thanks for joining us on this friday. i'm betty nguyen. we want to begin with the tucson shooting. the federal judge who was killed in the rampage will be buried today. meanwhile gabrielle giffords continues to make remarkable progress and may pass another medical milestone as early as today. sandra hughes is in tucson. what's the latest there? >> reporter: well, good morning, betty. yesterday this church behind me was filled with 2,000 mourners for the first of many funerals that will be held here in tucson. again today it's going to be filled with sadness while not very far from here, there is good news to report about congresswoman giffords. congresswoman gabrielle giffords could soon take the next big step on her long road to recovery. >> she's becoming more and more alert at this time period. >> reporter: as early as today, doctors hope to remove her breathing tube and possibly even sit her up in a chair. the team of physicians performed intense physical therapy on giffords thursday, sitting her

up in bed and dangling her feet over the side. the congresswoman remains in critical condition, but is now opening both eyes, moving both legs and arms, and responding to family and friends. >> this is a major milestone for her and we're hoping that she crosses through many more. >> reporter: her medical team is calling her progress so far nothing short of miraculous. only 10% of people who are shot in the head even survive. >> miracles happen every day and in medicine we like to very much attribute them to either what we do or others do around us, but a lot of medicine is outside of our control and we're wise to acknowledge miracles. >> we have a caller who believes that gabrielle giffords was shot. >> reporter: it was just six days ago giffords and more than a dozen others were gunned down outside this grocery store. newly released police recordings captured the frantic scene. >> customers have tackled the suspect. they're holding him down at the safeway. >> how many victims do we have? >> there are multiple victims. >> we have a lot more units here.

>> reporter: today funeral services will be held for another victim in the attack, federal judge john roll will be laid to rest. now, nasa has announced a replacement for giffords' husband's position. he's the commander of a shuttle mission that is supposed to take place in april, but right now, that is just for the training portion of the mission. mark kelly is saying that he is hoping he is going to be able to rejoin that mission. betty. >> all right, sandra hughes in tucson for us this morning. thank you so much for that report. the youngest victim of the tucson shooting, christina green, was buried thursday. thousands gathered for an emotional service. john blackstone has that part of the story. >> reporter: the 9-year-old girl who was born on september 11th, 2001 was carried to her funeral beneath a flag that survived the world trade center attack that day. a symbol of both tragedy and resilience.

the service for christina green was private, but in death, she's become a public figure. while christina has touched the nation, for the hundreds lining the route to her funeral, she is tucson's child. >> i pray every night that she'll be in a happy place and that she's with god now. >> reporter: among the tributes at christina's school is one from her little league team where she was the only girl. >> we're all trying to process this. >> reporter: dave briton brought six of his seven boys, isaac was in the third grade with christina. >> and she's the same age as me. and it's just sad. >> reporter: along with the sadness, there is also a new fear. >> a little scared? >> yeah. could have been me or any of my brothers. >> reporter: since the shooting, kelly has been holding her 7-year-old twins closer than ever. >> it's sad to see that you just

go to a grocery store and your kids could be killed. it's horrible. >> reporter: here at christina green's funeral, we learned of yet another way she touched lives as an organ donor. john blackstone, cbs news, tucson. michelle obama has written an open letter to parents urging them to talk to their children about the tucson shooting. mrs. obama says, quote, the questions my daughters have asked are the same ones many of your children will have. but they will provide an opportunity for us as parents to teach some valuable lessons about the character of our country, about the values we hold dear, and about finding hope at a time when it seems far away. investigators are learning more about shooting suspect jared loughner. a black bag authorities believe loughner had the morning of the attack was found near his home. inside was the same type of ammunition used in the shooting. cbs news has confirmed loughner stayed at this motel the night before the shooting.

police reports from the community college loughner attended describe him as creepy and very hostile. loughner's parents were told he would have to undergo a mental health exam before he could return to class. >> they need as much help as everybody else that's involved with the shooting. i hope no one would blame them for what happened. >> authorities say loughner was carrying a knife the day of the attack but didn't use it. more rain is expected today in flood ravaged southeastern brazil. rescuers were able to save this woman thursday, but not her dog. thousands have been trapped or left homeless by the raging waters and mudslides. nearly 500 people have been killed, but that number is expected to rise. some areas got ten inches of rain just in the past 24 hours. on the cbs "moneywatch," a mixed day for stocks in asia. ashley morrison here in new york with the latest.

>> reporter: good morning. it was a slow day for asian markets. the nikkei lost nearly 1% while the hang seng gained a fraction. today wall street gets the latest on retail sales and inflation. on thursday, stocks took a step back on disappointing news on the labor front. the dow lost 23 points while the nasdaq gave back two. the tech industry got a big boost after the closing bell when intel reported profits jumped nearly 50% last quarter. more than 1 million pcs are sold every day, but the industry as a whole is bracing for a decline as tablet computers, especially the ipad, and smart phones take an increasingly bigger chunk of the business. the tax filing deadline is right around the corner and now there's an app for that. turbotax unveiled its new iphone app snap tax on thursday. it allows taxpayers who file a 1040 ez to file their returns right on their phone. the process takes about 30 minutes. you can download the app for

free, but there's a $15 charge to file your return. meantime, some americans will be getting their refunds on plastic this year. the irs says low income taxpayers who don't have bank accounts will be able to get their money on prepaid debit cards supplied by the government. the cards can be used to get cash from atms, pay bills, or to shop. and next time you're on an overbooked flight, you may find yourself in a bidding war. delta air lines is turning its voluntary seat bumping procedure in to an auction. passengers can bid online telling delta how much they're willing to accept in travel vouchers if they get squeezed off their flight. delta says it will go with the lowest bidders first. and that's a pretty good idea. it will kind of prevent all that chaos at the gate there. >> we hope so. all right. ashley, thank you so much for that. joining us live here in new york. just ahead on the "morning news," we want to tell you about a touching act of kindness by an airline pilot.

the opening of the spiderman musical on broadway is being delayed again. the production was supposed to open in december, but a series of accidents in preview performances forced repeated postponements. the show's producers say this is the last one. the new opening? march 15th. also known as the ides of march. proposals for healthier school lunches are on the government's menu this morning. that's because a third of all american school age kids are overweight or obese. michelle miller has the story. >> reporter: in the losing fight against childhood obesity, the federal government wants to enlist the lunch ladies in the battle. >> we know there's too much sodium and too much saturated fat and this is a way of responding to those concerns.

>> reporter: the usda's proposed guidelines will for the first time limit calories according to age group, decrease servings of starchy vegetables. and cut sodium levels in half. it doubles fruits and vegetables and requires 50% of all breads and cereals be whole grain. so instead of hot dogs in a bun with raw veggies, whole wheat pasta with meat sauce and three cooked vegetables. >> why are these string beans sitting there on the plate? >> because i eat them last. >> oh, really. >> reporter: will kids fall in line? >> vegetables, nobody really eats them. >> reporter: but it's possible. the cambridge, massachusetts school district changed its meal plan and in three years 40% of overweight kids dropped to a healthy weight. >> they're more alert, more awake. >> reporter: all across the country, 32 million students eat school lunches five days a week. 11 million eat breakfast, too. the challenge?

making those healthier meals affordable. will this increase the cost? >> i would think it would because you're talking about fresh foods, therefore, they have less of a shelf life. >> reporter: but with kids consuming half of their daily calories at school, supporters say the cost, whatever it may be, is worth it. michelle miller, cbs news, hackensack, new jersey. an arizona man is praising an airline pilot who held a jetliner at the gate so he could reach his dying grandson in time to say good-bye. mark dickinson thought he'd missed his flight. instead he found the pilot waiting for him and wishes he could have thanked him properly. >> i would have just told him, you know, i can't thank you enough for doing what you did, you know. it means a lot to me, it means a lot to my daughter. and i would have told him that i got a chance to be there and see my grandson. >> the pilot has not been

identified, but southwest says it supports his action. nfl hall of famer lawrence taylor won't be going to jail after pleading guilty to misdemeanor sex charges. taylor was arrested last may near new york city after being with an underage prostitute. yesterday the judge dropped that charge, but taylor must register as a sex offender and faces six years probation. straight ahead, your friday morning weather. and in sports, magic and thunder on the court, almost 250 points scored. but the winning margin was just one. visiting orlando was tough. dwight howard scored 39 points with 18 rebounds, but durant's 36 and westbrook's 32 carried the night as the thunder beat the magic 125-124. in denver, carmelo anthony and the nuggets thumped the visiting heat with lebron james and his sprained ankle nowhere to be seen. denver's j.r. smith scored a game high 28 points as the nuggets made it look easy, 130-102. in minneapolis, the timberwolves knocked it in to the wrong hoop. but in the end, they won 109-97. finally, cam newton is headed to the pros. the heisman winning quarterback led auburn to the national championship on monday. now he has declared himself eligible for the nfl draft. when we return, another look at this morning's top stories. and protecting politicians. one lawmaker's fight to allow

reflected in the seating at his state of the union address this month. democratic senator mark udall of colorado is proposing that democratic and republican lawmakers sit side by side instead of in separate sections in a gesture of good will. meanwhile, members of congress are looking at ways to bolster their own security. one republican representative says firearms on the floor may be the answer. joel brown reports. >> reporter: we walked the halls of congress with a lawmaker who wants to bring gun rights back to the capitol. >> in the early days of congress, they had weapons on the floor. guns, canes. >> reporter: texas republican louie gohmert is writing a bill to allow members of congress to carry guns in washington, even on the house floor. >> hey, we have no security detail and we're not asking for one. we're not a bunch of weaklings. >> reporter: since the shooting that left gabrielle giffords fighting for her life, democrats have been pushing to tighten gun laws.

>> at a minimum i believe we must promptly restore the expired federal ban on extended magazine clips. i personally would urge us also to re-enact the 1994 ban on assault weapons. >> reporter: the senate sergeant in arms used to be a d.c. police officer. he doesn't like the idea of pistol packing lawmakers. >> i don't think that's a good idea. i know that upsets a lot of folks. i'm not getting in to a second amendment issue. but i don't think more guns is the answer. >> reporter: washington, d.c. has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation and bans concealed weapons. gohmert wants to exempt lawmakers from those laws. joel brown, cbs news, washington. don't look now, but the latest viral video is every subway rider's worst nightmare. a large rat is seen running around the inside of a new york city subway number 4 train. and it gets worse. the rat eventually climbs up the leg of a passenger and actually wakes him. now -- there he goes.

what a sight. in new york harbor, fireworks to celebrate a meeting of the queens thursday night. the queen mary ii, queen victoria, and the new queen elizabeth met on the hudson. it was a celebration to mark the maiden voyage of the new ship. next week, an historic day in presidential history. the 50th anniversary of president kennedy's inauguration. on thursday, president kennedy's library made history by becoming the first to make all of its documents available online. wyatt andrews has more. >> reporter: perhaps more than any president before him -- >> the torch has been passed to a new generation of americans. >> reporter: -- john kennedy connected with younger americans.
