you're watching cbs5 eyewitness news "this broadcast realtime captioned by becky lyon." protestors in egypt saying it is a new beginning for them now that hosni mubarak has stepped down after nearly 30 years as president. egypt's military now heading the country and promises an eventual transition to an elected government. thousands of egyptians have begun cleaning up cairo's central square. it was the main site of antigovernment protests for 19 days. in the meantime protestors are calling for a roll in the transition to democracy. good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. ann notarangelo is off today. some egyptians in the east bay are feeling mixed emotions

tonight about their country's future. >> reporter: in this orthodox church in hayward, half a world away from the jubilation in cairo, egypt, mixed reaction to the revolution. >> today is an awesome day. >> to be honest i wasn't sure if it was exactly the right thing we were doing. >> very excited. so emotional. >> we are not so excited about all the change. >> reporter: and the future is unknown as the country now gets its chance to elect its new leader. >> we are looking for nonreligious. >> reporter: afraid the new government could be run by extremists. >> have strong personalitieses in egypt. >> reporter: egyptians in america and abroad don't know what the future will look like. >> you can't wish the exact american lifestyle on a country that is so different. >> after all the festivities

egyptian americans and their supporters waved egyptian flags at a rally at the united nation's plaza. calling on egypt to reform its government and ensure human rights protections for its people. authorities have found a body believed to be the suspected kidnapper of a 4-year- old central california boy. don knapp tells us how the gruesome discovery was made. >> reporter: police pulled jose rodriguez' body from the canal. police have been searching for 4-year-old juliani cardenas and rodriguez since the boy's grandmother reported that rodriguez had forcefully taken the boy from his arms on january 18th. a few days after the car was recovered his small body was found voting downstream. now a body matching the

physical description of clothing of rodriguez. >> he drove in. we believe his intent was to deprive tab atha of her 4-year- old son. >> reporter: rodriguez was her former boyfriend but is not related to her son juliani cardenas. last evening in patterson family and friends celebrated juliani cardenas' short life. about 1000 people gathered at patterson high school's football stadium to remember the boy with songs and stories, love and tears. >> and although juliani cardenas' life was short it was very joyous. and filled with love each and every day. police are waiting for a positive identification of the body found in the canal today. it seems very likely it was that of the kidnapper and perhaps the story is coming to an end. >> don knapp, thank you. one day after a deadly officer-involved shooting in solono county a call for witnesses to come forward.

vallejo police shot and killed a 45-year-old man after they say he got out of a car and pointed a gun at them. it happened after a brief police chase in the north end of town late yesterday afternoon. a passenger who jumped out of the man's car was detained and released before the shooting. police are now looking for him for questioning. meanwhile vallejo police are offering a $50,000 reward for information in a murder a year and a half ago. in november 2009 gunmen shot and killed 19-year-old ivan orosko while he protected his girlfriend during a robbery on 6th and cherry streets. his girlfriend was not hurt. the state granted the reward after the police investigation hit a dead end. also in solono county, a parolee is under arrest suspected in the first homicide of the year in one city there. police found the body of 26- year-old katherine gila han on her home on military east by jefferson street last night. officers arrested her boyfriend at a nearby taco bell parking

lot. disa and jillian lived together. he confessed to the killing police say. but they are not saying how the woman died. also near the scene of that murder police arrested this man early this morning. michael pendergas is suspected of stabbing a man in the chest. no connection to last night's murder though. a murder investigation underway in san francisco. officers responding to a well being check and found a 65-year- old man's body in an apartment by jones in the lord knob hill neighborhood last night. police say there are obvious signs of trauma. no word yet on any arrests. oscar grant's family reaches out to the community. how they are turning their heartbreak into a chance to help others. also, a breath taking sight

new year's day 2009 but johannes mehserle following a fight on a train. 125 troops said their farewells this afternoon as they prepared for deployment to afghanistan. the 352nd combat support hospital consistents of doctors, nurses, x-ray technicians. they leave dublin tonight and head to ft. lewis and from there they go straight to afghanistan to support operation enduring freedom. >> we were very excited to get our soldiers mobilized and out the door and we look forward to them coming back to their families and we appreciate their sacrifice. >> their tour of duty is expected to last one year. most are from the bay area. chinatown has a group of volunteers to thank for making the area looking beautiful. today volunteers picked up

litter and got rid of grafitti. the public works department asked them to come out and celebrate chinese new year's to make the city more clean. the san francisco mayor kicked off today's event. >> i want to make sure that everybody knows that beautifying our neighborhood is the number 1 objective of our dream team but building that partnership is so important throughout the stadium. we will do more of that in this coming year. and this was the city's first community team event of the year. a lunch and performance by chinese lion dancers and children's activities followed their busy cleanup day. the south bay got into the spirit of chinese new year's today treated to the booming drum beats and lion dancing. chinese new year themed floats circled the shopping center for everyone to see.

spotted a pod talk about an amazing day on the bay for dozens of tourists who spotted a pot of orca near the golden gate bridge. it looked like the larger male on the outside protecting moms and calves but soon it came close where tourists got a closer look. >> they would go underneath us. it was unreal. >> it was phenomenal. you can't -- you couldn't have planned it. >> the tour was a treat for the mother and daughter who share a birthday and now share a special memory. the pod has been seen in the bay area in the monterey bay just a few days ago. tour operators believe they could still be in the area hunting for salmon. how cool is that. >> they hope they are. they will fill those boats there a hurry, huh?

>> you can take the credit. >> what better place to be. >> until. >> until it looks like things change. folks, another gorgeous day outside. high pressure still in control. but beginning to show signs now of weakening just a bit and that will allow cooler air to make its way onshore and bring down the temperatures. still, what a neat shot for you. sunset on the bay area. under nice clear skies. it has just been something else for about the last month and a half with the exception of a storm here or two. looking pretty good. that is changing. high pressure going to get out of the way and really probably some good news. we can use the rain now and looks like we will see plenty of it as we head. lots of sunshine coming your way. mostly sunny skies. maybe a few high clouds moving across our skies. patchy fog out toward the coastline. temperatures today pretty amazing. 72 degrees. record in livermore. 71 in santa rosa. 69 in napa. 68 degrees in redwood city. you get the idea. one of those nice days outside. well, things changing in a

hurry. we will be luck to even nip 60s. numbers in the central valley. 60s and 70s. high country looking pretty good at least for another day. but after that be careful if you're travelling in that direction. make sure you bring your chains. mixture of rain and snow as we head in toward monday. and then come tuesday i think that show gets going all across the sierra nevada. heavy snow throughout that week. this ridge that has been really sitting along the west coast for some time now making its way. pounded by a couple of systems off the coast listen. eventually going to break it down and temperatures will cool off a bit more especially towards the coastline and likely to see patchy fog. computer models picking up on some of that. seabreeze kicking in. that will cool down the numbers outside as we take you through the day. you'll still see lots of sunshine inside the bay and many of the valleys but temperatures will be noticeably cooler in most spots. out towards the beaches plan on 50s mainly for highs. as high as 69 in morganhill.
