i'm glad it's friday club here. >> oh, my gosh, grateful for the small things. what about you, lawrence? >> i'm feeling so good today. i can't tell you how good i feel today. we have great weather today. we have some partly cloudy skies around the bay area right now, a few more clouds making their way into our skies. temperatures should be warming up about 71 in san jose, 69 in concord, about 67 in oakland, and 64 in san francisco. slight chance of some showers in parts of the north bay. let check on traffic now with gianna. >> well, so far, so good as far as accidents go. happy friday. we're friday light on the freeways. the only trouble spot is construction on the southbound 13 broadway off-ramp. also along 680 but the bay bridge looking fine. we'll have a check of 680 coming up. right now, back to you. well, the tower for the new bay bridge is going to get a little bit taller today. >> you may be wondering where elizabeth wenger is. she is not doing traffic here.

she's on treasure island to explain what's happening to the tower. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. yeah, the tower is growing by about 15 feet later on this morning. it's going to grow to 495 feet of its total 525-foot height. caltrans provided us this computer animated video. you can find it on their website if you want to check it out. kind of cool stuff. unlike the previous four tower lifts which were comprised of four individual sections, this latest lift is just a single segment that will sit atop all four independent legs. the section known as the grillage will evenly distribute the weight of the 480-ton cable saddle so the section if you're wondering why it's nicknamed the grillage it's due to the position of internal steel plates think create the appearance of a grill great, makes sense, right? well, the latest tower section arrived in the bay area back in february and when completed, this will be the signature element that we have all been hearing about of the new eastern span. so we understand that lifting

this grillage segment won't take as long as it did for the tower legs. crews will take approximately a day to place the grillage ontower legs hopefully by the end of the workday today, this will actually be complete. we understand work is set to begin around 10:00 this morning. so as usual, they're telling commuters not to look. so far when all this tower project work has been going on, we haven't seen any big backups so far. so that's the good news. and we understand there's just one more piece left to be put in place before this tower is completely finished to its 525- foot height. and the complete reconstruction project of the bay bridge is set to be complete in 2013. back to you. >> thank you, elizabeth. elizabeth wenger on treasure island. an oakland gas station just swamped, packed with customers, when its prices plunged at the pumps. cbs 5 was there when it came to

a sudden end. >> it just went to 4.35! >> it's over, that quick. it's over! >> they had fun for a while. 4.35 a gallon the posted price for gas at the arco station on 98th avenue and international boulevard but for some reason the pump price dropped to $1.35 for a while last night. >> man, amazing. low, y'all. some reason. 1.35 a gallon! come get it man, come get it. >> cars backed up into the streets as word spread all around town about the cheap gas. the crowd disappeared after that price returned back to 4- plus bucks a gallon. 4.35 would be a bargain in hawaii. theirs is 4.46. california is second 4.18. in the bay area san francisco's average is 4.24. it's 4.20 in san jose and 4.19

in oakland. the search is on now for two dogs who attacked a woman in san jose. now, this happened early yesterday morning at a park on the city's north side. dawn wilson says two dogs attacked her husky and then the dogs attacked her when she tried to intervene. the injuries were so severe to her dog it had to be euthanized. the attacking dogs are pit bull mixes. this is the third significant dog attack on a human in five months in san jose. the most recent was in january in the blossom hill area. family members of bryan stow say they are hopeful he could wake up from his coma soon. the latest update on the family's website says stow still hasn't opened his eyes but doctors have started weaning him off sedatives. two dodgers fans brutally beat stow into a coma after the giants-dodgers season opener in los angeles. well, yesterday police released a new sketch of one of the attackers. they say he has a distinctive

mole on his left cheek. meanwhile, police have drastically beefed up security at dodger stadium. >> you throw beer on somebody, you do any kind of assault, and you're going to be going to jail. >> giants pitcher tim lincecum pledged $25,000 to a fund set up for stow and that brings the total raised for stow to at least $235,000. it is 4:36 now. more than a dozen criminal convictions all under scrutiny in santa clara county because of a child molestation allegation against a key prosecution witness. county recently fired dr. patrick klein a pediatrician and according to the "san jose mercury news," klein is accused of molesting foster children who were in his care. he was not charged with any crime. but the allegations could affect his credibility as a witness. the district attorney's office is notifying defense attorneys giving them an opportunity now to appeal their cases. state regulators have granted pg&e a rate hike that will bring in $120 million over

the next four years. customers will see their bills go up by 7/10ths of a percent each year. the average bill will go up this year from $51.60 to 51.96 but by 2014 it could be as high as 58.16. the money will go primarily towards repairs on transmission lines but pg&e will have to file reports twice a year showing about it's doing with the funds. critics said the lack of follow- up in the past loud pg&e to delay repair projects at will. new theories are coming to light about the san bruno pipeline explosion. ntsb released new interview transcripts yesterday. a senior executive with pg&e said the blast might have been caused by the earth movement resulting from a leaky water pipe or sewer main. but the u.s. geological survey reported there were no earthquakes near the site around the time of the blast. a final report on the explosion will be released in several

months. opponents of development at a vallejo park promise to block bulldozers if they try to start work this morning. native americans say glen cove waterfront park is on sacred ground, the site of a 3500-year- old burial ground and they are asking the state to stop the city from building a parking lot there. they plan a ceremony and occupation at the site this morning. it is 4:38. let's take a look at weather now and lawrence, you got a good night's sleep last night, didn't you? >> oh, i'm feeling great! about midnight i went down! [ laughter ] >> we have clouds making their way across our clouds again. probably thickening up. a ridge of high pressure overhead. most of the moisture well to the north although we are starting to see a few light showers into parts of northern sonoma county. temperatures outside right now you have some 40s and 50s so fairly mild under partly cloudy skies. i think by the afternoon these numbers are going to heat up. how about this, 71 san jose, 70 in fairfield, 69 degrees today in livermore and about 62 in

pacifica. looking out to that all- important weekend, we have a pretty nice one coming your way as those temperatures will continue to warm a little bit into saturday and looking good on sunday, as well. a lot of clouds jumping over the ridge and again a slight chance of showers well to the north. the rest of us going to keep try. better chance for rain across the rest of the bay area come monday back to dry weather, nice stuff towards the middle of next week. let's get a check of traffic now with gianna. >> good morning. pretty nice on the freeways now also. in fact, we are accident-free, that's the good news. the only thing to worry about is construction right now. northbound 680 stone valley to rudgear in effect until 6:00 this morning. also roadwork along 880 southbound between broadway and 23rd, also expected to wrap up at least by 6:00. now, we did have some roadwork reported along highway 13, the broadway off-ramp also reported as an accident. looks like it's not really a factor. all the activity is out of lanes. in fact, if you are heading out of the maze anywhere towards the bay bridge, traffic looking nice. the metering lights are off. the golden gate bridge also

the fifth tower segment is about to be moved up on the bay bridge. i must admit i have done a little rubbernecking heading over to the east bay yesterday. i had not been across the bridge in a couple of weeks. it's really coming along. >> our elizabeth wenger is out

there on treasure island watching it all. she will give us a live report in a few minutes. the spending showdown continues today in washington. president obama is expected to sign a bill to keep the government running for the rest of the fiscal year. the house and senate passing it yesterday. also today, the house is expected to vote on republican congressman paul ryan's 2012 budget proposal he says would cut more than $4 trillion over 10 years. well, the free ride for state lawmakers is coming to an end. the state panel voting to slash the program that provided state- paid cars, insurance, repairs and gas for legislators. the average cost, about $7,500 a year per member. legislators instead will get a $300 monthly allowance to offset the cost of driving their own cars. the change could save the state roughly $2 million over five years. it is 4:43. used cars are not generally big

bargains these days. that's according to a study by the website cars.com. it says the average price of a used car increased by 10% this year. brands with the highest gains include hyundai, mercury and ford. >> if you go two, three years ago when the economy was kind of -- took a slump, people weren't really leasing cars. well, here we are three years later, big part of our in. lease inventory is lease returns. >> it's all about demand as more car buyers opt for used cars. ford section expanding its recall, by the way, of f-150 pickups due to safety returns. it includes more than a million trucks, model years 2004 through 2006. apparently an electrical short could cause airbags in the vehicle to deploy accidentally, possibly injuring the driver. and a reminder, taxes are

on video and posted online. fighting nats they happened last w two fights involving bay area students caught on video posted online. these fights happened last week just off the hayward high school campus. both took place just as school was ending. the first on thursday, and

again on friday. the videos show black students fighting with latino students and parents think the fights may be gang-related. >> everybody was fighting you just seen crowds of people, fists going everywhere. >> we really concentrate is making sure when they are with us they're under our care, before after-school activities, school activities, that they feel safe and that they are safe. >> well, that school did just win a commendation for taking steps to increase safety and students are prohibited from wearing red or blue to school. they are known gang colors. still, they said nobody is enforcing that rule. an east bay cat ranch burned to the ground this morning after a fire that could be seen for miles. this is the abandoned higgins cattle ranch in brentwood. there are no fire hydrants in the location and crews had to truck in water. because the ranch was abandoned, there were no injuries to people or animals. no word on how the fire started. at least two people are

dead after a tornado tore through a small town in oklahoma. amateur video capturing the twister as it approached the town. the county sheriff says there is widespread damage including destruction of homes and a school. downed trees and power lines are blocking roads. all right. we are worried about the weekend weather here and it is looking good around the bay area. there is a slight chance of some showers in parts of the bay area. we'll tell you about that in a second. partly cloudy now. temperatures much milder than yesterday. remember yesterday we had some numbers down in the 30s. 40s and 50s now. cloud cover keeping the temperatures up a bit. by the afternoon mostly cloudy skies in the north bay. there is a chance, just a chance, you could see some light showers in parts of the north bay. probably northern sonoma county. the rest of us plenty of clouds passing on by with some sunny breaks. temperatures are going to be warmer though all around the bay area today. you get the sense here, high pressure building in, but look at this. you got a lot of clouds rolling

right over the top. the main focus of the energy well north of the bay area but occasionally, we'll see some energy dragging a little further to the south and that's what we expect later on this afternoon bringing at least a chance of a few light showers in parts of the north bay but for most it is going to stay dry with some mild temperatures outside today some of those numbers heading up into the 70s by the afternoon looking pretty good as we head in towards the weekend. how about 70 degrees in morgan hill, about 72 in cupertino, about 70 in milpitas. you're looking at 62 in pacifica and 68 degrees in union city. east bay temperatures 71 in antioch and pittsburg, 70 pleasanton, 65 alameda and 65 richmond. north bay tricky. mostly cloudy skies a cool 59 degrees in bodega bay, 68 degrees in santa rosa. you will have to watch out for showers there but probably lingering to the north of that. about 64 degrees in mill valley and 64 degrees in san

francisco. all right. checking out over the next couple of days and the big weekend, you have some plans? i think we're looking good. you will see a lot of clouds moving over top of this ridge especially into saturday and again a slight chance of those showers well to the north. it looks like though going to be seeing more sunshine as we head in towards sunday and then late sunday night and into monday, i think more substantial storm system drops down to the bay area. that will bring with it a better chance of rain across the entire bay area come monday. by tuesday and wednesday, and even next thursday, looks like the return of dry warmer weather on the way. all right. let's get a check of traffic now with gianna. good morning. 101 in alum rock not bad. traffic in fact very light this morning as you work your way through there. to the maps, the rest of the south bay not too bad. outside of a few construction spots, we have troubles on northbound 280 that connector to guadalupe parkway. the ramp will be closed for 10 more minutes as well as 85 at stevens creek but here's a live look at 280. traffic is light.

you can see a few headlights through that portion. elsewhere, roadwork still in effect northbound 680 from stone valley to rudgear road, wrapping that up by 6:00 if not sooner. 880 southbound between broadway and 23rd, we are seeing lots of green on our sensors so doesn't seem to be causing a problem on the freeway through there this morning. in fact most of the traffic through the east bay looks good. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. marin county commute, 8 minutes from 37 to 580. approaching the golden gate bridge no problems into san francisco. san mateo bridge light this morning. an easy ride between hayward and foster city. you're looking at 13 minutes to get through there. bart, ace, muni metro and caltrain all off to a very good start on this friday. all right. remember kcbs, our radio partners, at 106.9-fm. that's traffic. back to you. >> thank you. 4:53 your time. a new report suggests bacteria are common in meat and poultry produced here in the united

states. nearly one in four samples is contaminated. that according to the study published in the journal of clinical infectious diseases. researchers say the bacteria can be killed by thoroughly cook the meat and poultry, though. but even then, there's still a risk because of the cross- contamination and improper handling of the food. a woman who was looking for love in a popular dating website is now suing the site and demanding that it screen all its members. the plaintiff is a hollywood executive. her attorney says the man she met attacked her. now she's filed a civil suit. it seeks to stop match.com from signing new members until the site starts screening for sexual predators. >> this is in a sense that we want to alert the public to the possibility that there are other predators online dating, using match.com. >> it's impossible for a company with a million subscribers and over 10 million

members to do a thorough and complete background search on people. >> the woman filing the lawsuit says the man who attacked her has been convicted six times for sexual battery, is a registered sex offender and was in the "l.a. times" last year for one of his crimes. the search is on for a new air traffic control chief and for solutions to the asleep in the tower problem. the chief operating officer at the federal aviation administration is stepping down after several reports of tower controllers falling asleep on the job. the latest incident in reno wednesday morning. a controller there fell asleep and didn't respond to the pilot of a medical emergency plane that was trying to land. >> i want the flying public to know we are not sitting around making excuses. we have stepped up added more staff and i believe personal that this is an outrageous situation that will not stand on my watch. >> the faa is now making sure

that two people are always in the tower but meanwhile some sleep experts say controllers should be given the chance to nap at work. they say nighttime workers who can take a rest are more alert when they return to the job. well, maybe being more alert is what politicians have in mind when they are dozing off in public. >> yeah. yesterday we showed you vice president joe biden apparently catching a little shut eye during his speech by his boss, president obama. well, it's not the first time a politician has been nodding off. there is president clinton nodding off and president reagan. amazing all they kept all this video. and vice president dick cheney at a cabinet meeting. cheney's staff joked he was practicing meditation. >> good response. >> we all get tired no matter what we do. time now 4:56. a buck 35 for a gallon of gas? you have to see it to believe it. how a glitch caused chaos at one bay area gas station.
