is launched by the navy this morning to cover videos that surfaced over the weekend. the raunchy clips were made in 2006 and 2007. they were produced on and broadcast to the crew of the "uss enterprise" while on deployment to the middle east. >> there's a really good chance you're going to be offended. >> reporter: the star of the videos is captain owen honors he at times appears as three different characters. honors was second in command when the videos were made. he took over as the ship's command in may. >> let's get to my favorite topic and something foreign to the gay kid over there, chicks in the shower. >> reporter: the videos were made while the ship was on deployment to waters off the middle east. they feature raunchy clips scenes of sailors male and female showering together and numerous acts of simulated masturbation. >> please tonight enjoy the movie. >> reporter: the clips were obtained by the newspaper "the

georgia pilot" and posted online over the weekend. they were apparently produced for a crew orientation project meant to boost morale. 5,800 sailors saw the videos over the ship's closed circuit television system. >> as usual, the admiral and the captain have no idea about the contents of the video. >> reporter: "the virginia pilot" reports some crew members were offended but the complaints were dismissed. the videos reportedly still available on the ship's computer system. the navy said they put a stop to the videos several years ago and called them clearly inappropriate saying, quote, those in command are charged to lead by example and are held accountable for setting the proper tone and upholding the standards of honor, courage and commitment that we expect sailors to exemplify. it isn't clear why the videos took until the weekend to surface. the "uss enterprise" is scheduled to depart for the middle east again in a few weeks. right now it is known whether captain honors will command the ship or be on board. a bill that provides medical aid to 9/11 rescue workers and survivors is now law.

president obama signed the $4.2 billion measure sunday while on vacation in hawaii. it covers police, firemen and rescuers who worked in the world trade center ruins, one of the last measures before they adjourned in december. the president said he was honored to sign the bill. when the 112th congress convenes on wednesday, the republicans will control the house. gop leaders say they'll take direct aim as one of the president obama's prized piece of legislation. it was a bill he was able to push through without republican support. health care reform. randall pinkston is in washington with more. randall, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. remember the talk of bipartisan cooperation? well, forget about it because right now that does not appear to be what's shaping up in the early days of the 112th congress. as soon as the new congress is sworn in, republicans are vowing to go after president obama's health care law as their first order of business. >> we'll look at these individual pieces to see if we

can't have the thing crumble. >> reporter: with the solid majority in the house, the gop plans to hold a vote this month repealing the overhaul but democrats are promising to put up a fight. >> it is not going to happen. >> reporter: they insist americans are starting to see benefits from the legislation. >> a constituent in my district came up to me a few weeks ago and thanked me for saving her $3,000 a year to put her two adult children back on the insurance. >> reporter: the gop is not only taking aim at health care, some republican leaders are also threatening to launch investigations into white house handling of federal spending. >> time and time again what we have seen with the obama administration is played fast and loose with the walking around money congress gave them. >> reporter: a showdown over the debt ceiling is also brewing. the federal debt stands at $13.9 trillion and is inching closer to the limit of $14.3 trillion. >> i'm not going to vote for a debt ceiling increase unless we go back to 2008 spending levels. >> the debt ceiling is not something to toy with. >> reporter: republicans oppose raising the ceiling without tackling government spending but the obama administration warns that approach could damage

economic recovery. and the fight over the debt ceiling could reveal some disagreements among republicans, some who want to raise the debt ceiling, others that don't want to do that unless there are drastic budget cuts. >> randall pinkston, thank you. yooirks this morning, a 60-mile stretch of main california interstate is shut down because of blowing snow and ice. interstate 5 was closed sunday. it's expected to remain shut down until later today. more than 100 cars and trucks were stranded. besides the snow and ice, winds are gusting up to 90 miles per hour. in new york city, the trouble is garbage. piles of it uncollected since the blizzard a week ago. the city says it's going to resume limited garbage collection today. crews dealt with the snow left by the christmas weekend storm. the city has taken a lot of heat, some residents say the city's snow removal efforts were less than adequate.

now the garbage is piled as high as the snow was. there's no apparent damage or injury following a strong earthquake that struck south central chile. the magnitude 7.1 quake struck yesterday centered about 370 miles southwest of santiago. tens of thousands of residents fled their homes. cell phone and electric power was knocked out. on the "cbs money watch" on this monday morning, stocks rose in asia on the first day of trading in 2011. ashley morrison has that and other business headlines. good morning to you. asian markets started out 2011 with a boost. hong kong's hang seng gains more than 1% and the nikkei was closed. today wall street gets the latest on construction spending and the manufacturing sector. on friday, stocks closed out the year with a mixed session. the dow gained almost 8 while the nasdaq gave back 10. for the year, the major indexes all produced double-digit gains. the dow rose 11%. the s&p 500 gained almost 13%

and the tech-heavy nasdaq was 2010's big winner with a return of 16.9%. while the numbers are impressive, for the decade, the market managed just small gains after the losses sustained during the financial crisis. well, getting a handle on your credit should be easier in the new year. under federal rules that took effect on saturday, creditors must notify consumers when they have charged a higher rate compared to others because of a poor credit history. if you're charged a higher rate, you are also entitled to a free copy of your credit score and how it compares to other consumers. expedia.com is the second online travel site to stop selling tickets for american airlines. it is the latest twist between the nation's third largest carrier and travel-based websites over fees. last month, american yanked the listings from orbitz.com saying consumers could just as easily buy tickets from its own website. your iphone alarm should go

arkansas are trying to solve a bizarre mystery of dead birds. on sunday, environmental service workers finished picking up the carcasses of about 2,000 red-winged black birds that fell dead from the sky in central arkansas friday night. officials speculate they might have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail. new year's eve fireworks might have also caused them to die from stress. fellow officers are mourning a sheriff's deputy shot and killed in ohio on new year's day. the deadly shootout 50 miles west of columbus also left a deputy wounded and a suspect dead. deputy suzanne hopper, a her of two, was killed while investigating a report of gun fire. sandra hughes reports. >> reporter: a barrage of gunfire at a mobile home park in western ohio after a man took the life of a sheriff's deputy who never had a chance to take cover. >> 69 is down. i repeat, 69 is down. >> reporter: the gun battle was between a man inside this trailer and law enforcement

officials. >> right now, i've got a silver trailer with a male with a shotgun in it. and i've got suzanne down in front of that trailer. >> reporter: deputy hopper shot to death, another police officer was injured and rushed to a waiting ambulance. the suspect, identified as michael ferryman, was also killed. the 40-year-old deputy was a recently married mother of two. she was shot while photographing a footprint in the mobile home park in enon beach. she had responded to a call of shots fired in the area. >> open the door. >> reporter: after hopper was shot, police tried to convince the suspect to surrender, but he opened fire. >> all of a sudden, we heard you, in your trailer, blam. shotgun. right through my front door. hit my heater. busted out the back window and my wife and i got cut from the glass. >> reporter: it's a stunning loss for the department which must help plan her funeral. >> she is being escorted by lieutenant witt and lieutenant lucas and she'll be coming in a

coffin draped by flag. >> reporter: she was wearing a bulletproof vest but it wasn't enough to protect her from the deadly bullet. sandra hughes, cbs news. scientists announced plans for a new blood test for cancer later today. the test would be able to spot a single cancer cell among a billion ones. researchers at massachusetts general hospital joined johnson & johnson to try to make the test available in a few years. doctors hope to use it to find out quickly if a treatment is working. actress lindsay lohan could be released from rehab as early as today. lohan said she was looking forward to the start of a new year on a message on her twitter account. she said today is the first day of the rest of my life. today was the day lohan was scheduled to leave betty ford center after three months of treatment. actor david arquette went into rehab. the 39-year-old arquette is dealing with alcohol and depression according to "people" magazine. his estranged wife courteney cox said she supports the decision to get help.

time now for a check of the national forecast. latest satellite picture shows the northeast clearing out from the showers and fog. another storm is bringing rain and snow to the southwest. and much of the south and northwest have no clouds in sight. later today, mild and sunny conditions will be in the south from new mexico to georgia. chilly air and snow showers for the northern plains and california dealing with another storm causing soaking rains and mountain snow and the northeast has clouds fading away to sunny skies and breezy conditions. in sports this morning, four teams won nfl division titles, the wild card weekend of the playoffs are set, too. to the highlights. peyton manning of indianapolis, two touchdown passes against tennessee. colts 23-20 win gives them the afc south title. they play new york jets next saturday. seattle scored a touchdown on the opening possession. they went on to beat st. louis 16-6. sea hawks made history becoming

more rain expected today has officials fearing new mudslides. an american woman is making a difference in afghanistan. she's working to give women and children an education and there isn't much anything or anybody can do to stop her. mandy clark reports from kabul. >> reporter: these afghan street children are so poor they're forced to beg or work in markets to help support their families. enter anna hacker who at 67 is running a school she hopes to give these kids a shot at better life and she isn't letting anything stand in her life. >> i'm 67. i had a blood clot a year ago and still coming back. >> reporter: anna first came to afghanistan in 1973 as a teacher. now 45, ickbal says there isn't anything he wouldn't do for his old teacher. >> she is an angel to everybody she sees. she touches them, and she changes their lives. >> you can put your books, groceries. >> reporter: it is not just the

lives of children she is changing. she set up literacy classes for widows. this is the greatest gift anyone can give me, she says. >> they have given me so much more than you can imagine. just coming and seeing them smiling. >> reporter: a new building is under construction for the children and widows. the founder has big plans for it. this will be more than just a school. there will be a playground, library and computer room, but there'll also be doctors, counselors and social workers on call. the goal is a community center for those who need it most. everything that has gone into the school has been from charitable donations or from her own savings. she admits she is on the lookout for more donors. >> i probably have been shameless all my life. you know? and i'll see you on a plane and say, hey! now we see the boys. >> reporter: anna says she is also shamelessly optimistic that through education afghanistan will flourish once more. >> bye-bye.

rock n roll legend chuck berry is resting in a st. louis area home after collapsing after a concert saturday night. about an hour into the show in chicago, 84-year-old berry felt ill. he was helped off the stage. after a second attempt to resume the show, he decided to end it but not before doing the duck walk. his agent said he was exhausted but in good health. a big name in television is offering something new on the tv dial. over the weekend oprah winfrey launched her own cable channel. early reports show viewers like what they see. here's michelle miller. >> happy new year, everybody, and welcome to own. >> reporter: the queen of talk and the discovery channel have reported invested $189 million in the 24/7 lifestyle cable channel with oprah-branded stars like dr. phil, rachael ray and dr. oz.
