5:01 am
all that and more "early" this saturday morning, february 5th, all that and more "early" this saturday morning, february 5th, 2011. captioning funded by cbs the empire state building on yet another icy, cold, rainy day in new york city. >> a little overcast. good morning, welcome to "the early show," i'm rebecca jarvis. >> a lot to get to. it is, of course, day 12 of the crisis in egypt. this morning a dangerous stalemate, about 100,000 anti-government protesters remain in the heart of cairo, promising to continue demonstrations until egyptian president hosni mubarak leaves office. cbs news correspondent mark strassmann is in the egyptian capital where it is already saturday afternoon. mark, what's the latest? >> good morning, russ. in the ebb and flow of this protest, i can tell you it's actually become a much calmer day here in downtown cairo. the thugs are gone, the protesters are still here.
5:02 am
but behind me they're in far fewer numbers. some of them have simply gone home. the real drama here today is indoors behind closed doors asr the mubarak cabinet looks for ways to ease out their divisive president. in tahrir square the threat of more thug attacks seems largely over and mubarak's government said they will not clear the square so protesters apparently can stay as long as they like. but mubarak may be leaving much sooner. his cabinet discussing ways to strip him of his powers. but not his title. and even get him out of the country to ease tensions. and then, they'd negotiate with opposition leaders about constitutional reform. this week widespread brawls and blood lust in the streets, especially attacks by thugs apparently sent by mubarak's regime, may have been the last straw for egypt's president. to ease negotiation for his removal, one opposition group here, the muslim brotherhood, has promised not to run for president. these religious fundamentalists seek an islamic government, which unnerves many egyptians
5:03 am
and many westerners. >> i think there should be a comfort, if it doesn't seem that the brotherhood were active in politics would get a majority. >> reporter: john alterman is a middle east expert in washington i spoke to on skype. >> if you're going to have more open politics in egypt you have to somehow bring these people in. you have to account for them, and the system will keep them from taking over the system. >> reporter: to protesters in tahrir square, open politics starts with closing the door on hosni mubarak. back live now in tahrir square. this is a live shot of the protesters. some of them, you can see with the banners and the tents. the tents are clearly a sign that some of these folks are in no mood to get out of here in any particular hurry. right now the army chief of staff is holding a press conference. he is expected to ask these protesters to go home. that they sent the message and the message has now been received. but, if anything, these protesters seem to be moving in the opposite direction. they've already announced plans to hold three million-strong marches in the coming week.
5:04 am
rebecca? >> mark strassmann in cairo. thanks so much. and president obama is watching the unfolding events in egypt very closely. cbs news correspondent whit johnson is live at the white house with the latest on that. good morning, whit. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning to you. the white house approach towards egypt has been a delicat d one. president obama says the transition of power must begin right now, but he stopped short of calling for president hosni mubarak to step down. >> for the future of egypt will be determined by its people. >> reporter: with its peep speaking loud and clear, friday president obama urged the egyptian counterpart not to resist the impending change. >> the key question he should be asking himself is, how do i leave a legacy behind in which egypt is able to get through this transformative period. >> reporter: still, behind the scenes a mubarak exit plan is under discussion. key u.s. officials, including vice president biden, secretary clinton, secretary gates, have all been in communication with
5:05 am
the egyptian government. president obama himself has spoken directly to mubarak twice. >> we want to see this moment of turmoil turn into a moment of opportunity. the entire world is watching. >> reporter: the president reiterated publicly that new government negotiations should include a broad coalition representing egyptian society. he hopes it will lead to free and fair elections. without the bloodshed that's already stained the movement. >> going back to the old ways is not going to work. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton is in munich for an international security conference. this morning, she urged middle eastern leaders to embrace democratic reforms. she described the turmoil in the region as a perfect storm of power trend. rebecca? >> whit, some in washington are criticizing u.s. intelligence for not seeing this movement develop earlier. what's the white house response? >> well, rebecca, that's right. some top lawmakers on capitol hill expressed their concern.
5:06 am
and then there were reports that president obama himself expressed frustration about the intelligence, but yesterday afternoon, the white house press secretary watered down some of those reports, suggesting, predicting the events in egypt would have been tough. and said that the white house was properly informed. >> whit johnson at the white house. thanks so much. now here's russ. >> okay, rebecca, thank you. so what more perhaps could president obama be doing? and what does the instability in egypt mean for the u.s.? joining us now from providence, rhode island is former undersecretary of state nicolas burns. nick, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> the president of the united states says that egypt should transition to a new government. hosni mubarak says president obama just doesn't get it. in your mind how poorly or how well has the white house handled this crisis to this point? >> you know, russ, i think the president's done very well. because he's done two things that are very important in a dramatic and complex situation like this. he's clearly affirmed what the united states stands for. in his press conference yesterday, he was pushing for
5:07 am
transition. very critical of the egyptian government action against the protesters, calling for president mubarak to do the right thing. now on the other hand, the second thing i think he's done very well, he's working behind the scenes. we're a very influential country, the most influential country, i think, in egypt. we have a close relationship with the mubarak government. he's using that influence to try to nudge mubarak, as i see it, out of power. so i think there's a balance of public statement, quiet diplomacy, has been effective so far. >> you talked about this behind-the-scenes maneuvering that's going on. as someone who's been in the middle of this before, kind of give us an idea of what's being discussed. >> the stakes are very high for the united states. so obviously the white house and the state department are very concerned that the concrete interests that we have there, egypt's peace with israel for 30 years, the fact that egypt is supportive of the u.s. countering al qaeda, the fact that egypt is helping us to block iran, we don't want to lose that. any transition away from mubarak
5:08 am
to a new government. but on the other hand, there's something very important happening in the arab world from tunisia to egypt, perhaps even to other places, people want to be free. they're protesting, largely peacefully for a better future, and the u.s. needs to be behind them, and supportive of them. and i think the president has been. so we have a real difficult balancing act here. but, again, i think the administration has it just about right. >> let me ask you this, president mubarak again has said that president obama doesn't understand egyptian culture, and that mubarak cannot just leave office. what options are at mr. obama's disposal if mr. mubarak does decide to stay? >> you know, dictators often say i've got to stay because if i leave there will will be chaos. that's the response of dictators. i think what the president can do is use the influence of the united states to indicate to president mubarak, you've lost control of your streets, you're losing control of your government, why don't you hand off power to a group of your own
5:09 am
advisers who might work with reformers in a transitional period to prepare the way for a constitution and elections. there are indications this morning, and today in egypt, that the government is considering negotiations with a group of reformers, and i think that's a rather positive sign. >> you touched on this, but if this instability does continue in egypt, what is the biggest danger for the u.s.? >> i think the biggest danger for the u.s., the worst-case scenario, if you will, is instability, leading to more violence, leading to more cuffing by the people, and perhaps a radical government coming into power. i actually don't think that's likely. i think it's more likely that you're going to see a very confused, very difficult, very long period of slowly mubarak understanding he's got to leave, a transitional period, and then, you know, politics. reformers and people trying to work out a better way to govern egypt. and the united states needs to be centrally involved, behind the scenes, but i think the president's right, this is about
5:10 am
egyptians. they'll make these decisions. so we need to be a little bit respectful of their process. >> very quickly. one option on the table is for the new vice president, mr. suleiman to come on and take over as president. in your mind, how likely is that to happen? >> you know, i think it may be the most likely scenario. president mubarak has to leave. omar suleiman, experienced as vice president could then perhaps lead a caretaker government that could include some reformers so they could work out these problems. one of the problems here, egypt hasn't had a democracy since 1952. it's been run by generals. the egyptians need a period of time to work things out in a democratic way. >> nicolas burns, as always, we appreciate your insight. thanks so much. >> thank you. >> now here's rebecca. >> thanks, russ. the political unrest and uncertainty in egypt is causing economic worries, both here and elsewhere in the world. oil and food prices are moving higher and there are concerns oil supplies that come through the suez canal could be at risk. for a look at that and the latest on the u.s. unemployment
5:11 am
rate we're joined by michael santolli, associate editor of barron's. if you look at where oil prices have gone throughout this crisis in cairo in the last couple of weeks here, you did see a spike on concern. >> yes. >> has it necessarily hit consumers in their wallets yet? >> not just yet. you know, we're up around $90 a barrel for oil globally. it was there before the egypt crisis hit and kind of pulled back, and then rose again. i don't think, unless it really blossoms into a regional crisis where you do have genuine transport issues in terms of the suez canal, or if it somehow gets to saudi arabia, i don't think right now egypt is going to be the catalyst for any kind of an oil shock here. i do think what's interesting, no pun intended, chicken or the egg question, but food prices globally seem to have been a catalyst for a lot of the unrest over there. and that's something that i think we're going to have to deal with. emerging markets, especially, are dealing with lots of food inflation right now. and that's something that potentially could have unintended consequences elsewhere. >> but how about here in the
5:12 am
united states? >> and here. and less some here only because we spend less as a percentage of our overall pocketbook on food than do the emerging markets households. >> because they have smaller pock pocketbooks. >> exactly. right now it's an issue and you feel it when you go to the supermarket but it's not something that we're even back to 2008 levels, for example, of food prices. >> nicolas burns laid out the worst case scenario as being a radical government takes over in egypt. in that scenario, what happens to stocks? >> i don't necessarily think it's that big ap economic hit. it's obviously diplomatic and humanitarian issue before it's an economic one. egypt, frankly, is just not that big an economy. they're not, let's remember, an oil exporter. a big exporter. so i do think something that we would be concerned about, mostly because of the regional implications. if it really did mean kind of a tide turning away from democracy, or away from stable governments in that region, i do think would be an issue. i don't think that the stock market right now is going to
5:13 am
internalize it too much. >> on friday the labor department came out with the most recent survey on the employment picture, unemployment down to 9% in this country. but the job creation is still not where we want it. only 36,000 jobs created in the month of january. >> yeah. it's still been a struggle. obviously sort of a modestly disappointing report. i would point out the december number was revised higher. so, you know, the department goes back and kind of, trues up its numbers, and it's been a positive trend, but very sluggish. we're basically at the point we were in early 2004, similar point after a recession, when people were widely disappointed with the pace of job creation. companies were profitable, as they are right now, and you see all these leading indicators of job growth that should say hiring's going to start to really cadillac and get going. it didn't happen. but then it did happen in a burst. >> what ultimately causes that burst? >> nothing really caused it, except that the pent-up demand for people among big companies, especially, and small, that sort of just kind of came to a head.
5:14 am
we definitely had weather issues in january. it's not an excuse. but definitely something of an influence. and i think that the fact that the market was very calm yesterday, in other words it didn't panic at this disappointing number, showed that people were saying well, you know, there's a lot of noise in this number, let's not really take too much into it. >> speaking of that noise, for the month of february, when we look at next month's jobs picture, do you think unemployment is going to go up or down from 9%? >> well, the 9% number was i bit of an anomaly. it kind of resulted from the fact that a lot of people said they didn't look for work in the past week or two weeks. that's something that brings the unemployment rate down but doesn't really improve the employment picture. you could see a bump back up, i don't think a dramatic one. but i do think there were weather issues there that people just didn't go look for work because they were snowed in. >> michael, thanks so much for being with us. we appreciate it. russ? >> thank you, rebecca. now going to tell but a story that mixes football and nasty weather. of course, tomorrow the pittsburgh steelers take on the green bay packers in super bowl xlv.
5:15 am
this year the big game is in arlington, texas, skrust outside of dallas, which is suffering through one of its worst winters in memory and turning the super bowl into an enormous challenge. cbs news correspondent don teague is live from cowboys stadium in arlington. don, good morning. >> good morning. it is brutal cold. you just caught me trying to pull my collar down here. we've been bundled up from the -- it's about 18 degrees here this morning. we have had two bouts of snow and ice here in the dallas area this week. it's been followed by bitter cold, and just hasn't let up. a terrifying scene at cowboys stadium. the largest domed structure in the world shed large sheets of ice from its 300 foot tall roof friday. frozen chunks landing on workers who were clearing snow from walkways below. six were injured. one seriously. >> the likelihood is they'll have to get somebody up there to get the snow off as soon as possible. >> the falling ice caps what has been a difficult pre-super bowl

5:17 am
yeah, but die that's have cool arctic hats like i have. so we are ready here, as well. i found my hat. it was blowing away here. the thing is, it's not golf weather for this super bowl. but the folks who are here, the fans, they're committed to enjoying this, and they better because we're talking an average $4,600 apiece for the tickets. that's a lot of money to be cold. >> oh, my goodness. >> but they're used to it. that's the news. >> don, are they going to close the roof on the stadium for the game tomorrow? >> yeah, i was just going to say -- yeah, it's going to be 72 degrees inside that stadium. it will be nice and toasty. the problem is, of course, that there's vast parking out here so there's going to be a pretty good walk in. we'll be above freezing tomorrow here for the first time in about a week. so that's good news. something like the 40s. but, it's just been a really tough week here. >> all right, my friend. don teague in arlington, texas, thank you so much. and stay warm. and now for a look at the rest of this morning's headlines, cbs news

that is all ahead. first more on that explosive new videotape that appears to show a group of houston police officers beating a teen burglary suspect. it led to the firing and indictment of those officers. cbs news correspondent seth doane reports. >> reporter: the end of a houston police chase, caught on surveillance camera, then 15-year-old chad hole li, who was being chased after burglarizing a home hits the ground and puts his hands over his head, as if to surrender. but the drama had only just begun. one police officer appears to stomp on his head while others kick the teen. one cop seems to land five kicks. then, another officer punches him again and again. as he's picked up, there's another kick. >> just kicking me. and i blanked out. >> reporter: this video was not supposed to be seen yet by the public. >> we hear these stories all the time in our community. all the time. we just happen to have one that was caught on tape. >> reporter: a federal judge had barred the video's release until a trial this summer. but a community ack touchist

5:33 am
young man who was on the ground. you can clearly see he surrendered, he gave up, and the beating he took was absolutely unnecessary. it was shameful. that's how i feel. >> the defense and the district attorney in the case and the police department have said that it will be tough now for the defendants to get a fair trial now that this tape is out there, and they are blaming you specifically for putting this tape out there. what's your response to that? >> one, i believe people have a constitutional right to see the videotape. these are public servants in uniform, caught in the public, and this was caught on tape. and to say to the people that you cannot see what they're doing in uniform, in the public, is a disgrace and disrespectful to the citizens of harris county who have the intelligence and the ability to sit on a jury, look at the facts, put the pretrial publicity to the side and weigh the real information in the case. the videotape speaks for itself. there's not much science to it. so to say that a jury can't make a clear determination of what they're saying and weigh the facts in this case here in harris town toy is an insult to the people and the citizens.
5:34 am
>> mr. x i know you've been applauded by the folks in your community for getting this tape into the public light. however there are people out there, i understand you received death threats, as well. why do you think there are people angry about this? >> because many in the black community have always said that these beatings were taking place. many african-american make these allegations weekly in our community, by the houston police department. but this is the first time that we've ever captured one on videotape. and then when the mayor herself publicly stated that i should be prosecuted for releasing this videotape to the public, that inflamed the community, and inflamed both sides, both police and those who want the police to be punished for this videotape. so i am in total disagreement with the mayor and those who say that the public had no right to see this videotape. >> okay, quanell x, thank you so much for joining us. we certainly appreciate it. >> thank you. >> right now we want to hear from the other side, defense attorney dick de guereguerin represents one of the police officers caught on tape. good morning to you. >> hi, russ, good morning. >> do you think this tape will prevent your client from getting
5:35 am
a fair trial? >> i'm very concerned about it. and all the judges that have seen this have been concerned about it. i'm a lawyer. i respect the law. and i think that a case like this ought to be played out in the courts before a fair jury that's not influenced unduly by a video that's now gone viral. it's ugly. it's awful. but if you look at it very carefully, my client, for instance, all he did was he ran up and tried to get this burglar from escaping and also tried to get his hands behind his back so he could be handcuffed. and then he ran off and made another arrest. he was only there less than four seconds. >> your client is andrew blumberg. >> he's the first guy on the scene. but if you look at the tape, you get angry. anybody gets angry at seeing something like this. >> let me ask you this, mr. deguerin. you didn't want this tape out there, as well. these officers are paid by the public, with tax dollars. shouldn't the public have the right to see this tape?
5:36 am

the common cold isn't just a nuisance for the nose, but the leading cause of doctor visits and missed days from work and school. the average adult gets two to four colds per year, while children average six to ten. there's no cure, but with the ght weapons in your medicine cap net, you can effectively treat the symptoms. and here to show us what those are is dr. alana levine, primary care physician and spokesperson for the american academy of pediatrics. great to have you with us. >> thanks, rebecca. >> it's one of the biggest nuisances. it can be horrible for parents, horrible for kids. so let's talk ingredients first. before we get into what to have. what do you want to look for in ingredients. >> okay, so you want to make sure that you have something that's going to make you feel better. if you have a fever, if you're feeling achy, you want to have a pain reliever fever reducer like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. you want to make sure you know what you're taking so you know what the dosing interval is. because ibuprofen is every six
5:42 am
hours but acetaminophen is every four. >> so it can be different even if you think you're working towards the same function, so a pain reliever, a fever reducer for example, pay close attention to the label. >> exactly. when it comes, also to other things like for example, congestion. what do you want to look for? >> okay. so for adults or children over the age of 4, you can use a decongestant. the one that i like the most is the ingredient pseudo ephedrine. this isn't commonly on the shelf. you have to talk to the pharmacist about and get behind the shelf. children under the age of 4, you can use what we call nasal saline drops and a bulb syringe. you can loosen up the mucous with the normal saline and suck out the mucous with the ball syringe. doesn't sound so great but actually works well and it's much safer than using cough and cold medications that have not been shown to be effective in young children. >> one more question on decongestants. when it comes to adults, is the stuff behind the counter what you want to go for?
5:43 am
>> that's what i like and that's what i take and recommend to my patients. i think it works better. >> it works better. that is good information because i always wonder when i'm looking at the aisles, go with this or to ask the pharmacist to get what's behind the counter. >> and it's very confusing. because a lot of medications have multisymptom medications and they have lots of ingredients. it's really important that people educate themselves and ask their pharmacist if they're not sure what the ingredients are. because you also want to be sure you don't double up on things. i'm a big believer in single ingredient medications. >> like cough suppressants for example. >> okay, so there are 4r09s of cough suppressants out there. again for adults you can take dextromethorphan, talk to your pharmacist, see which one he recommends. but for young children, again, you can't use cough and cold medications. so for them i recommend honey. a teaspoon of honey goes a long way. scientific studies show it's actually just as effective if not more effective than cough medicine. >> and lastly, running a cold mist humidifier for example, you say, can be useful for treating the symptoms.
5:44 am
>> exactly. especially in the young children who can't take medication it moistens the air, it helps make them feel better and definitely will help them with a better night's sleep. >> and that's what so many parents are going after here. when it comes to dosing, what do you have to think about for making sure that you're giving the right dose to your kids and for yourself. >> the most important thing is to have proper dosing utensils. so if a medication comes with a dropper or syringe or a cup you want to use the one that came with the medication. the other thing that i recommend is that you write down what medication you gave at what time. because, it's the middle of the night, you have two caregavers sometimes, you have a cold, you're in this foggy haze and you can't remember what you took when. so it's a good idea to write it down. >> dr. alana levine, thanks so much for being with us. for more on choosing the right medicine for your cold, go to our partner in health webmd.com and search cold medicine. coming up next, filing your tax return online. everything you need to know, like how to save hundreds of dollars, for example. you're watching "the early show" on cbs. ooo whatcha got there?

5:48 am
with tax season fast approaching now is a good time to start weighing your filing options. one of those options is filing online. which in many cases can be done for free. this year the irs expects more than 1 million people to use the internet to file. saving money, of course, always sounds good, but for those of us who are not so computer savvy, how tough is it and what's the best choice? aol consumer adviser regina lewis is here to walk us through it. >> thanks, russ. >> who benefits from this? >> actually, consumers benefit because it is the single fastest way to get your hands on the cash. three out of four taxpayers expecting a refund this year, if you file electronically, and have that direct deposited you can expect the money inside of ten days as opposed to four to six weeks. you're also, this is interesting, less likely to be audited because the error rate for doing your taxes online is 1%. as opposed to if you take out a pencil, 20%. people make math mistakes, they do their social security incorrectly. that's a pretty good draw. >> the forms look pretty tough
5:49 am
if you're looking at them on paper. are they really simple enough online? >> it's a great point. in fact, the actual number this year is 100 million people will file their taxes electronically. a third of them will do it personally. the others will have someone do it professionally. but the bottom line is, if you're working with an accountant, they're using these tools. but you're going to pay hundreds of dollars for them to use the same tools that are now readily available to consumers for less than $50. so it's certainly worth considering. i would say on average it's going to take you 30 or 40 minutes. but most of these sites are pretty intuitive. >> that's not bad at all. the irs, i understand, has a free site to do your taxes. >> they do and it is pretty much what you would expect from the irs. it's pretty bare bones. it's incredibly secure. if you make less than $58,000 you qualify for free federal returns. there is a nominal cost for state returns, and you'll see that across the board. that's because when you make a tax code change on the federal level, you can update the software once, obviously states, six of them don't even collect
5:50 am
income taxes, it gets a little bit more complicated so you're going to see a state fee in all cases. >> turbotax, we see their commercials all the time. they have some free services, as well. >> they do. they are the category leader far and away. they are the most intuitive in terms of use. if you're familiar with online banking you're going to find this a breeze. it works like a gps. it literally guides you through. you almost feel like they're taking a survey. you don't even see something that remotely resembles a tax form until you go to print it. so it takes all that form and formality out of it. >> as you said, they're the granddaddy. >> they are. >> any other big deals they offer? >> turbo tax has a guaranteed highest return rate. and they have a ticker. so as you're going through, they will adjust the numbers, if they're able to get you a higher refund and you will literally see that going up, up, up in the upper right-hand corner. >> this year for the first time i've seen h&r block doing ads on tv. >> they do. they have it on their website. although their big differentiator here is to still play into their store front. so they have something for $80
5:51 am
where you can start your taxes online, and then you can go to one of the h&r block stores and have someone review it and ultimately file it for you. it is still cheaper than walking in with your receipts and starting from scratch. >> of course. want to ask you about tax act. >> it's another player. tremendously secure. a little bit cheaper. i would call it the more bare bones model. but if you're really cost sensitive you can check out tax act, as well. >> regina lewis, thanks very much. for money saving tax advice all season long you can logon to our sister web site cbsmoneywatch.com. later gabrielle giffords' husband mark kelly will finally leave his wife's said to man the space shuttle "endeavour's" final mission. how difficult a decision was this for him? and what kind of impact could it have on her recovery? we'll talk to two close friends of the couple. you're watching "the early show" on cbs. instead of the same old -- with chili's new $6 lunch break combos. choose from a house salad or hot, tasty soup. then pair it with a massive texas toast half sandwich, like our delicious classic turkey
