[ laughter ] >> i know. all right. let's go out towards the bay bridge toll plaza. everything is nice and quiet -- >> did you? no, i was trying to make frank feel more like a wimp showing what a tough chick i was! 880 through oakland looks okay. overnight roadwork extends for another half hour on southbound southbound between broadway and 16th avenue embarcadero. also that connector ramp once again shut down in san leandro from 880 to 238 southbound. that's your traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. we begin with contra costa fire investigators at work at bay point this morning. they are trying to find the cause of a house fire on madison street. two people, though, got out of the house safely. a neighbor called the fire department while the residents tried to put out the fire with a garden hose but no one was hurt. the fire had $100,000 worth of damage. we have a reporter headed to the scene and we'll have the latest as it becomes available. a car is still in the surf this morning after it flipped over a cliff on the sonoma county coast. three people, including a 3- year-old child, are hurt. the car ran off highway 1 north of bodega bay last night. it dropped about 150 feet to

the beach. an ambulance took the child and an adult to the hospital in santa rosa. the driver was arrested for dui. bart service back to normal this morning after the train struck a person in oakland, lying on the tracks shortly after 10:00 last night at the rockridge station. that station was closed for about 2.5 hours. no word on the condition of the person. a suspect in four cold case murders will be arraigned this afternoon in marin county. investigators say 77-year-old joseph naso could be a serial killer. they found evidence in his reno home linking him to the deaths of young women between 19 77 and 1994. their bodies were found in three different counties. the d.a. wouldn't go into specifics. >> this is an ongoing investigation. and to invite questioning at

this time could hamper the investigation. >> they are looking into other cold cases in the country to see if there might be a connection to this man. all the victims in california had the same first and last initials. they are investigating. a 15-year-old suspect in the murder of a 16-year-old friend will make the first appearance in court today. andy zeng was found shot to death on sunday. they say five teens were inside the home at the time. four have been arrested. one suspect still missing. yesterday, 18-year-old jimmy lay was charged with being an accessory to the murder after the fact. there is no motive in that shooting. members of a california teachers union getting threats now over its support for convicted cop killer. a jury in 1982 convicted mumia abu-jamal of murdering a philadelphia police officer. over the years his supporters

rallied for his freedom saying he did not get a fair trial. last month the california teachers passed a resolution calling him a civil rights hero. now they are getting threats. >> one of the things that i have been getting in my email and voicemails has been, uhm, why is the teacher union a cop killer lover? so clearly that's part of the right wing talking points. >> the teachers union feels it's being criticized for its position as part of a conservative effort to drive a wedge between teachers and police unions. the giants fan who was severely beaten outside dodger stadium nearly two weeks ago is showing slight signs of improvement this morning. doctors say bryan stow remains in a medically-induced coma while they monitor brain activity and swimming. the giants have add -- and swimming. the giants have added nearly $70,000 to the fund established to pay for medical costs and other expenses. the search continues for the two men who attacked him. 16 los angeles police

detectives are working around the clock examining information from witnesses. these are the suspects' sketches. they are said to be between 18 to 25, with tatoos. the jury in the barry bonds perjury trial will meet again this morning for a fourth day of deliberations. bonds is accused of lying to a federal grand jury when he said he never knowingly took steroids. the jury resumes deliberations about 8:30 this morning. and today students and faculty will hold rallies on cal state university campuses. their battle cry, stop making cuts to our college education. kiet do is in san jose state university this morning and has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: this is taking place on all 23 csu campuses, teachins, demonstrations, rallies, marches in support of higher education and fair contract for university employees. the california teachers association -- or i should say california faculty association

said that in recent years student fees have tripled and 3,000 faculty members have been laid off. the budget has been cut by billions. campuses have cut classes and reduced the number of students, doing things like shortening application deadlines resulting in overcrowded classrooms and long waiting lists. the union says this amounts to students paying more and getting less. the union has a list of demands today. bargain fair contracts with faculty and staff, no more job losses, support laws to make the csu more transparent, cut management bloat and stop fee hikes. most of the rallies start at noon today. and the big question is, will it be peaceful? the association says they support civil disobedience but not violence. frank? >> all right, kiet do live at san jose state university, thank you. today president obama will unveil his plan to reduce america's soaring debt which now tops $14 trillion. >> but before he goes public with the plan, he is going to

give congressional leaders a preview. the president expected to call for a mix of spending cuts and tax hikes including medicare and medicaid reforms and higher taxes for the wealthy. >> the point is that the balance is essential, that the burden has to be shared by everyone. >> from my point of view, taxes are not on the table because we don't have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem. >> the u.s. is heading for a record deficit estimated at 1.5 trillion this year. it is 4:38. time for a little check of traffic and weather. it was cold this morning. >> he is whining again! >> it is chilly outside. we'll look at the temperatures. but first the chance of rain coming to the bay area you can see on satellite we have a weak cold front making its way to the bay area, most of the clouds that are building to the

north of us. but starting to see more of that cloud cover right now. best chance for showers throughout the south bay actually going to be later today. we'll take a closer look at that in a bit. right now here's a peek at your current temperatures simple floor yesterday although warmer readings because of the cloud cover. your highs for today cooler than yesterday, though. a mix of 50s and low 60s. we won't see mid-60s inland like yesterday. here's the extended forecast. we had that slight chance of showers throughout the day today tapering off by this evening. thursday we do see a mix of sun and clouds again and friday very slight chance of showers back in the forecast shaping up nicely for your weekend with some readings in the low 70s and some sunshine. and for the start of your workweek, once again a mix of sun and clouds. that's a look at your weather. let's get a look at your traffic with elizabeth. >> thank you. we'll talk about overnight roadwork. i just heard that this is wrapped up now in san leandro. so the ramp is completely re- opened right now from

southbound 880 to southbound 238, the second day in a row they have been doing that overnight roadwork across that stretch so we were seeing some slowing on our sensors but it looks like within the last couple of minutes or so again everything turned to green so they have re-opened the ramp and you're good to go there. a lot of overnight roadwork is picked up. sensors run dating on the nimitz right now but north- and southbound 880 look okay. there is some roadwork in the southbound lanes of 880 still between broadway and 16th embarcadero. but other than that, you're pretty good to go across all your approaches towards the bay bridge. the bay bridge itself looks great. no metering lights. no delay right now heading into san francisco, although we still have the high wind advisory in effect for the bay bridge. it's the only advisory issued this morning. san mateo bridge is fine, the right side of your screen the commute direction westbound 92, about 13 minutes between hayward and foster city towards the high-rise and silicon valley commuters, westbound 237 so far nice and light. you can see a couple of

pleasanton at 62. we're keeping a chance of showers in the forecast for all parts of the bay area is through this afternoon. back to the studio. >> all right. thank you, kristy. 4:43. an autopsy set today on a patient who authorities say died at a napa state hospital while staffers tried to subdue him. the napa valley register reports it happened in a high security area where people incompetent to stand trial live. sheriff's office says staffers acted after a 47-year-old man allegedly assaulted another patient. unions representing hospital workers have been calling for safety improvements. last october a patient was charged with the murder of a hospital employee there. a santa cruz county cat is recovering after coming home with an arrow in his head. max's owners tell the sentinel that arrow drove through two to three inches into the cat's head but it didn't crack the skull. vets were able to pull it out. it's not clear if it was an accident. if it's determined to be intentional authorities may seek animal cruelty charges.

and san francisco is pushing for a way to keep track of people who abuse animals. dr. elliott katz is one of the supporters of a public database that would work a lot like megan's law. convicted animal abusers would be required to register their personal information and a description of their crime. pet shutters and other agencies dealing with an -- shelters and other agencies dealing with an abuser would prevent that abuser from adopting again. >> going to save a lot of animals being injured and hurt by people who just can't control their emotions, can't control their anger. >> the database issue will be the hot topic tomorrow night at san francisco city hall. san jose is on its way to a big cut in the number of places selling medical marijuana. the city council voting last night to cut the number of cannabis collectives to 10 and to keep them in industrial and business districts. next week the city council will tank the issue of how to select

presidential race. mitt romney says he intends to run for the white house in 2012. his campaign said it was not a formal announcement yet. that's expected this spring. he launched a presidential exploratory committee last monday. in the latest poll, huckabee and trump were first, sarah palin third, followed by mitt romney and newt gingrich. you want to keep your umbrella close by this morning as you head out. we have a chance of showers in the forecast for all of the bay area today and a pretty cloudy start to the day, as well. here's a look at your temperatures outside. high 40s into the 50s for the most part, some sprinkles a little later on this afternoon. chance of showers throughout the bay and cool conditions. we're dropping it down a few degrees from yesterday keeping those temperatures below average for this time year.

here's a look at satellite to show you that system sitting off the coast. this is a very weak cold front that's making its way through. so not a lot of rain but definitely you want to keep that umbrella and keep your rain jacket out because until this afternoon, chance of it throughout the bay. so better chance than two days before. you can see breezy conditions along the approaching cold front. showers probably late afternoon. let's time it out on our pinpoint forecast. you can see during those commute hours, the rain starting to move in. by noon this is actually our best chance of seeing rain throughout the bay area. and then that system continues to move pretty fast-moving system so by the time you hit the commute tonight probably won't see any sprinkles left over and we'll start to dry out for tomorrow. here's a look at the highs for today. dropping down a few degrees from yesterday. mid-60s in the inland spots, not the story today. running 61 in fairfield and in concord. 60 for oakland. 57 for the city and for pacifica. 61 down in san jose. here's a look at your extended forecast.

that chance of showers remaining in the forecast today. and then we're actually going to dry out tomorrow. see a mix of sun and clouds. and then a slight chance of some showers on friday. best chance for showers is north of the golden gate bridge. saturday and sunday are shaping up really nicely. we are going to see some sunshine mixed with clouds, temperatures inland running in the low 70s. and monday and tuesday are looking good right now, as well. that's a look at your weather. let's check your traffic with elizabeth. we'll go out towards the peninsula. word of a new accident in san bruno northbound 101 right near the sfo exit. it sounds like the ramp there might be partially blocked. so watch out for that. so far the main lines of the freeway look okay if you are heading that way north- and southboun 101. speeds averaging 66 miles per hour. dumbarton bridge overnight roadwork continuing here, as well. westbound and eastbound 84 approaching the high-rise, various lanes blocked there

until 5:00 this morning. so far again not causing any delays. and the south bay looks great, 101 coming up from morgan hill, zipping on up towards downtown. downtown san jose coming out of it on northbound 280 looks great no problems. headlights are approaching the 880 interchange. the 880/17 interchange. through the south bay, a check of the north bay marin county commute no problems. southbound 101, 64 miles per hour across the golden gate bridge. they should be doing the lane change any minute but for right now you're good to go in the southbound direction and in the northbound direction. and mass transit to be on time. bart, ace, muni metro and caltrain all on time, bart with 23 on-time trains. if anything changes when you hit the road, remember kcbs, our radio partners, at 106.9- fm. back to you. nasa announced which museums will get to display its four retired shuttling. atlantis will stay at the

kennedy space center. endeavour will go to the california science center in los angeles. discovery will be at smithsonian air and space museum. enterprise the test shuttle that never went into orbit will land in new york city. 21 museums around the country put in bids. the viral video has some people outraged over airport security patdowns. the video shows a 6-year-old girl as she went through security at the new orleans airport last week. some say the process was just too intense for a child even though the tsa screener did tell her what was happening. others say it's just part of the tsa's job to examine everyone. >> a 6-year-old child shouldn't be subjected to this kind of treatment in the first place if there is no reason to suspect her or her parents of being criminals. >> that took all of what, 20 seconds to get done? you know? suck it up. it's a part of travel right now. >> the tsa says children have been used to carry explosives in the past and they are subject to the same
