"this broadcast realtime captioned by becky lyon." good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. ann notarangelo has the night off. it is a mystery. dead or dying leopard sharks are washing up on the peninsula. at least a dozen spotted recently in the lagoons. don knapp is in redwood city where shark experts have theories about what may be causing the deaths. >> reporter: we won't say mystery solved yet but a research groups think they have a pretty good idea what went wrong and they are focusing on that flood gate that sits between the open bay and the slough. residents of this redwood shores community are used to seeing fairly large populations of birds and other wildlife along the south bay. so when ailing sharks began to show up a few days ago they were concerned. volunteers picked up about a dozen dead and dying sharks.

another sign of trouble. >> he almost came out of the water just a few times right up on the shore. >> reporter: but rescue isn't easy. volumeneither the bat rays or sharks are starving says randy faulkner. >> they can survive pollutants in the water and adverse living conditions. so to see one die indicates something happened to the eco system. >> reporter: today scientists were leaning towards a not so obvious reason. suffocation. this flood gate may have been closed blocking the flow of water from the bay allowing the sea life to deplelete oxygen.

now that developers know the problems. perhaps they can develop healthier canals. >> thank you. native americans trying to block construction over a sacred burial site held a vigil and interfaith gathering today. this is the ninth day they are protesting plans to build a parking lot and public bathroom on the land at glen cove waterfront park in vallejo. the native americans say the ancient burial ground is sacred space and shouldn't be touched. >> it is beautiful. i think that we have people from all walks of life that have come out to support us and to pray with us and that understand what the issues are and really want this place to remain open land. >> the u.s. department of justice and state senator noreen evans stepped in to encourage all sides to reach a compromise. oakland is experiencing a crime decline in some

neighborhoods. statistics released today for areas between east and west oakland show even seven fewer shootings, nine fewer rapes and 118 fewer robberies for the first quarter of this year compared to last. however, the same period did see two more homicides. for one neighborhood in oakland the way to fight crime is cameras. anne makovec on how businesses are protecting themselves with pictures. >> we have to protect ourselves. >> reporter: over the past year more chinatown businesses have been using cameras to ward off crime. >> i have the camera on the sidewalk and i have the camera inside the store. >> reporter: he spent almost $1000. >> it is okay, it is good to have, yes. >> it is worth it? >> it is, yes. >> reporter: among all the store owners i spoke with in this neighborhood there was a sense of needing to take matters into their own hands because with limited budgets there is only so much they could count on the police to do. >> if you call the police what will they do? >> reporter: this restaurant owner doesn't have faith in the

cameras either. she says video has not been helpful. she had her windows broken twice. >> we saw somebody but you couldn't see their face because they covered a jacket, with a hood over their head. nothing you can do. >> reporter: but add an event to roll out a new dozen cameras around the lincoln neighborhood center the police say they work. >> we have seen a drop in crime in this area. i don't care if you have a hoodie or not we will stop you and question you and figure out what is going on. >> we will not monitor it until something happens and we will work with the police department. >> reporter: but this local crime prevention chair had some advice. >> so when you come down to chinatown be sure to smile and don't try to cheat on your wife and bring your girlfriend here. >> reporter: you might have one fewer restaurants to come to. this owner is ready to sell. >> nothing you can do i tell you. there is nothing you can do. >> reporter: anne makovec in oakland, cbs5. a smash and grab robbery

left an employee injured. police say three men entered the store yesterday and pepper sprayed the clerk. they smashed display cases and grabbed several expenses watches before making their get away. police are still searching for the suspects. pension and salaries were common complaints at a san francisco town hall meeting. the city is grappling with a $300 million deficit and many people including the mayor say a big chunk of savings must come from the pensions from salaried employees but talks with muni and police officers' unions have stalled. >> we negotiate all of our difference out and in these very hard times, these very hard economic times it is not about pointing the finger and blaming it is about how do we resolve it. >> the mayor says the town hall meetings are useful for helping city leaders understand the public sentiment. he said the input helps in making the tough decisions over cutbacks. hundreds of san jose city workers will learn in the coming weeks if they will lose their jobs in june. the city is trying to close a

$115 million budget gap. and says it still needs concessions from several unions. the decision on the layoffs will come when the city releases its budget may 2nd. checking some other headlines around the bay area. a santa clara woman arrested after leaving her toddler locked inside her suv while she played cards at the garden city casino. the woman was spotted by surveillance cameras about 5:30 thursday evening. a guard spotted the child inside the car an hour later. the little girl was hot but okay. she was released to her father's custody. a funeral today for andy jang, the 16-year-old found shot to death in a san francisco home last weekend. a 15-year-old friend is charged with murder. an 18-year-old is also charged with trying to set the home on fire to conceal the body. both suspects have claimed the

shooting was an accident. also an unusual earth day event this weekend focuses on cannabis. the deep green celebration in richmond fearure -- feature features exhibits and other things. why a family is suing and who they say is to blame for a tree falling. the final chapter for a bay area bookstore. what's forcing the owners to close up shop for good. i'm meteorologist lawrence karnow in the cbs5 weather center. a lot of clouds around the bay area. starting to see scattered shores showing up. we will talk about that coming up.

that way for months. flights may resume tomorrow. two planes had significant damage. the storm also flattened homes in the suburbs around the airport. missouri's governor says president obama pledged federal aid. the family of a san jose boy that killed when a rotted tree fell on their pickup truck last year is suing the city. the 2-year-old child died when the 10-ton maple crushed the cab while he sat outside a relatives home. both the city and neighbor whose property was adjacent for the tree are named in the wrongful death suit. the city already rejected an earlier claim for damages. it is the final chapter for a beloved bookstore in the heart of the castro. a different gay book shown is set to close its doors by the end of the month. reports suggest it was struggling financially. the store opened in 1985 and quickly became a social hub.

the annual event at mosswood in oakland is o that's the sound of 1000 kids on the hunt for easter eggs. the annual event at mosswood park in oakland. one of the biggest free events for kids in the city. the easter egg hunt is sponsored by the parks and recreation department which estimates that they will help out the easter bunny by giving out half a million pieces of candy. can you believe that? we are still looking for the infamous golden egg from last year's easter egg hunt. nobody found it. >> golden egg that nobody

found. >> maybe somebody will find it. >> few showers out there right now. we are just picking up on some of that. may see a couple light showers. i don't think it will be a rain out. but a chance of spritzels. live cam. looks like a mostly cloudy day and night coming tomorrow. temperatures staying down because of the cloud cover but not all that bad. high-def doppler picking up on some of that precipitation. light showers now making their way in across the bay area. we will see more of that as we head through the evening. you've got some showers now making their way in towards the east bay. also a few showers. also into the north bay we are seeing scattered showers but these are really just light amounts of showers. folks, if we see 500ths of an inch of rainfall out of the system that will be pretty impressive. plan for tomorrow. mostly cloudy skies. a chance of a few showers. not going to be any heavy rainfall but bring that umbrella if you're headed out. temperatures in the 60s coast side. temperatures right now if

you're stepping outside. 64 degrees in livermore. 65 in mountainview. 55 and cool in pacifica. in the high country heading up that way. plan on a few showers. especially on monday. that's when another storm system. a stronger storm system going to start to slide into the bay area and up into the mountains to bring you rainfall. this is our infrared satellite picture. this is pretty much low level moisture moving through the bay area right now. bringing that slight chance of showers. that's why you're not going to see that heavy rainfall as we head throughout the night tonight. computer models picking up on it pretty well. just some scattered stuff as we roll the clock forward 8 p.m. tonight. scattered showers on and off. a band of moisture late tonight and into tomorrow morning. on easter sunday you may see showers so plan for that as we head into the early morning then as we head through the day a chance of a few scattered

showers around the bay area then starts to diminish as we look towards tomorrow evening. temperatures not all that bad for what looks like a pretty cloudy day. 50s coast side. low to mid-60s in many of the interior spots. next couple days i think a better chance of some rainfall as we head into monday. the entire bay area. then it will start drying out as we head into tuesday although it will be a bit on the breezy side on tuesday. temperatures going to be warming up into the 70s as we head through the middle of the week. probably cooling off a little bit on thursday. then we look towards next weekend staying nice and dry. easter sunday mostly cloudy skies chance of a couple of scattered light showers. temperatures mainly in the 50s coast side much lots of 50s inland. that's a look at weather. here is kim coyle with sports. two timmy's. one gets a win and one gets a loss. that's coming up in sports. ,,,,,,

win the series and be the first team to ever come back from the 3-0. >> scary moment in the 1st for the bulls. derrick rose lands awkwardly and strains his ankle. he would return. the 2nd quarter the ankle seems to be okay. rose with a series low 15 points. indy led by double figures most of the second half. putting them up 13 with 2 minutes to go. the bulls made a serious comeback and had a shot to tie it but carlos misses the 3 and the pacers win to see another day forcing a game 5 tuesday night in chicago. mavs playing the blazers. the lead disappeared thanks to brandon roy. tied at 82. the former washington husky scored 18 of his 24 points in the 4th quarter. then with under a minute to go, roy gets in the lane and banks it in to give the blazers the lead. they close the game on a 40-15

run and stun the mavs to even the series at two games a piece. former warrior jason richardson and hawks big man zaza have each been suspended for game 4 after their little altercation last night which led to both of their ejections. atlanta leads the series against orioles two games to one. some sad nfl news. brandon marshall underwent emergency surgery this morning after being stabbed in the stomach last night by his wife who was later arrested for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. earthquake appealing to a higher power for their match with chivas u.s.a. tied at 1. a stop by john bush. butchivas win. nhl playoffs. tampa bay goes on the road and
