captioned by becky lyon." after more than a week lost in the wet, cold wilderness a bay area hiker was found alive. they were spotted off an unmarked trail in false creek state park in santa cruz this morning. they are neighbors. based on a psychics tip they went looking for her at the park today and found her about 2 miles in. collins was suffering from hyopthermia but was smiling when rescuers arrived. a 9-year-old girl shot after answering a knock on the door is recovering tonight. witnesses say the suspect fired about 10 rounds through the front door. it happened around 10:30 p.m. last night along brighton street in hercules. don knapp says police have been to the home before. don? >> reporter: that's right, ann. some neighbors have said and police confirm there have been incidents at that particular home before. but did those incidents culminate in the shooting of a child last night? police can't yet say. >> reporter: it happened here

in the 100 block of brighton street. modern homes and nicely landscaped yards. about 10:30 p.m. last night a 9-year-old girl answers a knock on the door and when she opens it she is shot in the neck and back by a gunman who continues to fire nine or ten more shots into the house. >> he was immediately transported to children's hospital in oakland where at that time she was in critical but stable condition. >> reporter: no one else was struck. the suspect fled on foot. did someone actually target a family member? police will only say -- >> the information we received, we are confident this was a target. >> the police department has been out there after the last several months on different types of calls. at this point the details on

those calls i don't have. >> reporter: matthews says they have leads and police are following them. >> police officers did interview the residents and those that were in the home at the time of the shooting and the neighborhood as well, canvassed the neighborhood. they do have some substantial leads that they are working on and they are hoping to make an arrest. >> reporter: we did talk with a couple of neighbors in the neighborhood this evening who declined to appear on camera but one woman said this is a great neighborhood. the people here love one another and she was very happy to hear the child will survive. another man told us that he had just moved here to get away from the violence in oakland. ann? don knapp in hercules, thank you. a san jose marine killed the day before thanksgiving was laid to rest today. the funeral for 19-year-old lance corporal was held today.

he was killed during his combat deployment fewer than two months after arriving in afghanistan. the military has not said how he died. a marine sergeant from piedmont has been killed in afghanistan. 26-year-old matt abate died in combat on thursday. he grew up in piedmont and went to school there. his parents say he always dreamed of being a marine and turned one when he became 20. he was married and had a 2-year- old son. sentencing is two days away for three people who abused a tracy teen and kept him captive for more than a year. in 2008 kyle ramirez escaped and walked into a health club nearly naked with a chain around his ankle. michael and his wife and the legal guardian at the time all pleaded guilty to more than a dozen felonies and each faces at least 30 years in prison when they are sentenced on monday. cool and cloudy today. we did see some occasional

showers in the bay area today. meteorologist lawrence karnow says more rain is on the way. hey, lawrence? >> nothing like we are going to have tomorrow. and we have seen those scattered showers around the bay area. had a pretty good band that moved through parts of the south bay but we have got a stronger system off the coastline. high-def doppler picking up on some of the moisture right now. we are seeing scattered light showers showing up outside. so if you are headed out you might want to be prepared. you can see the cell moving on by. further to the south we have got some more widely scattered showers. hanging out over the mountain tops but the main band making its way over the central valley. but we are not done, folks. the main event really yet to come. it is sitting off the coastline and it will bring with it a pretty good punch. i believe especially as we head into tomorrow afternoon. we are going to see a whole lot of wind. some heavy rain coming our way it looks like by tomorrow afternoon. we will have more details coming up in just a few minutes. back to you, ann. >> great, lawrence. at this. a catastrophe.

that's what congressal leaders are calling the salmon industry. for the second season in a row salmon season has been canceled because of the lack in california waters. a summit is looking for solutions to near extinction of the salmons. >> reporter: all along california's coast and in its rivers the natural resource is drying up in part because water is being diverted from the delta for use all over the state and over fishing. >> you lose salmon and recreational fishery in northern california is gone. >> reporter: these guys are fisherman who came to the meeting in half moon bay where local congress members wanted to put pressure on the people in charge of our water and fisheries. >> i'm horrified and i think most californians will be horrified when they realize the salmon as a species is about to be obliterated. >> reporter: a 90% decrease in salmon's fall run leading to a federal disaster declaration

things settling down but still more off the coastline and more to come. main event will move offshore looks like later in the afternoon tomorrow. we will see the winds especially seeing them ramping up tomorrow. rain heavy at times especially afternoon and mountain snow is kind of a warm storm so we are talking about 7000 feet to begin with then the snow levels start to drop somewhat. temperatures outside right now mainly in the 50s at this hour. i think if you plan on traveling around the state tomorrow be careful. it will be pretty wet and that's coming in with lots of rain and gusty winds so high profile vehicle. got to be very careful. high country. snow level above the mountain peaks in the tahoe area. lots of snow monday and tuesday catching a break. storm system watch it dive to the south here and spin around. it is picking up some tropical moisture here and starting to make its way into the bay area. as it moves closer and closer overnight and tomorrow the winds will start to ramp up. it will be a blustery afternoon around the bay area by tomorrow. and looks like it will continue well into the evening. computer model picking up this
