two have already closed and the last one couldn't match the low prices of the big-box discount chain or the allure of a whole foods market down the street. >> we put in our fair share of hours, as many as 80 hours a week, and we've had plenty, we've had enough. >> reporter: the constantinos reportedly sold out to a developer who plans to bring a new upscale chain to the same location, but will the employees be hired back? workers declined to speak on camera, but some were clearly not happy, having to look for work in this economy. constantino's becomes the second family independent grocer to go out of business in san jose, after pw markets closed last october. >> obviously conditions are changing and everyone gets older. so that's, you know, like i said, best of luck to them in their retirement. the final day for business at the store is scheduled for february 8.

some bank robbers are on the loose after a situation involving the s.w.a.t. team in south san francisco. the s.w.a.t. team was called in after reports of a hostage situation at a bank of the west on westborough boulevard yesterday, but when officers got there, they found the employees and customers seemed just fine. there apparently had been a robbery or at least an attempt, but the culprits got away. no word on whether or not they got any money. a new political era is about to begin in san francisco. a new board of supervisors will be sworn in today, four new members set to take office within the next few hours. their first job is certainly a big one, officially electing an interim mayor to fill gavin newsom's shoes, as he goes on to become lieutenant governor on monday. as linda yee reports, all signs point to city administrator edwin lee as the new leader approved by the outgoing board yesterday. >> the motion passes. >> reporter: city administrator will likely be san francisco's
8:37 am
next mayor t will be up to the new board of supervisors to ratify this nomination next week. lee, a life-long bureaucrat for the city will be the first asian-american mayor here and that reduced chinatown power house rose pak to tears. >> well, you know, first time, long time coming. >> reporter: before the vote turned out supervisor chris daily expressed his disappointment at the back room political deals that put lee into the mayor's office. >> i have probably a reputation for raining on parades, and today will likely be no different. >> reporter: and it was daily who promised political revenge upon board president david chu for supporting lee. >> frankly, i wasn't surprised. we all believe very intensely what we believe. and it wouldn't be san francisco politics without some intensity. >> but today was 10 to 1. >> today was 10 to 1 and i'm

weekend. >> no, no rain! but it is chilly out there. >> it's freezing, like for days! >> i know. ice fog is in the forecast. not for the bay area, but up in the highcountry, we'll be looking at freezing fog. that's a bit of a difficult thing to deal with, as, again, all you can do is slow down and hope for the best. the cool pattern will continue through the weekend. there is relief in sight and we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. also, will you get a security pat-down or not next time you travel by air? when the underwear you wear could get you in a touchy situation. and we're getting a break from the rain now, but we'll tell you where you can see mudslides threatening california. you're watching the weekend early edition on cbs 5. ,,,,,, it's really delicious, mom.

california. the backyards of those homes have already slid down a hill in the orange county town of san clemente. residents say they heard a crack on thursday morning. the next morning, they found a 25 to 50-foot drop at their back door. yikes! recent heavy rains are to blame. yesterday, the families were told they could not go into their homes. that means red tags. since the slide is on private appropriate, the homeowners will be responsible for repairs. the perils of living on a hillside. >> on the fault line. and statewide, we're looking at 150% of normal rainfall for this time of year. >> which is good news. >> yes, it is in some respects, not good for those folks there. that translates to 150 to 200% of snow in the mountains. good news for skiers out there and the water resource people. they are all happy, as the reservoirs are up. now all we got to do is hang on to the snow and not look for a quick melt. no melting today in the bay area here. as you can see, cloudy and cool
8:43 am
conditions prevail here. foggy at the beach and we'll stay that way most of the day. some mixing. there i am. clear skies, as you can see, looking at a bit of sunshine with that low fog deck in and across the bay this morning. this is a summer fog pattern for us, as we got a combination of things going on here. we've got the coastal stratus and the fog in the inland valley. two different fog mechanisms, but the end result is the same. foggy and cool conditions prevail. onshore breeze keeps the coastal stratus going. out in the valley, we've got the dense fog prevailing out there, causing visibility problems on the i-5, as you would expect, and freezing fog conditions up over i-80. so fog is the story today. cool and dry through the weekend. we'll look for the summer fog pattern to begin to mix out
8:44 am
late this afternoon, into tomorrow, as this little disturbance clears the area. doesn't have any rain for us to speak of, but we will see that mixing take place here by this afternoon, into tomorrow, resulting in a little more sunshine across the bay area and a gradual warmup. so let's get rid of this fog and dry it out here into the beginning of the week. doesn't look like any rain headed our way, until probably midweek of next week, into next weekend. so we've got a nice little break in the rain. the gray matter is prevalent today, and it's a summer fog pattern. but as i mentioned, the end result is the game. gray and cool through the morning hours. remaining a little drizzle. that would be it as far as any precipitation amounts out of this pattern, while up in the highcountry, partly cloudy here. as i mentioned, some ice fog expected on i-80 which could cause really slick conditions, kind of like black ice. you don't know you're on it till you hit it and start to slide. temperatures will be very cool. even in the bay area tonight,
8:45 am
tonight, into tomorrow night, skies clear out and we'll look for very cold temperatures. hard frost possible once again in the bay valleys here, up around the north bay, especially santa rosa and napa, cool the next several evenings. remaining cool today, upper 40s to low 50s. add a couple degrees to this for tomorrow, continue that warming into and through the beginning of the week, as we will see skies clearing out here a bit, giving up the fog for some sunshine before the rain returns by midweek. and that will likely continue on and off through the end of the week from the looks of things. at this point, doesn't look like a big gulley washer taking shape, but we will see a pattern change, which the end result will mean warmer temperatures, and that's not a bad thing, especially given the chill in the air out there the last several days. >> it's been awesome. i've cycled through all my sweaters for the year. >> ice fog! >> sounds really nasty! didn't know there were so many varieties. >> all kinds of different kinds of fog. like i said, the end result is the same. >> thanks for that, jim. i know you've been looking

8:47 am
sure there are tongs. no hands in there. let's take a look and make sure how it looks. make sure baby spinach, the end display is nice and green. if you see a lot of yellow, forget it, get away. that means it's stored around for too long. this here has a lot of water to it. i like it with less water. lot of times the water, which stays on the leaf, could break down the spinach. the drier the display, the better it's going to be. at home, store it in the refrigerator right away and open up the plastic bag. baby spinach, loaded with nutritional value, tastes great in a salad or no matter how you enjoy it. even saute well, and the prices are great this time of year. i'm tony tantillo, your fresh grocer. always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy, and when i squeeze this here, hear ,,,,,,,,

the new year, but it's never too late to make resolutions when it comes to your kids. joining us now, his first appearance of 2011, jim stire from common sense media. tell us, we're talking about electronics. big ces show. what kind of advice do you have for us, kids and electronics, how should you deal with all the technology coming out? >> well, as everybody knows, this is sort of major new boom in 3d tvs now, i guess. ces was all about 3d tvs, tablet computers, even new fancy cell phones. everybody's got -- when you're thinking about your kids as a parent, they have gone back to school now, probably using their laptops or other computers more. if they are over 10 or 11, might have a cell phone, may betexing their friends, using their cell phones a lot, although i would urge you to be -- wait to get them until they are older, get them a cell phone. this is a big media and technology time to set rules again and remind them the resolutions for 2011, which big
8:52 am
picture is, set a clear set of rules and a healthy media and technology diet for kids. don't let them go wild. what kind of regulations would you recommend? >> well, the first thing i would remind you is to say to your kids and make it really clear to them, they can't just sit there and use their game boys or their game machines or sit in front of the tv or the computer for unlimited amounts of time. set clear time limits on their screen time. does that depend on the family? how many hours would you recommend today? >> look, of course it depends on the family. all things regarding media technology, don't just depend on the family. they depend on your kid. but you need to set time limits and in a sense, set a healthy media diet. next, if your kids play video games, like we see on the screen, or if they are big computer game users, some of the stuff we were just watching is not particularly appropriate for younger kids. you need to say you have an hour of this today, that's it, and then i don't approve of that game. if your kids are older, teen
8:53 am
boys love the violent video games. you got to set a limit on that. even though it's a little chilly outside, as we just heard from jim bernard, you got to get them outside and play. you do not want your kids sitting in front of the screen. on a weekend, maybe a couple of hours of screen time. you know, you might want to let them watch a football game or two or stuff like that, but in general, set a really healthy balance and set limits. if your kid's a gamer, set limits on that. if your kid has a cell phone and does text message, set a plan that says x number of texts per month, period. it's important to sort of start the year off with clear rules, clear limits, and the concept that your kids need to talk with you about some of the content. if your kids are already on facebook, for example, this is an incredibly important social platform to kids, quite honestly. >> for everybody! >> well, for everybody, but kids use it differently. they compare themselves on that platform. they put up their own identities, et cetera. so it's a really good time to have a discussion about what kind of content they are consuming or creating.
8:54 am
and second, here's the time limit. you know what? no tv during the week, no video games during the week, whatever your rules are. but have rules. it's more important to have rules than anything else. if families have rules, kids do better in school. the science on that is clear. so start the year off with a good set of resolutions and have a really good happy 2011. technology is everywhere in our kids' lives. let's set a clear, healthy balance on what they do and stay involved as parents. we have to communicate about the communication. it's only going to expand the wild west. >> that's right. i'm sure you'll be back to tell us more. thank you, jim stire for joining us this morning. child prostitution has been a real problem in the u.s. for decades, but there is help out there for those kids in this week's jefferson award winner cofounder of the organization that helps get them off of the street. as kate kelly reports, this woman has made it her mission to remind people there are kids who need our support. >> reporter: 21-year-old thelma macy likes to be called t for

short. she knows these oakland streets for well. for years, she worked them, starting at the age of 10. >> i had a lot of abuse and neglect within the system. so i basically diverted to the streets. >> reporter: she might have stayed there had she not found the support she needed from this woman, nola brandtly. >> i needed encouraging adult, resources and programs, needed the idea that it is possible, needed the idea that there was more to life than the streets. >> reporter: nola helped t discover a better life through motivating, inspiring, supporting, and serving sexually exploited youth. nola cofounded the nonprofit that provides whole listic services for child victims of child trafficking. and she's clear, don't call them prostitutes. >> the very first thing that folks don't get, there is no such thing as a child or teen prostitute, period, end of the story. these children are victims of abuse in their exploitation
8:56 am
situation. >> reporter: nola got the idea to start this three years ago while working at an oakland social service agency. she saw more and more girls were being exploited on the streets and over the internet. >> 1.6 million children run away from home this year. within 48 hours, a teenager that runs away from home will be approached by a man. it's not about them looking for trouble. it's about trouble looking for them. >> reporter: through the organization, nolaed indicates professionals in the field, reminding them kids on the street are kids, mostly poor and sexually abused in early childhood. >> if they are victims, we want them to recover and become survivors, we have to process them through the system as victims, not criminals. >> reporter: in t's case, she chaingsd her life and now works as a peer counselor. at the daytime drop-in center, girls in transition learn about therapy, support to change their life. >> back in the day, when i had experienced my street life, i didn't have any goals.
8:57 am
now i have so many goals i can't keep up with them! i'm actually getting a job coach to help me out. >> reporter: nola says with the help of volunteers and mentors, 90% of the kids in case management go on to get their ged's, the first step to success. >> i might not see achieved what i want in my lifetime. that's not what it's about. it's about knowing that each day, what i do, when i get up, is contributing to somebody else's happiness, contributing to somebody else's possibility at success. >> reporter: so for giving girls the support they need to build new lives, this week's jefferson award in the bay area goes to nola brandtly. kate kelly, cbs 5. >> she helps more than a hundred girls every year. if you want to get involved and donate, go to cbs5.com. click at the cbs 5 icon at the top of the page and then jefferson awards. it has been missing for a couple of centuries. in the next half hour of weekend early edition, what
