this afternoon. the shooting gravely wounded congresswoman gabrielle giffords and killed six others. giffords remains in a medically induced coma. law enforcement officials say evidence found at 22-year-old jared lee loughner's home indicates he targeted giffords but they believe he acted alone. last night a candlelight vigil was set up at the hospital where giffords is being treated. besides giffords, 13 others were wounded in saturday's attack. all besides giffords are out of intensive care. sandra hughes is in tucson with the latest. sandra, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. authorities will not say right now where jared loughner is being held. whether he is still here in tucson, whether he's on his way to phoenix. and they also won't say he still does not have a lawyer. 22-year-old jared loughner will face a host of charges when he appears in federal court today, including murder and attempted assassination. >> how many people are injured there? >> we have about a total of ten

people, maybe more. oh, my gosh. >> reporter: he's accused of single-handedly turning this tucson grocery store into a bloodbath saturday. police say he shot congresswoman gabrielle giffords in the head at point blank range during an event before turning his gun on innocent bystanders. six people were killed, and 14 others wounded. authorities say giffords was the intended target. at loughner's home, investigators found a letter the congresswoman sent him in 2007. thanking him for attending an event. and an envelope that had the phrases "giffords," "i planned ahead," and "my assassination" written on it. giffords remains hospitalized in critical condition this morning. doctors are optimistic about her odds but say it could take weeks, or even months, before they know the full extent of her brain injuries. >> brain swelling at any time can take a turn for the worse. but i am cautiously optimistic. >> reporter: giffords' intern, daniel hernandez, is being credited with helping save her life. the college junior was just days on the job when he rushed to her

side. >> the first thing i did was to try and get her up so that she wasn't slumped over. the next thing i did was to make sure that i applied pressure to her wound to try to stem the flow of blood. >> reporter: last night giffords' husband released a statement thanking supporters. gabby was doing what she loved most, he said, hearing from her constituents. when this tragedy occurred. serving southern arizonans is her passion and nothing makes her more proud than representing them in congress. now there are so many heroes to talk about from saturday. from the bystanders that tackled the gunman and held him until the police arrived, to the 61-year-old woman who grabbed the gun magazine, took it away so the gunman could not reload, and start shooting. terrell, just amazing stories to be told from saturday of bravery. >> and stories that we'll continue to hear. before we let you go this morning, the person of interest police were looking for. has he been found or identified?

>> reporter: well, terrell, yes he has. right now they're saying that the gunman they believe acted alone. they think that that person that they say they were looking for, all day yesterday, a man between the ages of 40 and 50 was really a cab driver. they have a picture of him from inside the safeway. they believe that he drove the gunman to the safeway, and the reason they have a picture of him from inside the safeway is that he went inside to get change from him, and then, of course, left. >> sandra hughes in tucson for us this morning. sandra, thank you. meanwhile, president obama asks that all americans observe a moment of silence in honor of the dead and wounded. this morning at 11:00 a.m. eastern, normal business in the house of representatives has been postponed for the coming week. capitol police urged members of congress to take reasonable and prudent precautions. they'll be briefed on security wednesday. the fbi does not believe the shooting was part of a wider plot. congresswoman gabrielle giffords represents arizona's 8th district. it's in the southeast corner of the state. giffords, a democrat, was just elected to a third term following a tough campaign. she's faced threats and heckling

for her support of immigration and health care reform. her office was vandalized last year. giffords was one of 20 democrats whose districts were put in crosshairs on sarah palin's website. as we reported, she's married to astronaut mark kelly. he's scheduled to command the shuttle "endeavour" when it launches in april. the motivation behind the shooting remains unclear this morning. at jared lee loughner's home investigators found an envelope with the words "my assassination" and giffords' name. investigators are trying to determine if he was connected to an online group known for white supremacist and anti-immigration. loughner was suspended for community college for disruptive behavior. one of his classmates wrote, in an e-mail to friends, he's one of those whose picture you see on the news after he has come into class with an automatic weapon, she wrote. everyone interviewed would say, yeah, he was in my math class. and he was really weird. officials say the attack could have been worse if not for the efforts of several people who grabbed the gunman. as sandra mentioned earlier, six

people were killed, including a federal judge. they were all attending a political event, and all ended up caught in the cross fire. 63-year-old federal judge john roll was a longtime friend of giffords'. he arrived at the event after attending saturday church services. >> he was a wise and compassionate and generous jurist. one of those people that you meet in your life who didn't have an enemy. >> reporter: gabe zimmerman was a communication staffer for congresswoman giffords. >> he was a 30-year-old guy who was wise beyond his years, and dedicated and loyal and determined. he was there to help people. >> reporter: 76-year-old dorwin stoddard died in the arms of his wife. she was also wounded in the melee. >> when he dove down to take her out of the way, he fell on her, and he died about seven minutes after he was shot, and she was talking to him and trying to console him and comfort him. and yes, she knew he was dead before they took her to the hospital.

>> reporter: dorothy morris was also 76. she was in line for the event with her high school sweetheart and husband george. he's in critical condition. dorothy was killed. and 79-year-old phyllis schneck. the new jersey grandmother had retired to arizona to escape the cold winters back east. while not especially politically active she wanted to meet the congresswoman. and the youngest victim was a 9-year-old girl. she had an interest in politics, and had just been elected to her school student council. john blackstone has christina green's story. ♪ >> reporter: from the children's choir at church, to a tucson little league field, one young face was missing, 9-year-old christina taylor green. the youngest person to die in this american tragedy was also born on a day of tragedy, september 11th, 2001. her father, john green. >> she was born, and she left us

in very tragic moments in united states' history here. her life wasn't all like that. >> reporter: christina's picture was one of those in a book of babies born on 9/11. called "faces of hope." and christina's life was filled with dreams. >> very intelligent. she had lots of thoughts on what she was going to do in the future. being a veterinarian. a politician. an artist. she wanted to play professional baseball. >> reporter: baseball runs in christina's family. her father is a scout for the los angeles dodgers, her grandfather is dallas green, who pitched in the major leagues and is a former manager of the philadelphia phillies. christina was the only girl mike coached on his little league team. >> i can think of times that she hit the ball during games, and you look at her face, and her smile, and now, we don't get to do that anymore. >> reporter: she was interested in politics, too.

parts of atlanta sunday, include being the airport. snow is covering much of the southeast. earlier, heavy snow fell from arkansas to colorado. and there are also freezing rain and freezing rain and sleet in other parts of the south. the storm could reach the northeast later this week. on the "cbs moneywatch," stocks in asia headed south this morning. ashley morrison is here in new york with more. good morning to you. >> good morning, terrell. most asian markets lost ground today. hong kong's hang seng shed more than half a percent while japan's nikkei is closed for a national holiday. this week wall street gets another round of earnings and new reports on inflation, retail sales and consumer sentiment. last week stocks finished with gains for the sixth week in a row. the dow gained almost 1%, while the nasdaq was up nearly 2%. friday's jobs report was another case of good news/bad news. the unemployment rate fell to 9.4%, and more than 100,000 new jobs were created, but the rate dropped largely because so many left the workforce or stopped looking.

for every 100 people who are unemployed in november, just 18 found work by december, and 20 left the labor force. crude oil prices are expected to climb following a leak at transalaska pipeline. it was shut down on saturday after the leak was discovered. the 800 mile long pipeline carries about 15% of u.s. crude oil output. meantime, gas prices are rising. according to the lundberg survey, the average price of a gallon of regular is now $3.08. that's up 9 cents over the past three weeks. the chicago area has the highest. salt lake city has the lowest. well, iphone fans are about to get another carrier option. tomorrow verizon is expected to announce they'll begin offering service for the apple product by the end of the month. till now, if you wanted an iphone, you had to subscribe to at&t. verizon will reportedly also

offer unlimited data plans. at&t dropped its unlimited option last summer. and at the movies, a western win. the remake of "true grit" wrangled the top spot with $15 million in sales. it's now taken more than $100 million. the first western movie since the 1990s. shooting. only days on the job, 20-year-old daniel hernandez rushed to representative gabrielle giffords. he was the first to give her medical attention. last night, he spoke with cbs' russ mitchell. >> you're at the event. you hear gunshots, what did you do next? >> i was about 30 to 40 feet away around the corner, helping sign people in for the event, so i tried to rush towards where the congresswoman would be. >> when you got to the congresswoman, what condition was she in? what did you do? >> when i got to the congresswoman, there was a few other people who were down, so the first thing i did was to check pulses, and see if they were still breathing. i was able to check two or three people before i got to the congresswoman and i noticed the severity of her injuries. it looked like she had been hit in the head. so she then became my top priority. so the first thing i did was to try and get her up so that she wasn't slumped over, in any danger of breathing in her own blood, because she was bleeding profusely.

the next thing i did was to make sure that i applied pressure to her wound to try and stem the flow of blood. >> daniel, we have a picture of you holding congresswoman giffords' hand as she's being taken away on the stretcher. during the time you were with her, what did you say to her? and did she say anything to you? >> she wasn't talking to me at that time. however, she was communicating by squeezing my hand when i would ask her a question. but the main thing i was trying to do, after the emts came in was to try and give her some comfort and try and just let her know that someone was with her. >> understand. it has obviously been a very emotional 24 hours for you. how are you doing? how is the congresswoman's staff doing? >> i'm doing well. as best as can be expected with the type of things that happened over the last 24 hours. but, just really saddened by the people who are still wounded. not just the staff, but also the other victims who were constituents of congresswoman giffords. and the staff is doing as well as can be expected with what's been happening over the last day.

deadly shooting in tucson has many wondering whether the angry political climate of recent years could have given rise to that attack. nancy cordes takes a closer look at the rhetoric, from washington. >> it's been a much angrier, confrontational environment over the last two or three years. >> they say i'm right, and you're evil. >> both sides are guilty of this. >> reporter: there is no shortage of recent examples. nevada republican sharron angle spoke of taking up arms against the government. >> people are really looking toward those second amendment remedies. >> reporter: florida democrat allen grayson likened his opponent to the taliban. >> taliban dan webster. >> reporter: and west virginia senator joe manchin fired a rifle at legislation he didn't like. isn't it kind of extreme to be

firing a gun when you're talking about anyone's agenda? >> in west virginia, if you don't know how to shoot a gun and handle a gun, you probably shouldn't be running for office. >> reporter: congresswoman giffords was one of many who called for an end to the violent imagery. >> when people do that you've got to realize there's consequences to that action. >> reporter: her fellow arizonan congressman raul grijalva has himself received death threats. >> i think the, you know, those disc jockeys and commentators that make a living off of and a rating off of how much hate and anger they can generate over the airwaves, i think they need to stop and pause and see how they contribute to it. >> reporter: radio host, tammy bruce who calls herself -- >> -- with a gun and a microphone. >> reporter: was granted an interview this weekend by a top aide to sarah palin. who talked about palin's now infamous campaign website which placed crosshairs on 20 democratic districts, including giffords'.
