the answer now is go but not yet. the white house admitted monday it does not endorse mubarak's immediate resignation. the obama administration is throwing its support behind the newly appointed vice president, but he says egypt isn't ready for democracy. all of this flies in the face of protestors as they've been on the streets now for 15 days. terry mccarthy has the latest. >> reporter: the protesters are still here in the square behind me. in fact, many of them slept out in what is becoming a virtual tent city in what is normally a busy public traffic square. in the battle of wills that is developing, the government has announced a pay rise of 15% for public servants. presumably to win their sympathies. and it has announced the stock market will reopen here next sunday. meanwhile, the uprising that has been largely leaderless has finally found its first hero. wael ghonim.

he's a google executive in jail for 12 days for his involvement in coordinating the demonstrations on facebook. after significant outside pressure and the intervention of a wealthy local businessman, he was released monday evening, much to the delight of his many social network fans across egypt and also his mother. i want to put a sign on my chest, she says, that reads i'm the mother of a hero. wael ghonim tried to be humble. i'm not a hero, he says. i'm a very ordinary person. the heros are the ones in the street. but the protesters in tahrir square need their heros. as they continue to demand real change from a government that appears to be digging in its heels. the protesters are calling for another mass demonstration, but it remains to be seen how many they can get to turn out. >> terry mccarthy, thank you. to the weather now and another blast of arctic-like air that will blanket a large part

of the country. temperatures are expected to plummet in more than half the country, that includes places already reeling from a string of brutal winter storms and once again the south is going to get hit hard. >> this cold air has been building up across the northwest territories and all you need is a storm system to take that cold air and bring it south and that's exactly what we're going to be having here over the next couple of days. >> tennessee is already feeling the effects. in chicago, another morning of single digit temperatures is expected. no leads or suspects in the shooting death of three teenage boys in a mexican border town. two of the victims were u.s. citizens. the three were looking at a car dealership across the border from el paso. one victim was a student at cathedral high school in el paso. last year more than 3,000 people were killed in juarez, most related to drug use. today the government plans to release its report on those unintended accelerations in toyotas. the throttle problems forced the

auto giant to recall more than a million of its vehicles and pay hefty fines. >> reporter: and toyota says that it hasn't been totally able to put their recall mess behind it, but it is moving in the right direction regaining customer trust. the company itself is awaiting the government's report today. today's government report could reveal the source of toyota's troubles. transportation officials are expected to release the findings of their ten month investigation in to reports of sudden unintended acceleration, including whether faulty electronics were to blame. since the fall of 2009, toyota has recalled more than 11 million vehicles to fix various safety issues, including sticky gas pedals and problematic floor mats. the defects are possibly linked to 93 u.s. deaths, including a fatal 2009 high speed crash outside san diego. >> our accelerator is stuck. >> i'm sorry? >> our accelerator is stuck.

>> reporter: toyota has paid the government nearly $50 million in record fines for its handling of the recalls. just last year, company executives testified before congress that the problem had nothing to do with electronics. >> we've done extensive testing on the system and we've never found a malfunction that's caused unintended acceleration. >> reporter: the automaker says it has installed brake override systems on all new vehicles. still, the company faces scores of potentially devastating lawsuits that could further damage its reputation and bottom line. just this morning, toyota reported a 39% drop in its quarterly profit. and it's not all bad news for toyota. the company sees a brighter outlook for the rest of the year and that's primarily thanks to a recovery in the worldwide auto industry. president obama's reception at the u.s. chamber of commerce

can be best described as polite. they had a less than cordial relationship. monday's visit is the president's effort at fence mending. alexis christoforous has that story. >> reporter: president obama walked the block for a neighborly call on american business leaders. >> maybe if we brought over a fruitcake when i first moved in, we would have gotten off to a better start. >> reporter: the president and the business community have had a rocky relationship for the last two years, butting heads over financial regulations and the health care overhaul. now both sides are looking to work together. >> if i've got one message, my message is now is the time to invest in america. >> reporter: president obama argued businesses have a responsibility to help the u.s. economy. he called on executives to start using the nearly $2 trillion on their balance sheets to create jobs. the president pledged to help american businesses compete with a change in the corporate tax code and a push for more exports. but he warned that shouldn't

translate into more record wall street profits and big bonuses. >> they have to be shared by american workers who need to know that expanding trade and opening markets will lift their standards of living as well as your bottom line. >> reporter: republicans contend the president is crushing the business community under stifling regulations and market watchers aren't ready to put much stock in president obama's promises. >> i'm not so certain that he's convinced anybody that he's really changed. the speech was long on good feelings and happiness and a little short on specifics. >> reporter: but the chamber is flying a massive jobs banner on the outside of its building and both sides hope that by working together, they can put millions of unemployed americans back to work. alexis christoforous, cbs news, new york. just ahead on the morning news on this tuesday, good news about eggs. they may be healthier than we thought. plus, a convenience store robber with manners. we'll show you the video that went viral.

pushed stocks higher. the dow climbed 69 points while the nasdaq added 14. americans are breaking out the plastic. after two years of cutting back, credit card debt rose 3.5% in december, a sign consumers feel more confident about the economy and their own finances. but even with the gains, consumer borrowing is still nearly 7% below the high set back in 2008. the smart phone revolution is far from over. according to the research firm idc, smart phones are now outselling personal computers. a milestone that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. but that also makes them more of a target this morning. the mcafee anti-virus company warned that cyber threats to mobile devices are on the rise. if you've ever bought a phone or computer only for a new and improved version to come out right after, best buy is trying to help. under its new buy back program, the chain agreed to buy back certain products within a limited time. customers can get a partial refund based on how quickly they return the item.
