take a look at this chilly weather pattern around the bay. definitely lots of cold air. >> we're breaking records here! >> we're setting records. hard freeze around the bay area. expect temperatures that cold again tomorrow morning. moisture tapers off rapidly through the overnight, didn't leave much in the way of sea level snowfall. >> we did see flurries in the morning. >> you were up very early. the top weather story's really the cold. frost on cars and reports of black ice on some roads. christian ayers is in walnut creek to let us know how cold it is in her location. you look all bundled up out there! >> reporter: definitely bundled up. i'm not the only one. we talked to a lot of people out here bundled up. that's because the temperature plummeted overnight and this morning. this display mind me was showing about 2 hours ago the temperature at 0 degrees

celsius, 33 degrees fahrenheit, so officially freezing. but you really didn't have to look at the temperature gauge to know that it was freezing this morning. people all over the east bay, waking up to cars and roof tops covered in a coat of frost. we saw police cars that had been staying out all night frosted up. some drivers didn't have scrapers and poured water on the defroster until it melted. those who were out this morning were donning layers, hats, earmuffs and scarves. the snow never quite materialized here, although we talked to people who hoped it would. here's how people were changing their wardrobes in order to deal with the cold weather. >> thermals, pants have lining in them, socks, just too many clothes. >> it's warm one day and then it's cold the next. i mean, what is it last week

people were in their bathing suits? we were talking about let's go swimming and now it's supposedly snowing or going to snow. >> reporter: and, again, that snow never quite materialized. despite some people's hope. we did speak to one person who said one recommendation if you're going to be out, just stay home. my recommendation, since i have to be out here, put these on. these are hand warmers. i've got them in my pocket, keeping me warm out here. i think good advice for anyone who has to be out. >> very good call. it's difficult if you don't have all the stuff to bundle up. stores are barely selling it, moving into their spring collections. we're left unprepared. thank you for that. there was a light dusting this morning, we talked about the snow in the higher levels of san francisco. the twin peaks and mer set heights neighborhood. snow fell around 1:00 a.m., the

first flurries in the city in 35 years. forecasters have been predicting a very good chance of snow for the past several days because of an air mass that was much colder than most weather systems that travel across the bay area. this morning, the highway patrol has been dealing with multiple accidents in solano county because of black ice. one crash happened on highway 37 in vallejo near the napa river bridge, involving one vehicle. a short time after that accident, cal tran placed sand on the roadway. in another incident, a car flipped onto its side and into a field. those were two of a number of accidents being reported this morning because of slippery roads. that black ice, very dangerous. no immediate word on any injuries. and jim, sound like that black ice is going to be allowed to stick around with the temperatures that we have been seeing. >> well, indeed. we've got very cold temperatures out there. hard freeze throughout the bay area, into the mid-20s out across the north bay here, and those temperatures will likely

repeat themselves tomorrow. so anything that's wet, first thing in the morning you can count on being icy. as we look from our vaca cam, we see a mix of clouds out there, still precipitation flying. but it's mainly confined to the shoreline at this point and moving to the south. as we take a look at the temperature map outside around the bay this morning, we'll see currently looking at mid to upper 20s for the colder locations, mainly in the north bay. but even right at the water, around the bay, oakland at 34, as is fremont, downtown fran at 37. definitely a chilly start to the day, with lots of patchy ice out there, so heads-up, caution advised as you're traveling around. it will be that cold again tomorrow. but the precipitation is winding down and we'll take a look at all of that for you, coming up a little later. meantime, a winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10:00 this morning down in the santa cruz mountains. a few inches accumulated in the area last night. among highway 17, a thin layer

of powder near the summitt. snow plows are standing by and some snow seekers were anxiously waiting for falling flakes. one woman drove up from san jose to experience snowfall for the first time. >> do you see it? >> we heard -- oh, crap! i'm sorry! oh, my god! i'm icy wet, right in my eyeball! it just went in my eye! >> the snow finally started falling around 8:30 last night. up to 4 inches of snow fell in certain parts of the area, depending on the elevation. more snow showers are expected this morning. across the santa clara valley east of san jose, mount hamilton has its share of snow. i was up there yesterday and we shot some of this video. new snow did fall over the past 24 hours, adding to what was there from previous storms. because mount hamilton road is narrow and very windy, people are being told to go up there not to check out the snow.

cal tran closed mount hamilton road just east of quinnby road just a few hours ago. in mirren county, chp is reporting black ice on the onramp from ignacio boulevard on the southbound 101. solano county, there is black ice on the ramp from eastbound highway 37 to columbus parkway. drive carefully out there. that black ice can sneak up on you. the snow in the meantime keeps piling up in the sierra. that's where we expect it to pile up. ski areas in the truckie and tahoe areas are report 2 to 4 feet of new snow over the past two days. road conditions in the area have been changing rapidly. right now, chains are required on interstate 80 east of nyack towards southlake tahoe. nearly four years since allegations of gang rape against several members of the college baseball team, a public trial is being held before a

jury in san jose. that began yesterday afternoon in civil court, because former santa clara county dv delores carr said in 2007 there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute anyone on criminal charges. she says that is because nearly everyone involved in the incident had been drinking heavily. the alleged victim has filed a lawsuit seeking millions from the accused baseball player. volunteers in oakland's lake merritt area are handing out whistles, hoping to keep people safe after several attacks on women that we have been reporting. the community group lake neighbors also gave out information last night to people passing by. police joined them on a march around the area. members hope that by getting to know each other, they will have a better chance of protecting themselves. >> we have a lot of people coming by and a lot of people saying they were very thankful that we were here, very thankful to get the information, and i think just seeing our presence out on the street made people feel like they are part of something bigger and not alone.

>> this week, police released this surveillance video of a person of interest in a sexual assault earlier this movement the description of that man you see there matches the description of the three other attacks dating back to september. all of those incidents were in the lake merritt area. a dealy city councilwoman will have to leave office. maggie gomez pleaded no contest to two counts of workers' compensation fraud, just a week before she was to go on trial for 16 felony charges that could have sent her to jail for five years. prosecutors sago messes was videotaped exercising and lifting groceries, activities she claims she couldn't do because of her injury. her claim was filed in 2005 when she worked for sutton medical center. under the plea agreement, gomez faces six months in jail for making false insurance to obtain insurance. until state law, elected officials must be removed from office when convicted of a felony. today in tripoli, libya,

colonel moammar gadhafi is arming civilians. truckloads of people are patrolling the streets now. gadhafi said, quote, we will open the arms depot to all libyans and tribes become armed, end quote. proceed-regime me litsch sha militia men turned on people yesterday. no word on how many people were killed. in washington, president obama signed an executive order freezing the assets in the u.s. held by gadhafi and four of his children. and in new york today, the u.n. security council is meeting again to consider a travel ban and asset freeze against gadhafi and key members of his government. a high seas ferry chartered by the u.s. government finally arrived on the island of malta last night, carrying over 300 evacuees from libya, including almost 200 americans. it had been stuck in the tripoli harbor since wednesday because of rough water and high

winds in the area. about 40 of the americans arriving in malta were government officials, including staff from the u.s. embassy at tripoli. the charter plane also left libya on friday with the rest of the u.s. diplomatic personnel. back to our main story around here, certainly the weather, the flakes flying overnight, and the cold. >> you know, it started this morning, workers told me they thought it was christmas. they got up to see the snow and there wasn't any. >> a little disappointing. had you to travel to see a lot of it. >> but it was cold. >> some flakes flying overnight, if you happened to catch them. >> for those hardy folks who stayed up overnight, they did see a few snowflakes and it will continue over the highcountry to our south, through the morning hours here, winding down, as we are left with very cold temperatures in and around the bay. there's another rain maker on the way. we'll take a look at that and the rest of your forecast details, coming up for you here in just a few minutes. well, so they are the

live look right now above twin peaks, a live camera up there. there was some snowfall overnight, but didn't stick to the ground. temperatures a little too warm. big story this morning is that temperatures are very chilly all around the bay area. we'll check in with jim in a minute. good news first, the san jose sharks celebrating their sixth straight win over the calgary flames last night. sharks were down 3-2 and had to defend a 4-minute power play, but they got the final goal in the third period. the game went to a shootout with a score giving the sharks the advantage, 4-3. the warriors last night

against the hawks 95-79. they had as much as 29 points, warriors heading out on a seven- game road trip. and as we've been talking about this morning, plenty of black ice obey area roadways if you are taking a road trip, be aware. that stuff sneaks up on you. >> it's called black ice. indeed, conditions are ripe for some ice on the road in the morning and it will be back again tomorrow, as we see another hard freeze setting up for the bay area and point of clarification here, i think we have seen snow flurries in the last few years across the bay area. there's been no accumulation since 1976. so snow flurries is what we had last night across the bay, snowflakes flying, but melting as they hit the ground. as we look from chopper 5, looks like, we're looking at sunny skies prevailing, a few patchy clouds, showers in the offshore waters. it will bump up against the coast and continue the chance of snowfall in the highcountry, as the santa cruz mountains and

the st. lucia range as well, as we again take a lovely look at the bay this morning. patchy clouds out there, but mostly clear skies prevailing and very cold temperatures here this morning. a few records set out there. let's take a look at twin peaks right now again, where we can see the city is mostly clear this morning and no snow on the roof tops out there. lot of people got excited about that. the potential was certainly there, all the ingredients in place, but basically just missed us. left us with a lot of cold air. you see the radar returns in the offshore waters here this morning, mainly south of the region from about half moon bay southward and we're looking at that shower activity again parallelling the coastline moving into southern california, crossing around the l.a. basin, bringing lots of cold air there as well. we'll continue with a hard freeze warning up for the bay area for tomorrow morning. we'll see temperatures much like this. look at the north bay, into the mid to upper 20s here with a 26

in santa rosa, 28 in napa this morning, even some freezing temperatures right across the bay here, as we've seen some mid to upper 30s there. we do have a winter weather advisory continues through the day today through the santa cruz mountains and the santa lucia mountains where they will likely see more snowfall there, isolated shower activity continues to move across the highcountry to our south. once again, we'll look for that energy to wind down, as we remain mainly clear today and cold and warming into the upper 40s to low 50s here through the afternoon, as lots of sunshine will prevail across the bay. once again, here's that very cold pattern, as the cold air slides south along the coast. we'll have a brief break through the day tomorrow, continued cold, but the threat of any rain will taper off here, as we look for the next frontal system, this one out here approaching the area come the beginning of the week and it will be returning the threat

of rain to the region beginning monday and continuing through midweek. next week at this point, looking pretty soggy, but it will be warmer, as i don't think we'll see any threat of snow around the region through most of next week. so we will continue with that chance of rain and take the snow out of the forecast. >> well, it's kind of unfortunate when it's so cold and raining. i was sent to the santa cruz mountains yesterday morning for our morning show, and it's just pouring on me. i would have much preferred snow! at least it makes it worthwhile if it's cold. >> it was close, almost. not quite. >> thanks for that. after more than 60 years, it has come down to this. the final day for a silicon valley market well known for its personal touch. we'll be right back. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

internet search engine to take the rubbish out of its results, in an attempt to remove useless content. google suddenly tweaks its formally hundreds of times a year, the latest change will be most noticeable among users. it affects 12% or one in eight search requests made in the u.s. apple still has a way to go to achieve perfection with its popular line of iphones. antenna problems are creeping up. consumer reports found flaws with the new verizon iphone, problems similar to those that have plagued at&t's iphone 4. the magazine's researchers say if verizon iphone is held a certain way in weak signal conditions, it may drop signal or be unable to even make calls. they say putting a case on the phone can fix the problem. on the plus side, consumer reports says that verizon iphone does perform, quote,

5 minutes before 9:00 this morning. black ice reports on the roadway, all the bad stuff that comes with the cold weather. kristen ayers is in walnut creek to show us how bad it got over there. >> reporter: good morning, ann. people out here were bracing for snowfall. the only thing that fell is the temperature, down to about freezing. this morning we were looking at temperature gauges showing 0 degrees celsius, 32 fahrenheit, officially at the freezing level. that was the only way we could tell it was freezing. when we looked around outside, we saw cars covered with frost, windshields totally coated in that frost. we saw a couple police cars that had been signature out all night, those also frosted over. some drivers told us they weren't prepared, didn't have scrapers. they had to pour water on their windshields and run their defrosters for several minutes this morning until all the

frost melted. those who were out this morning had to put on the layers, hats, scarves, earmuffs, gloves. we talked to people who were just out for walks this morning and pulling on the boots and putting on several layers of clothing. it's what you'll need if you're going to be out this morning. because the snow never quite materialized, we've got sunny skies out here today, but frigid cold. so people should definitely keep that in mind if you're going to be out. you'll want to put on the gloves and the layers, ann. >> that's right. that sun is deceiving, because it doesn't look so bad out there, but we believe you, kristen. it is cold. thanks for that. and we do want to make a mention, too. highway 4 in cummings sky way right now is closed because of black ice there and an accident. black ice reported in several areas of the bay area, so be careful out there on the roadways. this is in contra costa county, highway 4 and cummings sky way. you're taking a look at a live

shot, closed because of black ice and an accident. jim, quick final check on the weather because we have a short newscast. >> expect more black ice tomorrow morning, another hard freeze for tomorrow, seeing temperatures in the mid to upper 20s for the north valleys. once again, taking a look at the seven-day forecast, let's take a look at what we can expect for the week ahead. we're taking snow out of the forecast here and bringing the warm rain back in beginning monday, continuing through midweek, then kind of on and off through the end of the week, but this will be a wetter and warmer weather system than the one we saw today. if we could take a quick look at the radar image, you'll see the remaining showers this morning parallelling the coastline and heading south into the monterrey bay area, just brushing up against the coastal hills where it's still leaving some snow, but winding down as it moves to the south. newscast a bit short this morning due to college basketball coming up next. stay warm this weekend. we'll be back tomorrow morning
