murders last year is vowing not to let it happen again. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. a bay area community that was devastated by a series of problems last year is vowing not to let it happen again. don knapp is in south san francisco where people gathered for a community peace rally today. don? >> reporter: that's right, ann, we're on lyndon avenue which parallels 101 not far from the airport. and it is not far from where the people gathered today, and where the december shootings occurred. as you know, south san francisco is not a community known for gang violence, and homicides. and now that it has become known for that, people in the community organizing to try to make sure that reputation goes away. these south san francisco residents don't want another violent year like last year. they gathered to remember those

who were killed. >> their memory is going to be alive forever in this community. >> reporter: and to encourage neighbors to talk to one another. and rebuild their sense of community. >> reporter: there were six homicides last year, three on one night and possibly gang related. still unsolved are 21-year-old hechter floor ez and 18-year- old omar cortez and 19-year-old gonzalez avalar. and this woman lost a cuss ton violence earlier in the year. >> -- cousin to violence earlier in the year. >> it has been nine months since she passed away and the pain is still there. it hasn't changed at all. >> reporter: south san francisco believes it is the kind of place that can buck the trend and stop the violence. neighbors hope to draw strength from the strong sense of community. this plan declined to appear on camera. >> i've been here all my life, in this neighborhood the past 10 years and i plan on raising my daughter here and this is all i know, south city, and born and raised and i plan on dying here. regardless of what is going on, i can't turn my back from the town. >> i have been with the

department for 30 years and we have been dealing with the gang and an increase in violence. >> reporter: the police chief was born and raised in south san francisco. >> it is very sad to see this. it is a very good community. it is a very tight-knit neighborhood down here. as are all of the neighborhoods in south san francisco. so all i'm going to do is do the best i can to get it back to the level of people feeling safe on the streets. >> reporter: but he says the city council okayed four new police officers, and he will put them in neighborhoods identified as gang territory. stopping the violence can't come soon enough for this woman. >> we're just going day by day. the pain will never go away. >> reporter: police are still seeking help in the solving of the december shooting. they're asking anyone who may have information to give them a call on the tip line at 650-829- 3700. ann? >> don knapp in south san francisco, thank you. well, thousands of miles away from the conflict in cairo, protesters in san francisco are calling for

change in egypt. >> one, two, three, four. >> demonstrators near civic center today supported those who want egyptian president hosni new hosni mu mubarek to step down immediately and it continues with the protest in egypt despite government concessions and the son of hosni mubarak quit today and they're discussing democratic reforms with opposition leaders. the trial of three berkeley graduates in iran is set to start tomorrow. sara shourd and josh fatle and shane bower were arrested on the iran/iraq border in 2009 and shourd was released and returned to the united states and bower and fatal remain in prison. it is not known if shourd will return to iran for the trial. checking other bay area headlines, two men have reached a plea agreement in a case involving a crash that killed a san francisco police officer. three men were being chased in a stolen van when they slam nod

a patrol car -- slam nod a patrol car killing the officer back in 2006. and the driver is already serving a life sentence. and the two passengers have agreed to serve 15 years for voluntary manslaughter and robbery. and a minor shaker in contra costa county this morning. a 2.3 earthquake struck near alamo at about 10:20. no reports of damage or injuries. well, who needs football, and the super bowl, today, it was all about baseball, and fan fest. for the world champion giants. unfortunately, anne makovec says, too many people wanted to share the moment. at at&t park. >> i live the giants. breathe the giants. bleed the giants. >> it is that die-hard attitude that brought over 40,000 people to at&t park, for the giants annual fan fest. >> let's go, baby. number one! >> it is magic this time. >> reporter: but hundreds never made. it the park was overcapacity before noon. >> this is really a drag. >> reporter: hordes waited

outside, hoping things would clear up. >> i'm praying, i'm praying to god i get inside. >> reporter: even though some waited last night, they felt gilted from the crowd. >> and we are kind of getting screwed over because they're not letting us in. all of these people are cutting in front of us and they forced us back in line. >> reporter: inside, baseball utopia. >> i feel like a rock superstar here, you know. >> it is amazing. the fans deserve this. they take time for us and we take time for them. >> reporter: fans showing off everything from crabby costumes to high hair and fresh ink. >> a tattoo a whole new form of torture. >> you know, it is the buzzing sound that is really the pain. >> reporter: and all of the big stars were giving autographs as long as you were willing to wait. >> the lines are three hours to four hours long. we will catch a buzz, that's all we will get here today. >> reporter: the people so desperate for autographs, they wanted mine. >> you're welcome.

a couple hundred people turned out. the mayor and her department heads discussed everything from public safety, to the need for a major grocery store. >> what we hope will come out of this meeting is that we're going to get very concrete ideas of things we can do together, not just a list of things for the mayor to do, but things that we as a community can do together, that the city together with the neighbors can make a real difference. >> mayor quan plans to host at least one town hall meeting each month in districts across oakland. and oakland city attorney says he will no longer advise the city council about its plans to license industrial pot farms. john russo notified mayor quan about his decision this week. just days ago, a federal prosecutor warned oakland that the large scale farms are illegal and that farmers, property owners, and financiers could face prosecution. well, san jose police are trying a new tactic to connect with the community and recruit

new officers. kit has the first of its kind reality series that shows you what it is like to be a cop. >> i will go right now and i will get my gun. >> san jose police want to win your hearts and minds by showing you what is going on in theirs. >> step into the blue. >> reporter: "step into the blue" is a 10-part documentary produced by san jose police. >> don't do this at home. >> reporter: following recruits as they undergo six grueling months of police training. unprecedented behind the scenes access shows serious and light- hearted moments like this when the recruits laughingly cry when they inhale tear gas. >> is it fair to say that the department is turning over a new leaf with these videos? >> we're going down a new road with them, absolutely. >> reporter: several incidents have hurt the department's image. including this 2009 cell phone video of officers tasing and

beating a vietnamese exchange student. and this 2006 footage, showing officers in riot gear, swinging batons, and chasing black students out of downtown. the department says the new videos are a long-term effort and not a knee-jerk reaction. >> we should always be willing to extend the olive branch. and educate the public as to what we do and why we do it. >> there is a pretty deep mistrust in the community. >> richard conda with the asian law alliance is one of the department's sharpest critics on the treatment of minorities. and even though one of the episodes highlights the officer's cultural sensitivity training, conda says it is not enough. >> i talked to people in the community, and they say they're really afraid to call the police. and that's not good. i mean people shouldn't be fearful of the police. i'm not sure that this kind of video really leads us toward rebuilding trust. >> reporter: a new episode will be released every other week, on flip.tv and youtube. joe mcnamara is a former san jose police chief and says cops

just about everybody will be indoors tomorrow afternoon watching a certain football game. so hopefully you got outside today. >> yeah. >> it was glorious. >> oh, man. and with today, the weather, you will like tomorrow, also. and it is going to be gorgeous again, folks. of course, today, what a day it was. record-breaking high temperatures. and offshore winds blowing and beautiful all the way to the coastline. i think the big concern overnight tonight will be some of the offshore winds and otherwise, a few high clouds drifting overhead but the skies really staying mostly clear throughout the evening and i think we're looking good. the winds are going to howl. you get above 1,000 feet or talk about strong gusty winds and the wind advisory has gone up for much of the bay area hilltops as we're expecting strong gusty winds developing and sustained 25-35 miles an

hour and gusts to 45 and maybe up to 55 miles an hour across some of the higher peaks so it is blowing pretty good and down below, looking fantastic and you got to get a sense of this. take a look at the satellite image and show you what we're talking about as the clouds are on top of the ridge and the ridge is nice and strong for the weekend. it will hold on and bring you lots of sunshine tomorrow. a little on the breezy side. but 70s and low 80s. this is maybe another record breaker. and 60s and 70s inside the bay out toward the coastline once again. and speaking of records, it was impressive today. 75, set a record of san jose, and 77 in oakland, and just matching the old record of 67 degrees. and 73, that was a record in san francisco, and 80 degrees today in santa rosa. another record. records falling all around the bay area. numbers working out like this elsewhere. 76 degrees livermore. and 72 degrees in pacifica. and 77 in san rafael. what a day it was. and more on the way for tomorrow. and very mild across much of the bay area right now, and most temperatures are in the 60s, and even some low 70s and

it looks like we're headed for a great evening and a nice day around the state tomorrow, and 71 in sacramento, and about 63 degrees in fresno and beautiful and sunny in the high country and the ridge is very impressive, of course, much of the country in the deep freeze and we have the huge ridge of high pressure along the west coast that keeps it up, high and dry and no threat of rain but that will likely change as we head toward the latter part of next week. in the meantime, the offshore wind will continue to blow overnight and the biggest concern but down below and we see the low clouds and the fog, here comes the sunshine again. that should be enough to crank up the numbers near record levels as we head toward the afternoon. and how about this? 78 degrees. morgan hill, about 75. santa clara about, 76, union city. and 75 degrees in redwood city. east bay numbers, also warming up very nicely. in toward the afternoon. 76 in walnut creek. and about 76 degrees in oakland. and 77 in san leandro. north bay again, some of the hottest temperatures around the bay area. about 81 degrees. and in sant row sax the same in napa. and -- santa rosa.

the sharks are playing their best hockey of the season and as we have the sharks. they're looking pretty good. >> thank goodness for the sharks, because football season about to end tomorrow for everyone. the sharks are playing their best hockey of the season. as a result, they vaulted up to fourth place in the western conference. returning to boston, for the third time, since being traded to the sharks, this player, logan coture was back in the lineup after missing two games with the flu and he gets one past tim thomas, the nhl's best goalie. number 23 for couture. and 1-0 sharks. playing with thomas in the opposite net brought the best out of this player. he turned back all 26 shots by the bruins. for his third shutout of the season. and still 1-0 late in the third. when devon setaguchi steals it for the sharks with the empty- netter and they beat the bruins 2-0 and won seven of the last eight. rickey fowler doing his
