every day. that is the battle over the thermostat. women apparently like it a lot warmer than men do. men like cold temperatures. >> it's a battle waged not just in the home but in the workplace as many of us in the studio can attest to, mr. i like it like a meat locker wragge. >> i think everyone in the studio looks great in this studio in ski jackets. it is an issue a lot of people fight over each and every day. >> a good reason behind it. >> we will talk about that coming up. first, president obama continues his effort to make peace with big business. yesterday, he spoke before the chamber of commerce, a group he has battled ever since he took office. senior white house correspondents bill plante has the details for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning, chris. it's a chesty relationship. the chamber spent heavily to get the new republican congress elected last year. but now it's time for both to move on and so, yesterday, the president walked from his office across the square which separates the white house from the chamber.

the president's message to business? it's time to put their mountain of extra cash to work. >> now is the time to invest in america. today, american companies have nearly $2 trillion sitting on their balance sheets. maybe if we had brought over a fruitcake when i first moved in, we would have gotten off to a better start. >> reporter: mr. about him pledged to work on lowering federal spending' revising the corporate tax code and eliminating some federal regulations but warns there are limits. >> america's businesses have a responsibility as well to recognize that there are some basic safeguards, some basic standards that are necessary to protect the american people from harm or exploitation. >> reporter: that wasn't the president's only reminder that he believes business has an obligation to share the benefits of government regulation. >> if we're fighting the reform, the tax code, and increase exports to help you compete, the benefits can't just translate

into greater profits and bonuses for those at the top. >> reporter: the president also made no apologizes for his health care bill to an audience whose members have been trying to kill the law since it was passed last year. >> we simply could not continue to accept a status quo has made our entire economy less competitive as we have paid more per person for health care than any other nation on earth. >> reporter: despite that, there is a lot of distrust on both sides. well, as the president looks forward to his re-election campaign, he stands to benefit from any perceived move toward business, benefit with independents and republicans. chris? >> cbs bill plante, thank you. joining is business and economic correspondent rebecca jarvis. how was this speech received in the business community? >> the business community is hesitant. they like the concessions and like some of the tax breaks that have been afforded them by the administration but they are looking for more and they don't

want to be told what to do. they don't want to have the president's timetable dictate when they hire. they want to have their shareholders and their business dictate it. >> now, companies have done well and cut a lot of jobs as we have seen over the years. but their balance sheets showing record profits. wall street is doing very well. can a speech like this have any impact on these business leads to go out and hire more people? >> ultimately i think has the biggest impact and what business leaders tell me every day is demand. they need to see demand for their products come back that will necessitate greater hiring on their part. they have cut costs and employees because the economy has necessitated it according to them. they are not going to pick it up again until demand comes back and we are seeing that from companies like ford which says maybe we will hire new people because we have more cars wanted by the american public. >> let's talk credit cards for a moment now. last couple of years we have seen people pull back on using their credit cards but now it looks like people are starting to borrow and use them nor. >> consumer credit jumped in

december 3.5%. a sign people are feeling a little bit more positive about the economy. that's a good thing on its face. we need consumers to spend. but we don't want them overspending because that is what got us in this problem in the first place. >> now let's at all about the market. again, it's these mixed messages. we see the market with a closing yesterday 2 1/2 year high but the unemployment numbers and job numbers are stagnant. for the people at home that are wondering is this good, is this bad for the economy? what is actually going on? >> i mean, ultimately when you look at the stock market it is telling you that corporations, corporate america is doing pretty well. they have found ways to do more with less. that does not mean that the jobs picture is going to be better. and sometimes what you see in a recovery is that the stock market improves, the corporations in america improve and then eventually the jobs market improves. >> i guess one last question for you. i'm not expecting you to look into a crystal ball. what does this say about stocks as we look forward? >> you're going to make me do this, chris! i think what is says it that when you look at it historically, where we are in the recovery and what has happened to stocks, we still

have a ways to go. that said, it cannot necessarily happen without pullbacks along the way. if you're an average investor and putting money in this market be prepared to lose some in the near term. longer term, you're better off. >> rebecca jar rvijarvis, thank. here is jeff glor with more headlines. we begin here with the latest on the crisis in egypt. protesters continue calling for president mubarak to step down. the white house says if he were to leave office too soon, it might set back the country's transition to democracy. cbs news correspondent terry mccarthy is in cairo this morning. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, jeff. the protests have called for another mass demonstration today. 15th day of this uprising and some thought they might lose energy. you can see behind me the square is, yet again, filling up with tens of thousands of people. this morning, the demonstrators

awoke they found a first hero, ghonim a google executive jailed 12 days and most of that time blindfolded for his involvement in coordinating the demonstrations on facebook. he was released monday evening much to the delight of many social network fans across egypt and also his mother. i want to put a sign on my chest, she says that reads i'm the mother of a hero. after his release, ghonim treated freedom is a blessing that deserves fighting for but in his first press appearance he tried to be humble. i'm not a hero, he says. i'm a very ordinary person. heroes are the ones in the street. but those weary protesters are digging in for the long hall in the square. they have been organizing wash facilities in public and wringing electrical lines from utility posts to recharge their

reynolds is in chicago this morning with the very latest. dean, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, the weather headline today is that winter is not winding down just yet. and still has a lot of pain to inflict. what the perth service is calling a rather stubborn arctic air mass is again cascading down from canada and will hit more than half the country, causing temperatures to plummet and bringing more snowstorms along with it. >> i'm fed up with winter and ready for my summer! >> reporter: the cold shoulder will, once again, make the south feel more like the south pole. >> this cold air has been building up across the northwest territories and all you need is a storm system to take that cold air and bring it south and that is exactly what we're going to be having here. >> reporter: oklahoma, which is still digging out from last week's blizzard, is getting hit again, as is north texas. dallas, which experienced a freak snowfall in time for the super bowl now has sleet and ice

it's 7:25. time for news headlines from cbs 5. i'm sydnie kohara. bay area students who fell ill after visiting a marin science camp have tested positive for the norovirus. 50 adults and students reported feeling flu-like symptoms last week. this was the second time students became sick after visiting the walker creek camp. the illness likely spread directly between children rather than through contaminated food or water. walnut creek is banning those inflatable jump houses from all city parks. city leaders say they don't have the staff or resources to regulate them anymore. and they also claim that the bounce houses destroy city lawns, take up staff time and can make parks less enjoyable for others. it is back to san quentin today for the federal judge who closed california's death chamber five years ago.

headlines. after being kidnapped 23 years ago, carlina white finally found her birth parents. her father had never given up hope. we'll speak with him in just a moment. first, though, jeff glor has more on the story. jeff, good morning again. >> police say that ann pettway confessed to the 1987 abduction of carlina white who was just 19 days old at the time. pettway reportedly told investigators she did it because she had trouble having children of her own. >> reporter: pettway is waiting indictment on federal kidnapping charge for the disappearance of carlina white. the charges which could come at any time carry a penalty of at least 20 years in prison and possible life. >> why is the punishment so tough in kidnapping? most would say because it's about as close as one gets to the crime of murder. the harm is done to both the par parents and the child. >> reporter: white who was raised as nejdra nance always

suspected she wasn't her mother because she couldn't provide a birth certificate. and last month while searching the internet, white found a baby picture of herself on the website for national center for missing an exploited children. after contacting authority, dna tests confirmed her suspicions. as carlina enjoyed a tearful reunion with her biological parents, pettway turned herself into police and reportedly confessed. >> she's upset. she's concerned about the impact this has on all the members of her family. >> reporter: now as white and her real family look for a new life together, they're still left looking for answers. >> i just want to know why. >> reporter: during her confession, pettway reportedly told investigators that in 1987, she went to harlem hospital posing as a nurse, snatching the baby because she had trouble conceiving a child of her own. citing several miscarriages. while the decades long mystery has been solved, psychologists say the long term effects will linger. >> there will be a lot of anxiety, there will be a lot of depression because in some ways

i just wish she was close to me so i could reach out and touch her. >> you have three other kids, too. this is a big adjustment for everyone involved. how are they handling the fact that they are finally meeting their sister that they knew about but didn't know where she was? >> well, jackie is handling it. jackie is the oldest. she's handling well. but carl and kayla didn't want to see her. jackie is in tampa, so the two little one, they are doing the same thing, they're texting. so that's a great thing. >> and it seems like, jen, the best way to start this because it's so much for everyone would to be do things slowly. >> absolutely. and i think that it sounds like that's exactly what's happening. it's hard to text, a whole different generation of interaction, and what a great way to start to get to know one another and that is how her generation certainly

communicates. so the slower going it is, the easier it is to build just like you would a new friendship. it's a relationship that has not been present for such a long time, so it sounds like you're all handling that part of it really well and that's so smart. it will be better for the long term. >> has it been easily for you? you both have so many questions. is there anything that's been tough for you to broach as a subject with her? >> yes, because you have to watch certain things you want to say. like i can't talk about the things that happened because she don't want to discuss that. so now i just got to move forward step by step. she's 23, so it's like kind of hard to say to a grown up that you haven't seen since she was a baby. so it's you have tough. but i'm trying. >> and in that 23 year that other family shaped who she is as a person. is she very different from your own children or was she raised in a different manner than you were raising your kids? >> they all got the same

attitude. i know that. >> that's universal. >> like i said, it's 23 years. so i know how i raised the ones with me, but i can say one hinge i give to ann pettway, she did have her for 23 -- she raised her. she could have done it in another way. so i'm glad she's here. >> when you think about ann pettway, what would you like to see happen to her? >> you're in 23. she took 23 from me, so she needs 23. >> 23 behind bars. >> yes, definitely. >> would take help you at all? would it make you feel somewhat whole again or is that something that conditions an't be repaire? >> it can't be repaired, so she got to have the 23. that's all i can ask for. but it will never take me all the way back to that time

women who bleed heavily with their periods or who have fiber resides can definitely run a little anemic, and women over the age of 50, very commonly can have an under active thyroid. both can make you feel colder inappropriately almost. very easy to diagnose with a simple mrood test and eeasy to treat. >> that can bring some peace to your home. there could be some benefits too to it being chilier whenever you are. >> brown fat. babies are born with brown fat because they can't shiver to keep themselves warm. it's metabolically active. it works like a furnace in our bodies. we lose it as we age, but there is some new research that shows that if we're exposed to slightly colder temperatures around 63 to 66 degrees fahrenheit, we can actually stimulate the production of brown fat and burn more calories. that is a silver lining. >> that is a silver lining. it's not an excuse, chris, to keep it like a meat locker, however. for those of us that are perhaps a little challenged in the warmth department, best ways for us to stay warm.

the recent announcement that the postal service wants to start closing 2,000 post offices leads to the inevitable question are the brick and mortar buildings still necessary? michelle miller is outside the maplewood new jersey branch with that story for us this morning. michelle, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. closing a post office by law is a tough thing to do. so along with considering those 2,000 closures, congress is looking at a bill that would make it easier to shut down underperforming branches. that would drastically reduce the physical presence of the post office and could signal the beginning of the end of a branch near you. neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. that unofficial creed has guided

everyone by the recession. people are mailing less. and then just in general, the kin digital revolution, that's hurting mail volumes. >> reporter: add to that the exploding cost in retiree health care and the problem could go from bad to worse. federal laws mandate universal service and restricts the closing of offices for economic reasons. but congress is in a cost cutting mood and recently proposed legislation may make those familiar brick and mortar buildings a thing of the past. so in addition to the 2,000 branches now in jeopardy, there are another 16,000 under review. the cuts are aimed at mostly rural communities and suburban neighborhoods like mine, folks are not going to let this go town without a fight. they say that these offices are an essential form of the federal government and they're a part of their community. it's what makes their community whole. so, chris, folks will fight it.

i picked grits because i love grits. i've never made them, but i really enjoy eating them. it's not that i can't make them, i just don't have time. >> obviously. and grits do take time. >> they do. for folks who aren't familiar with them, we know they're big in the south, but if you've never made grits before, what are grits? >> grits are basically dried corn that's been ground and the way they're made makes them a little bit more healthy for you by the way they're ground up, it releases more new reenteutriente corn. the things that we put into the grits are the things that aren't good for us. so for me, when i make grits, i got to tell you, the main hinge abo thing is you got to salt the water. because if you make grits and then try to salt them, it's never going to happen.because i
