embarrassment to his father when he was alive, and today he became an embarrassment to his mother. there's no love lost between the two of you. pretty strong statement, though. >> well, it needed to be a strong statement because reality is, all these years i've listened to people like bill maher an other people on the left who inferred my father had alzheimer's when he was president of the united states to somehow discount the great job my father did as president. now for one of his sons to come out and, in fact, say yeah, he might have add alzheimer's or he had alzheimer's just gives credence to people like bill maher and others and it absolutely offends me that somebody would say that when there's no evidence anywhere on the planet to back it up. >> and your brother has said this is just his own feeling. no one else is saying it to him. he also doesn't think it would take away from your father's legacy at all if, in fact, that would have been the case. you seem to differ on that. you feel that it would have an effect on his legacy. could it be possible there may have been something else? could he have had dementia? >> no, he didn't have dementia.

look what he accomplished in the last four years of his presidency. reykjavik, s.t.a.r.t. agreements, all the things he accomplished. the speech at the berlin wall in 1987 on june 12th. look what he accomplished on his last four years. someone with dementia does not accomplish all of those things. and it's interesting that ron says this because we don't even know in the family if ron voted for his father back in 1981 or in 1984 when he ran for president of the united states of america. this is the first time i heard he even watched the debate with mondale. >> and you were sort of shaking your head during that piece that he referenced that debate -- >> he might have voted for mondale. >> but would that have any effect on whether -- >> i don't know. i have no idea. my father did not have dementia. the fact that he was overloaded with facts and figures, everybody said that at the time. the next debate, he took mondale to the cleaners on that one. and the rest is history. he ran -- won the biggest

>> yeah, pretty cool. >> doesn't get much better than this. >> you just made her day. marysol, thanks. tongues are wagging on both sides of the pond as soon-to-be princess kate middleton has finally settled on a designer for her wedding gown. it apparently who is a favorite of princess diana. here with the very latest is our royals expert victoria arbiter. great to have you back with us. >> good to be here. >> everyone wants to know who will she be wearing. we did get a little bit of a clue. >> a little bit of a clue. there's still been no official word from buckingham palace. but carol middleton and sister were spotted in bruce's boutique over the weekend. >> and he has a great connection to princess diana. >> he does. he does. bruce oldfield was given up by his parents for adoption as a child and he went into the care of dr. bernardo which is a charity that takes care of orphans in the welfare system. diana was patron saint or patron
8:35 am
of bernardo's. that's a lovely connection for william. he's keeping diana's presence felt however he can. also an interesting tidbit about bruce oldfield. in 2008 he redesigned the uniform for mcdonald's. william always wanted to keep things down to earth and in touch with regular folk. so i think it doesn't get much more down to earth than that. >> would you put your money on him as the designer? >> i think pretty close. definitely would have been encouraged to go with a british designer. but she also does get to choose a designer that's going to be appropriate for her. bruce's designs really suit kates figure. she's tall. she's got that supermodel body. >> is there anything she can't wear? >> yes. she's going to look good in anything she wears. vivien westwood was talked about in the beginning. she's a phenomenal designer but very avant-garde. she did design helena bonham carter's dress at the golden globes last night. not really that regal. >> probably not the reaction you're going for for your wedding dress. those are the goods on the dress. we'll keep watch. in terms of where they're going to live. the queen recently said or i
8:36 am
read that she's perhaps offering up some space in buckingham palace. this is all about london crash pad. because they won't be living in london. >> they're going to be based in north wales because william is in the midst of a three-year tour as a royal air force search and rescue pilot. he's going to need to be at the base pretty much most of the time. they are going to have a few royal engagements, visit london, family, friends, get away from wales a little bit. buckingham palace is an option. i don't think it's going to end up being the place they base themselves. it's not very private. buckingham palace, if you will, is like royal headquarters. it's teeming with staff. there's a lot going on. they're going to want a little more privacy than that. so in the long-term i would imagine kensington palace. >> really? it does have a soft spot. >> it was the home of princess diana. kensington palace is a lot more practical. it's very private. the number one concern is going to be security. but they also need to keep
8:37 am
photographers at bay. kensington palace has a couple of different entrances and exits. diana was able to get out any number of different exits while photographers were waiting at one gate. >> and there is a lot of concern as we've been talking about over security and kate not being hounded in the way that princess diana was. >> that's right. >> i'm sure that will be a concern as they move forward. there's also talk of, we don't even need wetting gifts, just make a charitable donation instead. which is a really nice move on their part. >> i really hope this is an accurate report. not only is it a fantastic way to give back it's going to endure this new young royal couple to the british public. this wedding is so enormous in its scale. even though they're trying to keep things very low-key. you can't help but see that it's going to be a huge occasion. so this year, or in previous years everyone's kind of holding onto their pennies and so charity has seen a real dip in donations. so with these type of foreign dignitaries that are coming, the vips coming, they could raise an
8:38 am
enormous sum of money and to be able to give that back and raise the profile of their charities would be incredible. >> they probably don't need that much. 6,000 wedding gifts for princess diana and prince charles? >> yes. and 6,000 wedding gifts, where on earth do you put them all? a lot of them wouldn't have been their taste and you can't really put them up on ebay. >> can you imagine writing thank you notes for all of those? it would be exhausting. finally before we let you go, the title. everybody wants to know what everyone will be called after the wedding. she'll be a princess. correct? >> she will. kate will arrive at westminster abbey a commoner but she will leave, her royal highness, the princess william of wales. >> not princess catherine? >> no. she literally takes her husband's entire name. most people just take the last name. she will take the whole name. it's possible the queen will bestow william a dukedom in which point they'll be duke and duchess of something. we don't know what yet. that would be a gift from the queen, it is at her discretion. and that will be given on the
8:39 am
wedding day itself. >> okay. >> i'm sure the press are going to reduce kate's name somewhat because it's such a mouthful and words are a hot commodity. we went from princess diana became princess di. so i would imagine princess kate is going to stick around. >> plus there's so much sweeting, you have to keep it short. victoria arbiter, thanks. chris, over to you. >> erica, let's make sure we hold off on the monogrammed gift. all right. the stars weren't the only thing shining at last night's golden globe awards. the gleaming smiles of all those actors and actresses always seem to add extra sparkle to their great look. maggie gallant is here to show you how to get that hollywood smile. good morning. >> good morning. >> so we've got a number of items that are before us right now. we're going to, i guess timing is key. if you have a lot of time you're going to start here. we've got everything that takes you a couple hours to stuff that takes you a couple of minutes. >> seconds, exactly. you want to think about budget, too. the first thing is everyone knowles that white strips work. crest has really led the way
8:40 am
with the whitening products that you can get, even at the drugstore. the active ingredient is peroxide. so you want to make sure you talk to your dentist first before you make any choices even at the drugstore. but they've recognized our need for instant gratification and you can do the strips and see a difference in two hours. >> these are for both men and women, of course. all the items we have here for both men and women if they want their teeth white. the question i have, they are proven that they do work pretty well? >> they do. dentists recommend them. even if you do an in-office procedure. this is a great way to maintain the really white smile. in addition to the crest, there's other options. this one is about $50 and has four different applications. but two hours, you get that phone call you've got a job interview the next day, this is your pick. >> we want to bring that time down a little bit. what about this one? >> 30 minutes and you can't get to the dental office to use that light that they use in the office which really brings out the whitening detergent agents and the polish that they use, you can have it at home. it's a diy, do it yourself at
8:41 am
home, the only light that you can get at home that really works in 30 minutes. >> a little pricey, though? almost $200. >> it's a little under $200. there's a lot of steps but it's high tech. so it really makes you feel like you're doing something. >> it's like a phaser. come on, come on. here we go. 30 minutes of just standing around like this? >> exactly. and you look great doing that. >> it's a wonderful look. 30 minutes there. let's bring that time down a little bit. these look like lipstick. >> it is. you only have a few minutes. this is a great item. looks like a lip gloss and feels like a lip gloss. you apply it directly onto your teeth either with your finger or direct from the tube. it's really inexpensive. you have 30 different applications and within just a few minutes it's at least one or two shades lighter. just maintain that you don't eat or drink about two to five minutes afterwards. control yourself and you'll definitely look great. >> if you've had a little wine or something that's a little bit of a dark kind of ugly stain on your teeth you can get these to
8:42 am
take it right off? >> i love to keep these in my hand bag. they're $7 and they're great for if you've gone out and drinking coffee or read wine, someone pulls out the camera, duck out, wipe your teeth off. also helps with breath. each pad is infused with baking soda, calcium, which makes your teeth stronger. and you can use it to the side and use it fliek floss, also. >> and i guess that looks like lipstick. what is this? >> so, believe it or not, i know this is a big shock to you, when you pick out red lipstick as we saw a lot on the red carpet last night, it makes your teeth look whiter. the contrast between your lips and your teeth will make your teeth look whiter, especially if you pick a color that has blue undertones versus yellow. >> that really is lipstick then. >> it is lipstick. >> don't put that on your teeth. now you've got some toothpaste here. tom's is actually a pretty good seller. >> this is a sneak preview. this isn't on the market yet. it's coming out in april. when you talk about whitening people think about artificial chemicals and it makes people nervous. tom's of maine is jumping on the bandwagon with whitening.
8:43 am
it's a little more expensive but it uses a different element versus peroxide. it uses silica. it's not tested on animals. it's a little bit price ye but definitely worth it. >> it's not a good seller yet put hopes to be. >> it's not on the market. i think it's going to be a big one. >> and all the dentists will tell you flas. that's one way of keeping white teeth. >> absolutely. but these are infused with per oxize on the wax. so when you floss sometimes it's difficult to get the color in between the teeth so you have a more consistent look. >> and this is kind of the popular way to go. this is something that i did a couple years back. >> it's a great smile. so this is something you can get at the dental office. it's my tray that my father who is a dentist made for me. it is the gold standard. it's a little bit pricier. you have to go for repeated appointments for maintaining that. it allows for more consistent look and they can control the amount of peroxide. >> you can get the replacement gels. for 22% only about 20 minutes.
8:44 am
for the 16% it's overnight. >> that's a lot of numbers. >> exactly. exactly. >> and just finally here, these are the things, okay, if you had any doubts, stay away from the red wine, the sodas, the blueberries, things of that -- >> even white wine, too. >> that will stein your teeth. but these fruits and vegetables are great in the fight against stained teeth. if they're not in your quiet incorporate them into your diet because you won't need all the toothpastes if you just watch what you eat. maggie, thanks. for more on these products go to our website, earlyshow.cbsnews.com. all the information right there for you and your soon-to-be white teeth. now here's erica. >> chris, thanks. you may find it hard to believe but there are delicious foods you already love that can help you fight belly fat. lucy danziger is editor in chief of "self" magazine. here to tell us what those foods are and how they work. she's also going to clear up the mystery of blueberries based on the last segment. we have to wait a second. good to have you with us.
8:45 am
>> thanks for having me. >> i look across the table and these are all really delicious, yummy woods. >> we all made resolutions to get to the gym and not eat fast foods. when you eat the right foods you can eat a lot and you can get rid of that belly fat. >> i'm in. without doing all the effort. first one is avocado. we hear so much about avocado being a healthy fat. what's so good about it? >> your body needs fat. instead of using mayonnaise on your bread, try a little guacamole. because this has monosaturated fats which help your body keep that blood sugar nice and steady. so obviously you don't want too much fat. but half of an avocado with a little bit of dressing is a great way to get healthy fat. that's going to keep that blood sugar nice and low. >> you don't get too hungry, too tired. bananas also. >> okay. potassium is the anti-sodium. so if you're bloated and feeling a little puffy, have a banana, or half a banana and that's going to get rid of that bloat right away. >> i love that. >> celery works, too.
8:46 am
>> i'm obsessive with greek yogurt. i eat a lot of it. mainly it has such a high protein level. >> i happen to like this. some people like a smooth quality. when you have that in the morning that protein helps that nice, steady flood sugar all day long. >> for people who may just eat a different kind of yogurt, greek yogurt has high protein concert because it's strained which makes it so thick? >> what you want is the dense protein. what that's going to do is keep your blood sugar from going too high. if you have a sugary cereal for breakfast, or a pastry, your blood sugar goes way up, your insulin goes way up, if you're not going to go out and run around your body learns to store its afat. >> okay. >> so let's not do that. let's have the high protein. >> do i have to add -- i know a lot of people eat yogurts. if you have sort of a sugary yogurt in the morning. >> not as good. we say add berries. i tell my kids, this is nature's candy. you can have as much blueberry and strawberries as you like.
8:47 am
>> just brush your teeth afterwards so that they stay white. >> exactly. the good thing about this is it's full of antioxidants. when you do go and exercise or walk this is going to make all that oxygen go to the muscles so much easier, you're going to have a great workout and your blood sugar stays nice and 12eddy. >> keep it even and a little bit more energy. >> nature's blood sugar. nature's sugar is going to keep it steady. >> a little perhaps sugar, though, isn't so bad. you're saying we can have chocolate skim milk? i love you. >> i love chocolate. and after you work out, this is the perfect recovery food. because sometimes you get a little sore, maybe your muscles ache, you're tired. this is going to help them recover faster. you're going to feel great. >> what about chocolate and skim film helps me recover faster? >> it's the perfect combination of protein and carbs. and try to find one that's low in the sugar. >> okay. >> because that's really going to make the difference. you're not going to replace -- >> but not fake sugar. >> i like the kind that has a little less sugar added. >> it's chocolate milk. come on.

like we're going to turn our nose up at it. green tea once again. >> it has a special compound. it's called ecgc that helps rev the metabolism. people who drank three cups a day had their metabolism spike so that they're burning more calories and more fat all day long. >> time for me to switch from coffee. >> if you replace a couple of cups a day you're going to rev that metabolism. >> also citrus fruits and peppers. >> any vitamin c. they have found that this will help you burn 30% more fat. you're going to zap fat. >> when do i have to eat it? >> any time. >> any time? >> and i say women say to me i don't know what to bring with me as a snack. this is a perfect snack. put it right in your purse. it will keep for hours. >> and better to have this in the morning than say a glass of orange juice, right, because more fiber? >> exactly. and speaking of fiber, we want -- okay. look for a bread that has four grams. that's as much as -- >> four grams of fiber. and whole grains. >> yes, of course. but a lot of the labels will
8:49 am
boast all sorts of whole grains. four grams of fiber is it. and if you're going to have a sandwich or toast, that's the way to go. keeps you full. keeps the blood sugar nice and low and you will feel great. if you get to 35 grams of fiber a day. >> this has ten games. >> you are burning 6% more calories than if you didn't. just by sitting still. eat fiber. it's not just for old ladies. it's good stuff. >> there you go. i think that just sums it up perfectly. >> there you go. you can go to self.com and get recipes for all this. >> they're on our website as well at earlyshow.cbsnews.com. stay with us. we'll be right back. you're watch,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
