to amount to much more than a few sprinkles, more cloudrain across the bay this weekend we will officially keep that threat of showers in there but again i don't think it will ruin anybody's easter egg hunt. partly cloudy across the bay, slight chance of spring showers, near normal as we expect mid-60s for the warmer locations here through the weekend, better chance of rain arrives on the here ryeson come monday and we will talk about that -- horizon and we will talk about that in your complete forecast. rebel forces in libya gaining ground yesterday they got a morale boost as mccain met with rebel leaders. he believes the u.s. needs to pledge more support for rebel forces. >> reporter: the battle took a turn for the rebels side with the capture of a building used by gadhafi loyalist snipers, that it counts as a battlefield

victory is why predator drones could make a difference. add it to a one day fact fighting mission this was the best weeks the rebels have had for some time. mccain called the members of the council a powerful and hopeful example what a free libya could be. >> they need to have sanctions that are on them on the provisional council to be lifted, they need to have in my view recognized by the united states. >> reporter: council members think they have found a friend in high places. >> we understand basic demands of the libyan people, so we are happy, glad, proud. >> reporter: rebel military effort got a vote of confidence but not a total commitment from the senator >> they also need weapons but those i think could be provided by other countries. >> you are not seeing the u.s. providing weapons for them? >> i think we could facilitate as we did in the afghan conflict against russians, but

i think other countries are able to do that. >> in a senators view what the rebel fighters need most are anti armor weapons, targeting equipment and above all better communication. as big a morale booster as senator mccain's was, the simple fact remains the conflict here is at a stale mate and neither high profile support or predator drone strikes will allow a quick fix. on to the troubles in syria, several human rights groups condemning attacks by the syrian government they claim have last dozens of protestors dead. yesterday was the single deadliest day since the demonstration started last month. as many as 76 people were shot and killed friday and estimated also 300 people have died since security forces began nary crackdown on demonstrators five weeks ago the national organization for human rights in syria is calling for a

judicial investigation into the shootings. closer to home a court date has been set for security guard at the company electronic arts, he is charged with sexually assaulting a woman who cleans the offices there. the san jose mercury news reports, the trial starts june 6th yesterday he pleaded not guilty he is accused of sexually assaulting this woman three times inside the company's offices in redwood city he allegedly threatened to have her fired or immigration status challenged if she fought back. going viral on youtube that is what is happening with san francisco's muni transit system after a passenger posted another unflattering video showing another muni train door left open the operator has been put on paid non-driving status, pending the investigation. the person who shot the video wanted to remain anonymous. >> pretty scary you know since there are times i get on the bus and it is completely packed

and i am scared to stand by the door now. >> that passenger says the operator looked at the door but left it open. the video was posted weeks after another youtube video surfaced showing another door left open on another l train muni officials say that operator did not follow safety protocol and that driver has been fired and muni fired two other employees including one caught on tape texting and driving. >> on the heels of those videos, muni transit operators are ready to go on strike if contract talks break down current contract does have a no strike clause but the union spokesman says that clause is quote open for legal interpretation and has never been tested the city attorney is warning his office will take legal recourse in the event of a strike or even threat of one >> governor brown makian appearance in san jose speaking to a group of silicon valley

ceos. trying to get his budget passed in sacramento is like being sheriff in the ok corral. getting republicans onboard to approve a ballot measure has been challenging. >> also in san jose the city's budget gap could mean a trip to the unemployment line for 600 city workers. san jose trying to close a $115 million deficit and the city is preparing to notify workers ranging from police officers to librarians, last year the city eliminated more than 700 position and laid off 215 employees, firefighters and three other unions have already agreed to 10% cuts in pay. another target store is coming to the bay area, after heated debate san raphael city council approved plans for a large target store there the council voted 3-2 in favour of amending the zoning laws to

allow the 137,000 square foot store the city will earn millions in fees and taxes from target, some local merchants though, say a big box store like target is going to hurt their businesses. others say the giant retailer will be bringing money and jobs to the city. some pricey peninsula real estate is off the market this morning a palo alto office building has been bought by germany's deutsche bank for $64 million, that is $900 a square foot that shatters the going rate for office space in palo alto. that price per square foot was the largest price per square foot of any building that had been sold in the united states in the last three years. >> the sales puts the building in the neighbourhood on some of the top commercial real estates in the country. it could be a positive sign for the silicon valley real estate market which is still reeling

well, if you or anybody you know is flying out this morning, be aware of this the main airport in st. louis is closed after a tornado ripped through the terminal last night check out this video of the damage. the tornado swept through the main structure knocking over a minibus into an embankment shattering glass and tearing through the metal at least five people were hurt, no reports of serious injuries though the airport is going to be closed indefinitely as part of the roof was ripped off flights to and from st. louis have been diverted to other cities, so one of the cases where it can be a ripple effect check your flight if you have connections

to and from that area. >> some severe damage there. it is peak season for tornadoes and severe weather across much of the midwest. spring under way there as well. as we lookout side peak spring weather for us means something entirely different, mild pattern across the bay slightly cooler temperatures mix of clouds out there today and as i said slight chance of showers lingers in our forecast here for the next couple days, not going to ruin anybody's easter egg hunt or parade or whatever festivities you have including your golf game shower activities that show up will be brief and light. i expect nothing more than a few drops as we see most of the moisture today is lost in the form of cloud layers in and around the bay partly cloudy throughout the region. slightly cooler today mostly cloudy conditions at the beach where that better chance of rain arrives here through the afternoon and abegun we will continue with the chance of showers through the weekend but there is probably more rain drops in this picture than we

will see across the area. if we get anything at all, as we see a relatively weak pattern, diffuse cloud cover and as it thins out so goes the chance of showers even in the high country sierra where they are looking at a threat of snow above 7,000 feet that too will be very light and hit or miss type drops or snowfall if any at all, so a few easter clouds through the weekend, slight chance of showers continuing, best chance of rain monday, we might pick up rain monday but even that will be on the light side less than a 10th of an inch most locations other than a few drops maybe enough to wet the streets, partly cloudy skies through the weekened these computer models are looking wetter than it does out the window if you lookout side right now you will find a mix of clouds here and again, nothing that looks too threatening at the moment but as you can see come monday morning things look to be

moistening up across the bay and could leave a little rain around for your monday morning commute here but generally speaking, we will look for more clouds and rain here with the chance as i mentioned light showers up in the high country sierra, breezy conditions there as well snow levels running 6500 feet lake levels, 5,000, that means it will be rain right at lake level snow up in the mountains and the spring run off will continue as temperatures peak out upper 40s. low 50s around the bay more of the same, no spring run offs to speak of here as again upper 50s at the beach in the mid-to low 60s elsewhere in and around the bay warmer locations, fringe locations, napa, santa rosa, liver more mid-60s. and as we look at the 5 day forecast we see that threat of showers in the picture for the weekend into the beginning of the week look what happens there after as we again expect high pressure to build into the region, drying things out and bringing a lot more sunshine

and warmer temperatures back to the area as once again we head into the mid-to low 70s by next weekend looks like that dry pattern will continue, through next weekend. so, some classic spring shower activity here for the easter holidays, otherwise, looks like a mild pattern to continue, slightly cooler temperatures, certainly tolerable. >> no one will get sun burnt on easter egg hunts. >> you could but not too wet though. >> sounds good thanks jim. >> some young people in the bay area discovering creating murals can make a difference not just in their own lives but for their neighbourhoods as well a san francisco man behind the murals this week's jefferson award winner reporter: teacher holly friel shows how muralist josef norris took a graffiti-laced wall at ida b. wells continuation high school and transformed it into a block-long masterpiece with 150 students over three years. >> what i love about these murals is that you have all

amount to much more than a few drops, if that. it's not going to ruin anybody's easter egg hunt or hats, as i mentioned, at least plenty of bonnets out and about tomorrow. partly cloudy skies throughout the bay and we'll hang on to the slight chance of showers through the weekend into monday, but temperatures will remain on the cool side as we see no threatening looking clouds out there this morning. there is kind of that feel of rain in the air, but stacking up against the foothills of the sierra at this time, more so than here at the coast. we'll keep it in the forecast, but don't count on it. >> i want to talk more about the easter bonnet thing. do people still do that? >> i think so, kind of a classic tradition. top of the news this morning, san jose budget gaps could mean a trip to the unemployment line for 600 city workers. the city is trying to close a massive $115 million deficit. and it's preparing to notify

those workers, ranging from police officers to librarians within the coming days. last year, the city eliminated more than 700 jobs and laid off 215 employees. firefighters and three other unions have already agreed to 10% cuts in pay. now this morning, berkeley residents are back inside their homes after an early morning dumpster fire forced them out. the fire started after midnight underneath an apartment complex. the fire prompted crews to evacuate 60 people from the scene, straight out of their beds, i'm sure. no injuries were reported. after three days, watsonville firefighters finally have contained a fire that destroyed an historic building. it broke out wednesday at the apple growers ice and cold storage warehouse. firefighters still can't get inside of that building. they say it is unsafe and hot spots are still popping up. the fire may have cost the martinelli cider company nearly $2 million in products.

but the worst part for neighbors is all of the smoke the fire has sent into the air over the last three days. >> i have allergies, so it's really, really hard for me. since the fire started, i've been sneezing a lot. my throat's been burning. >> an air pollution monitor shows pollution levels are below the unhealthy level. firefighters don't know when the fire is going to be extinguished. it is not clear yet what started the fire. police are searching for a man that sexually assaulted a woman near a san francisco bart station. 911 received a call about the assault around 9:00 yesterday morning. one officer saw a man who matched the attacker's description go into the 16th and mission street station. police closed the station, but they didn't find him. the suspect is described as a bald man around 6 feet tall, weighing about 275 pounds. he was wearing a black jacket,

blue shirt, and a white baseball hat. another unflattering youtube video has san francisco's muni transit system scrambling to deal with fallout. so far, three muni employees have lost their jobs after passengers uploaded these videos. new videos popped up, as you can see there, of a muni train door left open. according to muni officials, this operator has now been put on paid non-driving status, pending the investigation. remember, though, the operator caught texting and driving? her driving privileges have been revoked, but somehow the same passenger who caught her sending text messages behind the wheel and saw her driving again on thursday. >> i knew it was her. you know, i called them and they said no, she couldn't possibly be driving. >> this operator is no longer employed by the mta. >> another video shows another l train that left the door open. muni officials say the operator

did not follow safety protocol. we found out that driver has been fired. it doesn't end there. last week, a new driver still on probation forced a family off the bus, reportedly for taking too long with a stroller. muni officials say that is the third operator fired in the last three weeks. redwood city residents want to know what is behind a number of shark deaths in san mateo county. at least a dozen dead or dying leopard sharks have been spotted near the lagoon on the east side of redwood city. as robert lyles shows us, shark experts do have some theories about what may be causing the deaths. >> reporter: they have survived not one, but five mass extinctions. >> which is why we're concerned. >> reporter: concerned that the spotted leopard shark is now dying in the waters of redwood shores. >> my first gut reaction is that this is a very hearty sea piece that's been taken out. >> we've never seen sharks, and now this is two this less than a week. >> reporter: in less than a week, at least a dozen

carcasses of the bottom-feeding sharks have washed up on the shallow canal that feeds into san francisco bay. >> all the time we've lived here, we've never seen any dead sharks. maybe it's coincidence. >> reporter: maybe not. because our cameras captured more than a shark die-off. we found this one swimming yards from a decomposing leopard shark. it swam in small circles for hours, then flipping on the surface, completely out of character, say researchers. >> what suggests to you that he's disoriented? >> he almost came out of the water just a few times, right up on the shore. >> reporter: but even when rescue crews physically move the rays into open bay water, they swim right back. it's a slow and hard to watch death. >> this canal looks like it has a little bit of sediment. they may be finding little bits of food. >> reporter: that rules out that the sharks and rays are starving. two theories have risen to the

surface. the animals are trapped, for some reason unable to follow the current out, or worse, there's been a toxic spill event. >> they can typically survive a lot of pollutants in the water and a lot of adverse living conditions, so to see one die indicates that something has happened to the ecosystem. >> reporter: so right now, they wait and see. in redwood shores, robert lyles, cbs 5. this morning, libya rebel forces are making progress in the city of misrata. they have captured a building of snipers loyal to moammar gadhafi. yesterday, forces opposing the libyan leader got a morale boost, as they met with u.s. senator john mccain, making a surprise visit. the american congressman flew to libya as part of a one-day fact-finding mission. mccain confirmed his support for the rebels and urged the u.s. to offer them more military support. but he did stop short of supplying arms to the opposition forces. multiple human rights groups condemning attacks by

to low 60s for the warm spots here the next couple of days, as we see out the door this morning. we've got partly cloudy skies to mostly cloudy in and around the bay, and cool temperatures. upper 40s to low 50s prevailing out there. this afternoon, we'll look for mid to low 60s for the warmer locations. back at the coast, upper 50s, low 60s in there. this is probably more rain than we'll see through the day, as any rainfall would only amount to a couple hundredths of an inch of measurable rain across the bay. a rather diffuse system bringing in lots of clouds, but shredding as it comes ashore, not any rain. only rain i could find this morning was up against the foothills of the sierra, with the cloud deck stacking up. things thinning out around the bay. we'll hang on to the clouds and keep the slight chance of showers in the picture for the next couple of days. but keep in mind, going to be more clouds than rain through the easter weekend, as by monday we'll look at a better chance of measurable rain arriving across the bay area just about in time for your

monday morning commute, and even at that, this is going to be a tenth of an inch of rain or less here monday morning. but that nonetheless appears to be the best chance of any measurable rain for the bay area, as you can see the models bringing in a little more rain here by early in the week, which equates to a mix of rain and snow up in the highcountry of the sierra, with temperatures well above freezing here during the day. upper 40s to low 50s. that's going to add to the spring runoff and the rapid snow melt, which means in the foothills of the sierra, if you're out around any rivers, keep in mind water's going to be running high, fast and cold for some months to come here, as there are some flood advisories up in the central valley, around the rivers once again. we can expect temperatures here throughout the bay today to be in the upper 50s, low 60s at the coast and across the peninsula, with a warmer locations into the mid to low 60s here, as we'll see cloudy and cool through the weekend and, again, the possibility of a few sprinkles will remain

very spring-like weather pattern, drying out come the end of next week here, as we see a lot more sunshine and warmer temperatures returning to the bay area. so looks like spring-like weather expected here through the weekend. finally, we remain at 100% or better rainfall for this time of year, so we can certainly look for things to taper off the next couple of weeks. >> no wet easter bonnets. >> slightly damp, but not soaked. >> we were talking about how that trend seems to have phased out a little bit. my mom was talking this weekend about how she used to when she was a little kid, they had big, fancy hats, and it was quite an ordeal. >> you bet. >> sounds like fun. >> and the winds will cooperate this weekend. more of a pest than your ordinary everyday junk mail, magazines you don't even want. consumers are being tricked into subscribing. but first, here's tony t with some produce tips. pink grapefruit, we talked about red, white, but pink

at the top of the news this morning, rebel forces in libya gaining ground in the city of misrata. yesterday, they got a morale boost, as u.s. senator john mccain met with rebel leaders there. as alan pizy reports, mccain believes the u.s. needs to pledge more support for rebel forces. >> reporter: the battle for misrata took a side for the rebel, counting as a battlefield victory, a good indicator of why predator drones could make a difference. added to a one-day fact-finding mission by senator john mccain, this is the best week the rebels have had for a long time. mccain called the council a powerful and hopeful example of what a free libya could be. >> they need to have the sanctions that are on them on the provisional council to be lifted. they need to have a, in my view, to be recognized by the united states. >> reporter: council members think they have found a friend in high places.

>> we understand the basic demands of the libyan people, so we're happy, glad, proud. >> reporter: the rebel military effort also got a vote of confidence, but not a total commitment from the senator. >> we also need weapons, but those i think could be provided by other countries. >> you don't see the u.s. providing weapons? >> i think we could facilitate as we did in the afghan conflict against russians, but i think other countries are able to do that. >> reporter: the rebel fighters need most antiarmor weapons, targeting equipment, and above all, better communication. as big a morale boost as senator mccain's presence was, the simple fact remains that the conflict is a stalemate, both politically and militarily, and neither hoe profile support or predator drone strikes will provide a quick fix. claim have left dozens of the rebels in syria, several human rights groups condemning attack by the syrian

government they claim have left dozens of protesters dead. yesterday was the single deadliest day since the demonstrations began last month. human rights groups say as many as 76 people were shot and killed on friday alone. it is estimated that 300 people have died since security forces began their crackdown on demonstrators five weeks ago. the national organization for human rights in syria is calling for a judicial investigation into the shootings. all clear this morning at a berkeley apartment complex. that is after a dumpster fire forced crews to evacuate the building in the middle of the night. firefighters say the fire started after midnight underneath that apartment complex. the fire prompted crews to evacuate 60 people from their homes. no injuries were reported, though. after three days, firefighters finally have contained a fire that destroyed an historic building. it broke out wednesday at the apple growers ice and cold

storage warehouse. firefighters still can't get inside the building, though. they say it is unsafe and hot spots are still popping up. the fire may have cost the martinelli cider company nearly $2 million in products. but the worst part for neighbors, they say, is all the smoke that fire has sent into the air. check that out. over the last three days. >> i have allergies, so it's been really hard for me. since the fire started, i've been sneezing a lot. my throat's been burning. >> an air pollution monitor shows pollution levels are below the unhealthy level. firefighters don't know when the fire will be extinguished. it is not clear yet what started that fire. police are searching for a man who sexually assaulted a woman near a san francisco bart station. 911 got a call about the assault around 9:00 yesterday morning. one officer saw a man who matched the attacker's description go into the 16th and mission street station.

police closed the station to look for him, but didn't find him. the suspect is described as a bald man, around 6 feet tall, weighing 275 pounds. he was wearing a black jacket, blue shirt, and a white baseball cap. a woman accused of stalking one high tech ceo allegedly broke into google's mountain view offices last month. a google spokesperson says the 37-year-old former russian stripper followed a blind employee to get into the building. once she got inside, police say she left an angry letter for google cofounders. the woman already has one straining order against her by the founder of armville, after she allegedly threatened his family. governor jerry brown, making an appearance in san jose, speaking to a group of silicon valley ceo's yesterday. brown said trying to get a deal passed in the area is like trying to become sheriff at the

ok corral. getting republicans support for those extensions has been a real challenge. some pricey silicon valley real estate is off the market this morning, in case you were wanting to put in a bid. a palo alto office building has been purchased by deutsche bank for $64 million. that is $900 per square foot. that shatters the going rate for office space in palo alto. >> that price per square foot is the largest price per square foot of any building that has been sold in the united states in the last three years. >> the sale puts the building in the neighborhood in some of the top commercial properties in the country. it could be a positive sign for silicon valley real estate, which is still reeling from the dot-com bust. the building features two open air atriums, underground parking and fitness center. bonus, the caltrain station is right across the street.

the clock is ticking this morning, according to california lottery officials, for one lucky winner to claim

their prize. an unclaimed mega millions ticket was sold at a shell gas station in san bruno two months ago. it still hasn't been turned in, and it is worth almost $227,000. the winning ticket matched five of six numbers. 15-22-23-48-55. only the mega number, 31, kept it from being a multimillion dollar prize. lottery officials say the winners have up to six months to claim their prize. it means they have about four months left. they would not release the specific date, though, because that is one of the ways that winners are verified. how do you buy a ticket and then not check it? i guess i have to admit, i have done that. >> it's easy. >> but when you hear where the ticket was sold, i mean, you must hear that. i hope you kept it! >> lot of people scrambling, looking through the trash for that ticket. got it here somewhere, if i can just remember where i put it. put it in a safe place, i'm sure. just can't remember where it was! >> easy to do. >> it is. taking a look outside,

weekend. we'll keep a slight chance in there, but look for more clouds than rain for your easter weekend here, as we will see a better chance of rain arrive by early in the week here. looks like monday morning commute may be a bit wet out there, with the expectation of a tenth of an inch or less in the forecast at this time. the computer models bring some of that moisture sliding south into the bay area here through the wee hours of the morning monday and hanging around through about midday. now, that's going to equate to a chance of some snow up in the highcountry here above about 6500 feet to 7000 feet. snow level remains high. lake level, upper 40s to low 50s, means the spring snow melt will continue. there are flood advisories in the foothills of the sierra. rivers will be running high, fast and cold for some months to come. in the bay area, we'll catch some of the runoff coming down the delta, which will of course keep water levels high, as temperatures today will remain

in the mid to low 60s for most locations, back at the beach and across the peninsula, looking for upper 50s to low 60s. and fringe locations peaking out in the mid-60s with a threat of rain in the picture into monday. again, not expecting much in the way of accumulation. then you see what happens the rest of the week, as we dry it out and warm things back up into and through next weekend. looks like mostly sunny, as temperatures climb back into the mid to low 70s across the area for next weekend, which is a classic spring-like pattern for us, as temperatures will at that time be near normal for this time of year, as rainfall amounts right now in the 100- some percentile range for most locations. we could certainly stand to see the rain wind down. >> definitely, and we feel very lucky looking at that forecast. when you check out what happened just to our east, check out your flight plans this morning if you're flying anywhere. the main airport in st. louis is closed, after a tornado tore through at the terminal.

a palo alto after years of planning, stamford is inching closer to expanding its hospital

facilities. expectedd to cover the city's estimated losses as a result of the project. it is a $3.5 billion plan, aimed to expand packer children's hospital and stanford's hospital and clinics. it would also bring the building up to current earthquake standards. there are several more rounds of voting, though, before stanford can get the official go ahead. it is almost may, which is military appreciation month. hard to believe, but a lot of our men and women serving overseas are actually not supplied with items we seem to need to use every day. san jose-based operation care and comfort has been working to change that over the years. joining us now, cofounder julie demaria. thanks for joining us this morning. >> good morning. >> tell us about your organization. >> we started in 2003 and it really was just a volunteer effort that started in san jose and ended up going into my

garage. >> what inspired you to start this personally? do you know people in the military? >> i'm from a military family and i never served. my husband never served. i just felt like it was my time to do something, and putting care packages together was something that i did when my brother was in the military. i remember writing letters to my dad when i was 5. so it's just something that was natural to me. >> and we're looking at some pictures right now of some of the recipients. they look like a comic book, shoes, things that we all take for granted. it's almost surprising i think for a lot of people to realize that they don't have a lot of those things. tell us about the need. >> well, you know, they do have some stores set up, but all of them in iraq were closed when the drawdown took place. and even in afghanistan, the stores that are set up on some of the bases are very -- in short supply. a lot of the men and women that are in the outer regions go in, get, you know, their items and then they leave and there's

just not enough of everything to go around. >> and there's also got to be something with the fact that they got a package, they got a present, got -- somebody is thinking about them from home. tell me about that factor. >> well, if you think about receiving a box from someone that you don't know, that's got to be an amazing thing. secondly, lot of people do receive packages from families, but what about those that are serving that don't have families? >> and i see you have a letter peeking out of the makeshift care package we have here. show us what you have. >> this is a typical care package that we put together and a lot of other folks do, and you'll see that there's a letter, and we receive those from kids all over the country and also senior citizens and just church groups, and we need thousands of them every month to go into our packages. but this is one that i just literally put together last night. i just went through my cupboards and put a little bit of things together. look what a great package that is to send to the troops. >> wonderful, and i'm sure it

would have to cost a lot of money to send those things. how does the shipping process work? >> there's no -- we're all volunteers. there's no employees with our organization, so our biggest expense truly is the shipping costs, which is over a dollar a pound. we've shipped over 740,000 pounds of care packages. so we've had to raise a lot of funds to do that. every month, it's about $10,000 just to pay for shipping costs. >> what are some of the preferred things that you see in the packages? obviously the snacks are always fun to receive. what other sorts of things? >> well, everything from beef jerky, by far is the number one great item to send, because it's something that will last. >> do they not have a lot of that over there? >> no, they don't. and other things -- there are a lot of women serving, so we send things like, you know, fingernail polish, believe it or not, because they put them on their toes. and the letter we get are from
