>> wicked weather. a powerful blizzard pound the midwest, punching a hole in the roof of the minneapolis metrodome. thousands of travelers are grounded and the storm is now heading east. we'll bring you the latest. >> tax cut test. the senate takes a first vote today on the controversial compromise, carved out by president obama and republicans. but will democrats step in and sink the deal? we'll go live to capitol hill. and cruise ship nightmare. a royal caribbean ship with nearly 1,000 americans aboard is limping into port after being battered by high winds and heavy seas, making it the third crippled cruise in less than two months. we'll hear from passengers about their rough ride early this monday morning, december 13th, 2010.

all is calm, all is dry here in manhattan this morning. >> finally. >> good morning. i'm harry smith. >> i'm betty nguyen. >> we've had wild weather across much of the country. i don't know if you've seen this picture yet. if you weren't watching football yesterday you didn't see it. this is a picture taken late saturday night at the metrodome as the roof there gave way and the snow just came pouring in. they had almost hurricane force winds, more than a foot of snow fell. this was the result. and now that game that was to be played between the vikings and the giants has been moved to detroit. we'll have more on that in a little while. >> they are lucky that didn't happen during game time. can you imagine if the players were on the field. >> not a good thing. >> also the latest on the

elizabeth smart case. ed smart her father is with us this morning. they were in court on friday as brian david mitchell was convicted of kidnapping elizabeth, raping her and holding her captive for nine months. >> first, it is a miserable morning across much of the country. flooding in the northwest, driving rain in the northeast, and worst of all a blizzard in the midwest that is being blamed for at least four deaths. we've got team coverage of this stormy weather beginning with cbs news national correspondent dean reynoldsen south bend, indiana. >> good morning. the calendar may not say it but for the people of the midwest, believe me today is winter. as you can see, it's a very good idea to stay indoors. and not just because of the snow. 50-mile-per-hour winds are adding pain to the precipitation. on sunday, from the dakotas to indiana, some who did venture

out paid a price. while many who hoped to get away from it all were frustrated. >> i might not get out of here until tuesday. >> more than 1,000 flights were canceled at o'hare and midway airports sunday. so long were the anticipated delays that the airlines started passing out tooth paste and tooth brushes with tickets. close to two feet of snow burying wisconsin, the governor's declaration of an emergency was almost an anti-climax. >> what we plow as it drifts in five minutes later. >> everyone was urged to stay off the roads. some were closed. just to be on the safe side. >> stay home. do not come out in this. >> chicago put 174 plows on the pavement. and while tailgaters. >> this is bear weather. >> white-out conditions. >> after the bears lost 36-7 in new england, their enthusiasm probably cooled off. speaking of temperatures, they are of the single digit variety

now. and could stay that way well into this afternoon. of course, michigan and ohio can see all of this coming their way now. along with all of the ingredients for more lake-effect snow. and if so, then south bend, indiana where i am, very near lake michigan is going to get hit again. harry, i'm going to try not to take it personally. >> sorry about that, dean. dean reynolds, thanks so much from south bend, indiana right in the snow belt this morning. >> the people of minnesota are accustomed to cold weather and snow but even they were unprepared for the size and power of the blizzard that hit over the weekend. liz collin of our minneapolis station wcco-tv is there with the latest. liz, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, harry. some call this snowmageddon, others describe it as the mother of all storms. either way, everyone agrees it's been a long, long time since a winter storm this powerful hit the twin cities.

a monster snowstorm shocked minneapolis dumping 17 inches of snow in 18 hours bringing white-out conditions, closing roads and creating snow drifts five feet high. at one point it closed a 150-plus mile stretch of interstate 90. it was the fifth biggest snowfall in the city's history. workers tried to remove two feet of snow from the roof of the metrodome but captured in this dramatic video the stadium's 9 1/2 acre inflatable roof caved in and burst open. pouring snow onto the field. no one was injured. >> we had three roof panels rupture, providing for deflation of the roof. >> reporter: the collapse canceled sunday's game against the new york giants who were unable to get there because of the minneapolis airport was shut down for the first timen 19 years. the game will now be played on monday in detroit. with temperatures hovering in the single digits minnesotians are trying to keep up with one

of the biggest blizzards. >> i've been shoveling almost every hour on the hour. >> reporter: the last time the dome deflated due to snow was in 1983. back then it took four days to fix. now, originally we thought postponing the game would be good for vikings quarterback brett favre but we learned this morning in an interview it says that it looks unlikely he will play. of course he suffered a shouldier injury last week. that will likely end his incredible 297 consecutive nfl game start streak. >> thank you very much. got to get the metrodome ready for next week. lots to do there. thank you very much. >> for the third time in five weeks unlucky cruise ship passengers are finding their dream vacation has turned into a nightmare. a royal caribbean ship with 1,000 americans on board is limping to port after being damaged in a powerful storm.

mark phillips is in london with the latest. boy, some vacation. >> reporter: yes, betty. this is the latest in a series of dramas at sea. the cruise ship was in the mediterranean when it was caught in a ferocious winter storm. unpleasant experience for the passengers, many american, but luckily one they can still talk about. the storm pounded the eastern mediterranean with hurricane-force winds and 30-foot waves. it was bad enough on land but it was also devastating at sea. this is what happened to the royal caribbean cruise ship brilliance of the seas when it was caught in the storm. the ship rolled vie lenltsly throwing furniture, passengers, and the ship's christmas tree around. it was a frightening experience for those on board. >> everything is just flying. we're flying off the beds, the beds are moving, the tables are tumbling owe skrer our

television fell out. water is everywhere because of ice buckets, everything just flying. it goes about four times. >> reporter: the brilliance of the seas looked more brilliant in its publicity video. its 12-day cruise was supposed to take it from spain to italy, greece and egypt. it's now trying to head back toward malta. it's a bad month for cruising. the clearly with 88 americans was hit by a massive storm between south america and antarctica and had to limp back to port. the carnival splendor was stranded in the pacific off mexico when a fire in the engine room left the ship without power last month. luckily, nobody has been killed in these incidents. ship safety standards are pretty high but a cargo ship with 11 on board did sink off the israeli coast this morning in this latest storm. the crew were also lucky. rescued after they took to the life boats. betty. >> that's mark phillips in

london. thank you. earlier i spoke with lorraine brewer, a passenger on board the brillians of the seas. >> between 20 clock and 230 i woke up. it was very rough. then we had a little rougher. i remember my glasses fell. i reached down to pick them up and a huge lifting of the ship. i flew across the cabin to the door. i flew across. my husband grabbed me and we slammed into the plate glass sliding door. this went back and forth for probably maybe five minutes. we could see waves higher than the seventh floor balcony. >> you could see waves -- >> yeah. >> so you could see waves from

your seventh. somebody said they saw them up to the tenth. and you literally, the ship was literally listing from one side to the other and you were being tossed from one side of your stateroom to the other side? >> yes. tables flying. the bed was hitting the wall. we had totally turned around. everything that wasn't secured was all over. little flying missiles. >> wow. are you okay? did you get hurt? >> well, little things. people that i've seen that have lacerations that they had fixed and have bruising. we haven't been told of serious injuries. communication hasn't been. >> as lorraine brewer, a passenger on the ship in the mediterranean. i guest most everybody on thep ship is okay. >> time for the rest of the morning's top stories.

good morning. >> great to be with you. good morning. a tense hostage drama at a nursery school in france ended. the school is in the eastern part of the country. 17-year-old male armed with at least two swords had entered the building and took 20 children and their teacher hostage. he released 14 of the children before police entered the building and negotiated a safe end. the suspect's motive is unclear. he is said to suffer from depression. the senate is expected to take a test vote on the tax deal president obama agreed to with republicans. nancy is on capitol hill. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. assuming senators can get back from the snowy midwest today's vote will show whether democrats can accept this tax cut deal. appearing on cbs news's face the nation sunday, top white house adviser david axelrod predicted passage for the tax deal worked out between the obama

administration and congressional republicans. >> this is going to help our economy move. that's why all economists have said that this will put a real charge into the economy. >> reporter: the white house is expressing optimism even though the democratically controlled house refused to bring the measure up for a vote and independent senator from vermont bernie sanders spent 8 1/2 hours railing against it. >> it's "robin hood" in reverse. >> reporter: democrats who opposed provisions like reduction in the estate tax rate are getting sweeteners added. among the additions a tax credit for renewable energy and green jobs. tax relief for mass transit, a tax deduction for elementary and secondary school teachers, and tax benefits to land owners who set aside property for conservation. not all democrats are on board with the add-ons. >> we shouldn't add to the cost of the bill. it's already too big already. we were headed toward a $1.3

trillion deficit next year. add this on and we're up to a 1.75 or $1.8 trillion one-year deficit. >> reporter: even the most vocal critics say they won't scuttle the deal. >> we're not going to hold this up at the end of the day. >> reporter: now, this will not be a partyline vote today. there will be republicans who vote against it because they think it's too expensive. democrats who vote against it because they don't like some of the tax cuts for the wealthy but in the end it should get the 60 votes it needs to move forward. >> nancy for us on capitol hill. thank you. >> this morning swedish officials believe they know the identity of a suicide bomber who struck downtown stockholm. he detonated his device saturday. police say they are 98% sure he was a 28-year-old swede itch citizen. authorities say he was also registered as the owner of a car that exploded just before the suicide blast. diplomat richard holbrooke received phone calls from the

presidents of afghanistan and pakistan as he recovers from more surgery. president obama's special envoy had a procedure yesterday and followed an operation to repair an artery after he collapsed in the state department on friday. former alaska governor sarah palin spent the weekend in haiti to get a first hand look at conditions there. palin visited a cholera treatment clinic yesterday. more than 2,000 people have died from cholera there. she says that americans should get out of their comfort zone and volunteer to help. palin also visited some of the victims of the january earthquake and she called for a military air lift to bring supplies still needed in haiti. mark madoff's death is officially a suicide. the body of the son of ponzi schemer bernard madoff was found saturday. he hanged himself from the second anniversary of his father's arrest and america's largest financial fraud. did you hear about this. an out of bounds play by an nfl coach of the jets, he tripped miami's nolan carroll who was

running near the jets' bench to cover a punt. the jets coach apologized but could face punishment by the team. dave price joining us for our look at the weather. >> harry just tripped me. on my way over. did anybody see that play? did any one see that play? i don't know if we can get a replay. >> it's the bad news you're bringing. >> let's see what's happening. a lot to talk about. more lake effect activity. that's what's going on. let's go right to the radar picture. that will show a good indication of what we're seeing now, more of this wind coming out of the north-northwest at this point and this is strong stuff. it could bring some snowflakes as far down as kentucky, so we're going to continue to watch this. this event, 48 hours long, 5 to 10 inches today in this little most intense zone. but keep in mind over the next two days we could see upwards of a foot and a half to two feet of snow around buffalo.

by one of princess diana's favorite photographers. more on that and the student riot that nearly roughed up prince charles and camilla. the first on elizabeth smart. she and her family say that justice is done now that the man that held her captive and sexually abused her for nine months has been convicted of all charges. we'll talk to her father in a moment but first the trial that ended on friday. >> harry, been eight long years for the smart family. eight years since brian david mitchell broke into their home and kidnapped elizabeth at knife point. the jury deliberated five hours before declared mitchell guilty, a verdict likely to guarantee a life sentence. elizabeth smart's abductor brian david mitchell sits behind bars awaiting sentence in may. he'll likely face a life sentence. elizabeth says she is relieved

by the swift verdict. >> i hope that not only is this an example that justice can be served in america, but that it is possible to move on after something terrible has happened. i'm so thrilled with the verdict but not only that i'm so thrilled to stand before the people of america today and give hope to other victims who have not spoken out about what's happened to them. >> doesn't she glow? today's such a wonderful day. >> reporter: the month-long trial was a gut-wrenching ordeal. mitchell kicked out of court for loudly singing religious prayers. elizabeth and family members had to listen as the nooif months of captivity were retold. >> there is a way to put the people behind us and that we can move forward with our lives. >> reporter: at times, the trial was too much to bear. elizabeth stormed out of court early this month in the defense team's testimony. and she had to relive the abduction on the stand which she did with stoic bravery. >> i think the hardest part of

coming in here is worrying about elizabeth having to testify and as a father i was so grateful for her to be able to say what she had to say and put that behind her. >> reporter: elizabeth will travel to france to complete a mormon church mission and then return to college in utah for a music degree. her message now is one of vindicati vindication. >> we can speak out and we'll be heard. >> mitchell's defense attorneys did not decide whether to appeal. his sentencing is set for may 25th. harry? >> whit, thank you. joining us now is elizabeth's father, it smart. ed, good morning. >> good morning. >> want to go back to the last couple of weeks and what it was like for you and louis and the rest of your family. sitting in that courtroom and hearing what your daughter had to say because she had to testify in some detail about what she had to endure at the hands of this horrible man. what was that like for you all?

>> you know, i think that prior to her testimony, she had been brought in by the prosecutors to, you know, go over things and she called me one night, one day and she said, dad, you know, what i'm having to say is so much more than what i've ever said before. and -- >> what she had prior told you? >> what she had ever told me. we knew that it was horrible but to hear it in court it was, you know, it was outrageous but she, you know, i don't know how she had the dignity, the grace to be able to say it in the manner that she said, but the thing that was so important was there had to be absolutely no question that brian mitchell was what he was. >> i think everybody was terribly impressed by her poise, my her composure, by her maturity. does it feel now, there's still

a sentencing phase to come and i know she wants to face him in court. >> absolutely. >> does it feel like this journey is coming to its maybe perhaps logical end? >> it really did. i mean, when we went in on friday and heard that he was guilty on both counts, it was just kind of like, this is what we've been waiting for for eight years. and justice took a long time. the prosecutors were amazing and we're so grateful. you know, when elizabeth came home, we wanted her to know that this was not her fault. >> right. >> and i think so many victims get somehow brought into feeling like they have some ownership in what's happened to hem. >> some responsibility. >> absolutely. and i think that was one thing that elizabeth has absolutely come, you know, this was not her fault. it was brian mitchell. and in facing him in court, in telling the jury and telling

shoppers have already made it through black friday and cyber monday but it doesn't stop there. today is green monday. one of the biggest online shopping days of the year and the busiest for the people who ship all of those purchases. early show consumer correspondent susan coppen has much more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, betty. >> how did the term come about? >> reporter: so green monday is one of the busiest online shopping days of the year. traditionally, it is the second monday in december. it's basically the trigger day. the day that most shoppers realize, you know what? i better do my christmas shopping today to make sure that those packages get there on time

for christmas. $1 billion, that's what we expect consumers to spend today alone, betty. >> my goodness. okay. so if everyone is shopping today online, i assume it's one of the busiest days for people like the place where you're at, those shippers there trying to get the boxes an gift it is people on time for christmas. >> reporter: right. so fed-ex says that this is the busiest shipping day for them. as you can imagine, a monster day for retailers. it is a monster day for shippers, as well. put it into perspective. fed-ex says it will handle 16 million packages today alone. that's a 12% increase over last year, betty. >> and i also understand coming this friday it's going to be free shipping day. we all love the term free. are all retailers participating in that? >> reporter: no. not all retailers. this is something that started a few years ago. every december 17th is now called free shipping day.

there are about a thousand retailers that are taking part this year. you can go to freeshippingday.com to find a list of those retailers but if you're going to use free shipping day, read the fine print. sometimes there's something in place like you have to spend $75 or more to get free shipping. so it doesn't necessarily mean that you buy a $2 item you get free shipping for it. read the fine print. >> absolutely. sometimes there's a catch. but you know, a lot of people really focus right now on making sure that they get that gift there not only on time but in one piece. what are the deadlines and the dos and don'ts? >> reporter: so the deadlines, two thirds of retailers saying that standard shipping will expire on or before december 18th. so that is saturday. so you have until saturday in most cases to qualify for that standard shipping. but all is not lost if you don't get the packages out by

ovarian cancers by 11%. why so low? >> and called by the american cancer society a modest reduction in risk from dying of ovarian cancer. the reason is that they are not accepted screening tests per se. all we have. we're talking about specifically a physician exam, pelvic exam by a gynecologist, a pell vic ultrasound and usually most people heard of a blood test known as a ca-125. not 1 harry smith% accurate. not even close. they can give a normal result when there is cancer and abnorming when there is not. with that blood test, there are actually six other blood test markers that women should get and they should ask their doctors for if there is a is suspicion for ovarian cancer. most doctors even are not aware's those other markers. they should ask for them. >> the key is finding it, detecting it, but it's difficult

to detect, correct? >> exactly. because are where the ovaries sit. they present vague symptoms. a lot of them can be missed by the patients and the doctors. the big things we think about when we think of warning signs, pelvic pain or pressure is biggest. indigestion, a change in the way you eat. take a bite of food. push it away saying you feel full. stomach bloating, burping and changing in your urinary habits. frequency of urination or urgency to urinate more often. if you have those symptoms more than two weeks and talk to your doctor and ask to be examined by a gynecologist. >> for other women, how do you know if you're at risks? >> generally the rick for all women is 1 in 70. goes up as we age. over the age of 55, nerve her a baby, a history of ovarian or breast cancer, or colon or uterine cancers in their family.
