look up. way up. this is mt. st. helena napa county. tonight we ask what happened to the snow? good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. many of us down at sea level were waiting for the snow. there was some in the higher elevations. skyline boulevard in san mateo county about 8:00 a.m. this morning. it is up about 1000 feet. enough snow collected to make it look like a forest of christmas trees. but for the most part it was the most hyped weather forecast since chicken little and just as much as a fizzle. anne makovec on the snowflakes. >> reporter: the snow forecast to hit san francisco never quite stuck. >> freezing cold. but still no snow. >> reporter: a disappointment to those who got up with the sun and came to twin peaks. >> we were hoping to find at least a little snow on the ground. in the hills all around us.

make a little snowman. >> reporter: the hype was huge. someone even created a website is it snowing in s.f..com and declared of it. and there is some validity to that. check out these flakes shot in san francisco last night on 19th. we have also heard reports of a light dusting on twin peaks. >> i haven't seen no snow. i wish so. >> it is weigh overblown. >> reporter: chopper 5 did find some sticking snow at the top of mt. st. helena in the north bay surrounded by green hills at lower elevations. at sea level more disappointment. the alameda yacht club canceled its cruise out earlier this week. >> it would be slippery. we want to make sure we don't lose any members. >> reporter: if you're look forge any measurable snow and ice around the bay area today

mother nature is not hooking it up. you're going to have to get creative. >> we always have other activities. so it is okay. >> reporter: and some people were drowning disappointments others were making plans. >> have to buy our own snow. >> reporter: in the snow anne makovec. >> lawrence will explain why we didn't see much snow in the low lying areas. >> i think we all hoped we would see a nice dusting of snow across the bay area. the physicses. tough to get the snow here for a reason. still, we did have some snow showing up around the bay area. yes, down to sea level. half moon bay area. yes, folks, that's snow coming down there early on this morning as the flakes continue to move on through. that's pretty impressive to see that happen. we had scattered reports of snow showing up around the bay area but it was more sporadic and that's what you see when you get that cold air moving

through. you see more scattered showers. let me see you some of the pictures of some of the snow where it did pick. this is snow out on a man's deck. said there was about half an inch of snow. into gilroy this afternoon. we had some snow there. check out this dog probably wondering what is that stuff. just haven't seen that before. and we did have some more snow being reported around the bay area. up, there it is in saratoga. san bruno. san jose. many places in the north bay but this is one of the deals if you're not outside at the right time you'll miss it. last night i stayed up until 2:30 a.m. tracking the radar. we will have to wait. time will come again when we see some more snow in the bay area. just doesn't happen that often. back to you, ann. >> lawrence, thank you.

the weather did cause problems. trouble on the roads today. black ice was to blame. >> reporter: the snow never fell overnight in the east bay but the temperatures did. right down to freezing. and the bitter cold meant black ice. this crash happened after the car hit black ice on highway 37 in vallejo. cal-trans sanded american canyon road after a jeep flipped on its side and into a field. >> we are hoping that it warms up a little bit here so we can melt these black ice situations. >> reporter: the warm up came but not before a treacherous combination of water an windchill under a drafty overpass froze a section of a highway. excessive amounts of water coming out of this pipe. the mud piled it up right in this area and it went across the highway and froze into a sheet of black ice. no one was seriously hurt but a section of the highway shut

down for hours and traffic was rerouted. >> it is incredibly inconvenient. >> reporter: for those hankering for higher temperatures this was an icy slap in the face. >> it is warm one day and then it is cold the next. i mean what, was it last week people were in their bathing suits almost talking about let's go swimming now it is supposedly going to snow. >> reporter: coating rooftops and pedestrians have to dawn layer after layer. >> thermals. these pants have a lining in them. socks. this coat. >> reporter: taxi driverses hoped snowfall would be a windfall for business. >> when it starts getting cold people are taking taxis. >> reporter: driving walkers out of the cold and into a cab. that is unless you skipped the chill all together. >> stay home. >> i'm so ready for it to be warm again. >> reporter: cbs5. the sierra is seeing its

fair share of snow. latest around of snowfall knocking out thousands of people in grass valley. several more days before service is completely stormed. some businesses in the area are making money. this ihop is the only restaurant in town that's open. a small plane that developed engine trouble crashed in the bay this afternoon and the pilot walked away with barely a scratch. the plane took off from palo alto airport and went down just south of the dunbarton bridge near fremont. don knapp how luck and skill helped avoid a tragedy. >> reporter: it wasn't quite like captain sully, but for the pilot that landed a plane in the mud it was just as good. a small plane sits upside down on mud flats on dunbarton bridge. the pilot surviving what is known as dead stick landing after he lost engine power shortly after taking off from

palo alto airport. he managed to glide to a landing in the mud. the landing gear sunk into the mud and the plane then flipped over. firefighters from both sides of the bay responded. the swamp style air boat was used to get to the plane and get the pilot out and bring him back. he was not injured. the chief spoke with us by phone. >> he had to go down in the aircraft and he was not only very lucky but i'm sure to some degree his skill helped him walk away from the aircraft crash. >> reporter: a twin engine cessna 310 also taking off from palo alto hit a tower. the main body of the plane crashed into a street. three inboard were killed. no one on the ground was

injured. >> we are very glad that the aircraft did not veer into any type of residential area. i give the pilot a lot of credit for where he put the aircraft down. >> reporter: next concern for the pilot. get his plane out of the mud, cleaned up and back in the air. >> thank you. don knapp, thank you. a south bay staples closes its door. the situation that shut down some muni service today. who needs snow? the warm hearted reason for this bay area freezing. ,,,,,,,,,,

affected by this at this hour. construction at church. today muni is doing track maintenance work. work to fix and replace worn rail components. during the construction streets and lanes around there will be closed over the weekend. an entire neighborhood was without water this morning after a major water main break in berkeley. crews say it does not appear to be weather-related. an 8-inch valve ruptured on spruce street deep underground. they had the water back in around 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon. constantino's market closing down today. the market was sold. the brothers are in their 70s

tonight. so plan on chilly temperatures if you're headedded out the door now and you've got mostly clear skies over the bay at this hour looking like it will stay that way. yes, it was quite an interesting day as we did have reports of snowfall around the bay area. freezing warnings up for tonight especially in the north and east bay valleys. also watch out for the north bay mountains. mid-20s and low 30s. wind sheltered valley could get temperatures even lower than that. so itly cold just about everywhere you go. doppler radar picking up on some interesting moisture into the afternoon. things winding down with the storm system. but watch this cell that makes its way through the gilroy area. brought snow down early in the afternoon in gilroy. cold air with that and a strong wind draft that's what can happen. lots of cold air begin to power in the backside of the system. some showers continuing in southern california where they will see snow. record cold temperatures overnight this morning.

37 degrees. that was a record in san francisco. 35 in oakland. a record there. 27 in napa. 28 in san rafael and 33 in san jose. all those records around the bay area. probably headed close to that overnight tonight. tomorrow we will see mostly sunny skies. temperatures should warm up just a bit in the afternoon. still cool in many spots inland an inside the bay but a little bit warmer than it has been. probably some mid-50s in the warmer sports. numbers right now running into the 40s. we will settle down for at least a couple days here but not for long. another storm developing out on the pacific paying a visit to the bay area as early as monday. cold air in place though. record temperatures overnight for tonight. some of those lows going to be very, very chilly specially in some of the interior valleys and parts of the north bay. probably down in the 20s tonight. prepare for that. cover up the plants and take care of pets and don't forget about the pipes and people too. 28 could be a record in napa. 30, possible record in san rafael. 35 degrees could be a record in

oakland too. numbers by day running up into the 50s as we head toward the afternoon. east bay numbers under mostly sunny skies running up in the low to about the mid-50s and north bay also expecting temperatures in the low to mid- 50s by afternoon. we will dry things out. by monday a chance of showers returns to the bay area. think we see another break on tuesday. kind of a set up for a bigger storm expected to hit the bay area with gusty winds and heavy rainfall as we head in toward wednesday, showers continuing into thursday. that's a look at weather. here is kim coyle with sports. >> thanks, lawrence. stanford women need more room in their trophy case. a few famous faces in san diego to check out zimmer with the hardwood. next. ,,

san jose sharks come from behind and win it in the shootout. >> they have been getting it done on the road too winning a franchise record eight games away from the tank this month. the sharks have moved to the top of the pacific division and are now third overall in the western conference behind vancouver and detroit with 19 games remaining. meanwhile, monta ellis and the warriors headed in the option direction getting blown out at home last night against the hawks trailing by as many as 29 in the 3rd quarter now five games behind the eighth seeded jazz. the warriors begin a seven-day road trip in minnesota tomorrow. >> we will take the blame, suck it up and go out and play our next game. that's how the game goes. that's how basketball is. you can find a million and one things wrong but it is over now and we move on and get ready for our next game. barring a last minute
