>> coming up we'll look back at the career of the man who made us laugh. early this monday morning, november 29th, 2010. look at your tv. if you're not looking this way, that is one spectacular sunrise. a perfect way to start the week. good morning and welcome to "the early show." i'm maggie rodriguez. >> i'm harry smith. >> we're going to have the latest on the disturbing story of the teenager who had dreamed for years about killing fellow americans with a bomb. he tried to do that this weekend at a tree lighting ceremony but failed thanks to the fbi. he will be in court and we're going to have the latest on the case and we'll be speaking with a national security expert. >> first that massive leak of thousands of pages ever secret documents is causing quite a stir this morning. the founder of wikileaks, the website that released the

documents says the diplomatic cables show the u.s. is spying on its allies. meanwhile, the white house is condemning the leaks saying they put our diplomats and intelligence professionals at risk. cbs news senior national security correspondent david martin is at the pentagon with the latest. good morning. >> good morning. italy's foreign minister call this is leak a diplomatic 9/11 which could blow up relations between countries. some of the state department documents are embarrassing. russian president medvedev is described as afraid. chancellor merkel avoids risk and is rarely creative. french president sarkozy is called a naked emperor. car sigh is driven by paranoticia.

then there are the more sensitive cables which quo arab leaders as urging the u.s. to cut off the head of the snake. do whatever it takes to head off an iranian bomb. a position that puts him on the same side as archenemy israel. >> lots of things understood in private and may have been not even talked about explicitly suddenly are out there in the cold light of day and it's going to make some governments and individuals uncomfortable. >> another reveals the u.s. has been negotiating with pakistan to remove enriched uranium so it doesn't fall in terrorist handings. now it's no longer a secret it seems less likely the deal could ever go through. and the revelation that american diplomats have been instructed to collect things like credit card and frequent flyer numbers, even dna samples are bound to make foreign officials much more cautious and suspicious in dealing with the state department.
7:04 am
>> david martin, thanks. joining us from grand rapids is republican congressman pete hoekstra of the house intelligence committee. good morning. >> good morning. >> so many revelations in this latest batch of wikileaks revelations. the one that strikes me most pointedly is this negotiation with the pakistanis to get a hold of this spent nuclear fuel to make sure it doesn't get in the hands of terrorists. such a sensitive issue for the pakistanis. this is a real potential time bomb. >> i think there's a number of time bombs in here. what you're seeing is a range of information getting into the public due main that was never intended to be there. some of it is gossip, some is about the political sausage of getting to a deal. and then the situation that you're describing really is very, very sensitive negotiations between the u.s. and one of our allies, dealing with nuclear weapons and nuclear

proliferation. >> is there anything in this from what you've seen thus far, that is potentially catastrophic in terms of the damage it can do? >> well, i haven't seen it in any of the tactical information about the negotiations or discussions on any single point. i think the catastrophic issue here is a breakdown in trust. there's a lot of countries that are going to be out there that are going to see stuff they never thought was going to be public. it's now in the public due main, on the front page, all over tv, the internet. they are going to wonder can the u.s. be trusted, can the united states keep a secret. >> there's always been sort of a murky relationship between the state department and the cia. but we have in this one memo the state department basically asking diplomats to spy on members of the u.n. delegations. >> again, a very, very awkward
7:06 am
position i would think for diplomats to be put in. i know that in our work with the intelligence community, even being on the cia -- on the intelligence committee, the cia has never really asked us to spy on the people that we've been meeting with or those kinds of things because they recognize that it may compromise our position as being a congressman. i think it does the same thing for diplomats. it compromises or potentially compromises their position and their relationship with the people that they work with. >> i guess the other part is to close things off, this many documents of this nature could be so easily uncovered, is sort of in its own level stunning. >> a massive failure within the intelligence community to create this kind of a data base with this much information in it, and then provide access to hundreds of thousands of people across the government. i think the surprising thing is that it never happened before.
