good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. two murders in 24 hours. in vallejo. and both victims found under similar circumstances. don knapp is in vallejo where police arrested one of the suspects in the latest murder. >> reporter: even tonight, police continue to work three crime scenes they say are associated with one of the murders and they say they have a suspect in custody which of course they are interrogating. . >> a woman saw a car she considered suspicious in her neighborhood about 5:00 a.m. and heard glass breaking and saw two men near the car an called police. when officers arrived they found a 27-year-old woman dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside a ford tempo. >> our officers arrived real shortly after that. about six minutes later, as they're rolling into the area, they see the two suspects walking away from the end of dublin. as soon as they saw the officers, they fled. >> reporter: police searched the neighborhood and found one of the men hiding in a yard behind a house.

and he is in custody. they're looking for the other man described as african- american, 25, with dread locks, wearing a t-shirt and jeans. just 24 hours earlier, another vallejo shooting took the life of 23-year-old enrique jimenez, about 5:00 a.m. friday, he was found dead with the white ford bronco on callahan near tennessee. it is believed he was waiting for a ride to work. >> we're investigating that as well. we have been working on that case today if it wasn't for this case that presented itself this morning. we don't have any further lead os than particular case. these two cases do not appear to be related. >> weeing that i we -- we thank you for the hope of eternal life and the wonderful grace of god that was at work in enrique's life. >> reporter: friends gathered and held a vigil to mourn, pray and praise the young man they say had turned away from gangs and was on a better course with his life. >> he turned his life all the

way around. from being somebody that nobody respected to somebody everybody loved. >> reporter: lieutenant ken weaver declined comment on unconfirmed reports that the woman killed today was killed elsewhere and brought to the neighborhood where she was found. >> don knapp in vallejo, thank you. a 9-year-old boy is recovering tonight after being shot in the stomach. it happened at turk street in the western addition around noon. police don't know if it is stray bullet or deliberate. it is not believing to be life- threatening. . another day of dead ends for a 4-year-old boy. searchers lift another vehicle from stanislaus county canal and it was not the one driven by the man who snatched the 4- year-old from his grandmother's arms but investigators are not giving up. >> it certainly means that there is still hope that we will find the boy alive.

and that has always been our goal. but it has been five days. and absent everything that brought us here to this canal, we don't have any other viable credible leads. >> the canal search will resume next week. searchers will focus farther downstream, in case the lightweight car was carried by the current. a teenager has been san jose's seventh homicide of the year. the suspect is also a teenager, just 17 years old. police are blaming this and other recent murders on gang activity. anne makovec on the steps the city is taking to prevent more violence. >> it is like a bull. you just see the color you're looking for and whoever has it. >> richard nichols knows. he used to be a gang member. now he helps to get kids out. and has an inside look at san jose's gang life. >> we have a lot of boys who are not in it all the way. they're just wearing the colors and hanging out. and they got nowhere else to go

and nothing else to do. >> reporter: and he attributes many of the city's seven murders so far this year to people who want to be members of the gangs, two of the biggest gangs in california. talked about today at a crime and gang prevention summit in san jose. >> there is a lot of anger from what has happened the first 20 days of this month. >> reporter: only three of the city's seven murders have been dubbed gang related so far. this busy intersection on story road and capital expressway was the scene of a murder on friday at rush hour. the victim was only 18 years old. the shooting suspect, 17. the suspect was arrested overnight. but now there is fear of retaliation. >> within the first 72 hours is the highest likelihood for row tallation. and if we -- retaliation. and if we can engage immediately, whether it is sitting down and breaking bread or taking off on a camping trip to sewer' not a target. >> reporter: -- so you're not a target.

>> reporter: they had to partways with family and friends with the gang. >> my husband's cousin seen him get shot. he was waiting and watching my husband get shot. and from there, he went to try to be in a gang. >> people associating with gang members can be very dangerous. >> this summit is another step in trying to change that reaction. >> i think our kids are being destroyed. and because families don't have the knowledge of what is really going on, and what they're seeing with the gangs invading our city. >> reporter: in san jose, anne makovec, cbs 5. checking other bay other headline, the teenager who says she was gang raped outside richmond high has settled a civil case with the school district. for $4 million. and attorneys tell the contra costa county times the girl means the -- the deal means the girl will not have to go to trial or give depositions but prosecutors say she will have to testify in criminal cases dealing with the 2009 attack. six people are facing trials. a vacaville middle school

teacher is asking for a restraining order against a 13- year-old student. julie davis says the boy threatened her and tripped her, breaking her arm and dislocating her shoulder. the school district launched an investigation, but they could not determine if the student tripped davis intentionally. he was suspended for five days. and a sight not seen in six decades. harbor porpoises have been spotted in the bay waters off marin. the researcher bill keener snapped several pictures of the marine mammals over the last year. the porpoises disappearedded disappeared in world war two possibly because of the navy and because of gill netters in the 1980s and it could be the sign of a healthier ecosystem. why opponents of roe v. wade have new hope to roll back abortion rights. a splendor, sailing toward san francisco. what is next for the formally crippled cruise ship. i'm meteorologist lawrence

abortion opponents marched in san francisc tens of thousands of abortion opponents marched in san francisco today, on the 38th anniversary of the supreme court ruling that legalized it. anti-abortion groups stretched for blocks along the embarcadero. pro choice advocates had a smaller counter-protest. the crowd appeared to be significantly bigger than last year. abortion opponents say it could be because of the new conservative infusion in congress. a hit-and-run crash leads to an evacuation overnight. san jose police say a driver slammed his car into a natural gas line about 3:00 a.m. the leaking gas forced the evacuation of residents along the 1200 block of south second street. in light of recent events, few were complaining about having to leave. >> we were just happy that they

vacation quickly became a nightmare. a fire knocked out the engine. leaving the ship outside porta valla reflex rta with no electricity and running water and food. >> and it is great for the maritime industry and it showed san diego and the world what we can do. >> reporter: for more that two months the ship has been in san diego undergoing repairs. and now it is heading to san francisco to finish things up. >> kind of sad to see it go. it is a lot of jobs for san diego. >> reporter: jobs and money. it is believed the unexpected stop in san diego filled thousands of hotel rooms with granded passengers and crew. and -- with stranded passengers and crew. today the ship left with a small handful of staff. >> great day to cruise. too bad no one is on it. >> reporter: and the ship in all its splendor turned many heads as it got out of town friday afternoon and begs the question -- >> would you ride on it? >> hell yeah no problem.

okay. i know this may be our rainy season, but it is sure nice to have the sunshine in january, isn't it? >> it feels good, doesn't it? we had the sun out there today. and warm temperatures. some places almost 20 degrees warmer than normal. >> yes. >> gorgeous. it is something like that that we may have tomorrow? >> we will try to get close. it looks like it will hang around for a bit as the high pressure continues to hold on. no rain in sight. but enjoy the fine weather while we have it. outside today, lots of sunshine. continuing mostly clear skies around the bay area tonight. a few high clouds. continuing to move across the skies. other than that, looking good so far. i think as we head toward the next couple of days, not bad at all. watch out along the coastline, and not many folks going out there tonight. be careful if you plan to head in that direction. high surf advisory until 3:00 a.m. and swells 15-18 feet. even as they come down, they will be running big out to the coast. if you want to head to the beach, be careful with the

waves. they can be dangerous at times. tomorrow, it is going to be one of the gorgeous days after a couple of patches of fog early on in the morning in the valleys and a lot of sunshine. a little hazy but not bad at all. and the temperatures are running 60 to 70 just about everywhere you go. today, what a day it was. 74 degrees. one of the hot spots, in santa rosa. 71 redwood city. and 72 in san jose. and 72 degrees in fairfield. just one of those beautiful mid winter days here in the bay area. and numbers outside right now, running in the 50s an 60s. very comfortable. almost 70 degrees in santa rosa with a nice pocket of warm air there. and as we head toward the afternoon tomorrow, around the state you will find patchy fog in the central valley and especially toward the fresno area and not a whole lot of sunshine but plan on more sun in sacramento. and 61. high country looks good. lots of sunshine. 40s and 50s. high pressure just dominating and continuing to do so. the jet stream is pretty stagnant. exactly where it was last weekend at this time. pumping the moisture in the pacific northwest and canada while we stay high and dry with

the offshore wind bringing the hazy conditions outside and that is a pretty comfortable temperature, as we head toward the afternoon. and still, we may see a couple of patches of fog in some of the interior valleys but overnight lows not too bad. and 30s and some 40s outside. and we head in through the early morning and it won't be long until the sun shows up and warms the temperatures up very nicely. and plan on 70 in morgan hill and 68 in san jose and 67 in san mateo. each day, we will see a couple of patches of fog, but by the afternoon, plenty of 60s popping up as well. and in the north bay, a few patches of fog but not long, lots of sunshine coming your way. some pretty comfortable weather. all right, checking out the next few day, i think the ridge of high pressure will weaken a little bit. and while we have the offshore wind now and i think by wednesday, maybe that switches to onshore and then we're talking about patchy fog returning to the coastline. it could very well continue as we head through thursday and friday. and that is going to allow cooler temperatures to drop off along the bay area and into

drop the cardinals below .500 in the pac-10. sounds like a party. it doesn't ever stop at the levy center after santa clara beat gone zaga thursday. kevin foster scored 36 in the win and picked up where he left off against portland with 12 of the 19 points in the first half and the broncos had a career high 22 points from the senior, and they beat the pilots 72-59 and improve to 12-9 overall. and 3-2 in league play. over on the women's side, stanford blew out usc 95-51 for the 56th straight win at maple pavilion. and uc-la bounced back from the loss to stanford thursday night by beating cal 65-56. and a high school, winning to improve to 17-1. after the ncf ruled the sophomore was ineligible the pride had to forfeit 16 of the wins leaving them 1-17. he transferred from benecia and allegedly had pre-enrollment
