from your tree and use it as sort of a natural plant stake. here we have it resting against the leggy stock. if you need to tie it, you can use dental floss or spare string. the end of your christmas tree could be the beginning of a new year someplace else. >> i like the very idea of that. all right. here's your wreath. are we talking about a real wreath or artificial one? >> this is ars official. this is simple, again where your old sheets come in handy. don't throw them away. wrap it in bubble wrap and put in a king-sized pillow case. >> once that's done you start thinking about what to with the decorations outside. >> exactly. >> drew: have tips about that, as well. >> i do. at "this old house" we say safety comes first. when in doubt, wait it out. with snow and ice, definitely don't use a ladder. if you do, use a buddy because it will go faster and it is
8:38 am
safer. first don't pull the lights. they could break and you could get off balance, two scenarios you don't want after this beautiful festive light outside your house you don't want to get injured. >> you know, what that happens more often than not. >> it does. you want to, you know, there's no harm leaving them up there especially the weather on the east coast continues, wait a couple weeks until things melt and you can safely get up there. >> take your time. thank you so much. now here's rebecca. >> from the catwalk to the red carpet, what were the best and worst fashion moments of 2010. "early show" style contributor katrina szish is here to catalog the hits and misses. great to see you. >> good morning. >> yes plenty of hits and misses we'll get to but first talk about the trickle-down effect. what you see on the runway often translates to the streets and in beauty and fashion that's important. talk beauty of course. >> one of the biggest beauty trends from the runway to the reality was the red lip. we saw it on the dior runway as
8:39 am
we see it here and runways around the country and the word. and it really translated especially picked up by celebrities. we see here seen na miller showing how to make it work. it is something we're seeing that will continue a little bit into the new year but maybe a little less bold red and more of a kind of a juicy fruity lip. >> in the fashion world, what translated. >> one of my favorite trends anything military inspired. i'm rocking a bit of that today before the year's over. here we soo the mark by marc jacobs runway and celebrities picking up that trend which make it trickle down. katie holmes with thing jacket and recently shilo jolie pitt a military jacket. >> kids can can do it, too. >> who stood out as icons of 20 10i6r789s hard to ignore the effect lady gaga had on all of
8:40 am
us as red carpet royalty. whether you love her style or hate it it is completely undeniable she influenced designers, other celebrities and anyone who is involved in fashion. even just a bit. >> although i've yet to see a meat dress at the gap. >> you never know what will happen next year inch the red carpet rejects of 2010. >> yes, unfortunately, there are always some and got to call them out. one was snook i didn't. you know, for obvious reasons, need i say more. >> i think i heard harry gasp in the background. >> i thought i heard a noise. make it it stop frimplsts the hair to the clothes, elegance is something we strive for unless you are snooki. >> and celeb style finds its way to our wardrobes. what did you see? >> in terms of celebrity try. interesting beauty trend, showing your roots, really about having two-tone hair, sarah jessica parker did it, letting it grow out. drew barrymore rocked this look
8:41 am
you don't have to touch up every few months. >> and be yourself. always in fashion, right. >> it sure is. >> how about the top fashion trend. >> really one of the top fashion trends of the year was the fur vest. the faux fur vest, of course. kim kardashian is rocking it and rachel zoe is known for making that very, very popular, makes her own for qvc. >> exactly her own bround. in terms of what we have to look forward to in 2011, you mentioned the lips being carried over and being a slightly muted version of the big red we saw this year. what else do we expect next year? >> some trenz we'll hang onto. one is the platform shoe. people have been dying to kind of sound the death nil on. this here we see lady gaga do it over the top. it continues, here anne hathaway at her most recent premiere is wearing a more subtle version. it will definitely continue. >> something you are continuing with today. >> i always. in or out i'm a platform girl
8:42 am
for sure no doubt. >> definitely good if you are not as tall and sometimes can work if you are really tall, too, like yourself, works really well, looks great. in terms of the other looks we have to think about next year, are we going to be able to draw on what we already have on our wardwroebs from this year to make it work this 2011. >> absolutely. as i said, the platform shoe is something that is absolutely key. also, one thing we're probably going to want to avoid a little bit is -- well, actually stick to this, here we see jennifer lopez a leopard-inspired look, the animal print and especially lep pord in particular we'll see going, adam lambert even with it on his skinny tie. men can work it, too perhaps not something to do unless you are a rock star like him but definitely it is key. >> if you are a rock star like katrina, you can wear these fun thals. that was a big thing, a lot of people wore colorful nails, not typical reds but a lot of colors.
8:43 am
will that continue next year. >> we see rihanna rocking one of the trends, rocking embellished nails with designs on them talking about bright colors. we've seen the black nail trend come and go but we'll see bright colors, yellows, pinks, purples, normally you think little kids will wear will be all the rage for big girls, as well warchlts do we need to toss. >> definitely need to toss i hate to say it the 1950s inspired look we saw on "mad men" so beautiful and great silhouette but designers didn't carry that over the new year so we'll have to wave bye-bye to the beautiful silhouettes and also in a good way to jeggings, conan showed us why with those long strange legs of his, yes. but he really showed us perhaps this is not the most attractive trend to embrace, the jeans as leggings, which will stick around but say good-bye to jeggings and also silly bandz. they are great if you are 6, 7,
8:44 am
8 but someone like katy perry wearing them on the red carpet or mary kate olson, for example, time to -- >> skip the sillys. appreciate it. as always, thank you so much. >> thank you. >> harry. >> some foods are good for you. some are not so good. and some are considered lucky. "early show" contributor katie lee has rounded up some of her favorite dishes that just might bring you good fortune in the new year. good morning. >> that's right, harry. good morning. >> this is fun! >> well, you know, on new year's day, it's a time you can start fresh and you might as well start off on the right foot with some good luck foods. and the great thing about this meal is not only, you know, is it lucky and going to bring you good fortune but also really inexpensive and super healthy, no guilt a great way to start a new year's diet. >> i've heard of this before. a lot of people make black-eyed peas, right, for new year's? >> right. the hoppin' john. a traditional southern dish
8:45 am
we'll start with. i have my pan hot, putting in a bit of oil. >> right. >> and onions and red bell pepper to get some good flavor in there and some garlic. >> right. garlic. >> harry do you know why black-eyed peas are considered good luck. >> i want to know. >> well, it dates back to the civil war. >> okay. >> in vicksburg, mississippi. they were under attack and were about to run out of food. they didn't have anything left to eat and somebody found some dried black-eyed peas so they were considered lucky after. >> that except, they still ended up losing the battle. >> yes. >> just a point. a point of fact. >> at least they didn't go hungry. >> we actually found out the other day there was a message left in a bottle decoded by a cia guy and they found out that there were reinforcements across the river and they basically said, we're not coming. and they lost the next dave. >> but they had black-eyed peas. >> all right. >> i use tan plaque-eyed peas, about a dollar per can. super inexpensive and cook
8:46 am
really quickly. that's vegetable broth. put that in and you're just going to let this cook about ten minutes and it's going to come out looking like that. >> whoa. >> doesn't that look great? >> yeah. >> and we're just going to stir in some scallions and some parsley. give that a good little stir then put some rice on the plate, harry. >> yes, ma'am. >> scoop that on there and i'll give you a scoop of your black-eyed peas. i like to top mine with a bit of white cheddar cheese and of course you can put hot sauce on there. >> i think you need spicy. >> i love hot sauce, it is delicious. >> kind of a spiy girl. >> i'm going to move to collard greens, the color of money. they will bring good fortune in the year. i wonder if rebecca jarvis had that tip. >> i wonder if they taught that at the chicago school of business. >> some olive oil and onions. a lot of people make theirs with
8:47 am
hamhocks. i don't do that rvests i don't think you need it. i actually continuing is overpowering. >> do you think. >> i do mine with broth and soysauce noimplsts hamhocks? >> frus me, harry, they are delicious. they go in there. it looks like a ton but they cook way down. >> big time. >> those just go in your pot, going let them simmer for an hour so they cook a long time. >> can i just say for the record. >> here, let me put some on there. >> these are darn good, kid. >> thank you, harry. you saw how easy it was to make. >> super easy. >> you can put hot pepper vinegar on your greens. i like that, too. >> i'm going to have some of. >> that do you want to set that down there for me? >> yeah, sure. >> what else do you make. >> it is traditional to have a cake in the shape of a ring on new year's day kind of going full circle and dried fruit for the sweetness of life. this is a prune cake. we make this in my family, my uncle larry's favorite cake, every time i make it, i think of him. >> is he a good guy.
8:48 am
>> he was a great guy. yeah, we miss him very much. a buttermilk glaze, buttermilk and powdered sugar you cook on the stove. look at that. >> wow. >> how good does that look? i know you think prunes, how boring -- >> but delicious. >> i'll let do you the honors. >> all right. >> we have pomegranate juice, a symbol of fertility and prosperity. poor a little in there, harry. i'm going to put in some pomegranate seeds for us and we can toast our new year's resolutions and new year. >> you did make a resolution. >> i did. you know what mine is? to go see my mom more often. >> that's a good idea. would you tell your mother we said hello. i haven't seen her in a year or more. >> she loves you, harry. happy new year, all the best in 2011. >> wow. that's good. >> what you did say to put on the collard greens? >> red pepper vinegar. take vinegar and let the red
8:49 am
pepper soak in there. >> is that too much. >> no, that's fine. >> that's going to be all right? because i didn't taste the collard greens yet. >> let me see how you like those the homhock-free kinds. this meal is actually vegetarian >> what do you think? >> you were right. >> you batted a thousand. you bat ad thousand today, good job. >> great. >> we're feeling very fortunate and lucky this new year's for these recipes go to our website, earlyshow.cbsnews.com. to your health. we're going to be right back. you're watching "the early show" on cbs. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
