5:06 am
>> it's incredible amount of devastation and incredible amount of people that will probably lose their lives here. >> bodies are strewn everywhere. families still in shock asked us over and over, where is the help? >> we need to secure our border. >> does it matter whether you're a citizen or not, you're being criminalalized based on the color of your skin! >> i don't want them to build this mosque over here. i don't care where they build it. i just don't want them to build it here. >> the president's signature domestic issue becomes the law of the lan. >> insurance companies will no longer be able to drop people's coverage when they get sick. >> i'm not a witch. >> we've come to take our government back! >> a power shift in washington, as republicans take the house. oop. >> i'm not recommending for

every future president that they take a shellacking like i did last night. impl the first miner has just made it to the surface. >> one by one, husbands, brothers, fathers and sons emerged to joyous reunions that defied all odds. >> moments after the game ended pandemonium paraded through the french quarter. the saints and their city had earned this moment. >> now, we got a super bowl! >> and here with a closer look at some of the year's most memorable moments, "people"'s suzanne zuckerman. happy new year. >> and to you. >> thank you so much. great to have you here.
5:08 am
>> thank you. >> watching that piece it is very emotional to look back on a full year and those details. >> absolutely. what a year it was both for news and celebrity news and pop culture and just global news. it really was riveting to watch. >> "people" magazine has a double issue for the year end. you are looking at some of the most inspiring, uplifting, sensational moments of the last year. one of those moments is the chilean miners. >> oh, my gosh. what a story that was. you know, 69 days, miles underground these men just surviving by just sheer force of will and of course the wonderful footnote edison pen ya completing the new york marathon with ice bandaged around his knees, the heart it took to get through it demonstrated what he must have gone through underground, that resolve saw him through both of those ordeals. >> i have to say just when he was here in new york, there was sort of a rhythm in the city, a happiness and excitement over the fact he was here, he had come to new york after being
5:09 am
through such a momentous occasion in his individual life and you what was running in the marathon here. on a very, very different note, you have the julian assange wikileaks story that has really touched off headlines for the last couple of months of 2010 and looks like it is going to continue to be a big story of 2011. >> absolutely. as assange has said, there's more coming. this man is a polarizing figure. whether you believe he's a journalist, possibly a terrorist, he's dividing people's opinions but one thing for sure he's capturing headlines and we don't anticipate that stopping anytime soon. >> speaking of someone who's captureed a lot of headlines, and polarized, as well, sarah palin. >> yes. >> she's been on the campaign trail in 2010, in addition to that she's had her own reality tv series. >> politico, best selling author, reality star, what can't sarah palin accomplish? she actually sat down and told "people" the reason she wanted to star in "sarah palin's
5:10 am
alaska" because she was inspired as a child watching shows, documentaries about the great outdoors and wanted to celebrate her great state and bring that experience to viewers. that's wonderful. then, at the same time, we see her starring, co-starring in a way on tlc with "people" magine's one of our favorite cover stars kate gosselin. it is so interesting to see a political figure and reality star sort of come together in one, in one figure that we're all fascinating with, which is sarah palin, definitely one of "people's" most intriguing this year. >> also a very intriguing person, sandra bullock. >> yes. >> won the oscar, academy award but also went through significant hardship a very public divorce and on top of that adopted a brand new baby. >> such a year of dramatic highs and lows for sandra bullock. she, of course, began 2010, winning the oscar if "the blind side" and was blind-sided herself with the news of jesse james's infidelity. meanwhile all the while she had this brand new beautiful adopted
5:11 am
baby boy at home. while the year began with lots of drama for sandra, it ended with quiet solitude, home with louie, being a mom focusing on her life as a single mom. >> that's really significant because the role louie has played in sandra's life and will continue to play seems to be very significant. >> as her co-star in "the proposal" betty white said, louie has filled up sandra's whole soul. there is a new side to her and we can't wait to see her until 2011. >> i want to get to the late-night wars. everywhere in the press people were talking about the late-night wars and seems the comeback kid is the real star. >> conan o'brien is certainly is the comeback kid, that's what we dubbed him in our year-end double issue. what's interesting about the way he weathered this controversy during the late-night wars, he always got through it with human, that team coco banner that hung from the building when all of the drama was going on through the present day with his
5:12 am
brand new tbs show he's kept it funny the entire time and that's been what's seen him through and made him have continued success. >> couple other really interesting characters, mark zuckerberg has been a big one in the public yip the last year from "the social network" depicting the founding of facebook to his $100 million donation in newark, new jersey, the public schools there. >> right. mark himself called "the social network" a work of fiction. whether you believe he's a scheming jerk or a genius, again another polarizing figure for 2010 but he's a philanthropist and at 26 years old one of the youngest billionaires we know and actually plans, he says, to donate half of his vast fortune to charity. >> which is very honorable of him to do. in terms of some of the really exciting things that have happened recently, the big engagement of kate and wills, incredible. >> we can't get enough of this story. obviously with the wedding being april 29th, it is not going
5:13 am
anywhere, only going to continue to be a huge story in 2011. >> and i have a feeling people will continue to follow it. >> yes, we will. you can bet on that. >> as we will, too. thank you so much. happy new year. >> happy new year. >> thanks for being with us. >> thank you. >> back over to you, russ. >> rebecca, thank you very much. the holidays may be just about over but does not mean the sales are done. in fact, january can be one of the best months to buy certain items at discounted prices. here to tell us what's on sale beginning right now is aol consumer advicer regina lewis. happy new year you to. >> thank you. you, too >> winter coats, good deals. >> seems a no-brainer but especially true this year, coming off the warmest october in 20 years. they made up for some sales in december but there's still a lot out there we see 50% off in most parts of the country, still have three months of cold weather. i do not know about your house but somebody will luls the other glove at any moment now. it's good to scoop those up. >> we always heard about january white sales, linen sales.
5:14 am
why january? >> dates back to 1878, john wannamaker invented it put all the linens on sale, of course they were all white. macy sent these over and we spoke with sears, talking about 70% off. >> wow, goodness. >> it is a legitimate fe no na. >> 70% off. >> 70% off. >> talk about electronics, digital cameras it is interesting january would be the for sales on those. >> i tell you what. the consumer electronics show is january 6th to # 1th in las vegas, i'm headed out there when they unveil all the latest and greatest gadgets. what that does is brings down the price of the last greatest model. they tend to go down about 30%. january is actually a very good time to buy electronics. >> we talk about plasma v tvs and l.e.d. tvs being on sale s. it a good time to buy? >> it is except for the super
5:15 am
bowl because they go back up and guys like you need to have them. >> we are simple to figure out, of course. toys on sale in january. >> sure. seems like a no-brainer but especially true this year. toys came in and started at a lower price point. amazon sent these over. i have tupperware bins in my basement. i load up on toys right about now and then i save a fortune when the kids go to birthday parties throughout the year a. great trick. >> a great idea, very, very good idea. talk about some of this stuff. this is obvious but people think in january, you know what, i've seen all this christmas stuff out. it's on sale. christmas is so far away, i should shouldn't bother with that now. you say get the stuff now. >> they are giving it away now. but then you'll go to the store and it's going to be gone. this is really the week to get this stuff things like christmas lights and christmas cards. the other trend is it's great this year because they weren't so color specific. everything wasn't red and green, you've got blues, shades of green, silver was in as we've seen on the set here all month
5:16 am
long, brown. we'll need to wrap rebecca's wedding gift, rye. >> of course. >> we'll need to wrap birthday gifts. baby gifts throughout the year. pick the colors relatively neutral and don't just think holidays but i'll milk this stuff all year long. >> another one that got me, gift cards, deals in january on them. what's that about? >> because there is a re-sale market. people got them for christmas. some got gift cards to places they don't like to shop and wanted cash so they went to a site like plastic jungle and sold them, which means you can buy them now. there's a great selection like buying discounted cash. i can buy a $100 gift card for 90 bucks. the really bargain bees load up on these to buy something like a washer and dryer they will buy five $100 gift cards at five dollars off. if you know you will shop at that store, discounted cash. >> you talked about a historic cal reference, some are no-brainers, any other reasons
5:17 am
in particular january being this time of year to get good stuff. >> it kims down to timing. the other we don't have is carpeting. people entertain for the holidays and in a rush to get their carpets done. come january the carpet guy is sitting there, nobody is calling them. >> like the lawn guy. >> yeah. so, timing is everything but january is a good month to buy these items and to stockpile. >> okay. regina lewis, as always, thanks. >> of course. >> happy new year. >> thank you, too. >> happy shopping. you can log on to our website for more on super january sales. rebecc rebecca? >> now is the perfect time for get a fresh start on your finances for the new year. a survey found 65% of americans were resolved to save more money in 2011. and if you are one of those personal finance expert farnoosh ter rabe joins us with tips to organize a budget and keep you
5:18 am
on track for spending goals also the author of "psych yourself rich." great to have you with us. happy new year. >> happy new year. >> very important. everybody thinks about it. >> what is interesting about the is survey while we have our mind on the money we also want to get back to business in terms of our health, in terms of spending time with family and sort of getting back to the old emotions. but, money is still really important and so we've got some tips how to keep you on track. >> yes, they all kind of work together, all this stuff works together, if you are financially more on track your health can be better and a lot of things work out better. in terms of how you actually approach this and start your budgeting, what's the first thing you recommend? >> the first one is to have a money buddy, okay, someone who as you would have an exercise buddy, right? that's going to keep you on track financially. you are going to share your goals with this person. you're going to, you know, maybe shop together but this is being a frugal flend keeping you on track and in line with your goals, your mom, a best friend,
5:19 am
a spouse. second have a money zone. what is this? it's a place in your home you can go to and it has all of your financial to-dos but also you can visualize your goals, as well. without goals, money is very intangible. have pictures of the vacations you want to take or have inspirational quotes but also have your file folders and your receipt boxes and it doesn't have to be a big space. it can just be a place at the end of the kitchen table or a table in the sunroom or in the garage but it's your zone and it kind of is away from all the other clutter in the house. >> everyone is dying where we would find that zone in your home. >> i live in a very small new york one-bedroom apartment. it's actually in my bedroom. i have a little nook at the end of my chest of draws and a little desk with my laptop and it's where a lot of my file folders go with the receipt boxes and all that stuff that will come in handy come tax time. >> when it comes to paying your bills and keeping track of all that, that obviously goes hand
5:20 am
in hand with having the budget, working with your money buddy. how do you think about that? >> automation is absolutely key. so, if your goal this year is to save the best way to do it, do it automatically so it's painless. behavior yorl experts have done studies where with cash and automatically. thee either pay out of pocket or electronically. those who patron nickly have more financial security, they're more happy, they sleep better at night. if you are worried about, you know, just having a better mindset this year, pay automatically and then the other thing is to pay with cash, okay. >> when you are actually out shopping. >> when you are actually out shopping. surveys show recently when we use cash we actually save 12 to 18% of our dollars. get this, mcdonald's did a survey of their customers, the customers who use credit cards versus cash spent seven dollars versus $4.50 on average. so, 50% more using credit cards more likely to get the smoothie or the extra large coke.
5:21 am
>> when you look at the dollar bill you realize if this is the last thing in my wallet and i'm handing it over i'm done. >> when it's gone, it's gone. when it's painful. that's key. credit cards a painless. you spend and feel you can afford something when technically you may not be able to. >> in terms of setting that budget and sticking to it, are there any words of wisdom, the words that farnoosh says we should live by? >> everyone should have a rule of thumb or several rules of thumb when it comes to money. we do this when we diet saying we are not going to eat past 8:00 or no des setters this week, only the weekend. with money i think a similar tactic can work. whether i'm going to talk to my partner if i'm going to spend more than $100 on a household item or it's i'm going to pay myself first at the beginning of the month before i spend anything that i want. so, that you have these rules of thumb, these benchmarks because when you make decisions, financial decisions especially, it can get very hairy, very tough. but when you give yourself these benchmarks these sort of rules of thumb to fall back on --

5:32 am
we all know you eat less and exercise more. we all know houf. what is it? maybe the cause of the eating we might need to look at that. if we are not eating because we are hungry, we need to look at that. but the important thing to look is accountability. we need accountability whether you join a national program to lose weight or do it with a friend, be accountable to yourself that helps you see it and also don't give up. i just lost 10 pounds getting ready for the new year. >> congratulations. >> if i had a bad day instead of saying forget it eat what you want, stick with it, stick with it, get back on track. so accountability and consistency. >> almost like you are telling me a mantra to keep in mind to stay on track. >> you have to be very conscious. that's the hard part. we get back to our real life and lose track of things. >> people are oftentimes this time of year are thinking about a new job, a better job. what do you think is wrong about that resolution? >> well, better is not specific. so, any resolution needs to be specific. what's better, more money, more
5:33 am
accountability -- more authority, more creativity, what's better? nine out of ten times my clients don't need to change jobs. they need to get specific about what needs to change, might be a smaller thing and do research, do you need to get a mentor, a coach? get out there and do industry research on what salary you can demand and even in tough times, you can ask for more. >> so, research, ask for more and define what you want. >> yes, that's the key. define it. >> a lot of people this time of year are also thinking in the new year i'm going to get a boyfriend, i'm going to get a girlfriend, i'll get married, you know, i'm going to force somebody to get married to me, maybe. what's wrong with that in your view. >> it's tough about the relationship piece so much is out of our control. you know, you can't control, make somebody to marry you. >> it takes two to tango. >> it does. it's important in this case if that's your resolution to stay very open minded, don't make each date mr. wrong or miss right and go home exhausted and

5:35 am
but if you have a spending habit don't reward yourself by buying something, please. >> find another habit. >> another bad habit. >> i'm only joking there, obviously. but it sounds a lot like there's something that has to come from inside, too. you have to kind of constantly remind yourself about these things and remind yourself of ultimately what the goal is versus what you're trying to do and try and determine is the short-term satisfaction going outweigh the long-term goal. >> it is a constant conversation with yourself, it really is. that's why it's important to have others in your life who can support you and remind you if you are not telling yourself the right thing. we talked about the difference between the people who stick to them and don't, it is discipline, that inner commitment to yourself. start off that year loving what you want to accomplish and loving you and take it slow and small. >> take it slow and small. that's a good piece of advice. don't try and overthink or get too grandiose with what you want to accomplish. >> a lot of people this time of year will set the big one, i'm going to run a marathon, write a
