and i'm frank mallicoat. time is 4:30. s in good morning. it's friday, april 8. i'm sydnie kohara. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. we have breaking news out of san jose. northbound interstate 880 has just re-opened. >> it was closed for about three hours after a chp officer was hit by a car. gianna franco has the latest. >> we have a map of the area. again, as you said, all lanes are open in san jose. the accident happened about three hours ago northbound 880 at bass come. it is involving a chp officer. he was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. all lanes were closed for quite some time. this is along 880 where 280 and

880 meet there. looks like he was responding to an accident. there were reports of icy conditions on the road so that may have contributed to the problems there. again, everything is now open. looks like traffic is now moving really nicely through that area. so so far, so good. we have a reporter headed to the scene to get us more information. and we'll keep you updated. if you are taking a live look at 280 traffic is fine. we have another accident to start off with eastbound 4 at loveridge a noncommute direction but it is blocking languages. so far no delays to report through the area. high wind advisory also in effect for some of our bay area bridges. the bay bridge will be affected this morning as well as the san mateo bridge. but again, it's still early. it's friday light and so far traffic is moving through that area. again, we'll get you more information on this incident along san jose, but right now let's check your friday forecast. here's lawrence. >> starting out a little wet around the bay area this morning. of course that's been the big concern with some of the accidents outside. most of the energy has shifted south but the hi-def doppler picking up on that now. we are seeing the core of the low actually making its way across the bay area.

so we are getting the possibility of some of these thunderstorms. under some of those thunderstorms you can see that hail. we are seeing a strong cell now into the san jose area. look at this. we could definitely see some hail being produced in that. wouldn't be surprised to see lightning with that. this should diminish in the next 10, 15 minutes. but there's other cells still out there. couple more developing near pleasanton and livermore. you can see for the most part just some light showers but you have pockets of moderate amounts of rainfall. some lighter amounts of will be found in parts of the north bay starting to diminish now but looks like the whole core of the low is going to continue to shift south. as it moves out, it looks like things will begin to settle down. satellite picture shows it well. moisture is wrapping around and dragging further south. that will continue throughout the morning. partly cloudy, chance of showers. numbers in the 30s and 40s.

national anthem. buster posey also there. the rookie of the year will be honored. former giants rookies of the year will be there. willie mays, zepeda, mccovey, gary matthews and the count, john montefusco. we want to update you on the giants fan beaten at dodger stadium. his condition has been upgraded to stable. but bryan stow is still in a medically-induced coma. he had bruising to the frontal lope lobe of his brain during an attack on opening day. we caught one a friend of his. gina has spent the last several days with stow and his family at the hospital. she says he was able to follow simple voice commands yesterday and lift one of his legs. she also said stow would be very touched by all of the support he is getting. >> honestly, he would be so excited because he loves

attention. so he would be so touched and so excited and i'm devastated he can't be part of this. >> his employer american medical response raised $140,000 at a barbecue wednesday to help pay for his medical bills. the giants will hold a fundraiser during monday's home game against the dodgers. former giants slugger barry bonds could learn his fate on the day of his former team's home omer. the jury will begin deliberations at 8:30 this morning in the slugger's perjury trial. both sides gave closing arguments yesterday. federal attorneys said the greatest baseball hitter of his generation lied to a grand jury in 2003 about taking steroids. the defense told the jury that all of the government's witnesses were unreliable. if convicted, bonds could face prison time or home confinement. may find out his fate today. 4:37. let's take you back to our top story. northbound 880 has just re-

opened in san jose. >> it was closed for three hours after a chp officer was hit by a car. kiet do has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're actually live just off of the bascomb avenue exit here. behind me is 880 northbound. this whole area was shut down for 3 hours today. this is why. you can see all this white stuff on the ground here. this is hail that fell overnight and collected here maybe a quarter to at most a half inch little pellets of it and this was a problem at about 2 a.m. when it caused icy conditions at this stretch of 880 causing a wreck. a chp responded to the wreck and then he was hit by an oncoming car, suffered some head injuries and a broken leg, as well. we'll have some of that video for you in the next hour.

it's pretty large, an 8th of an inch in diameter. it just stopped hailing here a little while ago. there is a lot of ice on the road. most of it is melted on the asphalt. what you're shearing is the stuff that's actually stuck -- what you're seeing here is the stuff that's actually stuck on the grass and dirt. 880 is open in both directions after being shut down for three hours. we'll have video for you in 30 minutes. >> thank you, kiet do live in san jose. >> still, no doubt very slippery conditions. we'll get you updated on our traffic with gianna in just a few minutes. round the clock talks in washington in an effort to avoid a government shutdown. president barack obama delaying a scheduled trip to indiana today because of this budget showdown. the president met twice yesterday with house speaker john boehner and senate majority leader harry reid. they all say that they made some progress but no deal yet. >> all of us sincerely believe

that we can get to an agreement. but we are not there yet. >> i'm disappointed we haven't been able to get something done this point, but i am pleased that we're still working on get there is. >> house republicans passed another short-term spending plan yesterday. but it is not likely to pass the senate. and president obama has promised to veto it. it is 4:40. pg&e may be back -- rather, may back out of the $3 million settlement it reached with the state. the company is meeting with the puc on monday to discuss the settlement. it is threatening to pull out of the deal if the commissioners are allowed to ask about the utility's practices from the past. $3 million settlement was reached last month after pg&e missed a deadline to produce safety records. a relic from the past will be destroyed in the oakland hills at noon today. a demolition crew will implode the old oak knoll naval hospital, which closed its doors some 15 years ago.

you are driving in that area. the officer from what we understand has been hospitalized, significant injuries, we do know he has a broken leg but we will get you updated on this story in just a moment. a look from down below, but from up above you can see some of those storms that have caused some of the hail around the bay area continuing to see pockets of showers showing up even the possibility of some isolated thunderstorms and maybe even mor hail. so be careful on the roads. we'll have more on the weather coming right up. at first glance you might think snow may have fallen in some parts of the bay area but it was actually hail as we now know. it may have had something to do with the accident on 880 with the chp officer. but lots and lots of it pea sized and big, collected all over the bay area yesterday. this is a neighborhood in contra costa county between concord and bay point. the hail stayed on the ground at many rooftops for half hour or so before it finally melted. and, of course, some fell

overnight, as well. and a tornado may have actually hit in solano county. witnesses described swirling winds strong enough to knock down a fence, up root several trees in the area. the circular winds lasted for a minute and left a path of damage up to 200 yards long. nasa weather service says tornadoes do happen occasionally in solano county. two people confirmed dead after another strong earthquake rocked northeastern japan. that 7.1 magnitude aftershock was the strongest to hit the region since last month's deadly 9 quake. in addition to the two killed yesterday, more than 130 were injured. and it renewed a scarcity of gasoline and store goods in the affected areas. but there is no indication of any additional damage to the fukushima nuclear power plant. toyota says it will resume car production at all of its plants in japan later this month. the automaker has been dealing with parts shortages because of the earthquake and tsunami. starting on april 18, all of

toyota's 18 plants in japan will operate at half capacity. the plants will then be closed again for a week and a half starting april 28. 4:happen. a san francisco woman known as a local socialite facing prison time now in connection with an insider trading case. annabelle mcclellan and her husband are accused of providing confidential information on mergers and acquisitions to family members and made millions on the tips. under a plea agreement she admitted her guilt on tuesday. >> unethical liars, arrogant. this was a crime of arrogance. they believed nothing would ever get them. they could do whatever they wanted and they would never be found out. >> annabelle mcclellan facing up to five years in jail. her lawyer said arnold mcclellan had no knowledge of her involvement in the wrongdoing.

former de anza college baseball players of liability in a civil lawsuit in connection with an alleged gang-rape. their accuse her not get any money from them. in fact, she might have to pay their legal fees. the plaintiff claimed she was attacked by a group of baseball players at an off-campus house party four years ago. she was 17 at the time. back then, the d.a. decided not to file criminal charges. the plaintiff reached settlements with a few other defendants and others were dropped from the case. it is 4:50 now. muni recommends firing the bus driver caught on video texting and driving. the passenger captured the incident on a mirror with his cell phone on the 24 davisidero line in february. the driver said she was only ticketing when she was stopped but the muni -- texting when she stopped but the muni authorities believe the employee lied. the driver was originally suspended for three days and is back at work, not driving.

there will be a hearing consideration her termination. new hope for caltrain to keep some stations afloat. the board voted to delay action on cuts last night and will seek other ways of funding before any decision is made. that means the proposed closures of three stations would only be temporary. it's one of the ways to make up for caltrain's $30 million deficit. the board will meet again on april 20. and speaking of caltrain and san mateo this morning, caltrain running on time. but service was delayed when a man walking on the tracks was struck and killed by a passenger train at 1 a.m. this is the fifth fatality on a caltrain right of way this year. here we are on this friday, of course we had the wild weather yesterday. we have reports of hail around the bay area this morning. so we're not done with the wild weather just yet. but it is going to be winding down. hi-def doppler showing you some of that moisture now focused mainly on east and the south bay at this time. we had reports of hail towards san jose and looks like another pretty good cell beginning just

to pop up now. that's not going to happen. we have that cold air moving overhead and you can see some of these cells developing in toward san jose also toward campbell and los gatos. more scattered showers there. also into the east bay now we are seeing those cells move on through here. mostly just lighter moisture but it's very interesting that cold air sliding up into the hilltops and we are looking at snow in the south bay mountains. the rain will end this afternoon and skies just partly cloudy. it should be dry. breezy, though, around the bay area. and the temperatures again going to be running well below average only in the 50s and low 60s. talking about below average, boy, chilly temperatures out there right now. 35 degrees in the napa valley. 37 in santa rosa. one degree above freezing right now in fairfield. it is a chilly start to your day. and around the state, you're going to find some cool temperatures and scattered showers into the sacramento valley and also into fresno. heading to snow country, more snow showers up there. might be a good idea to carry

chains. no heavy snowfall for today but it looks like more snow in the forecast continuing into tomorrow. so looks like this trough continues to bring in that unusually cold air for this time year into the bay area. it's going to start to slide east as we head into the day and looks like by the weekend things will wind down. so showers ending this morning, i think by the afternoon partly cloudy skies and dry conditions. temperatures still going to be on the cool side. plan on 58 degrees in livermore, 60 san jose. and 61 degrees in fairfield, one. warmer spots there. looking out toward the weekend things settle down and dry out. we are expecting nice weather saturday and sunday. temperatures into the 60s. chance of showers could return monday. drying out though toward the middle of this next week. today the home opener, that's right, the giants and the cardinals today, just after i believe 1:00. and look at, we have some partly cloudy skies, some cool temperatures but it should be dry. here's gianna with a look at

traffic. >> thank you, lawrence. i'm going to start off with a map of the south bay right now to give you an update on what conditions look like along 880 and 280. this is the area where we have that early-morning accident involving a chp officer and you can see our live sensors are showing lots of green through here but keep in mind, as you saw in some of our live pictures earlier that there's lots of hail, icy conditions on the roadway so use caution as you travel through this area. definitely give yourself some extra time through there. this is along 880 near bascomb, 280 may also be affected. we have an earlier trouble spot eastbound 4 at loveridge is cleared off the road where you can see traffic looking great in both directions no delays as you work your way westbound as well through antioch. roadwork still in effect northbound 680 between sycamore valley road and stone valley road. various lanes closed there, hoping to wrap it up by 6:00. wind advisories lifted for bay area bridges. here's live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, slight delays there as they move around the lanes there. so far, so good though. you're clear across the upper deck into san francisco. san mateo bridge problem-free. you can see our sensors showing

lots of nice speeds along 880, along 92. and you can see traffic moving very well in both directions on 880. they lifted a wind advisory on the san mateo bridge. caltrain has a special train running for the giants game today. first pitch at 1:35. it will depart at 9:56 a.m. and will go towards the stadium. the train is a block away from the stadium so a good choice to get to the game. bart will also run longer trains to accommodate the fans heading to our home opener today. that's the drive. back to you. >> thank you. hey, well, the next time your boss catches you on facebook at work, you can have a good excuse. >> of course. just say you're being more productive. a new study found that take an online break can make you work

harder. workers who watched the short video were then more focused on the next task. those who didn't made more mistakes. this weekend the giants will be joining the ranks of a lot of other great teams in bay area sports history. >> they will get their championship rings. the giants' first since moving to the bay area back in 1958. the rings are designed by tiffany's. they will arrive on saturday. nobody has seen them. the first bay area championship happened in 1972 when the as beat cincinnati. the first of three for them. the warrior of course won in '75. the raiders in '76. one player involved with the 49ers first championship in 1982 is reflecting now. >> the giants going through it and it's like deja vu. and we start having play backs, recalling some of the old times in '81. i was on fire.
