>> and good wednesday morning to you. beautiful shot of the tower bridge. 7:00 a.m. on the west coast, 3:00 p.m. here in london where the city is in full preparation mode for the royal wedding, less than two days away now. there is breaking news to get to back at home. for that, my colleague, chris wragge standing by. we will get back to you. the president speaking moments ago. for that and the rest of the breaking headlines, jeff glor at the news desk. good morning. good morning to everyone at home. president obama made it as clear as he can, he was born in the united states. for the if irs time this morning, the white house released a long-form cope of mr. obama's birth certificate showing he was born in honolulu in august, 1961. for years, some have questioned
7:02 am
that. cbs news senior white house correspondent, bill plante, has more from the white house where the president just finished speaking. kind of an extraordinary news conference here this morning. >> it was preceded by a white house briefing with are officials brought out this letter they had received a certified cope of the long-form birth certificate. they said they had regarded the issue asset ld even though they knew there were people who doubted it. our polls showed that 25% of all people doubt that the president was born in the u.s. and 45% of republicans doubt it. yet, the white house said they were ready to ignore this until in recent weeks and they didn't mention donald trump's name, it began to overshadow the debate about what they considered the important things, the debate over the finances of the nation to come. the debt and the deficit. the white house put it out and they said, they put it this way. here is their spin. this he said, look, this would have played out to the president's advantage if we had
7:03 am
let it stay out there. the president thought it was more important to bring the debate around to what's really, really important. the president came out and here is how he put it? >> i know that there is going to be a segment of people for which no matter what we put out, this issue will not be put to rest. but i'm speaking to the vast majority of the american people as well as to the press. we do not have time for this kind of silliness. we got better stuff to do. i've got better stuff to do. we have got big problems to solve. i am confident we can solve them. we are going to have to focus on them, no the on this. >> those big problems he is talking about solving have to do with the economy, with the debate over the republican budget versus the president's budget. that's what he wants to concentrate on and they move to get the birther thing behind him. there is no question, i think,
7:04 am
that this was generated by donald trump over the last couple of weeks. >> yet shall the president specifically did not mention trump at all in this news conference this morning. >> no, he didn't. white house officials who spoke about it earlier didn't mention trump either. they won't dignify him by mentioning his name. it seemed quite clear that without trump driving this over the past couple of weeks, the issue wouldn't have exploded to the point where they felt that they had to do something about it. >> bill plante at the white house. thank you very much. we are also learning more this morning about president obama's plans for national security. he is going to announce a couple of big changes. >> c.i.a. director, leon panetta is expected to be nominated as the new defense secretary to replace gates. general petraeus is pekts td to be nominated to head the cia. >> in afghanistan, eight nato
7:05 am
troops, some americans, have been killed by an attack by an afghan officer. david martin has the latest this morning on that from the pentagon. david, good morning to you. >> good morning, jeff. >> you have got it right. eight nato troops at least some, if not all of them, americans, killed when an afghan army air force officer got in some sort of argument and opened fire. we don't know the substance of the argument or why so many soldiers from nato were hit. aparnltly, no afghan soldiebega soldiers were killed. this undermines the whole strategy in afghanistan, to build up the afghan national security forces so that u.s. troops no longer have to do the fighting. here, we have the people we are counting on as our exit strategy suddenly opening fire on nato troops. >> david, incidents like this have been a continuing problem,
7:06 am
right? >> well, there have been. sometimes, it is as a result of an argument. other times, it is as a red light of infiltral traitors, taliban infiltrators who go there to get a chance to kill an american. >> david martin, appreciate your reporting. in syria, witnesses say more tanks and troops rolled into the southern town of daraa, syria. protesters took to the streets again today. more than 450 civilians have been killed in demonstrations since last month. nato released video of the air strike on moammar gadhafi's compound in tripoli. monday war planes took out vehicles and flattened buildings. gadhafi was not there and survived. house republicans are back home for the first time since passing a deficit budget plan.

paul ryan, the reception he got was less than friendly. representative ryan attended four town hall meetings in wisconsin yesterday where he heard from voters about his budget plan, which includes major changes to medicare. >> you are screwing our generation and the next generation. >> so the alternative is, this is a debt crisis. is that your point? are you saying cut spending faster and deeper. >> i am saying your plan screws the next two generations. >> representative ryan has four more town hall meetings. a court appearance for earl moore, the suspect in the attempted bombing of a littleton shopping mall. he was arrested yesterday. police do not think that incident was coincided to go along with the come um bin shootings. they are investigating an accident at midway airport as a plane skidded off the runway. 139 people were on board that

7:09 am
that came through velonia here on monday night. >> it used to sit on a foundation some 60 yards from here and destroyed some 60 homes and caused widespread damage. this tornado was between half a mile and a mile wide. it was on the ground from 11-13 miles when it went over the most populated parts of the city. the death toll stands at 11:00 across the state of arkansas. four of those are from tornado deaths that we are certain of. the other seven -- >> that was don teague reporting for us in balonia, arkansas. having some signal issues. >> we will move into southeast missouri where waterlogged levees have been under pressure for days. cbs news correspondent, cynthia bauers is in poplar bluff with the latest.
7:10 am
>> reporter: good morning, chris. you can see in the house behind me, the water, the river has started to go down a little bit. this despite more than an inch of rain last night and 15 inches of rain over the last few days. that same storm system that has been moving through, bringing tornadic activity to the south has been dumping a lot of rain here. the levee runs on both sides of the black river through town. it is the south levee that has been problematic. more than three dozen overruns, the water spilling over the levee as well as several holes busted in the levee. 1,100 people have been evacuated. they have been putting people up at a coliseum. >> what is that going to mean for the levees today? yesterday, when we spoke with the governor, there was talk that one of the levees may need to be breached to free things
7:11 am
up. >> the governor of missouri is fighting the governors and leaders in other states. it would happen along the mississippi river and would flood 130,000 acres of prime missouri farmland and that land would be lost for about a decade. missouri says no. the army core of engineers and other states say yes. the news here is the river is starting to go down. the levee, it looks like, might hold. we are getting more rain today. it depends on how much rain we get and how much more pressure the levee is

going on around this town. the flowers at the palace, they have gotten a pruning recently. the big show was early this morning at about 5:00 this morning. hundreds of u.k. troops parading through london, timing this profession down to the second. there was an empty carriage at one point that the mount td calvary was escorting through the street. it will take them after they say their "i-dos." they need to spruce that up too. a lot of work going on all around london getting ready for the big day. erica? >> in terms of the sprucing up of the abbey, that's one of the things we are going to be showing later in the show. they actually brought in a bunch of live trees. we look forward to seeing more on that. how are the crowds out there?
7:15 am
they seem to be everywhere. i even saw on the news this morning, there were plenty of people up for that pre-dawn rehearsal. . >> reporter: there are some die-hard folks. a lot of people live in the streets watching the rehearsal. there are real die-hard people camping out in tents. you see them there outside westminster abbey. they want a front row street for this piece of history that's going to pass them by on friday. for about 24 hours, these people have been sitting in tents on the sidewalk. they still have a good day and a half to go before any real action slows up on the doorstep there. so these are people who really, really are committed to seeing this event firsthand. hopefully, their patients will pay off and they will have a front row seat, erica? >> you have met a number of people from the states and you are going to introduce us to some of them later, correct? >> we did. with he met five women outside

7:17 am
we will find out on friday. erica? >> so much speculation. then, that is typically almost a wedding gift, correct, that the queen would bestow upon the royal couple. that title and perhaps it may be a duke dom of some sort. >> reporter: exactly. the queen is the only one that can do that. there is some precedent that on the morning of the wedding, usually, she gives out a new title. cambridge, a city to the north, that would be quite an honor for her grandson and new granddaughter in law. erica? >> indeed. now, we have two surprises waiting for us on friday morning. what the title will be, and, of course, the dress. ben tracy at buckingham palace, thanks. still ahead on "the early show," we continue our coverage of the royal wedding with the latest pictures of the bride and a peek at that garden we mentioned that is now growing inside the abbey. pictures you will not want to miss. stay with us. you are watching "the early

on tuesday, astronaut mark kelly and his five crew mates flew to the kennedy center, before they head on their final space mission on "endeavour." this morning, katie couric and the shuttle commander talk about the mission as he juggles very important family matters as well. >> for astronaut mark kelly,

nasa leadership thought very carefully about and talked with mark and his crew, and came to that decision together, that if anything were to happen, mark would have a focus on the issue at hand and be able to deal with it. >> you've been in mark's shoes before, most recently in 2009 with the shuttle "atlantis." what exactly is he doing right now? >> this is what we call l minus two, two days before launch. you have a chance to fly the shuttle train aircraft, do some practice dives before you launch and then there's some time in the evening tonight for a family barbecue, where just a few guests get to come and go out to the beach house with the crew, and the last chance to sort of have a social experience and say good-bye for a little while. >> then it's all straight down to business. a little bittersweet for you to see this, too, the end of an era, the shuttle missions. >> it is. it's hard to see them being retired. the shuttle was a great program. i loved every minute i had on board. i'd be ready to go down and jump
