i'm not traveling. the new procedures spawned their own phrase -- don't touch my junk. you know it's a concern. the lines look like they're just beginning to fill in. everybody seems pretty calm. laughing and joking about the process and it is so far so good. more than 1.5 million people are expected to take to the air today and nearly 4% increase from last year. but it's not numbers that cause concern this time. >> i'm anxious about flying with the stuff going on lately. >> reporter: today is dubbed opt-out day. an online campaign protesting the procedures. >> above your head like this. >> reporter: the campaign urging passengers to opt out of body scans and receive the time-consuming pat downs started by businessman brian sodergren. >> we have to step back and see how much privacy we give up in
7:05 am
the name of security and are there other more reasonable methods to use? >> reporter: many travelers believe doing anything to hamper the screening process will unfairly increase times in lines. >> it is really unfair to the majority of the public that doesn't object. >> people should really be helping each other out, not trying to slow each other down. >> reporter: for all the attention received, many passengers won't face the scanners. only 68 airports have them. most only have one. airport managers in dallas/ft. worth say they'll be surprised if there's problems. >> we don't expect to see long lines here because of the issues regarding screening. >> reporter: there's this factoid. 385 full-body scanners nationwide. they're at small airports, too. pilots will not be asked to go through or flight attendants, just us, the traveling public. maggie? >> cynthia at o'hare this morning, thank you so much,
7:06 am
cindy. now here's harry. >> i got it. joining us now from reagan national is the man at the center of the screening procedures storm, tsa administrator john pistole. good morning. >> good morning, harry. >> if people are heading to the airports today, when's the single best piece of advice to get them through the screening process as quickly as possible? >> partnership, harry. it comes down to be prepared, what to expect and working in partnership with the men and women of tsa who just want to get you to your destination safely, securely. >> i'm talking to a lot of folks talking about this around the office. there's so many myths about this. not the least of which is, well, you know, the tsa guy can see your -- you know what. demythify this process and explain that somebody is in another room and never see your face. >> right. no. there's been so much out there,
7:07 am
harry. i appreciate the opportunity. that is misinformation. so obviously, if you go through an advanced image technology machine which they're about 0 airports, almost 400 machines now, it is a blurred image. not a photograph or anything like that. it is a blurred image of the body. seen by a security officer in another area in a room and that person never sees the passenger and the security officer dealing with the passenger never sees that image. images are not stored or transmitted. no cell phone, cameras or anything else allowed in the security rooms. >> the difference between this technology and the technology that we're so accustomed to over the last couple of years is it can see things that the other technology can't, especially, for instance, the explosive that the guy landing at detroit airport had in the underwear last christmas. >> that's right, harry. it detects things that the walk-through metal detector that we all know does not detect.
7:08 am
such as a christmas day bomber with that explosive device that was all nonmetallic and he could walk through the walk-through metal detector. he could get on that plane and kill everybody on board. so that's what we're trying to avoid. >> all right. this is created its own sort of tempest in the teapot. maybe even a little bigger than that. people suggest that the government is overreaching its bounds with both the kind of scanner and the pat downs that come as a result of opting out. how do you respond to that? >> well, i think everybody wants to arrive safely so everybody agrees on that. it's a balance between privacy, security and reasonable people can disagree about that. most recent gallup poll came out i understand indicates that 71% of the people that travel on somewhat regular basis support our efforts to keep everybody safe and balancing the security with those privacy protections we have in place. >> last but not least, at the
7:09 am
minimum, if you had it to do over again, would you have mounted some sort of public relations campaign to sort of roll this out in a way that the traveling public would have said, oh, i get it. this is coming and what i can expect? >> yeah. harry, we talked about that. i made the decision not to do that because i was concerned that we would be not only informing everybody as we wanted to but we'd also be informed terrorists of gaps in the security, that we were trying to shore up so it was a balance. i went with that decision to try to keep everybody safe. >> thank you for your time this morning. >> thank you, harry. >> appreciate it. maggie? now erica hill at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning to you at home. president obama is promising to defend south korea where there are still nearly 30,000 u.s. troops. both south and north korea on alert this morning after north korea's shelling of an island yesterday. it is some of the worst border
7:10 am
violence there since the korean war. cbs news correspondent celia hatton joins us from seoul with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, erica. the mood is fairly calm. it's clear that the tension is rising between the korean rivals. the devastation from yesterday afternoon's battle on the island of yeonpyeong became clear today. south koreans are mourning the loss of two marines and two civilian construction workers. evacuees arriving on the mainland spoke of their terror. the situation, well, how can i describe it with words? i was really scared says this woman. for witnesses on the island, the destruction was clear. i saw a sea of flames. my school library burned down, explains this 10-year-old. the south warned north korea of, quote, e november mouse retaliation if the north attacks again. kim jong-il's regime maintains the south started the violence
7:11 am
arguing seoul is pushing the countries to, quote, the brink of war conducting naval xer siss near a disputed border. the united states has reaffirmed the participation in naval exercises with south korea near yeonpyeong island sunday. >> south korea is our ally. it has been since the korean war and strongly affirm our commitment to defend south korea as part of the alliance. >> reporter: the "uss george washington" will also take part and pulled out of tokyo to sail to south korea this morning. but not everyone feels that way. as tension rises on the korean peninsula, many are concerns that seoul and washington are running out of options for dealing with pyongyang. erica? >> celia, is there an idea that it's due to the secession of power there? >> reporter: yeah. many people north korea is becoming aggressive as kim jong-il prepares to hand over power to his son and rally
7:12 am
support in the north and warning outsiders that his country is far from crumbling. erica? >> celia hatton in seoul this morning, thanks. hope of closure fading once again in the natalee holloway case after it was determined that a jawbone found in aruba did not belong to the alabama teen. officials say the jawbone discovered on a beach is human and it is unclear who it belongs to. she disappeared in a who is graduation trip to aruba in 2005. dutch investigators used her dental records and that's how they knew the jawbone was not connected to holloway. >> we learned that natalee's wisdom teeth were taken out in 2004 and the bone we found had a wisdom tooth in it. >> the main suspect in the disappearance is joran van der sloot. prosecutors in aruba say they lack evidence to charge him. he is in prison in peru charged with the murder of a 21-year-old woman. in italy, day one of the amanda knox's appeal of murder conviction and sentence.
7:13 am
a prison van brought her to court for a 15-minute session. knox's lawyers say new evidence shows the student from seattle did not kill her british roommate three years ago. joining us now from seattle are amanda's parents curt and edda knox. good morning to both of you. as we look at this appeal, you, of course, aiming for acquittal. the prosecution is aiming for life. is this worth the risk of amanda to spend more time, in fact, her entire life behind bars? >> well, we believe that, you know, this appeal will actually bring the truth out and get this over -- this wrongful congre ffn overturned. >> absolutely it is worth it. we don't believe it could go any other way than to an acquittal. >> there are a few changes this time around. there's a new judge who has a record of overturning convictions. and there's also a new jury. edda, why are the two factors important as you move into this appeal? >> well, i think you need to
7:14 am
have -- you know, fresh eyes really take a look at the lack of evidence in this case. and take a look at the fact that there's no evidence that connects amanda to the crime and maybe these people are fresh eyes into looking at this. >> curt, this new jury as i understand it by law has to have a higher level of education than the previous jury. do you feel that that is going to, in fact, be a point in your favor? and if so, why? >> well, i think as you look at the physical evidence and the complicated dna evidence, i think anybody who is better educated can have a better understanding of it. and if that is true, and the same thing happens with the judges then we believe that this wrongful conviction will get fixed. >> next hearing for december 11th. we'll be watching. thank you for being with us this morning. >> thank you. >> thank you. two positive signs this morning for the economy. new unemployment claims fell
7:15 am
last week. falling to the lowest in more than two years. also, americans earned more money in october and even spent more. however, orders for durable goods came in, they fell last month. that is a bad sign for manufacturing. in london this morning, thousands of students protesting government plans to raise university tuition fees. other protests are taking place across britain. at one point, a group of protesters surrounded a police van and smashed the windows. and just before thanksgiving, video of some really brazen wild turkeys here in new york city. a flock of turkeys, there they are. i don't know playing a game of thanksgiving football or not. they hang out on staten island. in case you think they're running from a thanksgiving dinner, good news. they're protected by law so if all goes well they shouldn't be on tomorrow's dinner table but who knows who they run into? dave price. >> this is -- this is a prime example of video of going cold
7:16 am
turkey right there. nice to see you, everyone. collective groan? let's take a look at the maps. you want to groan, we have got big travel troubles heading into a very, very busy day across america. look at this. here's what we're dealing with first. snowy conditions, blizzard conditions in some locations. not a lot of snow. one to six inches. but certainly coming down heavily with lots of wind and
7:17 am
>> that's 7:17. at 7:17 that's a look at the weather picture. guys, 0 over the you. >> thank you so much, dave. dave knows this. getting married can be expensive. he just did it over the summer. dave's wedding nothing compared to prince william and kate middleton's. getting more details -- i'm sorry. yours much more fun, i'm sure. details on the wedding, the cost and how much her parents pay

wedding in what's being called a semi-state o indication, code for the clip-clop of royal carriages, enough glittering diamonds to make you squint and a who's-who guest list. the white house can expect an invitation. we know the wedding will be a nationwide party, another holiday in airplane airplane where there are already two other major holidays here leading at least one newspaper to calculate the wedding could cost about $8 billion in lost economic production. we know the costs other than the huge security costs will be borne by the happy couple's families, who don't think the queen was make an advance payment by putting a coin on the westminster collection plate at a service yesterday. we're not sure how the middletons will kick in although they've done very nicely out of their party good supply company. but, there's business money and there's royal money. anyway, we're told this time, unlike past times, the wedding planners will keep the current

be heads of state there, it's reportedly not at the top of the couple's priority. would you be surprised say the obamas didn't get an invitation? >> well, here's the story i'm getting already from insiders behind me is that we don't actually anticipate the president to attend the president but we do think for that extra touch of glamour the gorgeous michelle obama will make an appearance. quite who she brings remains to be seen. i think what is interesting is they don't really think that the president may want to attend because of all the extra security, helicopters flying above, things like that. that might be a little more intrusive, i think. >> let's talk about the details coming out this morning about the actual wedding. a report in "the sun" claims sclubly, prince harry chosen as the best man. which wouldn't be surprising. can you confirm that this morning? >> word is out, maggie, he's
