and good morning. it is christmas eve. a magical day for many as the holiday season reaches its peak. a getaway day for people. i'm russ mitchell. >> i'm rebecca jarvis. people are going away this week, traveling that 92 million people overall traveling but there you see chicago o'hare international airport where 2 million people are expected to be going through that airport today. can be a hectic time for people traveling. we'll get you live updates from o'hare to know what you need to know. >> at o'hare this morning, probably think 92 million people there. >> going through security with you. first, hawaii with breaking news. a security scare for the secret service agents protecting president obama and his family on their christmas vacation. one point, they had to draw their weapons cbs news chief white house correspondent chip

reid is in waikiki beach, honolulu, with the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: there were some tense moments for officers near the president's vacation home but no time was the president in any danger. these dramatic images show a law enforcement agent reportedly secret service targeting a man in a silver pickup truck. it was -- down a dead end street leading to a checkpoint. just after 2:00 p.m., police tried to arrest leon rodriguez and took off leading police first west across the island and then directly back in the opposite direction. the president was golfing with friends at the time and was never in any danger. the chase ended here on property owned by a native hawaiian sovereignty group. >> saw a silver truck flying in the village and a few seconds later a whole bunch of police

chasing him. >> reporter: a short time later, rodriguez was tasered and taken in. he looked amused in booking even though facing multiple charges. again, secret service says the man arrested in this incident was not trying to get near the president and unfortunate coincidence it happened near the neighborhood where the president is staying. russ? >> chip reid with the president in honolulu, thank you. and now here's rebecca. >> this morning, the christmas travel rush is in high gear. aaa predicts this year more americans on the move compared to last year and cbs news national correspondent dean reynolds is at chicago's o'hare airport where millions will be holidays. good morning, dean. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. it appears the millions of americans on the move experiencing largely trouble free trips. at airports across the country, the delays are down and the mood is up. >> well, so far, looks pretty light so i'm pretty happy about it.

>> reporter: in chicago, close to 2 million passengers are expected to pass through o'hare and midway airports during the holiday period. delta airlines said it will allow customers in six cities to rebook their flights for no charge if winter weather disrupts their plans and overnight wintry weather hitting iowa and other american states but the snow is more typical than terrible. in new orleans, hotel and restaurant operators rejoicing because of increased holiday tourist traffic drawn largely discounted rooms and fixed price menus. business up 25% at some restaurants this month. >> typically slow for december so we're all pleasantly surprised. >> reporter: like other high travel seasons, most people will be on the road despite $3 a gallon gas up 40 cents from a year ago. and now that trip back from christmas could be sticky, especially along the east coast where forecasters are predicting

a big storm to be taking shape possibly by sunday. rebecca? >> i'm sure we'll have everyone covered on the way back, as well. dean reynolds at o'hare, thank you. here's russ. as we hit the road for christmas, police and anti-terror forces watching us closely. you recall last christmas the so-called underwear bomber tried to blow up a plane headed to detroit. this morning, the tsa with a warning of a new type of security threat. cbs news homeland security correspondent bob orr in washington with the latest on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. officials are openly nervous this year about a perform attack over the coming holidays. the primary fear is that terrorists could once again try to smuggle explosives aboard airplanes. with christmas a day away, the transportation security administration is stepping up the hunt for bombs, ordering its officers to check insulated drink containers for hidden explosives. sources say there's no intelligence suggesting an imminent plot involving thermos

bombs but a statement on the tsa web site warns, quote, the possible tactics terrorists might use include explosives in insulated beverage containers. it's been a year of foiled plots and close calls. a car bomb fizzled in times square. two computer printers disarmed at cargo hubs in great britain and dubai. this week, anti-terror police in london took down a radical cell thought to be mapping a bombing campaign there and in two months, fbi busted home grown cells. still, persistent threats on jihadi websites make it clear terrorists are plotting more strikes. >> we'll do our best to disrupt the plots and plans before they make it to the homeland. >> reporter: al qaeda did not historically target western holidays and seemed to change a year ago. an underwear bomb was aboard flight 253 on christmas day.

that attack was carried out by al qaeda in the arabian peninsula, the same yemen-based group behind the cargo plot of the fall. at the center is the american-born cleric that inspired the ft. hood gunman. now, intelligence analysts worry the message could move more home grown radicals in the u.s. to take action in al qaeda's name. >> they never intended to conduct every attack themselves. they intended to spark a wave of people worldwide to do it for them. >> reporter: officials say u.s. defenses bolstered at airports and even train stations. and relentless drone strikes in pakistan have weakened bin laden's core group but the danger is not eliminated. >> so we need to be on top of our game, particularly during the holiday season but throughout the year. >> reporter: now, officials say they have improved significantly the information sharing and readiness this year overall better than a year ago. the problem, though, the threat is also up. russ? >> all right. bob orr in washington, thank you

very much. how safe are we? in d.c. steven emerson, executive director of project on terrorism. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> bob just touched on this but what do you think? are we safer than we were a year ago? >> it is hard to really say. i would say we look back at the past year, the fbi really batted almost a thousand except for the fact that several plots like the air cassgo plot fizzled out on their own but we have seen almost a doubling of would be attacks and half of them by converts to islam and those who converted to islam convert to a radical lam. there's much more activity in the united states because the jihadists have passports or green cards and i would say the threat is greater today. as far as the capabilities, they're also growing. vis-a-vis the warning this morning or yesterday that was given out by tsa.

trying to adapt to the last word. that's the problem we face. >> has our response changed an awful lot since this time last year? >> i think so. i think there's much more v visibility of the u.s. security at transportation venues and hubs. number two, there's much more detailed connections being made outside of the united states when someone tries to apply for a visa. that was the mistake made last year when ab dull almost detonated a bomb over detroit. >> the next 12 months, what could be the biggest challenges in fighting terrorism? >> well, one, you know, the home grown islamic terrorist is a major problem and growing and in that category the number of conversions from people who are not muslim, latino or white women, groan exponentially. number two, the websites as noted by the correspondent is

growing in popularity. and they are basically converting new converts to radical islam and willing t?t> steve, very quickly, any advice for americans traveling over the holiday season? >> traditionally, people say look for something suspicious. obviously, there's a limit to what you can do but you have to be very aware of your surroundings and number two, be sure to inform security officials if there is something suspicious you notice because it's better to be safe than sorry. >> all right. steve emerson from d.c. thank you for joining us. happy holidays. >> you bet. let's get more news now. betty nguyen at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning. there's a settlement in the crash that led to the recall of millions of toyotas. they have agreed to pay the family of the four victims $10 million. they died last year when their lexus crashed after the accelerator pedal was stuck. toyota admits no liability in

the settlement. safety officials are investigating as many as 89 similar deaths since 2000. this morning, there are fears of a major avalanche in the mountains of southern nevada. overnight, at least three snow slides hit mountain areas 40 miles northwest of los angeles. police going door to door urging residents to evacuate. heavy snow knocked down power lines three days ago. electricity is cut to more than 300 customers and in lower elevations heavy rains produced flooding. nine california counties are under an official state of emergency as officials assess the damage from a string of powerful storms. cbs news correspondent terry mccarthy in hard-hit highland, california, with the latest. good morning, terry. >> reporter: going to be more of a muddy than a merry christmas here in highland, california, where local residents spending most of their holidays not celebrating but digging themselves out from all of this mud. in the city of highland, it is the nightmare before christmas.

an entire neighborhood, hundreds of homes buried in three feet of mud after a flood of water came roaring through. lewis has a trench where he used to have a front yard. >> happened in minutes. only time to wake up the neighbor, get her to safe ground and that was it. i couldn't get the vehicles, nothing out. >> reporter: here in san bernardino county, it destroyed homes, roads and bridges. one woman died wednesday when her car plunged off of a flooding road into a lake. more than 80 people had to be rescued. >> it was a matter of seblgds before the water was by the door, opening the doors. you couldn't get the doors open. >> reporter: experts estimate the damage in two counties east of los angeles top $40 million. this family lost their home of 37 years and they have no flood insurance. >> we built the house and paid it off. and my husband's worked all his life. >> reporter: laguna beach store owners cleaned around the clock hoping to catch last-minute

christmas shoppers. the storm seems to be losing strength moving east. but high winds damaged parts of phoenix. >> total loss. >> reporter: for those hardest hit, may take weeks to get back to normal. >> we can replace it. we have a lot of family, a lot of help. this whole community works together so we can all help each other rebuild. >> reporter: the ground around here is starting to dry out and crews have been working 24/7 to clear away all this mess but the worst may not yet be over. on christmas day, mother nature has a special present for us, another rainstorm headed to california. terry mccarthy, cbs news, highland, california. in britain, a flap about a commemorative coin with portraits of prince william and kate middleton. the supposed life like portraits aren't exactly life like. bride to be appears somewhat plump in the face and the portrait of william isn't accurate, either. the couple plans to marry on

flagship store here in manhattan. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. at retailers across the country, the last-minute shopping in full swing. here at macy's in new york, open 24 hours since tuesday to accommodate the shoppers. with just hours to go until christmas -- >> oh, wow. oh my gosh. they have been very busy. you can't go in and just lines everywhere. >> reporter: the shopping frenzy is at a fever pitch. >> anything. i'll take anything. >> reporter: consumers appear to be getting back in the holiday spirit. >> merry christmas. >> reporter: last super saturday weekend retail sales increased 5.5% compared to a year ago. foot traffic up 3% and online sales jumped a whopping 17%. >> we are feeling better about our economy and one of the ways to express that is i'm a shopper and i'm back and i'm ready to

spend. >> reporter: business is so good the national retail federation revised the holiday sales forecast from 2.3% to 3.3%, with consumers heading back to traditional holiday gifts like electronics, jewelry and clothes. apparel sales are up almost 10% over last year as a sign consumers are spending money on themselves. did you get anything for yourself? >> of course. >> reporter: what did you zbhet. >> a sweater for myself, too. >> reporter: yeah. the discounts that are available are not quite as deep as in past years. experts say retail earls this year have done a better job basically of keeping a handle on inventory and that means fewer fire sales because those, rebecca, can eat into profits. >> good for them. not so good for us. cbs' elaine quijano, thank you. >> they're doing it last minute. >> that is true. as i will later on today.

happy christmas eve. it is 7:25. i'm robert lyles. time for news headlines. the fbi will help investigate a sewage spill in marin county. sabotage is suspected in the overflow into corte madera creek at kentfield. a large pipe was clogged by tons of debris that would not normally get into the system. as much as three million gallons of sewage spilled into the creek. police officers all over california go on special patrols to stop drunk drives this weekend. the chp will have what it calls its christmas maximum enforcement period which goes through tonight and clears through sunday. last year, they made more than 1100dui arrests during the same

performance on broadway's most expensive show ever, the lights went up again on "spider-man: turn off the dark." >> you are at the edge of your seat. >> reporter: any point in time are you nervous? >> little bit. >> yeah. but they -- i mean, no accidents during the show. they did a great job. >> reporter: christopher tierney's 30-foot plunge monday night that sparked an investigation and brought to light three other injuries on the production. producers of the $65 million musical have now allowed to implement new safety measures. lawmakers say it's about time. >> it's workplace safety is nothing something achieved by process of trial and error. >> reporter: among the upgrades, extra stage hands to check harnesses before every stunt. extra pads placed on stage and more tethering for cable harnesses like the one that failed and independent safety expert has also been brought on board. >> they were never confident,

never secure backstage. >> reporter: theater columnist who's been critical of the production says the stakes were especially high thursday night. >> i got a sense watching the cast members, they were relieved. you could see them hugging each other in the curtain call and a palpable sense we got through the show without an injury and now maybe going forward. >> reporter: is there a sense of relief? >> sense of relief, sense of rising to the occasion. no glitches. more safety measures. much safer show thankfully. >> reporter: the pressure won't let up. critics say another mishap could bring the curtain down for good. michelle miller, cbs news, new york. >> and joining us now is brian smie, a stuntman and coordinator more than 20 years. >> how are you doing? >> just fine. what do you think is going on over there? >> i think there's -- needs a little more in-house overseeing, a manager, stunt coordinator there all the time overseeing everything constantly. >> are these types of stunts

that they're doing on the show, unprecedented on broadway. >> they are on broadway but not the movie industry and things that should be happening. i think pushing things faster for the show to get it open, moving. and instead of testing, probably testing until they got it right instead of testing until they got it right every time. >> how dangerous is it for the actors? >> it's pretty dangerous. if you lose a line and some wenches move you at 40 feet a second and like being in a car accident. like being hit by a car. >> the show was shut down while they worked everything out. based on your experience after two days how optimistic are you they have worked everything out? >> not very. >> what do you do? >> bring in the experts, the big guns with the knowledge to do this all the time. rigging guys all the time. might be a different perspective of guy that is set it up to evaluate what they did to step

away from it for a different view. >> again, from your experience, based on what's happened over there thus far, do you think the show can go on? >> it can. i really think that they need to be careful because the city's talking about pulling the plug. if you got 65 million in, you might want the best people possible in to review everything. >> $65 million production, most expensive production in broadway histo history. what are the fellow coordinators saying about the show? >> they see what's going on. the show is pushed. it's a budget tear thing and stunt coordinator. to work with the company, it's a business at the end of the day. you have to make it work. >> brian, i understand you were going to be originally a part of the production. >> i don't really get involved with live productions. features, you get to work the bugs out a little bit more. and you're not stuck there with a live audience. this originally went on with

officers at that checkpoint but the secret service says at no time was the president in any danger, and leon rodrigues seemed to enjoy the attention he was getting booked by police here in hawaii. rodriguez took a wrong turn trying to evade arrest on outstanding traffic violations and con techt of court. a very bad move, near the neighborhood where the president is staying. photographers captured a law enforcement officer reportedly a secret service agent sprinting towards his pickup truck and pointing a gun at the vehicle pap strit service spokesperson said rodrigues was not trying to get near the president or his family and got no closer than a security barricade on the outer perimeter of the president's neighborhood. police eventually arrested rodriguez after tasering him when he refused to get out of his pickup truck. during this incident, the president was playing golf. the president and his family were never in danger. any time there's an incident near the president when

vacationi vacationing, here in hawaii or anywhere else, there's plenty of fire power nearby. betty? >> no doubt. cbs's chip reid, thank you. this morning police in mumbai, india are searching for four suspected terrorist. they belong to the same pakistani based military organization that carried out the 2008 attack that killed 166 people. police say they are planning "a violent attack during the highway day season." it's homeland security department is warning airlines of a new security threat. the fear is that terrorists may try to smuggle explosives onboard airliners using insulated beverage containers like thermoses. they're particularly worried about a holiday attack, but there is nothing to suggest an attack is imminent. a daring art heist right here in new york city. thieves tunnelled through an apartment wall and made off with about $750,000 worth of art and jewelry, including works by andy warhol. police say it happened around thanksgiving while the owners were away.

allows all the acid from the stomach to be pushed up into the esophagus. if you've it h it it's painful. it gets your attention. >> counterintuitive that something relaxes and then the heartburn comes on. you also say food has major issues with heartburn, too. >> exactly. stress is a little factor. big food triggers that differ for everyone. the kind of common foods we're all facing in the holiday season. really it can range fra alcohol in the form of your cocktail to caffeine. whether it's coffee, tea or soda. coffee is a big trigger. spicy sauces, citrus foods, fatty foods, anything fried tends to irritate the problem. >> besides avoiding food triggers, what else can you do to keep it from happening? >> basic lifestyle things you can modify in your behavior, day to day can make a big difference. first, if you smoke, stop. it's not only bad for your

contributor katie lee is with us. great to see you. >> great to see you, too. definite smell -- doesn't it smell amazing in here? >> you walk in the studio, cinnamon rolls smack you in the face. >> so great. this is a great meal to make for your christmas morning, because you don't have to be in the kitchen. i say if i'm making pancakes or scrambling eggs i'm a short order cook. all things can you do in advance. we start way fruit salad. my mom makes this. it's delicious. we all eat it up. grapefruit segments and orange segments. citrus is in season, dump in the pomegranate seeds, also in season. i have kiwi. nice colors of christmas, and for sweetness, we have some coconut flakes, put in a little bit of marshmallows and chopped walnuts. this is actually pretty healthy, because i'm not adding any sugar to it. give it a stir. and can you naught in the refrigerator tonight and tomorrow morning all of it, the juices, come together and it

will be so yummy and delicious. it looks really festive. also great for dessert, if you want a healthy dessert option. >> just like that, you're done. >> you're done. how easy was in? >> okay. >> cinnamon rolls. >> cinnamon rolls, what we've all been waiting for. i made a yeast dough. this is a foolproof yeast dough. the recipe son the website. i want to point out with the yeast you want it to look bubbly and thick. you put it in warm water. a little sugar for the yeast to feed off. if it doesn't look like this, start over, that means your yeast isn't doing so well. i've let it rise and am rolling it out. nice dough here. i'm going to ask you to brush some of that butter on there. we're going to put melted butter all over it. >> all over. right? >> get it all in there. >> we like that. >> be very generous with the butter. >> no problem at all. >> mix cinnamon and sugar, and need a lot of this. you want a lot of cinnamon. >> yes. >> so keep going with that and i'm going to sprinkle. put some more on that.

headlines... police in the sout it is 8:55. good morning, everyone. i'm sydnie kohara with your cbs 5 news headlines. police in the south bay looking for a man behind a crime spree at a mall. they say he had a rifle hidden in his trench coat, terrorized shoppers and robbed a store at the westfield valley fair mall yesterday in santa clara. he was last seen driving a stolen nissan altima after a carjacking. a third man has died following a drive-by shooting in south san francisco. this happened wednesday night at the corner of linden avenue and 8th lane. neighbors say they heard several gunshots then found the victims in the street. investigators are looking into possible gang links. and it looks as if san francisco will continue to be the home of the 49ers at least for a few more years. a tentative agreement struck yesterday would keep them

good morning. we have not had much of a morning commute at all today. we're seeing one of our first problem spots out there,
