much of the bay area... the worst part of the storm that started yesterday has moved the heavy rain has given away to shower and even misty drizzle in much of the bay area. we are not out of the woods yet although most of the storm has moved on. let's go to our meteorologist in the weather center. >> still fog and rain out there tonight and more on the way. heavy at times with some isolated thunderstorms and potential hail through the wee hours of the morning. winds picking up as well. gusty at times. 20 to 30 and in the mountains winter storm warnings are up with lots of snow expected there. let's take a quick look at our live high-definition doppler. scattered activity around the bay all day as the pineapple connection diverted to the south overnight and is taken most of the rain across southern california. we will take a look at it and see what it means for the rest of the weekend coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, jim. >> you bet. despite a bit of a break in the rain today there were lots

of storm related problems. electricitied was knocked out. flights are delayed and mark sayer shows us it was a perilous day on the road. >> reporter: it has been a day of dangerous driving conditions across the summit on highway 17 with heavy fog and rain all day long. some drivers were just taking it too fast. >> slow down for us. take a little more time driving out there. chp officer was among the investigators at the grananite. the driver was not hurt. the chp officer saying there is little room for error. >> try not to be distracted by your cell phone and stuff going on in the car.

[ no audio ] >> that's what happened since last year. >> rose says he will be getting up in the middle of the night, and will check the water levels. he is hoping it will be a bit less than anticipated. >> we get worried because three or four feet will float that trailer line. >> reporter: manny is not taking any chances. heavy rains mean portions of his home can flood so he is stocking up on sandbags before it is too late. >> every year we get a lot of water that comes down the hill and if we divert it from the driveway it prevents it from coming into the garage and also our neighbor's yard so we try to diverge it so it goes out the storm drains. >> in terms of driving conditions the chp says it is also a good idea to check your tire treads and tire pressure. on the summit on the 17 i'm mark sayer, cbs5. a winter storm in the

sierra this weekend. a winter storm warning is in effect above 5000 feet and areas above 7000 feet could see 6 to 8 feet of snow. if you plan to drive up there be sure to bring your chains. the lights are back on on the peninsula. two separate outages locked out power to more than 1500 pg&e customers. more than 1100 went without power for 8.5 hours overnight and in belmont 400 customers lost power. rain related delays at bay area airports today. backups at sfo last week lasted three hours. no major delays in oakland. more people are traveling this holiday season. aaa says more than a million and a half californians will be driving and that's up 3% over last year. traveling is also up nationally.

92 million people will be on the move for the holidays. well, a huge celebration in the bay area's gay community tonight. the u.s. senate has voted to overturn the military's don't ask, don't tell policy. talking to one retired military member who had a personal stake in the outcome. >> the house resolution 27965 is adopted. [ cheers and applause >> reporter: an emotional reaction as gay and lesbian activists watched the senate's historic vote to repeal "don't ask, don't tell." >> after 18 years of working on this i witnessed the end to this policy. these are tears of joy. >> reporter: at the center of the celebration zoe dunning. dunning has been leading the fight to overturn the resume and allow gay -- overturn the law. >> we have slowly step by step,

two steps forward, one step back, but we did it. >> reporter: dunning retired three years ago but she fought the policy when it first came out in 1993 and won. she was allowed to stay in the navy while openly gay. on the streets here in the castro district news of the repealed law spread quickly by word of mouth and by technology. >> i woke up and i got online and was blown away by all the tweets and messages that this went down. people are moved to tears about it. >> reporter: eugene and steven came down to the castro to celebrate the vote. >> i think it is really for family encouraging anytime the political process can make justice happen and it is just very exciting now to feel like inclusion and justice has taken a step forward. >> reporter: opponents of the repealed law estimate there are 65,000 gay, lesbian, bisexual

and transgender serving in the military. >> there are still steps to take before the ban is lifted and it could take up to a year to implement. in san francisco tonight the traditional mexican celebration which commemorates mary and joseph finding no room at the inn was compared to another bill that went down in defeat in the senate. the dream act would have given thousands of illegal immigrants brought to the united states as children a path to citizenship if they went to college or joined the military. we will have reaction to the death of the dream act tonight at 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. a nevada teenager has been sentenced to two years in juvenile hall for causing a deadly crash. the 16-year-old driver was drinking and speeding when he lost control of his bmw and hit a semitruck. one of his

passengers died. three others were injured. critics at san francisco's sit, lie law aren't taking it sitting down. today, they knelt and settle on buckets protesting the voter approved proposition that went into effect yesterday. makes it illegal to sit or lie on public sidewalks from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. police will not enforce the law though until after department training. and google is still in a legal tug of war over information it collected while taking photographs for its street view mapping project. conneticut's attorney general wants to review the data inadvertently. a 5 p.m. deadline passed yesterday. the attorney general will now consider legal action. well, ask any child of the 60s especially here in the bay area and they know the name

a group called dance 10 agreed to perform to raise money for the street. kids in oakland got an early christmas spree today. a shopping spree. they filed in this morning with a $75 gift card in hand. each was nominated by someone including teachers, principals, their coach maybe. councilwoman brooks and aaron goodwin sponsored the gift card. >> there are so many unfortunate people going on in this economy. we are trying to allow everyone to enjoy christmas. >> don't have money to buy stuff. giving stuff away to the people who really need stuff. >> the shopping spree wrapped up at noon. santa's harley riding helpers made a special delivery

leave three former warriors with jim is with us here. >> a break in the rain. the deluge. much advertised. moved off to the south. more to come tonight and on and off through the week. we will see some pauses in the rain shower activity. right now we are looking at light rain around the bay. bit of fog lurking out of there as well. that's going to pick up through the overnight hours with the periods of moderate to heavy rain expected. even some isolated storm activity possible here through

the wee hours of the morning. but as you can see scattered radar returns now throughout the bay area. most of the activities has been in the north bay today and well to our south as that pineapple connection i spoke of kind of split apart today and started to sag to the south. the state radar shows the picture here. san luis ipisbo is where they got the most of the storm. cold air to the north. centered around this center of circulation right here. and the subtropical connection here which is moving to our south. so here is the cold air, here is the warm air. by wednesday the two are expected to come together across the bay area. between now and then showers on and off much like we saw today. we are expecting another surge of moisture which will bring moderate precipitation into the region but that should wind down through tomorrow morning

leaving us with scatter showers through the afternoon. for tonight, increasing wind and gusting winds across the area. 20 to 30-mile-an-hour winds. high country, they are looking at 100-mile-an-hour winds tonight at ridge top levels. serious winter weather for the high country, the sierra. rain potential through the week. most going by to our north and south through mid-week at least. the moisture is expected to creep back to the north bringing with it more rain and i'm sure in the form of moderate precipitation for most locations which we will see on and off through the early morning hours tomorrow before this system winds down. this whole pattern is basically stationary off the west coast. things are driving out. the stationary nature of this system won't change much. we will stay in the mid to low 50s and overnight we are looking for rainfall amounts in the 1 to 3 inches range for the mountains. half an inch to an inch across

the urban areas. could be some ponding on the roads and some stream flooding but the rivers look okay at this point. and not looking for any flooding in the major river systems here. as mentioned we will look to those temperatures to hover in the mid to upper 50s once again for tomorrow. not much change expected through the week and as we get a look at our seven-day forecast here you see we are keeping a chance of showers in the picture basically every day but it turns to showers monday and tuesday. another round of rain moving up from the south on wednesday and it even takes us into christmas day with rain on and off for the next seven days. so plan accordingly because that's your forecast update for now. right now here's kim with sports. >> thanks, jim. two nba trades leave three former warriors with a new address. an butler proves to sanford that last year's title run wasn't a fluke. sports is next. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

broncos rookie quarterback and former heisman quarterback tim tebow will make his first career start tomorrow against the raiders. >> fans want to see tim tebow. everybody in america loves tim tebow. so, i mean, everyone wants to see him play. it is a good thing. >> it is very nice to have that support and have people that are cheering for you and that want to see you play and that makes you feel very good and so, you know, anytime i can get an opportunity to play i love that because i'm a competitive player but also it is nice to have that support. raiders side. darren mcfadden needs just seven more yards rushing to reach 1000 for the first time in his career. quite an accomplishment for a guy who didn't even have 1000 yards combined in his first two seasons with the raiders. and no one has enjoyed watching him run more than quarterback jason campbell. >> anytime you've got to run, you always feel confident because you know the quarterback is going to make great plays for you. if the passing game isn't there, you get the ball to him,
