libya and how that could apply to us here in the u.s. here is the latest on the situation there right now. president obama calling the ongoing violence by moammar gadhafi unacceptable and says libyan officials could be held for war crimes. as of this morning, nato has boosted its surveillance flights over libya from ten hours a day to a 24/7 operation. there are reports this morning gadhafi wanted to meet with the rebels to discuss an exit strategy. libyan officials, however, are strongly denying those reports. cbs news correspondent mandy clark is outside ajdabiya this morning. mandy, hello. >> reporter: good morning. well, gadhafi's war planes struck again this morning. the town of ras lanuf which sits on the front lines and so far, no word of kaurnlts. casualties yesterday we got a firsthand look. when we arrived at the scene of this bombing, people ignored the

danger and raced to show us the damage. just minutes ago, we were driving down the road to get to the front line. when a government war plane dropped two bombs behind us. the shrapnel from those bombs are still warm. a family of three children in this pickup truck when gadhafi's air force truck. two of the children died. the rebels have had trouble on the ground as well. their advance slowed by better armed government forces counterattacking to defend gadhafi's home turf in the west. these fighters are realizing that enthusiasm alone won't get them to tripoli. for days, they advance to town after town in eastern libya by jumping into pickup trucks and racing to the fight with no planning whatsoever. this loud speaker truck was asking for ten volunteers to head into a firefight down the road. a few minutes later, the message was has anyone lost their keys? even the fighters admit they

need discipline. >> we need a leader. we need someone to tell us don't do that and do that. >> reporter: the rebels are preparing for the biggest fight so far. both sides are digging in on a front that's gone static in a fight that is now looking like it's turning into a protracted civil war. there were reports that gadhafi had reached out to the rebels to negotiate his depart tour. however, libyan state tv has dep denied these claims and may have been a disinformation campaign by the rebels. >> mandy, thanks. joining us in washington is arizona senator john mccain who has been calling for some form of intervention in libya. . he is the ranking republican on the armed services committee. thanks for being with us. >> thank you. >> you have been calling for some time now to instrument a no-fly zone. we know britain and france drafting a resolution for this and nato upped its air surveillance. the president, though, is much more measured and secretary
7:05 am
gates has come out and said, look, this is a serious commitment. is the u.s. prepared for what could come along with a no-fly zone, specifically if we end up on the ground? >> well, i don't think we should end up on the ground. i think would be counterproductive for us to send in ground forces, but i think it's very clear that, right now, through the use of power, gadhafi has been able to stop the tide that has been running against him. he has been able to inflict casualty from the air. when you have not well-trained or untrained troops, as we have on this anti-gadhafi side, air power really does change the equation. this is very level country, as you know, and so i think that the president of the united states has said gadhafi must go. that means that we need to take action. a no-fly zone would stop -- would not only stop the air attacks, but it would also send
7:06 am
a message to the anti-gadhafi forces that we're assisting them. there is humanitarian aid that needs to be given, intelligence we could share with them. there's a number of areas we could help these anti-gadhafi forces without sending in ground troops, and one -- and we are facing a huge humanitarian crisis there, too. >> can you realistically have one without the other? so many people i've spoken to and you look at this as soon as you go in with the no-fly zone you need to be prepared for what could end up being a ground involvement. >> well, for ten years over in iraq, we imposed a in fly zone and the escalation was as a result of 9/11, not because of that. decisions are made that caused escalations and i think we all realize that american troops on the ground would be very harmful
7:07 am
to our cause. right now, gadhafi is massacring his own people. he is committing war crimes. he is doing things which are in violation of every standard of international behavior. >> we just heard mandy show us as she was standing in that crater mentioned the crater and the children killed. do you see the skepticism of the american people of getting involved in the crisis over in the middle east? >> i certainly do. certainly a lot of skepticism, given the length of our involvement and the losses we have sustained in iraq and afghanistan. but also the american people also are not prepared to sit by and watch this blood thirsty, one of the two or three worst desperates in the world slaughter innocent civilians. and i would point out, again, gadhafi's air capabilities are not very great. his maintenance is not good. it's not that huge a problem

7:12 am
renamed the sober valley lodge. >> reporter: in an 11-page letter, warner brothers sent to sheen's lawyer, the studio wrote -- the reason he is being fired. >> are you insane? >> reporter: sheen fired back in an odd statement to the website tmz where he threatened to sue cbs and warner brothers saying, now i can take all of their bazillions and never have to put on those silly shirts. it's not just warner brothers having issue with sheen's behavior. last week, the courts took away the custody of his twins' son. >> end of an era, huh, charlie? >> yep. >> reporter: juan thing he is saying good-bye to is $1.8 million per episode paycheck. the show is reportedly worth
7:13 am
$160 million per season. warner brothers has yet to decide whether it will go on without the actor. >> the show was created long ago with charlie sheen solely in mind. so the idea of "two and a half men" going on without charlie sheen seems kind of ludicrous. >> reporter: and this charlie sheen show is getting very hard to watch. >> you condemned me and discarded me. not any more. winning! >> reporter: now charlie sheen has said his partying and his problems never affected his work on set but warner brothers says that's just not true. they have outtakes showing the actor had trouble remembering his lines and often hitting his marks. ben tracy, cbs news, burbank, california. >> lisa bloom joins us from los angeles. can you explained why he was fired? >> moral terp tued clauses are
7:14 am
common in entertainment contracts but apparently charlie sheen was able to negotiate his down to a narrow clause. we know it had to be not only an immoral act but something also a felony. warner brothers on page 10 of their letter says that is furnishing cocaine of others as part of his self-destructive lifestyle. they are saying he gave cocaine to somebody else and that is a federal under federal or state. >> one of the items he did admit to in one of his hants? >> exactly. what warner brothers claims. >> warner resigned sheen after he has had problems before. he has been arrested and charged with a felony and now sheen's lawyers contend that, at the time, they were willing to sign him as long as it didn't mess with production schedule. so is there a problem here? does warner brothers now have a problem with their position should this go to court? >> well, this letter that was just released really reframes the debate. chris, over the last couple of weeks we have all been talking about the issue whether his
7:15 am
off-duty partying can justify his being fired from the show. warner brothers now says no. . his behavior directly affected his ability to do the show. he showed up late. he missed rehearsals. he alienated on the set and poisoned the environment on the set and literally off balance and had to lean on props to do the show. they are squarely hitting charlie sheen with the idea he is fired for cause because he wasn't able to perform. >> some attorneys are calling charlie the gift that keeps on giving. we saw the web cast rant last night. he looks as erratic and unstable as we have seen him and i think that is saying something. how is this going to affect him in the court of public opinion and also in an actual courtroom? >> well, court of public opinion, i think, everyone can see this is a person who is clearly got some emotional problems. potentially alcohol and drug problems that are still in play. in court, the more he does this, the more he is harming his own case. because as warner brothers points out in the letter, there is a publicity clause.
7:16 am
this is standard the actor cannot talk about the show and talk about other people on the show that that specifically is barred by the contract. the more he does that the more he is in violation of the contract and justified in terminating him. >> safe to say he is not winning right now? >> no. he is really not. i think he is somebody who clearly needs help. i have to say that warner brothers in their letter does say they tried over and over again to help him. they even had a private plane standing by ready to take him to rehab and he didn't take advantage of it. >> lisa bloom, thank you very much. good to talk to you this morning. >> you as well.
