at the time of that airstrike. we do know it caused significant damage. this as the conflict is looking more and more like a military stalemate. joel brown is in washington with details. joel, good morning to you. >> terrell, good morning to you. it was an especially bloody weekend in libya, with gadhafi's forces pounding one rebel stronghold, and then at the dictator's compound, nato warplanes turned the table. the overnight air strike targeted the heart of moammar gadhafi's regime. his compound in tripoli. state tv showed the rebel from what it said was a library, and office. a libyan official reported four people hurt. it's unknown if gadhafi was present when the attack occurred. while his compound has been hit before, this strike was the most significant yet. and comes just hours after u.s. lawmakers hit the airwaves to demand more be done to drive the libyan dictator from power. >> the people around gadhafi need to wake up every day wondering, will this be my last? the way to get gadhafi to leave is have his inner circle break and turn on him, and that's going to take a sustained etch

for the through an air campaign. i think the focus should now be to cut the head of the snake off. that's the quickest way to end this. >> reporter: monday's strike came after the libyan military unleashed a brutal assault on the rebel-held city of misrata. government forces pounded the city with heavy weapons, including artillery shells and rocket fire. at least 32 people were killed over the weekend. hundreds have died in the past two months. at one point over the weekend, a government spokesman said they were withdrawing from misrata for negotiations. but that appears to be just a ploy. in addition to all the casualties in misrata, thousands more are stranded in that city under siege, many of them foreign workers. terrell? >> joel brown in washington, thank you. meanwhile in syria the movement against president bashar al assad is escalating as is the deadly government respon response. there are reports the government troops stormed the damascus suburb overnight killing at least 1 more people. on saturday, at least 12 mourners attending a funeral in

a damascus suburb were killed and on friday at least 100 people were killed by syrian security forces. it was the bloodiest day since the anti-government protests began some five weeks ago. there's been a massive prison break in afghanistan. carried out by the taliban. more than 450 prisoners escaped from the main prison in kansas har. the taliban dug a tunnel into the jail. the tub was over 1,000 feet long and took over five months to

rain, in the same areas, could lead to flooding. officials in missouri credit the tornado warning system with saving lives when a powerful twister hit on friday. up to 100 homes were destroyed in the st. louis area, and 2700 buildings were destroyed. but no one was killed, and there were no serious injuries. the storm packed winds up to 200 miles per hour. residents are still in disbelief. >> it really hasn't set in yet. i think the adrenaline has just been going. i think it's going to probably hit in the next day or two where i'm just going to lose it. >> entire subdivisions in nine communities were destroyed. but residents had a half-hour warning that that storm was coming. this video from friday night, the tornado took dead aim at the st. louis airport. several hundred passengers were waiting in the terminal. it was severely damaged. five people were injured. the airport is partially reopened but dozens of flights

have been canceled. this morning a nationwide manhunt is under way for the man suspected in the attempted bombing of a colorado shopping mall. the fbi says earl albert moore is considered armed and dangerous. he has an extensive criminal background. he was released from prison on april 13th. a pipe bomb and two propane tanks were discovered at the mall last wednesday. the explosives didn't detonate, and no one was injured. the body of an idaho silver miner caught in a tunnel collapse has been recovered. the tunnel caved in nine days ago. larry maris was working with his brother who escaped. his body was discovered yesterday. it's not clear why the tunnel collapsed. congresswoman gabrielle giffords will attend her husband's launch aboard the "endeavour" space shuttle friday. giffords is recovering from an assassination attempt in january. her husband, shuttle commander mark kelly, told katie couric his wife has been working for this for months. >> have you gotten any word on whether gabby will, in fact, be able to attend the launch? >> yes, i met with her doctors,

[ gunshots ] police say the man started firing on sunday and hit the chopper's fuel tank. it was forced to make an emergency landing. there were no injuries. a transgender victim who was beaten in a baltimore mcdonald's is speaking out, saying it was a hate crime. the video of last week's attack was posted on the internet. two young women are now facing charges. the victim says that first, one

of the women attacked her, then the other one did. >> the other girl came up, spit in my face, and they started ripping my hair, throwing me on the floor, kicking me in my face. they really hurt me really bad. and i'm just afraid to go outside now because of stuff like this. >> advocates for transgender rights plan to rally tonight outside that mcdonald's. on "cbs moneywatch" this morning, gold hits a new high, and sony playstation gets hacked. ashley morrison here in new york with that and more. ashley, good morning to you. >> good morning to you, terrell. a mixed day for the asian markets. tokyo's nikkei dipped slightly while hong kong's hang seng drifted up about 1%. and the price of oil is on the rise again nearing $113 a barrel. today, wall street gets the very latest on new home sales and this is another big week for earnings, with netflix, delta and microsoft among the big names to report. last week stocks finished with solid gains. the dow picked up more than 1%, while the nasdaq gained 2%. the pain at the pump continues. gas prices have jumped 12 cents in just the past two weeks.

and 70 cents in the past couple of months to a nationwide average of $3.88 a gallon. the chicago area has the highest prices in the country. tucson has the lowest, and the run-up comes despite us using less of it. actual gas consumption in this country is now down 2%. the gold rush is showing little signs of easing up. the price for the precious metal rose more to more than $1,517 in asia, that is a record high. it's now risen more than 165% just since 2006. investors often turn to gold as a safe haven when they're worried about uncertainty in the stock market. sony could lose millions after an apparent cyber attack knocked its playstation network offline. the service, which lets gamers from all over play together in realtime, was turned off wednesday so the company could investigate what appears to be an attack by hackers. the network still is not online. sony said it is working around the clock on rebuilding it.

how to evaluate schools and teachers. los angeles school officials have released information for parents to see how their kids are doing in their schools. ben tracy reports. >> this is terrible. terrible. >> reporter: mark got some bad news this week. the elementary school his ton attends is considered below average in both english and math. >> i fear for my child's education, what's going to happen in the future. >> reporter: mark now knows this thanks to something called value-added analysis. a way to evaluate teachers and their schools. it takes students past test scores and predicts how they should do the next year. if they do better than expected the teacher added value. if they do worse, the teacher subtracted value. los angeles public schools brand-new superintendent made the data public on the district's website for the first time this month. >> i think we're obligated to help teachers grow in this skill set, and one of the ways to do that is to understand how students are actually doing over time. >> reporter: but many teachers

feel test scores should not be the main way we judge teachers. because every student is different. >> we're not working in a factory with little parts of machines. we're working with human beings. >> reporter: yet school district leaders say test scores are necessary. simply sitting in teachers' classrooms for a day to evaluate them hasn't worked because almost all teachers end up ranked at least satisfactory. so now they want to grade their teachers with test scores. but the union is not happy. >> we don't want a system where we eventually get to a place where principals can fire teachers because their test scores aren't good enough. that's not the kind of education system that we need. >> reporter: even supporters of value-added analysis admit it should not be the only way to measure teachers. >> it's not a silver bullet. not perfect. but it's a critical tool that parents need to have in their tool box, and we're talking about empowering parents to take back their schools for their kids. >> reporter: parents like mark. >> i want a better education for them. >> reporter: who just want to make sure their kids can succeed. ben tracy, cbs news, los

for friday's royal wedding, central london will be in a security lockdown. police helicopters will be flying above the city. they're also using thousands of surveillance cameras and sniffer dogs to track any potential threats. and elite sniper teams will be deployed to make sure that nothing goes wrong. meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of visitors are arriving in london for the big day. but residents of the british capital are on their way out. michelle miller has that part of the story. >> reporter: the crowds milling around westminster abbey today were counting down to the royal wedding. >> going to be spectacular. you know how to say. >> reporter: event? >> yeah, yeah. >> reporter: tourists are flocking to london. by friday the number of visitors to the city is expected to double to more than 1 million. for some businesses, it's a bonanza. shopkeepers can't keep wedding souvenirs like the mug in stock.

how many have you sold? >> more than 900. in two weeks. >> reporter: hotels are trying to cash in, as well. this one offered a $330,000 package that included a room, and a ring of your design. so far, there've been no takers. >> i would strongly suggest that you get in quickly. it's a bargain. >> reporter: even though there's been a surge in visitors, it hasn't lived up to the early predictions from the british tourism industry. occupancy rates are far from full. >> about 70%. higher than they would normally be at this time of the year. but it's not full. >> reporter: travel editor peter greenberg says the spring timing of the event made it more difficult for americans than the summer wedding of charles and diana 30 years ago. >> could be the televised event of the decade. but in terms of actual number of americans coming here, not even close to 1981. >> reporter: but for many in britain, the timing was perfect. were a long easter weekend at one end, and an extra day off to
