notarangelo. a week after the tragic events in tucson, the healing begins. >> thank you so much. safeway shoppers and workers paused before the store's reopening for a moment of silence much it was in tribute to the six people shot to death a week ago today and the 13 people who were wounded. meanwhile there was more good news about congresswoman gabrielle giffords as she recovers from a gunshot to the head. today doctors have removed her from a breathing apparatus and say she is breathing on her own. >> this is pipa community college one of the biggest scams in america. this is a police station. this is where the whole shaboozy goes down with illegal activity. this is genocide in america. thank you. this is jared from -- pima.

jared lee loughner walks the college at pipa community college narrating his dislike of the school, teachers and students. he was suspended after shooting that video. in tucson one week after the shooting rampage thousands of people turned out at the pipa county fairgrounds for a gun show. flags outside flew at half- staff. gun advocates defending their right to bare arms. >> reporter: those attending the gun show here said they saw no connection to legal access to handguns and tragedy in arizona. meanwhile, many of those who are advocating more gun control are also looking at that tragedy t promote it. >> hold the trigger with this

end and... >> reporter: john kellyly enjoys a sport called cowboy action shooting. he says the tucson carnage is being used by gun control advocates to try to take away his gun. >> there is a whole bunch of people that do not want anybody to own guns, do not like guns. do not think anybody should own a gun and want to take away guns from everybody regardless and they are using it as an exexcuse. in the wake of arizona tragedy members of congress are talking about such things as making it a federal crime to carry a gun within 1000 feet of a member of congress. mandatory background checks at gun shows and banning the sale of gun clips or magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. >> it will make a difference. >> reporter: but some political an cysts say gun control is no longer a high profile issue among democrats. an effective truce in the gun control battles allow the assault weapons ban to expire

and to align with the gun allies. gabrielle giffords is said to own a glock 9, the same one that shot her. >> we have rifles hanging in our office inside the capitol. and so we believe in our 2nd commandment right. it is a tragedy what happened in arizona. i think he was a crazy individual. but i think we have a right to carry, keep and bear arms. >> reporter: certainly we had responses of these shooting tragedies in the past and always seems one side sun able to persuade the other. >> politicians across the country are re-examining their own security in light of gabrielle giffords' shooting. east bay congressman saying there has to be a balance between safety and access and local authorities should be involved. >> i need to be able to reach out to the community. i need to be able to communicate with people. whether i agree with them or

not or they agree with me or not i need to hear from my constituents. and anything that would make that more difficult is going to be a problem. >> conthe -- he still wants his constituents to feel comfortable when meeting him. murder at a popular tourist spot in san francisco early this morning. a 24-year-old was at the twin peaks vista point with friends. there was an argument with another group and shots were fired. the victim was shot several times and died at the scene. police are looking for two or three men in a white honda odyssey or a similar van. and in bay point a 17 year old has been killed and two others wounded in a shooting in a residential neighborhood. a 15 and 20 year old were injured in the gunfire near the 200 block of riverside drive. this after 11 last night. police have made no arrests and are still trying to piece together what happened. it was the second homicide in

bay point in 24 hours. teenager and adult shot in a suspected gang shooting in fruitvale are recovering tonight. they were shot yesterday afternoon. this is the same neighborhood where gang violence has prompted city leaders to seek an ininjunction against such activity. the judge's decision is still pending. stopping violence in oakland is going to be a big job but some residents are determined to do it block by block. how cleaning up the streets sometimes requires some cleaning.. >> the spirit of the citizens and residents of oakland that says we can make this the safest place in the country. >> reporter: right now it is far from it. this neighborhood has seen about a dozen shootings in just the past two weeks. >> at night we don't go out. we just stay home.

>> this neighboro neighborhood has gone down and it needed a cleaning up. >> reporter: and mayor quan says this will make it safer. the broken window theory. >> where public abuse of facilities and where there is garbage that people think people don't care. >> save a life not take a life. >> reporter: a few blocks from the mayor a more vocal crowd. >> we are sick and tired of our young people dying in the streets. >> reporter: they do this every saturday and are glad to have the help. >> everybody who is out on the block right now telling the community we want the violence to stop. >> reporter: but a few blocks from there skeptisism. >> seems like it is just for show. >> the place is kind of clean today maybe because you guys are here. >> reporter: curbsides like this one on walter street in east oakland have lon -- long been known as dumping grounds. >> we have seen nickel bags and

condoms. there is prostitution and drug dealing going on. >> reporter: picking up the garbage and hoping it won't return. >> if people were more dedicated it wouldn't be as bad a neighborhood as people say. >> reporter: cbs5. >> mayor quan will join san francisco mayor ed lee at a white house state dinner honoring's china's president. the fact that two asians are leading the bay area are not going unnoticed internationally. the two will make the trip to washington together. memories of a myrrh myrrh -- miracle. >> they became homeless after a new year's fire. why a bay area mayor is getting involved to find them shelter. i'm meteorologist lawrence karnow. we will talk about the weather coming up. ,,,,,,,,,,,,

sullenberger from danville. he he retired last year and in an interview he said his gratitude for what happened has increased. >> for everyone on the airplane and their families i think we have gained a greater appreciation for what we were able to accomplish that day for what happened that day and for what didn't happen that day. we are all very grateful. >> he is writing a book and has used his fame to lobby for airline safety. it has been two weeks since flames were sent from a san francisco apartment. it gutted a building at montgomery and pacific displacing four dozen people. the landlord said the power had been out and someone may have been using a candle. today ed lee said the tenants had been placed in temporary housing at a nearby hotel. >> they will be there for a little while. they are existing on red cross and city funded vouchers and we

will extend those to the extent that we can to make sure that their temporary housing needs are met. >> the mayor said it is important that the building be rebuilt quickly because there is so little affordable housing available. he urged tenants to clear out their belongings, insurers to expedite settlements and the city to issue building permits quickly. the devastated neighborhood in san bruno is ready to rebuild. the pipeline explosion in september killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. well, now the first of the residents has filed plans to rebuild. their home was at 1710 clairemont drive just feet from the source of the explosion. the city is fast tracking the permit process even wave waiving some of the fees to help the family break ground by spring. for some residents you do your best healing at home and this is home. finally some payoff after all those weekends of rain. lawrence has the pinpoint forecast next. barking from behind a wall.

four-year-old puppy stuck inside the wall. it isn't clear how long he has been trapped or how he got there but he was dehydrated and very hungry. i love his name. he has been nicknamed wally. hopefully somebody takes him out for a good walk if that's what he needs right now. season that great. >> what else could you call him? wally. that is very cute. >> i like your forecast too. keep it coming. >> a lot of people do and then people get worried. you get that break in the rains and of course we had the tremendous amount of rains running above normal for this time of year but pretty typical. we usually get a mid-season dry spell in winter. so, for example, don't panic we have got more rain on the way. we are enjoying mostly clear skies around the bay area. mostly over the city in san francisco. patchy fog showing up in some of the spots. keeping things very cool in some areas inland today. in fact, concord only checking in at 50 degrees. they are socked into the fog. in the meantime though we do have some pretty nice weather. high pressure sitting across

the state. had that weak offshore flow and brought some fog back in through the bay. and kept those temperatures cooler inland. we will start off with patchy fog. a little more sunshine as we head into the afternoon. with any luck we should clear up places like concord and into fairfield. 50s to 60s in a lot of spots. temperatures running in the 50s coast side. should be mostly sunny. just a little cool out toward the beaches. it is still very cool in concord right now. 46 degrees there. 57 degrees though in livermore. got 60s elsewhere today. kind of a variety of temperatures. high pressure overhead. that weak offshore flow down below much as we look towards tomorrow patchy dense fog in through the central valley but that should begin to lift as we head head through the day. high country looking good. if you want to get out there to do some skiing. partly cloudy skies. 10% chance of a few showers heading into the afternoon but doesn't look like a real big deal. better chance of rain in far northern california. high pressure sitting overhead. you've got a weak system riding

over the top of this ridge. weak but may be just strong enough to actually change the wind direction just a little bit. so we see a little less fog and not seeing that offshore flow heading into tomorrow. i think pretty mild day for most of the bay area. those places that did see the fog of course you'll see some cooler temperatures outside. starting out tomorrow morning you've got clouds early on. and overnight lows down into the 40s in many spots. but as we in to the afternoon we will squeeze in some sunshine and temperatures not that bad. plan on some mild weather. 63 in palo alto. how about this? east bay temperatures starting out with patchy dense fog early on by the afternoon. 64234 pleasant hill. 62 livermore. 59 in richmond. north bay looking good. down slope winds into the santa rosa area if that happens. let's be conservative. 64 in santa rosa. could get warmer than that. they had a high today of 70 degrees. all right. as we look ought over the next

we were the first to ban smoking on airplanes. the first to have smoke-free bars and restaurants. all while saving over $86 billion in health care costs... and over a million lives. we've done a good job. but even if you were born today, you'd still grow up in a world where tobacco kills more people... than aids, drugs, alcohol, murder and car crashes... combined. we have a lot more work to do.

steelers and ravens were meeting for the third time... both of they say good things come in threes. while the steelers an ravens were meeting for the first time most games were decided by three points and terrell suggs referred to today's game as world war iii. the terrible towels were waving early on. pittsburgh was up 7-0 late in the 1st. big ben gets hit as he throws and it appears to be an incompletion. but while suggs is celebrating his teammate cory redding realizes the whistle never blew, he picks up the loose ball and runs it in for a touchdown. replay confirmed it was a fumble. baltimore would lead 21-7 at the half. a lead that wouldn't last long. the ravens turn it over three times in the third quarter leading to 17 points for the

steelers. baltimore was held to just 126 total yards and flaco was sacked. the steelers are inside the five. ben roethlisberger throwing for 226 yards and two touchdowns. three plays later. steelers on top for good with a second touchdown for this player. final chance for the ravens 4th and 18. joe flacco has an open receiver but t.j. drops it. that's your ballgame. the steelers win 31-24. they are headed to the afc championship game. >> we found a way to win and what better way than to beat baltimore and put them out of the tournament. they asked for us. they keep asking for us. sometimes my mom always said be careful what you ask for. seems like every time we get in the playoffs they keep wanting to play us and at the end of the day they have got to worry

about this loss the whole off season. we can only hope the game is as good as the trash talk this week between the patriots and jets. >> this is about bill belichick versus rex ryan. there is no question. >> may have a little quickness on him. he has probably got a little more strength and power on me. >> so he is going to get everything i have on sunday. if he flips at all we will beat him. >> in my opinion it will never change that. at the end of the day it will be what it is going to be. >> you can't just stick your toe in the water you've got to jump right in. he has got great feet. he moves around really well. really us going out there and being good foot soldiers. >> anything goes and i can take it. i'm not going to discuss it but i can take it. >> you can see the jets an patriots right here on cbs5 tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. stay tuned after the game for the 5th quarter.

lebron james decision to sign with the heat ended up having a huge impact on the warriors because had he stayed in cleveland, durell wright may have never brought his talents to the bay area. >> i'm doing whatever it takes. leaving it all on the court playing hard and showing everybody what i can do. >> warriors fans had no idea what wright could do when he signed with the team last summer. in six seasons with the heat, wright averaged just over six points per game. >> my role was a solid shooter in the corner and defending rebounding wasn't really contributing on offense and here i'm able to do a little more. >> the 25 year old is now in the conversation to win the nba's most improved player award. wright has made more threes than anyone in the nba upping his scoring average and has become one of one of the team's most reliable player.
