yesterday. we saw a couple of clouds across the skies today not bad. but we'll see a few more clouds. 62 the high in san francisco. 67 concord. the winds will be blowing this afternoon especially at the coast and inside the bay and we have some rain coming. more on that in a minute. elizabeth has traffic. >> we have an accident out there it's been quickly cleared but coming up northbound 880 at westbound 92 so watch out for that. chp has just arrived on scene. there's also roadwork in that area. sounds like the westbound and eastbound ramps northbound 880 completely closed until about 5:00 so another half hour or so from now. but the san mateo bridge looks great and another accident reported or actually some roadwork rather. various lanes blocked blocked. so far not causing any big delays. more traffic coming up. in the meantime, back to you guys. >> thank you. some screams for help and a

huge plume of smoke last night. more than 20 people now recovering from injuries from a big fire here in san francisco. >> in fact, many of them had to be helped from that burning building. let's go to anne makovec in the tenderloin now where the fire, anne, i understand may not be totally out yet? good morning. a. >> reporter: it was out but there may be hot spots at taylor and eddy here on san francisco. firefighters getting to work making sure that everything is safe inside the building. you can't tell any damage from the outside but apparently significant damage on the inside. here's what it looks like last night. smoke poured from the roof after the fire broke out around 9 p.m. firefighters believe it started in a trash compactor on the ground floor and traveled up the garbage chute into the attic and through the roof. people had to be rescued from

the fire escape. some just hunkered down in their apartments while firefighters got them out. about 100 people live in the hotel. the injured suffered from smoke inhalation. everybody is expected to be okay. after escaping, people stood on the street and watched. >> i heard people screaming get down, get out, get out of that building. then i panicked and i said, okay, ran, got my jacket, people were running down the stairs. >> they had to bring people down the fire escape. most of the people that got smoke inhalation are people that was handicapped or either had kids that was asleep. >> reporter: and the red cross has helped almost all 100 people who lived here find shelter. they have two shelters, one on mason, one on mcallister, and made sure other people had housing in some of the other local residential hotels. as for the integrity of the building, that's the big

question this morning. some major concerns with the structure of the roof. and again, firefighters still watching for hot spots making sure nothing is rekindling inside that building. >> anne, do you still smell the smoke in the area? >> reporter: no. in fact, it's cleared out quite a bit because last night, it was really affecting the entire area, people were reporting smelling and seeing the smoke from blocks away. >> what about road closures in the area? >> reporter: it looks like just one block here on eddy and between taylor and jones. >> all right, anne, thanks very much. anne makovec in san francisco. in other news, barry bonds could be taking the stand in his own defense today in his federal perjury trial. the former slugger's lawyers have not yet decided if he will in fact testify. today the judge will also rule on motions filed by the defense yesterday. they include dismissing one count of false statements and excluding some of the prosecution's testimony. on the defense's confirmed list of witnesses, first up steve

hoskins a former business associate of bonds who testified two weeks ago for the prosecution. and the defense will also call unnamed fbi and irs agents. we'll have a live report at 5:00. time now, though, 4:35. a doctor says that giants fan beaten after a dodgers fan is showing signs of brain damage now. the giants plan to honor bryan stow from santa cruz during ceremonies before friday's home opener and again at monday's game against the dodgers. so to's family says the victim felt unsafe in the game in l.a. last thursday. >> my wife received a text message from bryan during the game where he said he was scared inside the stadium. >> stow's family wants dodger fans to know they believe it was an isolated incident and not representative of the l.a. fans. bay area businesses are raising money for bryan stow.

yesterday the chain, pizza my heart, donated 30% of its sales to the stow family and owner chuck hammers was at the dodgers-giants game thursday in los angeles. >> being at that game, i felt like, boy, this could have been me. >> i think it's awesome. i think this is a great, you know, a great thing and, you know, because it makes me want to cry because it's special. >> the chain hopes to raise about $20,000 for the family. and today another fundraiser will be held for stow. the barbecue will be held at the paramedic company where he worked. emr on las plumas avenue in san jose. so to is an emergency medical tech -- stow is an emergency medical technician. the phraser is noon to 8 p.m. caltrain is expected to raise fares and cut back on service but the cutbacks won't likely be as bad as earlier feared. tomorrow the board will vote on a new deficit reduction plan, including a 25-cent fare

increase for each one way trip and a $10 hike in parking fees. the plan would also shut down three stations, the capital station in san jose, the hayward park station in san mateo, and the bayshore stop in brisbane. nine other stations would close on weekends only. and 10 fewer trains would run per week. now, if approved, the changes will take effect in july. the leaders of both branches of congress set to meet again today to hammer out a budget deal to avoid a partial shutdown of the federal government. the deadline is this friday night. president obama says if house speaker john boehner and senate majority leader harry reid don't iron things out, he will summon them both to the white house. >> nobody gets 100% -- >> we're not going to allow the senate nor the white house to put us in a box where we have to make a choice between two bad options. >> they talk about compromise,

but their goal is to shrink government up so small they can drown it in a bathtub. >> if friday's deadline is not met or extended, most federal employees will continue to work because they are considered essential but hundreds of thousands of non-essential workers will stay home. social security checks will still be mailed out but federal tax refunds could be delayed. meanwhile, president obama will hold a town hall session via facebook in the silicon valley. a rep says the event will be april 20 in palo alto, home of facebook headquarters. it will be streamed live over the internet. ceo mark zuckerberg will also be there. some of the topics are expected to include the economy and the government's debt. and we're learning just how expensive it will be to dine with the president during his trip to the bay area this month. just under $36,000, that's according to "the examiner." the exclusive dinner will be held at the home of mark ben then know of, chairman and ceo

of sales force.com. the political fundraiser all part of mr. obama's re-election campaign for 2012. libyan rebels blaming nato as they lose more ground to pro- government forces. the rebels say they are not getting the kind of support they were promised before air strikes began. but nato says the international air operation is achieving the u.n. security council objective of protecting civilians. former pennsylvania congressman kurt well done has gone to tripoli. he plans to meet today with libyan leader moammar qaddafi to try to get him to step down. he announced his trip in an op- ed piece in the "new york times. he met privately with qaddafi in 2004 when he led a congressional delegation to libya. a quick check of weather and traffic. first mr. lawrence karnow. a little cooldown? >> yeah. a couple of days ago temperatures in the 70s all around the bay area. those are long gone now. we are cooling down the temperatures outside but not a bad day. we are not going to have to worry about rain but winds

kicking up, temperatures cooler. cloudy but high and dry in th near term. longer term, rain again. 48 degrees in santa rosa right now and 49 degrees in san francisco. this afternoon, sunshine but cooler temperatures. plan on 68 in fairfield, 67 in san jose and about 62 degrees in san francisco. looking out over the next few days, guess what? yup we felt got a chance of showers making its way back into the bay area come thursday. much colder temperatures going to dive into the bay area, as well. they are going to leave a chance of showers into friday too. but looks like the weekend looks dry for the most part, although by sunday night we could be talking about a return of some moisture here in the bay area and a chance of some more rain. chance of more showers heading into monday. let's get a traffic check with elizabeth. >> all right. thank you, lawrence. we'll go out live towards the bay bridge toll plaza. everything looks great right now. the metering lights remain off. no surprise. right now if you are continuing westbound 24 all the way

through the macarthur maze, seeing top speeds and no delay as you approach the pay gates. you may find for the second straight morning now some roadwork from the incline towards the "s" curve. so various lanes blocked for another 20 minutes or so. to the san mateo bridge, i mentioned earlier an accident still off to the right shoulder, northbound 880 as you approach 92. there is some roadwork there, as well. now, if you cross towards san mateo bridge, the bridge itself is fine. in the commute direction those taillights are moving westbound between hayward and foster city. we'll zoom into where this accident is reported. it is northbound 92, a two-car crash. as you can see from our live traffic sensors, no delay through there. through marin county, 63 miles per hour your average speed crossing the golden gate bridge. and they have not done the lane change yet. so so far we're off to a great commute across marin, southbound 101 between novato and san rafael 8 minutes.

senior center. their frustration was evident. >> is it need to be severe -- the fines need to be severe so that pg&e takes this seriously. what i would propose for the eight people who died, $100 million each, another $200 million for the people who were injured and lost their homes so a $1 billion fine which is the level of profit they make in a year. >> my brothers and sisters were burned-out side of the house. there were over 600 to 800 degrees outside. so all the hairs, flesh on their bodies burnt off. so... [ crying ] >> i want something to be done. >> the california highway patrol had nearly a dozen officers watching the proceedings to keep the peace. 4:45 now. this morning, we're hearing from a san francisco city supervisor who was on board that muni train with the busted door. it happened during evening rush hour friday night. cell phone video shows the train traveling at a high rate of speed from van ness station with one door open.

supervisor scott weiner was one of the passengers. he was the bearded man on the far left. he told us he warned people to step away from that door. >> i asked them if they wanted to squeeze in but they didn't want to. and so we just went. then the operator got on the intercom and announced that he was aware of it and that people should stand back from the doors. >> muni officials admit the door was malfunctioning at the time. and the operator failed to secure it. the operator has been placed on nondriving status while muni is investigating. looks like at which time her get that tax break in -- twitter will get that tax break in exchange for moving into a rough san francisco neighborhood. the board of supervisors approved a payroll tax break for companies that move to or stay in the midmarket and the tenderloin. supervisors are expected to give it another thumbs up next week. twitter was threatening to move its headquarters out of the city. san francisco mayor ed lee supports the measure and is expected to tour that midmarket

area sometime today. frustrated at&t customers waited years for verizon's iphone. >> now it looks like it was worth the wait. an independent study finds verizon's iphone dropped significantly fewer calls than at&t's device. verizon customers reported a dropped call rate of 1.8%. the rate was 4.8% for at&t. still, researchers say that users on both services reported similar satisfaction results. everybody loves the iphone. >> i love my iphone no matter what it's the best. 4:47. a milestone when it comes to teen births. what we haven't seen in nearly two decades. plus, the kidnapped school bus full of kids, now one of the chowchilla three could go three. what it would take to stop his parole coming up. >> and how about in? getting paid to drop the weight. the new incentive one workplace is offering to get its employees in shape. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

= the parole board set a 2021 one of the chowchilla kidnappers could go free in ten years. the parole board set a 2021 parole date for richard allen schoenfeld. schoenfeld, his brother james and frederick wood were convicted of hijacking a school bus in 1976 and holding 26 children and their driver captive underground. but they all escaped without serious injuries. any governor in the next ten years, though could ask the board to reconsider the decision to grant parole. shorn feld was granted parole in 2008 but -- schoenfeld was granted parole in 2008 but then rescinded it. a trial in italy was a quick day in court. premier silvio berlusconi is accused for paying for sex with an underaged prostitute and use his influence to cover it. berlusconi didn't attend today's proceedings. 7 minutes after the trial began it was adjourned to may 31.

american actor george clooney is among those called to make an appearance at the trial because he was reportedly seen at one of berlusconi's parties. japanese company that owns that crippled nuclear power plant says radioactive water has stopped leaking into the ocean. the leak was discovered saturday when sea water outside the plant had more than 7 million times the legal limit of radiation. spike in levels is now raising concerns about the safety of seafood caught in the region. all right. windy day in the area. mostly clear skies right now. temperatures a little cool in spots. you have 40s and some 50s right now. a couple of patches of fog at the coastline. still, this afternoon, yeah, those winds will be kicking up a bit. temperatures not all that warm but not bad. you have 50s and 60s at the coast. mid-60s inside the bay. upper 60s inland. couple of clouds continuing to make their way across your skies. system diving to the south

moving out here. this one we're worried about overnight tonight. it will drop in bringing with it a chance of some showers here in the bay area as we head in toward tomorrow. but maybe even more importantly, much colder temperatures well below average for this time year. so high pressure is going to be moving out of the way as this system dives in toward the bay area. going to have to wait a little bit for rain. it will be windy toward the afternoon, gusty winds at the coast and inside the bay, maybe as high as 30 miles per hour. numbers working out like this. still not bad, 67 in san jose, 65 in fremont, should be about 59 though, cool and blustery in toward half moon bay. 64 in san mateo and 65 in union city. east bay temperatures going to have temperatures running up into the 60s in most spots. 69 in brentwood, 68 in pittsburg and about 66 degrees in pleasanton. how about our friends in the north bay? we are going to see lots of sunshine there, a couple of clouds moving through. otherwise 50s coastside but further inland, those numbers moving well into the 60s by the latter part of the day. now, this is where things get really interesting as we head

in toward the next couple days. we have a very cold system, an unusually cold storm system, diving into the bay area bringing us showers and maybe some snow in the mountains. unsettled into friday. neither of these look like very big storm systems but enough to get things wet as we head in towards saturday and sunday things drying out. late saturday night we could see a few more showers moving in right until monday. that's a look at your weather. here's elizabeth with traffic. >> all right. thank you, lawrence. let's go out live towards hayward near the 880/92 interchange. still have that accident out there but not blocking lanes so if you are heading towards the san mateo bridge, here's what it looks like across the span. it looks great. there is no problem at all. no roadwork. different story on the dumbarton bridge. there is some roadwork on the eastbound lanes of 84 past university towards the high- rise. coming westbound in the commute direction, everything is actually looking good towards the toll plaza. and you're cruising into menlo park. you can see one of our live traffic sensors there showing speeds about 60 miles per hour.

overall we're doing actually well. it is not quite 5:00 in the morning so that's one reason why. there's also some roadwork to tell you about on the nimitz freeway between fruitvale and fifth avenue embarcadero. that should wrap up here shortly but various lanes are blocked on northbound 880. southbound 880 is fine and no construction there. in the south bay, we're great. guadalupe parkway, 101 coming up from morgan hill, no issues. and heading out of downtown san jose you can see one little lonely headlight on northbound 280 approaching the 880 interchange. nice ride on the peninsula. if you are heading into san francisco, our reporter anne makovec has been talking about this road closure here in the tenderloin due to an apartment fire from last night so fire crews still out there. eddy street closed between taylor and jones. that is the only road closure that we know about right now because of that fire that happened last night. and if you are heading into san francisco from the east bay, here's live look right now at conditions at the bay bridge toll plaza. it looks great. all your approaches are fine, too.
