but the celebrations are still joyous. and in walnut creek today, some even hit the slushy skating rink. good evening, and merry christmas. i'm ann notarangelo. and now, things are just starting to ease up in most areas tonight, but throughout the day, the christmas storm soaked the bay area. meteorologist lawrence karnow is here to tell us what parts are getting drenched right now. hi, lawrence. >> it was whipping around the bay area. we have some gusts, 40 and 50 mile-an-hour winds and yes, some heavy rains, still seeing some showers moving onshore but becoming more widely scattered as the main cold front has gone on by. and still, pocks of moderate to heavy amounts of rain in san francisco, north of san mateo and half moon bay. more rain headed in your direction. the south bay also seeing some scattered showers, but some lighter amounts toward san jose and heavier amounts over the santa cruz mountains and east bay, pockets of moderate amounts of rain. this is the way it plays out in the next 24 hours. more widely scattered showers and not the real strong band and we have a cell stretching

from napa to vallejo. and will is more rain to come and a cold storm on the horizon, maybe some snow in the bay area and talk about that coming up in a few minutes. ann, back to you. a soggy christmas day did not dampen the holiday mood across the bay area for the most part but as anne makovec shows tus did cause some concern in marin county where the cleanup from the sewage spill is not cleaned up yet. >> reporter: a pelting rainstorm soaked the bay area. but not the spirits. >> the weather is great right now, but take it for what it is. >> reporter: this mountain biker came out to check out the white-capped waves in the marin headlands. and holiday drivers splashed through wet roadways in a multi- county area where an urban small stream and flood watch was in effect for most of the afternoon. >> the creek stayed within its banks in marin county and a dozen contractors were out near the scene of a huge sewage

spill earlier this week, and watching to make sure there were no toxic creeks flowing. >> we are making sure people don't hit our pipes and tries to keep them up and running so the sewage system doesn't leak again. >> reporter: the emergency work on the ross valley system was finished last night but the temporary pipe system, and its watchdog will remain through the weekend. just in case. >> somebody's got to do it and i'm the guy doing it. >> and they're giving special treatment, neighbors dropping off holiday treats. >> people are really nice this this area. >> an attitude that keeps people warm, at least at heart. >> this commute is giving recognition to how beautiful the area is and how thankful we are for everything we have. >> reporter: another piece of good news. we were out here on 101, and watching the lucky drive exit, one of the bay area's most infamous flooding spots and it never got really bad. in marin county, anne makovec, cbs 5 eyewitness news. dozens of people in san

bernardino county were not able to spend christmas in their own homes. their houses in highland were destroyed last week when floodwaters and mud slides ripped through their neighborhood. crews are working to shore up the hillside so other homes are not in danger. and more than 300 firefighters are working on the cleanup effort and hope they will have everything cleaned out so people can return to their homes on monday. this christmas has special significance to one city on the peninsula. it was just three months ago when their community was shattered by a pipeline explosion. and grace lee tells us how they're moving beyond the tragedy this holiday. grace? >> we're standing on monterey drive and it looks like the average quiet neighborhood on christmas day and you can swing around here and see the fencing and beyond there is where the gas line exploded. talking to some families here today, they're definitely still feeling the effects this holiday season. >> on the outside of this home, it looks like just another

christmas. inside though, it has changed. this year, they have opened their house to neighbors who have lost their home in the san bruno fire on september 9th. >> they seem to be managing it pretty well, you know. given everything that has happened, we're having a pretty good time right now and everybody seems to be enjoying christmas and counting our blessings and what christmas is all about. >> it is actually hard every day. every day, you know that something is not right in the neighborhood. and in fact, i took my sister there today, and it is just devastating. every time you go by there, you relive it. >> that fire destroyed 37 houses and claimed eight lives. you might remember tammy, she saved 19-year-old joseph louie gomez's life, when the gas line exploded. she managed to save him, but his girlfriend jessica morales did not make it. >> we went and saw him, just actually a few days ago, my daughter and i took him to the hospital, and he looks great, he is really a miracle. >> do you feel like the two of

you will always have a connection? >> always. i think i will always consider him to be my kid. >> ted and mara say they have a lot to be thankful for, even though they have lost their home. all that remains on their lot, a shed, and a sliver of their fence. >> and in some ways, it makes me more afraid. because it is sort of like when somebody -- if somebody were to take the child next door, you never think something like that is going to happen to you and this is such a nice neighborhood. and so friendly. how many times have you forgotten to close the garage door at night. and nothing happens. and now, who knows what it is going to be like. >> reporter: the family has a long way to go. they don't even have an architect yet in order to rebuild the house and don't have a time line but despite all of that, and despite the rain out here today, a lot of joy in that household, and very, very nice family for inviting us in. >> you're absolutely right and a good reminder for awful us to be a reminder of what we do

have. a special christmas delivery at a bay area hospital today, not from santa claus himself but one of his little helpers. a a-year-old girl who is spreading holiday -- a 5-year- old girl who is spreading holiday cheer to other kids and she says it is in honor of her dad. >> it may not like santa's sleigh but inside this black suv are lots of toys and goodies for little girls and boys. it is not santa making this delivery. but a little 5-year-old kay lee hubbard of dixon. why, you ask? she says it is because of her daddy. >> where is he right mow? >> in afghanistan. >> does it make you sad that he is not here on christmas? >> yes. >> reporter: so she wanted to do something fun and since her father works in a hospital in afghanistan, she came up with the idea to -- >> take presents to the kids. >> reporter: at the children's hospital in oakland. >> because they might not get any presents for christmas. >> i could hardly answer her at first. i was really choked up. i am so proud of her. >> what do you think your daddy

would say? >> he would like it. >> reporter: in fact, haley's mom tonya tells us, when she told her husband of their christmas plans, it was difficult for him to talk. >> it is really touching. it is lard enough to be away from home, but it really touches him how sweet she is and how much she is handling it. >> reporter: but those who know her say -- >> this is really how she is every single day. just giving and loving. >> reporter: proving she has learned a valuable lesson this christmas. it is always better to give than to receive. >> she has really got a great heart. >> reporter: in dixon, melissa kabrel for cbs 5. the sweetest thing ever. a really nice girl. >> there are people out there that deal with it. >> the incredible christmas gift from someone they never met that brought a struggling couple to tears. truckloads of toys, how many last-minute donations poured in to help give bay area kids something from santa. a former marine, who's fighting

this christmas. michael herzenberger reports it is from a relative he has never even met. >> it is tough. it is tough. >> reporter: for john, and his wife candy in knoxville, tennessee, this is a christmas like no other. >> they took out a 3.2- centimeter tumor in my head right here. >> reporter: the former marine staff sergeant has stage four melanoma that spread to his brain. with medical bills piling up, he decided to raise money by raveling off his prized possession. the classic 1966 mustang he restored 25 years ago. john couldn't be at the drawing thursday because of chemotherapy but it raised close to $40,000 to help pay for treatment. a cousin by marriage, kaitlyn followed his progress on facebook, from her home in new jersey. >> i have never met them before but they're still family. >> she bought a raffle ticket to help him out. >> but i won. which i was so shocked. i had no idea. >> and it wasn't just kaitlyn's luck. it was john's as well.

without a thought, she gave the car right back to him. and she says it was the best christmas gift she has ever given. >> i knew when i bought the ticket there was no way i would ever keep it. how can you take something so sentimental away from someone who is going through everything that they're going through? everything they've gone through and everything they're going through. the sweetest thing ever. >> what a really nice girl. >> there are people out there that are just genuinely good people. >> and now they're planning a family reunion of sorts, they will meet for the very first time. in allentown, new jersey, michael herzenberg, for cbs news. san francisco's glide memorial church filled with the christmas spirit today. and the glad choir and congregation rocked silent night during the service and behind the scenes, more than 500 volunteers worked to prepare and service each with all of the trim cans of more than -- to feed more than 500 homeless and hungry folks. many volunteer every year and say it is what christmas is all about.

a marathon effort by san francisco firefighters and generous donors meant a great christmas for some of the city's neediest kids. and firefighters checked donations late into the night on christmas eve. and today, they arrived with bags of toys and gifts at shelters and dropoff points all over the city. and the gifts gave recently homeless families at the hamilton family center traditional housing program hope that they will be able to turn their lives around. >> i seriously thought about going and trying to panhandle to buy christmas presents this year, you know what i'm saying? it is nice to know that people care. >> you are helping folks and you see the smile on kid's faces. it is the best. >> on christmas eve the firefighters toy drive was short thousands of toys. they put out an appeal. and they collected toys until 1:00 this morning and they managed to collect 15,000 donations. enough to see them make lots of kids happy. the rain is still coming down in parts of the bay area.

did you have a good christmas? >> yes. >> what is your dog's name? >> sleeping beauty. >> you have had a tremendous day today? >> yes. >> can you say merry christmas. >> merry christmas. >> yeah. and it has been a great day. and it has been a great day to be with family and friends. this is one of those stormy days arn the bay area that you probably just want to stay inside. can we talk about the weather? we can always talk about the weather. >> you can stay with me. >> and we have a lot of clouds still around our skies right now and still seeing some showers but the main cold front has moved east into the central valley and seeing some heavier amounts of rain into the sacramento valley and pockets of moderate rain in the bay area and let's look at high def radar and a pretty good cell making its way across the peninsula, and into the central bay right now and headed eastward and you can see that, and san leandro, you're about to get some of that, and headed in your direction and watch out some of the cells, this key have some thunderstorms im bedded in them and brief periods of heavy amounts of rain and lightning strike and hail. so you get the idea. san jose, you've got moderate

amounts of rain also in that area but a little lighter than what we're seeing elsewhere. east bay, scattered showers as well and the north bay, seeing some heavier ams of rainfall in that direction -- amounts of rainfall in that direction. and that will continue to be the case throughout the evening hours. there is still more to come. there is a storm system that is moving through now. and behind it, there is a lot of cold air. so we will pack some more rain, and at least some more scattered showers in the forecast ahead. and in the meantime though, it looks like for the most part that the showers are tapering off just a bit outside. let's take a look at the latest satellite images and show you what i'm talking about. you can see the storm slamming into california, to the southern part of the state where they're seeing heavy rainfall down there as well. around the bay area, over an inch of rain in, san rafael, half of an inch in san francisco area. and tomorrow, a stormy day. lots of showers all around. the high country, be careful up there. and winter weather advisory in effect for tonight and expect another half a foot of snow. and so the storm system is moving on by now and behind it, a lot of cold air, that is going to slide on through and

bring with it more scattered showers throughout the night tonight and it looks like tomorrow, too. and there is more storms lining up after that. so this is how we're going to work things up on the computer model, picking it up around the area, 7:00, and bringing scattered showers tomorrow morning. they will be isolated around the bay area. not a washout like today. but we could see the showers on and off tomorrow and if you have things planned, make sure you bring the umbrella with you and a little unsettled and wet with. that in mind, more rain, and storms that are lining up off the coastline and it looks like we catch a break on monday and i think tuesday, another chance of showers. and overnight tuesday into wednesday, a cold storm dives into the bay area and temperatures are really going to take a hit and talking about low snow levels as we go through wednesday and thursday. that's a look at weather. here is gary with sports. >> all right, thanks, lawrence. it is all about christmas day hoops. the nba was front and center today. and the magic tried to make the celtics win streak go away. back in caly, the heat and lakers were all fired up. how is this for holiday cheer? elbows and players going flying

and great hustle. and knicks beat the bulls with the green elves suits, 103-95. and the raiders still have a shot at the post season. they have won seven games this year, the most they have won in a year in the past seven seasons but to stay alive they need to beat peyton manning and the colts yesterday. manning has not been the usual near perfect self this season. not his fault. injuries all season long for the offense have made it definitely difficult. manning has the colts on top. the raiders though, to beat indy, they know they have to avoid beating themselves. >> pretty much we don't get the penalties. you got to play football. and as long as we don't have like the raiders, with the raiders having problems with penalties and as long as we can just minimize them. you know what i'm saying? don't go into the game and get 12 penalties. we will kill ourselves. but the key is probably five. and i think we will be okay. >> only five sounds good.

all right. the nipers are 05 but believe it or not they are still in the -- the niners are still 5-9 but they are still in the race. and no way takeo spikes will sit this one out. the veteran linebacker broke his hand two weeks ago so he and patrick willis have the matching casts. look like clubs. pretty cool. spike something have the best season in years and in the 13- year career he has not played in the playoffs and a broken hand is certainly not going to keep him out. >> even when i broke it, i knew it was broken, but it was like, man, i'm in, and as long as it is not my lower trements, and i'm good. -- my lower extremities, i'm good. i will be all right. >> there you go. he is not about to sit out the game with just a busted up hand. so it is going to be good, the niners play the rams tomorrow at 10:00 and we will see what happens. and of course, i know where he is coming from because i hurt my hand opening a package.
