7:01 am
captioning funded by cbs we've got a lot of coverage of black friday for you today. you are looking at a live shot from a mall in massachusetts outside of boston. crowds don't look too bad, right? these are the smart shoppers who have gotten there to the toys r us in philadelphia. they looked at the circulars, been online. they know what they're shopping for. they're doing that kind of hit and run thing. you hit the mall, get what you need, get to the next store, the next store. >> and get out. >> exactly right. wow. we have seen some pictures this morning. look at the parking lots. oh, lord. not my sport but we'll have the full contact coverage of black friday for you here as we welcome you to friday morning after thanksgiving. good morning, everybody. i'm harry smith. >> i'm maggie rodriguez. as i left the building at 4:30
7:02 am
morning, there were people on the sidewalk and he said, do you know where best buy is? i'm like, yeah, that way. unbelievable how early it's on this morning. also this morning, aex collusive interview. there's an alabama man back in the states today after serving 18 months in prison in australia for the death of his wife while scuba diving on their honeymoon. this video by a fellow terrorist shows a lifeless tina watson on the ocean floor and now her husband gabe watson is facing charges and a trial in this country and we'll be speaking exclusively about the case this morning with his attorney. but we begin with black friday. the mad dash for discounts well under way now. correspondent rebecca jarvis at the coastland center mall in naples, florida, with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, maggie. like you, i saw people this morning arms overflowing at 5:00 a.m. with shopping bags.
7:03 am
for retailers, the moment of truth. for shoppers, a chance to snag the deeper discounts and they started earlier than ever this year. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> door busters. >> reporter: after the talk in the ads, black friday is well under way with shoppers joining 138 million estimated that will hit the stores this weekend up 2% from last year. the deals started at the stroke of midnight. >> no, never gotten up on black friday. i normally like to avoid crowds. >> reporter: just a few hours later, target, macy's and jc penny opened their doors. >> looking at the ads and so i can get more for the money. >> reporter: some didn't wait until black friday. for the first time in the history, sears was open all thanksgiving day. >> it's gray thursday. >> reporter: toys r us opened 10:00 thursday night which included 600 new pop-up stores

that operate in the holiday season. for retailers, black friday and the fourth quarter are now more important than ever. >> november and december alone is 40% of annual sales. >> reporter: for chains like sears and best buy, that number is well over 50%. retailers hope they'll have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season. and there are reasons for optimism. a 2.3% increase in sales is predicted overall this year. a 16% jump jump in online sales is forecast and the government reported in october personal income grew. with that in mind, stores are stocking up adding inventory in the hopes that the gifts will fly out the door. retailers aren't taking any chances. they're using the internet to help make sure shoppers know how low they're willing to go. more than half will send an e-mail to customers and nearly 40% will use facebook. >> the mood around black friday for the retailers is tempered i think the mood around consumers
7:05 am
given the advertisements and e-mails they're getting is creating a sense of urgency. >> reporter: and that urgency is really paying off for retailers. 10.5% of shoppers say they've completed half of the shopping. >> just half. you mentioned an expected increase of sales of 2%. how's that expected to affect the economy overall? >> reporter: well, this has major implications for the overall economy, maggie. because remember, the consumer spending accounts for a major part of the economy. the more we spend, the better off the economy is in many respects and equates to jobs. 600,000 temporary workers hired for this holiday and the better it goes, the more likely to take on that employment full-time. >> rebecca jarvis at a mall in florida, get out while you still can. >> reporter: thanks, maggie. >> here's harry. >> thanks. joining us to help out with the deals retailers putting on the
7:06 am
shelves is scott krugman, vice president of the national retail federation. good morning. >> good morning, harry. >> so how are retailers reaching into consumers' pocketbooks to get more money out of them this time around? >> consumers certainly don't suffer from a lack of spending power. a lack of confidence. in the absence of jobs, the best cure for a lack of confidence, a great discounts on wonderful merchandise so i think in the stores, in fact, they have been out for several hours, they're seeing amazing deals on laptops, games, dvds. and apparel, of course. there's no shortage of bargains out there for all the bargain hunters. >> may not be a shortage of bargains but we have seen a lot of retailers said we're going to keep our stock way, way down. we don't want that overhead. we don't want to try to figure out how to get rid of it in january. is there enough to buy if you go to the mall and you want to buy? learned the lessons of two years ago with too much inventory.
7:07 am
and i think they're going to bring in the right balance. however, this means they don't want to be left with excess inventory for unplanned markdowns to eat into profits so the advice to the consumer, pick it up now because once it's gone, basically, it is gone. >> where will we find the very best deals this holiday season? what kinds of products? >> well, no doubt electronics are huge in terms of deals for the holiday season. we're seeing $100 bluray players. $200 hd televisions. and no shortage of 50% off on video games. so clearly, electronics are a good way to go. 80% of jewelry. there's buy one, get one free in terms of apparel. literally, across the board, especially on black friday and cyber monday, there's no shortage of deals. >> what about gift cards? because year by year by year we find out surveys say number one
7:08 am
requested gift. just buy billions of dollars the growth in gift cards is amazing. >> they really have. we expect $24 billion on gift cards. up slightly from last year. in the last couple of years, people were shying away from gift cards because they were looking for more sale merchandise. but as the economy's becoming les of a factor, people are more willing to pay full price for the gift card. >> scott, we thank you for your expertise this morning. appreciate it. >> thanks, harry. >> happy shopping. happy shopping with a way to equip yourself today before you head out to be as efficient as possible but right now erica hill at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning to you and everyone at home. some strong words from north korea this morning. warning the border dispute is bringing north and south korea to, quote, the brink of war. as correspondent celia hatton reports, there's new trouble near the disputed island that north korea attacked earlier
