especially with big dogs. and it can be disconcerting for people who don't know the dog. first of all, start with the very basics of commands. should you always teach your dog how to sit, stay, down, come and heel. and if you have those basics, then you have a found indication to direct your dog to the positive behavior as opposed to the negative. if your dog is jumping, give them a firm no and you stand perfectly still until the dog gets down and they'll wonder why have you become a tree. and when they get down, you treat them. clicker training is very good for this. another good thing to do is to teach the dog that urt head of the pack. so when you come home, make the arrival a calm arrival. dogs come to the door and go hi, hi, hi, and they jump all over you. don't look at them, make no eye contact, go do your mail and do
8:48 am
your business and when they calm down, then say hello. that teaches them that the big hellos aren't appropriate. >> here's a question from tammy. >> when i put food out for my dog, why does he swallow it instead of chewing it expecting more to come? >> another big problem especially with big dogs. this is important because with large dogs that have deep chests like great danes, golden retrievers, they can get something called bloat. veterinarians call it gastric dilatation. that is a life threatening country. so slow down the feeding process. buy a raised food ball that will help to prevent bloat. and then have a food bowl that makes them slow down. here is one that has these little compartments so the dog has to eat around to get to the food. or get some tennis bowls and throw them in. they have to eat around the tennis bowls. and feed smaller meals during the day.
