"early" february 4th, 2011. captioning funded by cbs a good friday morning to you. i'm erica hill to a live west coast edition of "the early show." >> good morning to you, erica. i'm chris wragge. we talk about the protests going in egypt the last few days. you're looking at close to 100,000 people and some reports have more than 100,000 people descending upon liberation square there. the reports the protests are somewhat orderly where the last few days it's been violate mob-like protesters. >> we want to begin in egypt. cbs news correspondents elizabeth palmer is in cairo with the latest and a front row seat to all of this. liz, good morning. >> reporter: you can see for

yourselves these enormous crowds in tahrir square. the biggest i've seen yet. we are reporting to you from inside because the army has said we're not allowed to film from any of the vantage points overlooking the square. however, i've just been down there in the crowd and it's very -- it's a very good scene. it's relaxed. ill would say even jubilant. once again core anti-mubarak demonstrators spent the night in tahrir square and little or no violence and set up orderly checkpoints behind a barrier of wire to filter people in one by one. egyptian state television has announced the defense minister himself visited troops and the crowds in the square and the army has said once again soldiers would not fire a single bullet. the anti-mubarak opposition billed this as the day of departure.

hoping mubarak would step down but no clear sign he is indicating to do that. live pictures of the square are no longer being broadcast to the arab world 24/7 but still massive coverage of this important story and with the internet back up social networking sites are humming. as the sometimes violent upheaval continues and with services like banks and schools completely shut down americans who live and work in cairo are either keeping a low profile or leaving. >> any u.s. citizens. >> reporter: the u.s. embassy have a charter of flights to evacuate tour and residents. >> prepared to get up 1,500 people today and adding planes on as-needed basis. >> reporter: the opposition hopes this day will bring a resolution to the crisis which will be hammered out now in political back rooms, not on the street. now, the crowds -- there is something going on down there. they are cheering like mad.

we don't know whether it's because they are altogether and they have managed to pull off a piece of demonstration or whether they have heard some news. the question though, if mubarak doesn't step down the day of departure, what happens next. erica? >> that is the big question. we know you will be watching it for us there. elizabeth palmer, thanks. this morning the obama administration is working with egypt's government on a series of options. one of them calls for mubarak to resign immediately and turn over the power to a transitional government. >> reporter: the obama administration is urging the egyptian military and government to find a way for president mubarak to step down immediately and then begin a peaceful transition. officials here say that there is no one u.s. plan but there is considerable pressure, both in private and in public, from secretary of state clinton.

>> i urge the government and a broad and credible representation of egypt's opposition, civil society, and political factions to begin immediately, serious negotiations on a peaceful and orderly transition. >> reporter: there are ongoing conversations between washington and egypt's military and its new vice president omar suleiman but not directly with president mubarak. the obama administration has moved in ten days from embracing mubarak as a longtime ally to deciding that it's now absolutely necessary for him to go. but they want the egyptians to be the one who figure out how to do it. bill plante, cbs news the white house. >> bill, thank you. now here is erica. we want to take a look now at what is next for egypt and, in turn, for the region. joining bus a look at the possible scenarios is bobby ghosh, deputy international

editor for "time" magazine and the story you're working on for the next issue of the magazine. good to have you with us as always. we have heard a little bit about the possible plans and the involvement of the united states. does this u.s. risk anything by at least appearing to be so involved in this move to force mubarak out? >> well, the obama administration has been behind the curve on egypt for about ten days now and it looks like they are trying to get ahead of it. you're right. it seems -- it won't go down well in the street if washington is seen to be pushing the levers here. probably a better idea >> which has been the focal point and things erupting in tunisia not long ago. a number of demonstrations planned throughout the region today. what are you looking at most closely? >> we are looking particularly at yemen. i was just there. it's a country in many ways similar to egypt and very very

poor, very very corrupt. you have essentially a dictator who has been there 32 years and the people who want to see him go. protests already leading up to this. today is a friday big protest. both pro and anti-government peaceful so far but things are combustible. >> a lot of people in the u.s. think of yemen and think al qaeda and the middle east and a hot bed of terrorists. as we look at egypt and what has to happen between now and september, if mubarak steps down, who is leading this government? somebody like mohamed elbaradei? >> he has a nobel prize and national credibility. he seems likely to be a transitional figure. he doesn't have a lot of political experience in egypt. also noore stood against mubarak five years ago and thrown in jail but he has a lot of credibility because he has been

in opposition for mubarak. or omar suleiman. again, a transitional figure possibly. >> what do you see happening in that transitional period? it seems unlikely mubarak can hold on until the elections in september. >> it's going to be messy. for 32 years this man has kept his opposition down. no logical leader and no natural figure. so there is going to be a lot of negotiations among the opposition groups. they are going to have to come up with a new constitution or reform the existing constitution. it's going to be quite complex. >> what does this do to the u.s. in terms of diplomacy in terms of the relations? is this a good or bad thing? >> i think very difficult because egypt is so central to the u.s. middle eastern policy. i think in the long term a good

thing. i think the united states is more comfortable when it deals with diagrammatic countries and leaders who have the credibility with their own people. >> we will continue to watch and we will be looking for that article coming up as well. bobby ghosh, thank you for coming in. are. jeff glor is standing by with a look at other headlines this morning. >> this morning, cbs news has confirmed that astronaut mark kelly will go into orbit in april as scheduled. kelly is married to congresswoman gabby giffords who was shot in the head last month in tucson arizona. he is due to command the final mission of the space shuttle "endeavour." kelly will hold a news conference this afternoon to officially announce that decision. a new senate report characterizes the ft. hood shooting as a tragedy of errors that could have and should have been prevented. report blames the fbi and the defense department. there was ample evidence according to the senate report that the gunman malik hassan was

a ticking time bomb. jpmorgan chase punish the trust trying to recover money for investors filed a 6.4 billion dollar complaint says the bank was complicit in the fraud and e-mail quoted in that suit said executives were quoted that madoff's returns were supposed to be part of a ponzi scheme. speculation this morning that a fatal car crash that killed three young adults in new jersey may have been a suicide pact. the car was discovered early yesterday morning. crashed into the wall in an elementary school and left a 6x6 foot hole there. none of the vehicles inside the vehicle were wearing a seat belt. the car was traveling at a high speed and the crash appeared to be head-on. civil rights leaders in houston outraged over the brutal beating of a teenager caught on

video. the video from last march. police have been chasing that teenage burglar suspect. four police officers were fired and await trial. city official trying to block the release of that video until after the trial took place. the son of a judge is charged with notorious casino robbery in las vegas. on december 14th, surveillance video showed a man in a motorcycle helmet escaping from the bellagio police saying he took $1.5 million in gambling chips. he was arrested on wednesday at the same casino. heels of the massive storm that buried part of the country the bitter cold snap continues for many. this morning colder in dallas than in anchorage, lass. don teague is in arlington the site of the super bowl just outside dallas. good morning don. >> reporter: yeah. 18 degrees here right now and trying to keep a positive attitude about this. seriously! we went to bed last night and they said maybe an inch of snow

overnight. we woke up this morning. most of the dallas area has 6 inches of snow on the ground now and it is still snowing. as you can imagine, that is causing havoc out on the roads. they are not equipped to deal with this kind of snowstorm here. they happen occasionally but they just only have a few trucks and a few sanders so they are out there doing what they can but strask massively backed up on the interstates and causing problems at the airport. things have slowed down to a crawl at dfw airport. love field we are told is closed right now. we don't know when they are going to open. but, obviously, the snow while they were expecting a little bit of snow they weren't expecting a lot. the fourth day schools have been closed here in much of texas and this event is happening across texas. there is freezing rain there is ice, there's sleet. it's just a mess here. speaking of texans jeff i can tell we've had about enough but i don't think we're out of the woods just yet! >> i'm sure the parents are

thrilled about school being canceled four days in a row. >> reporter: my neighbor called it teacher appreciation day. he never knew how much he loved sending his kids to school until he had them with him all day. >> don teague, thank you so much. you may want to shield your eyes, don. a picture from santa monica. take a look at this. it's supposed to be 69 degrees in santa monica, california today. this is son take monday -- this is santa monica. we were looking at miami before. balmy enniceand nice. we take a look at the national picture. in the wake of that monster storm, we have some showers rain showers in the southeast and a little bit of snow in portions of texas. look at the radar. you can see further north, not a whole lot but cold temperatures. of course, that snow that is expected to travel across the country later on today.

the west coast you had a few great days in the northwest of sunshine. unfortunately, the rain has returned. seattle and portland you get half an inch to an inch of rain and further inland in the higher elevation snow about 2 to 4 inches. this rain next 48 hours for the next couple of days, folks in this part of the country are going to see some form hey looks like a great day around the bay area, starting out with a couple of patches of fog on the coast, and the santa rosa area. but looking good to begin your day. if you're stepping out the door, you may need a jacket early on, by the afternoon, you can leave it behind. temperatures up in the 60s, and some 70s, mid-70s into the weekend. maybe some cooling as we head into monday and tuesday, we could be talking about some rain next weekend. thanks so much. that is your latest weather. now over to chris. this morning's january

eagerly anticipated jobs report is out and it's a surprise. a small increase in jobs but big drop in the unemployment rate. rebecca jarvis is here with the latest. these job numbers come out and it's a surprise to say the least. what happened here? >> lately the predictions have been way off as far as what analysts expect and what they get. this month we learned in january jobs increased in the country by 36,000. the unemployment rate in the meantime, dipped all the way down to 9%. no one expected to see something like that. you look beyond the number and you see that maybe it's not as good as people thought. >> how does this happen? allow do you get so few jobs added this month but you see such a fall in the unemployment number like that? >> a couple of things. first off, weather. weather can be a factor here because people don't go to work and don't necessarily get counted in the employment numbers. another big factor and one the economists point to when they say this number is really more negative than it is positive is

the fact that people drop out of looking for work. when they stay out unemployed for months after months some people lose hope they lose faith and they stop their job search. as a result, they don't get counted in that unemployment number and, as a result it dips down. >> so what you're saying is with this unemployment number being so low to the laymen it might look great news, but don't get too worked on this yet? >> right. we need to see in motion going downward as opposed to fluctuating going down and up and down and up. >> how many jobs would the government like to see added on? >> you take a step back and look at the number of jobs lost. more than 8 million jobs lost as a result of the recession. ben bernanke chairman of the federal reserve, says we need to see 200,000 jobs created the next six months to significantly decrease the unemployment rate and keep it low. >> let me ask you your thoughts on this because we mention the defendant a few moments ago.

arson investigators are back in san francisco's castro district this morning. the front door of a barber shop on 18th street ught fire overnigh it is 7:25 time for news headlines. arson investigators back in san francisco's castro district this morning. the front door of a barbershop caught fire last night. that was within several blocks of three fires yesterday morning. san jose fires called to a homeless shelter about 2:00 yesterday morning. a fire there was confined to the laundry room. smoke forced about 250 people out until the fire department could ventilate the shelter. a record number of people want to work at google. the company recently said it plans to hire 6,000 people this year. just last week, more than

75,000 people applied for those jobs. the labor department reported that the nation's jobless rate fell to 9% last month. we'll take a look at traffic and weather around the bay area in just a moment.

inside plunged off a highway bridge on thursday and fell 80 feet into frigid waters and rescue workers risked their own lives to save most of those inside. >> they are just now getting these personnel out of that vehicle that's black and blueeen in the water two hours. >> reporter: rescue workers trying to reach passengers stranded for two hours in a submerged vehicle. >> there is multiple ems vehicles out here ready to take these patients. >> reporter: around 6:30 a.m. thursday, the suv packed with eight people veered off a highway bridge hitting a plowed snow bank that witnesses say acted like a ramp launching them over a guardrail. >> it was just almost like a ski ramp. looks like they kind of went off in this area right here. >> reporter: the truck fell more than 80 feet to the river below. it remained only half submerged and upright in the frozen river. but with air temperatures 13 degrees below zero rescuers said hypothermia set in quickly. >> i think their core

temperatures were around 87 degrees. >> reporter: crews lowered a small boat down to the river allowing them to safely bring six people up to waiting helicopters. two died on the scene. one later died on the way to a local hospital. and five patients remain in the hospital with broken bones and hypoperm therm yeah. >> joining us from oklahoma are two of the first responders to the accident. fire chief jeff reeves and fire chief ronnie klein. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> chief reeves, i'm going to start with you. you pull up on the scene just after getting the call. did you realize at that point that, wow, this is going to be one heck of a challenge rescuing these survivors? >> yeah. just due to the elements the air temperatures being what they were minus 12 degrees. we knew it was going to be a difficult rescue in the

proximity of the victims. >> chief reeves, given the extreme weather conditions did you kind of have that clock going on in the back of your mind, knowing that time was of the essence to get to these survivors survivors? >> yeah, without a doubt. any time we're dealing with that type of temperature and then the location of the patients time is always something that is in the back of your head. also knowing the trauma that they probably had suffered due to the fall. >> did you have a plan or did it take a few minutes to kind of survey the landscape and then decide what to do? how long did it take to figure out how you were going to get to these people? >> well, you know, first when we were the fire department took command on the scene, we were supplying mutual aid to them. so once we arrived on the scene, just a short -- few minutes later than they did, we got with them and deviced a plan and they stayed up on the interstate bridge and we sent our personnel

down along the shore of the bank and tried to calm the victims at that time until we could get the additional resources that we need after we did the size-up. >> chief reeves, when your rescuers finally got to the suv, what were the condition the different survivors in at that point? >> they were extremely cold hypothermia had definitely set in.

a whole. anti-government protesters have gathered for a mass rally demanding the immediate resignation of president hosni mubarak. it's scheduled to include a march on the presidential palace and cbs news correspondent elizabeth palmer is in cairo this morning. liz, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's a real shift of mood here this morning jeff. the army has thrown its support, it appears, behind this demonstration and the soldiers set up real proper barricades with wire. in order to allow people to come into the square peacefully, show their ids and then come in. they have promised there will be no violence. at least from the army. in the move that would have been unthinkable even a week ago, the defense minister himself, according to state television came down into the crowds. it looked me like there was about several tens of thousands of people in the square at the moment. the internet is back up. so all those things are peaceful.

now, some of the images of violence are circulating on-line. we thought we would show you this one bit of video. probably from earlier in the week. it appears to show a police van careening through a crowd of peaceful marchers. now, the police are gone gone. the army has made it clear it's very much in charge. they are so far anyway keeping very good order. there is no sign at all that this is going to be violent, although we hope it will be decisive. at least by the end of the day. jeff. >> liz palmer in cairo this morning. liz, thank you. the january jobs report is out this morning. the labor department says employers added 36,000 jobs but the jobless rates are up sharply at 9%. the lowest since april 2009. this afternoon astronaut mark kelly will confirm that he is returning to space in april. an official says kelly will lead the shuttle endevour's final

mission. kelly's wife gabby giffords, is still recovering from the shooting in tucson. joining us now on the telephone is cbs news space consultant bill harwood at the kennedy space center this morning. bill, good morning to you. clearly, mark kelly has been through a lot. how does this all now affect his preparation? >> well, it's going to be interesting to track this. you know the shuttle flight, especially as a commander, is very intense. his crew starts next week what they call integrative training where they start running through mission processes and procedures with the entire mission control team. it gets very intense. i think in this case because his wife is recovering in houston, he will be able to see her as he does his training. that adds a little bit of a factor in his favor, but i think it's going to be a challenge, no question about it. >> clearly also earnings has done this many times before, bill, so nasa feels comfortable with that right? >> they really do. he is a very accomplished flyer. he flue 39 combat missions in the middle east. he is a veteran of carrier landings. hundreds of them. three shuttle missions. he obviously knows how to deal with high stress environments and situations, and, you know,

in t in this morning's hlt in this morning's health watch, what singles want. there are about 100 million single people in this country, and a new survey asks 5 2shgs00 of them what they're looking for when it comes to love, and the results are very surprising. early show contributor and psychologist dr. jennifer hartstein has, well the numbers for us this morning.

these are really i think going to surprise a lot of people. they really flipped things upside down. >> they absolutely did flip things upside down surprisingly. the male mind, what is the male thinking in the whole single world thing? >> what they found was that amongst the 21 to 24-year-old and 50 and older, there's a greater desire to marry. there is that age in the middle where women probably want to be married more especially because of their kids, but they have that, but men across the board want to have kids more than women do. >> that is a little surprising. what about -- let's turn it on the other side and talk about women. what do they want? i think most people think, well the women were the ones that really p the kids. >> and historically that's been true, but what they actually found was that women, surprisingly want more personal space, they want to have their own interests and hobbies and built-in girls night out as often as they can get them. >> why are the roles now reversed? if you took away the colors of those backgrounds, i think could you probably sit back and say, well, that sounds like the guy and that sounds like the gal. >> it is really turning

everything we've known on its ear, and i think a lot of it is that women are in a different position now than they were 30 40, 50 years ago. they really don't have to be married to be happy. they don't have to worry about a man to provide on for them. they can do a lot of that themselves. >> was this a shift shift over the past couple of days before wr things started to turn? was it five years ago, ten years ago? >> it looks leak it's been a gradual change but it's definitely been happening over time. stoo another thing that we often talk about and love at first sight, it sounds so great, the numbers there are a little bit surprising as well. >> they are. what they found was that 54% of men believe in love at first sight. they believe that it can happen. whereas, only 44% of women believe in love at first sight. >> why is that? because, again, you often hear about women talking about this more than men. >> right. i was discuss this actually with my husband about it, and we were really talking about, like what's the definition of love? is it really love is it not? we both came to the conclusion that maybe it's men are more impulsive on that first meeting, where women are more logical

about where it's going to go. >> hook-ups one night stands. has the playing field changed? has the landscape changed there, or can you have a successful relationship? >> they found that 35% of people have a one nightstand and actually turns into a long-term relationship. >> really? >> really. it is very different than what we used to think. >> does that surprise you? >> yes, that actually did surprise me although i do know some people where that has been true. >> let's talk about valentine's day. it's ten days away. there are, like we said hundreds of millions of single people out there so do you have any tips for them as valentine's day does fast approach and how they can meet that other person? >> i do. the first thing is you want to give second chances. one of the other thing that study said is three-quarters of the people didn't like the person the first time they met them and gave them a second chance. you want to pursue interests, do things you like, maybe you'll meet people at that cooking class, maybe you'll meet them at the sports bar. be open-minded and take care of yourself and be confident and you'll meet someone that's confident and recognizes your own confidence. >> be comfortable with yourself

the second my head finds the water, the noise of the outside world quiets. almost immediately, i am greeted by a whale shark and in this overwhelming moment, i feel a sense of calm. seeing so many amazing creatures up close and personal my respect and awe is only enhanced. my passion reinforced. and i am humbled by an experience that will be impossible to forget. i am lucky. one day i'm hoping to get a real job. because if i get paid to do something like that, i am a very lucky person. so, 22 feet long alice is. and she's still growing. >> wow.

>> being -- even if you're in an aquarium there's really just a sense of calm. you can't be claustrophobic because you can't run away from the water. you can't swim away from the water. i would do it again in a second. i would love to do it in a real ocean. >> it was so calming. >> it was. all along, i was asked are you nervous, are you nervous? and i wasn't. there wasn't a single moment when i was nervous because, you know, a whale shark is very docile and i wanted to bring you guys back a whale shark but we couldn't fit it on the set. >> you didn't feel like bait at any point? >> no, i did not. >> did it even notice you? because it seems that in addition to the whale shark everything else in the tank is just sort of oh, yeah it's another person. >> exactly. it's very pavlovian. when you go into the water those whale sharks they're like dogs. it's like oh, it's feeding time. so you all brought back something wonderful. i obviously could not bring you back a whale shark. however, whale sharks have been adopted in your names. >> oh. >> so erica hill you will help

suspicious fire in the castro district.... in just 24 hours. arson investigators were called it is 8:25, time for news headlines. it is the fourth suspicious fire in the castro district in just 24 hours. san francisco arson investigators were called to the scene overnight. the front door of a barbershop on 18th street caught fire. a resident was able to put out the flames. yesterday, an apartment fire in the same area forced 17 people out of their homes. parents and teachers wrapping up a rally in concord. the goal to save sillvan wood elementary school from closure. caltrain looking to hike

on you because it's not -- you're not so much part of an ensemble right now. it's a little bit the movie is more on your shoulders. >> i guess so. it doesn't feel like that though. it really doesn't. i just really felt i was partners with leyton and every day was its own experience, and we really didn't think about the pressure or what comes with what we're doing. it was just we were so excited to have the opportunity to have our first real you know, starring role until a feature film together because we were friends. >> was it a nice relief when you finally heard, okay that's a wrap? >> well, yeah. you know we also were able to just let off so much steam because we shot that fight scene. that was the last scene we shot. it was a huge tension releaser. >> i want to recommend to people, it is quite a -- it's a good fight scene. as far as fight scenes go, it's a good one. >> well, yeah. i mean we googled girl fights on youtube and, you know we made sure it looked real.

girls don't all fight with open hands. they punch. >> you're the reigning esquire magazine sexiest woman alive. when you finally got that call, what was that like for you? >> i really didn't believe it. i was at the airport waiting to board a flight, and i was just like what? really? it was -- i felt at my least sexy moment when you are traveling. i don't know. it was so flattering, and i couldn't believe it. all i was aware of were the women who had the title before me, and i just thought to be in that company, what an honor. zook are there any duties that come along with it? do you have to ride on any floats, give any speeches? >> no no. no. >> also "gq magazine," you have a couple of pictures. you are breaking into the risque photo sexy mode? >> i don't know if i'm break intoing any sort of thing. it's just two magazines. you know i have a couple you know -- from here, yeah listen

i did it two times. it's fun. >> one other question because you do get a lot of attention because you are a long-time girlfriend of a man who is royalty here in new york, derek jeter. can i ask how the sexiest woman alive and the captain of the yankees keep such a low profile because you do manage to do that? is that a safe assessment? >> we don't -- i certainly am -- i don't walk around like that title, and he doesn't either. also, we're such private people and i understand the curiosity, but the way we keep it private, like say the way we keep it low key is simply by not talking about it. >> just let it kind of go. >> yeah. >> congratulations. also, charlie's angels have you another big project coming up too. the tv version of "charlie's angels." you've been cast. are you looking forward to that? >> i am very much looking forward to that. i am so excited. i just got my schedule, and i'm going to be doing martial arts training and doing, i guess, my specialty is going to be cars and so i'm going to be doing

follow-alongs with police cars and chases and all -- i'm so excited. >> did you tell them you don't need fight training. i can fight. go see me in my movie. >> thank you. >> thank you for coming in. it's a pleasure to meet you. congratulations on the movie. >> thank you. >> the roommate is now in theaters, and can you check your local listings. i recommend you go see it. here's erica. >> chris, thanks. this sunday would have been president ronald reagan's 100th birthday. his legacy is being remembered all this week. the reagan presidential library is planning concerts a giant birthday cake, and the opening of a new museum. there's also an ongoing project there where students get a rather unique history lesson. cbs news correspondent elaine kehano is here with the story. what a great idea for kids. >> really interesting. good morning, erica. these kids were not even born when reagan left office so to them experiencing a crisis from the 1980s is history, but it's more than that. it's history coming alive.

>> reporter: this is not your typical field trip. these fifth graders visiting the reagan library in california are about to go back 28 years and straight into the nation's nerve center. >> when you walk through these doors, you will no loaninger be students. >> you will make history. >> reporter: the discovery center program at the reagan library has been imersing kids of all ages into the cold war. it's an interactive learning experience where each student plays a part in acting out the day's history lesson. >> students love it because it's a time for them to play roles that they wouldn't get to play anywhere else. teachers love it because it hits a lot of the core standards. >> reporter: this class from township elementary school is recreating an international incident that president reagan dealt with in 1983. >> the military needs orders on the situation in grenada. >> reporter: rebels backed by cuba have taken over the island nation of grenada in the caribbean and the u.s. has a major concern. >> 800 american medical students are on the island and might

number danger. >> reporter: these kids have not yet studied grenada, and that's by design. soon they'll learn how history unfolded, but for now they're on their own. they assume their roles in realistic settings. journalists must decide what to report from the white house press room. generals head to the military command center aboard an aircraft carrier. some head to the oval office. >> you are all the president's trusted advisors. >> reporter: and kendall wilkerson becomes the most powerful 11-year-old on the planet. >> i am president reagan the commander in chief and the leader of the free world. >> reporter: like the former president, kendall must choose whether to invade grenada to rescue the medical students or negotiate with the rebel leaders. >> i'm kind of thinking a because if i discuss with them then we can make a deal. >> the point really isn't to get all of the answers correct. there are no right or wrong answers, but we do give them what happened true to history.

>> the president of the united states. >> reporter: then as reagan had done 28 years before kendall addresses the nation. >> the last few days have been difficult for our country. >> i concluded the united states had no choice but to act strongly and decisively. >> reporter: the u.s. won a military victory in grenada and the 800 medical students were saved. 18 service members were killed in action. >> it is a lot of weight. it is like having this whole building on top of you. >> reporter: after a day of experiencing the oval office, commanding shifts even taking the controls of air force one, learning firsthand how our government functions is a lesson that can't be beat. >> it's just something that you know is going to be a memory that they have for the rest of their life. >> more than 20,000 kids have taken part so far from fifth grade, like the group we just saw, all the way up through high school. erica. >> what a great way to live history.

about $2, $3 for a ball of dough or something in the freezer department or get one of those little tubes. just roll that out into a big rectangle. i have a rolling pin there for you. while you roll thatç out, i'm going to go over here. this is our sausage and pepper mixture. i love sausage and pepper, sandwiches. this is going into one roll. you don't have to be at the stove making everything. it's a good make-ahead. i'm using turkey sausage because it's not as greasy when you put it in the stromboli. it won't have grease running out of it. some onions. some peppers. we've got garlic in here rsh really, really delicious. get it kind of big. be aggressive. >> all right. all right. not going to ruin it. >> that looks pretty good. we'll get started with it. okay. then our sausage goes right on top. i'm going to spread it over. it's kind of a sad state you got going there. >> it's not great.

i know that. >> i thought, oh heavens, no idea what they're doing to themselves with all that -- >> it's not even -- you can't even find pepperoni in italy. it's totally italian-american. i love it. we've got provalone and i'm using banana peppers. they're just pickled, and they add a really nice balance to all that spicy meat in there. >> i have never even heard of -- i tried one a few moments ago. it was really great. you can never have enough cheese. >> never have enough cheese. now we're going to roll it into a cylinder just like this. roll it up. doesn't that look good? >> one big fajita. >> let's seal the edges like that. i have one in the oven already

done if you want to grab that for me. you brush it with egg wash. look at the line coming out of the oven. >> look at this. it smells fantastic. finished product look at that. >> yum! how fantastic? serve this with some marijuana era dipping sauce. cut right in here. look how good that looks. yummy. chris, this has your name all over it. >> you know what -- >> you want a bite? >> may sni. >> go for it. >> isn't this rude? >> go for it. so yummy. what do you think? >> hmm. >> yeah? >> i love that. hmm. >> really really. i'll go back to that later. i'm going to save that. >> my favorite part nachos. i could eat nacho cheese sauce every day. >> it's a football rite of passage. >> i had some this morning, and even at 6:00 a.m. i liked it. you just melt some butter and flour. i added some milk in here. now, put that cheese in. we're going stir the cheese.

let it get nice and melty and put in the salsa. the cheese sauce by itself you can just use for anything but adding the salsa makes it nice and spicy. >> gives a nice consistency in there too. it's easier to mix. >> you stir that for me. >> yep. >> here are nachos. i'm using two different kinds of beans. we have black beans and refried beans. i put that in the oven for about ten minutes so they get nice and hot, and just until the cheese melts, and then just pour that on top. go for it chris. >> ready? >> doesn't that look delicious? >> good. >> can you top it with all your favorite nacho toppings like tomatoes. i like some sour cream. some fat on there. >> you cannot have enough cheese on there. jalapenos. >> many a late night in college i was eating nachos just like this. kind of reminds me of it. we hadn't been drinking at all. >> people are saying how can you eat these fattining foods and look how you do? >> xer sides. >> next up buffalo chicken

salad. i love buffalo sauce but making wings at home can get really messy. >> so? >> so just take a rotisserie chicken, shred it up. just one. toss it with buffalo sauce. put it on a big bowl of lettuce, and then we're going to add some scallions, bacon tomatoes. this looks so yummy. some celery. >> yep. >> you have to have blue cheese. >> lots of it too. >> that kind of balances the spiciness. i can hear you over there really getting into it. >> you put your hands right in there. you don't even have to use any utensils? >> i don't know. >> i wanted to see how far you would take this. >> some auf kaudo. that looks good. put that in there. you toss it and i'm going to put the dressing on it. we can enjoy this. it looks great. with a nice cold beer. it's a delicious menu where are.

good morning. as our morning commute winds down, let's go up towards the south bay. an accident cleared to the shouter, but jams from the 880 interchange. here's a live look at the backup. slow and go from downtown. northbound 880 as you pass the coliseum, brake lights towards downtown oakland. your drive time there almost a half hour from 238 towards the maze. check out the bay bridge. they never even had to turn the metering lights on. a great commute into san francisco. that's your traffic. we're going to find many a bright spot around the bay area today. we have a whole lot of sunshine coming our way. ocean beach looking good. we did have patchy fog out there a little bit early on today, but all of that is going to be gone by the afternoon. we're talking sunshine, and pretty nice weather. still chilly in spots. 30s in parts of the north bay. 33 in san jose.
