name it. >> we were concerned about that in the morning. >> it was awesome. i was starving! if you are heading out today, we have a nice day. the fog is back. temperatures will take a major hit around the bay area some places dropping more than 20 degrees from yesterday. you will see 64 with partly cloudy skies in san francisco. 65 in oakland. 71 in concord. and a pleasant 73 degrees in san jose. we'll have the mother's day forecast coming up in just a minute. right now, let's check on traffic with elizabeth. >> thank you. highway 4 we have this overnight roadwork in effect until 5:30 this morning. a full freeway closure eastbound 4 from loveridge to somersville. westbound is fine. friday light at the bay bridge toll plaza. we'll have more traffic coming up. back to you. >> thank you. 4:31. we have breaking news in san francisco. a car hits and kills a pedestrian this morning. >> and now the alleged driver is injured and in the hospital. anne makovec is at the scene

with what we have just learned from police. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i'm here at masonic and golden gate in san francisco right by usf. the person's body is still in the roadway here this morning. the medical examiner is here and the investigation is under way. but a 55-year-old man was apparently hit and killed by a 23-year-old who was coming through this area. now, there aren't any crosswalks near where the body is this morning so it isn't clear if this man was crossing the road, in a crosswalk at the time but we know he has passed away. take a look at some video we shot just a couple of hours ago. the car apparently after hitting this man sped off and then crashed here at st. mary's medical center and met some planters. that's where the driver was injured. he was arrested and taken to the hospital. he is again 23 years old.

and he has gotten a few blocks from the original trash site. this is where he landed, crashed his car and was arrested by police. so couple of blocks closed, turk, masonic and golden gate as police continue their investigation. back to you guys. >> thank you. no official city celebration but that didn't stop people from taking to the streets of san jose for cinco de mayo yesterday. police were out in full force last night and broke up gathering crowds in various parts of the city. one stabbing was reported and there were a number of fights. also, there are reports of scattered vandalism, mostly broken windows. we'll have a live report from kiet do at 5:00. today the united states carrying out its first drone attack in pakistan since the death of al qaeda leader osama bin laden. >> that is the word from pakistani intelligence officials who say 10 people were killed in a hail of

missiles near the afghan border. that area is known as the al qaeda and taliban stronghold and here in the united states joel brown reports on a special thank you today for the navy seal team that took down bin laden. reporter: president obama gets the chance to shake hands today with some of the operatives who helped take down osama bin laden. he will meet privately with them at fort campbell, kentucky, where he will also address soldiers just back from afghanistan. thursday, the president was in new york city offering a personal thank you to 9/11 first responders. >> and i know i speak for military teams and intelligence teams that helped get bin laden in saying that we know the sacrifices and the courage that you show as well. >> reporter: he later paid tribute to some of the victims at ground zero and met with some of their families. intel gathered from bin laden's compound show al qaeda was considering attack u.s. trains on the 10th anniversary of

9/11. memos reference a list of potential plots against major cities including new york, los angeles, chicago and d.c. >> that's very, uhm, scary to say the least. >> reporter: officials say the plans were wishful thinking if anything and there is no evidence of any active plot. still, that's not enough to ease the minds of some commuters. >> that's not reassuring at all. i'm already nervous enough about flying and living in d.c. and working near capitol hill. so that's not good news. >> reporter: as the search for any new terror plots continues, more details are emerging about how officials tracked down bin laden. the cia reportedly kept a safe house near his compound in pakistan where a small team of spies conducted extensive surveillance for months. joel brown, cbs news, washington. the pentagon is telling pakistan, give us back our helicopter. the chopper that the seals had to destroy in the compound was unlike any other. the pakistanis have hauled the tail section away but an

aviation expert tells cbs news from the photos it appears the tail rotor has an extra number of blades which would make it more quiet than a standard blackhawk helicopter plus instead of being constructed with sharp edges it has gentler curves to help avoid radar. we are learning more about the burial. president obama told steve kroft of "60 minutes" the u.s. took the high road. >> what we tried to do, consulting with experts in islamic law and ritual, to find something that was appropriate, that was respectful of the body. frankly, we took more care on this than obviously bin laden took when he killed 3,000 people. he didn't have much regard for how they were treated and desecrated. but that again is something that makes us different. >> and you can see steve kroft's entire interview with

the president sunday at 7:00 here on cbs 5. and we invite you to stay with us for continuing coverage of the death of osama bin laden. everybody is okay after a gas leak in pleasant hill. pg&e crews got the leak capped up. the leak was on oak park boulevard between stevenson drive and keith circle. it was first reported just after 9:30 last night and was stopped before 11:00. state regulators have denied pg&e's request to begin tracking costs and charging customers more. the utility wants to keep official track of costs associated with safety improvements since the deadly san bruno disaster. that would be a necessary step for pg&e to pass any of those expenses along to its customers. but consumer advocacy groups say that would amount to a blank check for pg&e and now

the puc has rejected the utility's request. at the same time, pg&e now has permission to charge more to make up for lost profits. it's compensation for having to dump old analog meters that were still working and putting in smartmeters instead. the puc will allow pg&e to raise revenue it collects from cuss mears by nearly $2 billion over the next three years. that is less than half of what pg&e wanted. the utility plans and electricity rate increase in january. i think i speak for all of us here at cbs 5. aren't you glad the weekend is here? >> it is here. it is here. >> weather-wise a mixed bag, huh, lawrence? >> yeah. we had the heat. we are getting back to much cooler weather around the bay area. fog is onshore, the sea breeze kicking in. temperatures really take a nosedive today. outside right now 51, fog in san francisco. 58 san jose. 61 in concord. this afternoon, yeah, remember we had those 90s around the bay

area in some parts yesterday? the past couple of days. not today. still see pleasant 70s well inland but inside the bay you will notice the difference. 65 degrees in oakland, about 64 in san francisco. and about 59 and foggy in pacifica. so looking out toward that weekend, yup, we have more clouds on the way. we will continue to cool and mother's day looks cloudy here in the bay area. there is even a slight -- just a slight chance of a few showers. not going to be much but there is a possibility towards sunday. come monday high pressure will move back in and higher temperatures next week. i just learned and will pass along to you that ace train service is free today. it's rider appreciation day. so there you go. ace train number one is also on time. bart systemwide looks good to go, muni and caltrain also no delay this morning. bridge check, the dumbarton bridge may still be a little

ongoing roadwork on the span but no delay towards menlo park. ignore that live traffic sensors. these are live so they update live on the air. here's live look right now at the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are off. easy ride right now into san francisco across the upper deck. we have been talking about this road closure all week long. this is roadwork part of the highway 4 widening project. pittsburg eastbound 4 between loveridge and somersville road all the eastbound lanes are blocked until 5:30 this morning so detour signs are in place from cal tracks. and to the south bay we go -- from caltrans. and the to the south bay roadwork between story road and capital spread on 101. no big delays. guadalupe parkway traffic fine and obviously very friday light in the northbound lanes of 280 approaching the 880 interchange. we'll have more traffic coming up. in the meantime, back to you. >> thank you. okay. so you are planning a little weekend getaway? the new way for bay area travelers to jet off to mexico

35% from february alone. now people are driving a little less and easing gas demand. one expert says the national average could be back to 3.50 a gallon by mid-june. triple-a reports the average in san francisco is 4.32. if you are filling up in oakland it's 4.27. experts don't expect any change in the nation's jobless rate. we'll get the new numbers from the labor department in 45 minutes. analysts expect it to stay at 8.8% and they also think that the economy added 185,000 jobs last month. that's down from 216,000 in march. stray papers are littering parts of marin county including confidential documents like medical records and divorce forms. it's a result of a mishap on highway 101 last weekend. the owner of bakers moving and

storage says a flatbed trailing was hauling all these boxes in san rafael when a tire blew. the boxes spilled and thousands and thousands of papers went flying. one woman found a lot of them in her terra linda neighborhood. >> i have found numbers, social security numbers. i haven't found any medical documents today but sunday when my husband and i were coming back from breakfast, we found medical documents on the sidewalk. >> and if you take a look, much of the debris remains alongside u.s. 101 almost a week after the spill. som of the documents are connected to an attorney. he is working to determine which files are lost to keep his clients' confidential information from being compromised. >> might want to get out there and clean it up. >> yeah. the low cost mexican airline is expanding in the bay area. festivities are planned at the oakland international airport

as volaris kicks off its inaugural flight to mexico city. the 5-year-old airline will expand its oakland-guadalajara service. they also offer service out of mineta international airport in san jose. and speaking of san jose airport, its official name will remain the same, norman y. mineta san jose international airport. city leaders were considering adding silicon valley to the name in hopes of attracting more international flights but the city council committee looking into several ways to help the airport compete decided it's not necessary to mess with the name and it's a mouthful anyway. >> like it just the way it is. 4:46. she went to the dentist and came home with a different voice. how surgery left one woman talking with a british accent. >> fighting back against braves and burglars. how one bay area neighborhood is using stickers to protect their home. the race to control flooding in the south. the major problems at one airport. coming up. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

neighborhood hope stickers will keep them safe. sh people in the south fremont neighborhood hope stickers will keep them safe. residents have reported a rash of home burglaries, the most recent yesterday morning. a thief held a knife to the woman's throat. police are warning home owners to keep their doors and windows locked. one woman started creating windshield stickers for her neighbors. >> anytime any of us are in the neighborhood during the day we make sure all the cars belong here. >> three suspects have been arrested. neighbors think they are being targeted because they are close to the freeway and burglars can make a quick getaway. the folks in charge of california's high-speed rail system have delayed a decision that could affect service north of san jose. the cost saving plan would electrify caltrain tracks north of the diridon station. initially now high-speed rail would have reduced speed on that stretch having to share

those two tracks with caltrain. the authority now plans to decide next month whether to fully study the proposal. oakland mayor jean quan is heading to china today to try to drum up business for her city. quan and other officials want to increase the volume of trade through the port of oakland. $14billion in trade move between the port and china just last year alone. in particular, quan is focusing in on exports that could generate jobs and increase local tax revenue. it is just what they don't need in the mississippi river valley more rain but it is in the forecast in the area that's having the worst flooding in decades. the flooding east of it though when they blew some holes in levees in missouri. down river an airport near downtown memphis inundated after a levee failed. they are using sandbags to try to contain the flooding. we are in for big changes in the weather department here as we are going to see much cooler temperatures around the

bay area. already seeing that onshore flow kicking in and guess what's showing u we haven't seen that in days. the fog is showing up along the coastline some of that slipping inside the bay still mostly clear inland. this afternoon, temperatures taking a nosedive from yesterday's highs, many place more than 20 degrees cooler than yesterday. still, you will find pleasant sunshine inland, 60s and upper 70s in some of the warmer spots. you will notice cooler numbers inside the bay. 60s and 50s at the coastline, of course much cooler there with that patchy fog. breezy conditions, windy picking up throughout the day, cooler in the bay area. rain in the part north. some of that energy drops in our direction throughout the weekend. today 73 in san jose. 69 in fremont. only 62 degrees in daly city. and 64 in half moon bay. east bay numbers 78 in

brentwood, 77 antioch. north bay cool at the coast. further inland you will sneak in some more sunshine. still a comfortable 75 degrees in the napa valley. next couple of days, we are going to see what looks like a much cooler weekend ahead compared to the last couple of days and temperatures will continue to drop. next monday and tuesday, temperatures warm up. but on mother's day, yup, it's going to be cooler, partly cloudy skies, there is even a slight -- just a slight chance of a few showers. all right. let's check on that traffic now with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. and we are going to talk about minneapolis again because i just mention -- about mass transit transit again. it's free but ace train number one is 10 minutes behind. no delay on all other mass

transit. we just learned the dumbarton bridge the roadwork is picked up so westbound 84 good to go. couple of headlights you heading towards the toll plaza. eastbound fine. san mateo bridge, 66 miles per hour so top speeds all the way across the span. we'll make this bigger and show you what we're talking about. the right side of the screen is the commute direction. a 13-minute drive from hayward toward foster city and the peninsula and coming off the high-rise is great as well and your silicon valley commute no problems. we are doing pretty well for the start of the friday morning commute so so far we are seeing friday light traffic out there which is great news. coming around the bend that's westbound 237 you can see the drive time 6 minutes from 880 towards 101. at the bay bridge toll plaza, still no metering lights. looks great all across the upper deck. and again, just ace train number one is our biggest issue now and it's about 7 minutes behind schedule. remember kcbs, our radio
