injured. no word on suspect information. we will be following this throughout the morning for you here on early edition saturday. it is 8:01 a.m. thanks for joining us today. >> a cooling pattern for the weekend. temperatures cooling down. that trend will continue warming up again by mid-week. partly cloudy skies, bit of patchy fog here and there around the coastline this morning. in and around the bay. again, we'll hang onto filtered sunshine through the day and cooler temperatures as the winds ramp up here, across the region. also, we'll be taking a look at flooding conditions in the midwest here today. severe flooding along the mississippi river. as we look at this map here, little green boxes are all counties that have flood warnings up at this hour. big snow melt, combined with

torrential downpours, associated with strong thunderstorm activities, has been sweeping through the southeast, the last few months, adding to the problems there. you see most of the return showing up on radar at this hour. south of st. louis, they'll be looking at heavy rain there today. and add to the flooding woes. this is a seasonal pattern for the midwest. looks like it'll be record flooding levels there as a result of a combination of the heavy rain and severe snow melt. >> we do have pictures of the mighty mississippi this morning. all eyes on that river, people bracing for more massive flooding from the midwest to the gulf coast communities. along the mississippi river, they're facing the possibility of evacuation. one area of the river near memphis is expected to crest at 48 feet this weekend. that is 14 feet above flood stage. record river levels, some dating as far back as the 1920s are expected to be broken this

weekend. >> new this morning: three sailors are waking up safe and sound after their boat hit some rocks along the san francisco bay. coast guard and san francisco firefighters sailed up to a jetty next to the golden gate yacht club, hit some rocks across from the marina green. all the sailors were wearing rife vests and nobody with injured. the city of san jose is bracing for more cinco de mayo celebrations. the home playoff game for the sharks tomorrow. business owners are cleaning up after thursday's rowdy behavior. four businesses near highway 101 were damaged. one man was stomped in the head. another stabbed. in all, seven people were arrested. police say it was a small group of bad apples in an other-wise friendly crowd thursday night. police don't expect more rowdy behavior, but they're going to monitor cinco de mayo activity or trouble spots in the downtown and foothill areas today and

tomorrow. we did have that shooting that we just reported to you. the triple shooting. we'll be following that for you throughout the day. >> san ramon police officer making his first court appearance yesterday. louis lombardi charged with several conspiracies. part of a growing scandal involving the narcotics enforcement team. he didn't enter a plea. his commander and two other officers are facing similar charges. san francisco is telling the feds back off. the city is cutting illegal immigrants more slack on the criminals who will soon be let go. >> it could be a little roomier in san francisco jail come june 1st. that's when sheriff michael hennessy will begin allowing illegal immigrants out of jail who are caught for misdemeanors, even if immigration and customs enforcement officials want to detain them. >> local law enforcement is trying to prevent local crime and trying to get people to come forward as witnesses, come forward as victims and not to

get mixed up in the immigration business. >> the sheriff says american citizens wouldn't be held in jail for low-level crimes like shoplifting and neither should immigrants, whether they are legal or not. they won't stay in jail if they're charged with having less than an ounce of marijuana, driving without a license, or for an open container. under our own rules, we don't set out misdemeanors dealing with violence, dealing with weapons, anything to deal with sex offense. >> anyone charged with a felony will stay in jail. it's yet another chapter since san francisco became a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants. in november 2009, laws were lucid for undocumented workers who drove without a license. if they are stopped, they are allowed time to find someone to drive their car and avoid getting it towed. since then, the number of towed cars has dropped dramatically. >> the sanctuary city policy is

blatantly illegal. >> howard epstein is the former chair of the san francisco republican party. he says he is fine with legal immigration, but believes this time the sheriff has gone too far. >> has no right to be in the country to begin with. so, there's you know, they don't have the right, the same rights as i do or you do to get out of, get out of jail free card. >> state lawmakers are discussing a bill right now that would allow other california cities to opt-out of the federal program. assembly men tom ohmano introduced that last month. ed lee will share his views on illegal immigration, plus san francisco status as a sanctuary city. up to 2,000 people expected to turn out in pleasanton this morning to honor the memory of police officers who died in the line of duty. a 10 kilometer race is going to start in about 15 minutes at

shadow cliffs regional park. today the u.s. plans to release videos of osama bin laden taken at his secret compound in pakistan. they reportedly show him strolling around the grounds and making propaganda tapes that were never sent out. the videos are among the data seized by that u.s. navy seal team that raided the compound and killed bin laden. the other day, president obama thanked troops just back from afghanistan at fort campbell kentucky. he says because of the incredible skill and courage of military professionals, the terrorist leader of 9/11 will never threaten america again. the president told 60 minutes that their safety was his biggest concern. >> what was the most difficult part? you had to decide, this was your decision?

around the bay. we'll see some upper 60s and low 70s across the interior. generally this cooling pattern will continue into the beginning of the week. we're looking at plenty of blue sky out there this morning. we see a bit of haze around the bay here. patchy fog at the coast. temperatures this morning in the upper 40s to low 50s. pretty much throughout the area here as again, we have shifted from the offshore breeze that brought us all warm temperatures here mid-week. the winds have shifted to more of an onshore component. that's a result of the cool down. you see out there, partly cloudy and cooler through the weekend. patchy fog at the coast and around the bay. temperatures will hover in the mid- to low 60s here. little warmer inland. could hit the low 70s there. cooler yet tomorrow. the cooling trend will continue as we see the remnants of this weak frontal boundary right here, moving into the bay area today. notice how it thins rapidly as it approaches the region here. it's ushering in cooler air and a mix of clouds, pretty much

what you're looking at out your window this morning with partly cloudy conditions. breezy, wind out of the west, northwest. will result in the cooling temperatures that we see today and will continue through tomorrow. come mid-week, we're going to warm it up again as winds shift back to an offshore direction and send the temperatures back into the 80s across the interior. for the short-term here and through mother's day. we'll continue with a cooling trend and slight chance of light showers. now, best chance of any rain would be through the wee hours of the morning here into early tomorrow. even at that, i expect it to stay along the coast and probably look like drizzle if anything else. i don't think it's going to ruin everybody's parade or ball game out there this weekend as cool temperatures will be the prevalent weather factor for us. again, looking for upper 50s to low 60s right at the beach and along the peninsula.

inland, around the bay, expect mid- to low 60s. as you move inland, further, we'll look for upper 60s, low 70s today, take a couple degrees off this for tomorrow. we'll be mainly in the mid-60s range for most of the interior, come tomorrow. as we see the fog lingering in and around the bay, small craft advisory is up. winds pick up out of the west, northwest through the day. gusting 20 to 30 around the region. so it's going to be a bit blustery out there. as we get a look at the 5-day, we keep clouds around here. temperatures through the weekend. let's push it off into a 7-day forecast. we can expect mid-week clearing here. temperatures warm up slightly again, only to cool just in time for next weekend. that's kind of a bad pattern here, as we should have the good weather on the weekend, but all in all, we will look for that cooling trend to continue right into the beginning of the week before we see things warm up again for mid-week.

without the confines of a prison cell. a man and woman in the 50-degree water drowning after their small boat had capsized. it was something they never trained for. >> i held his head above the water, was trying to feel for a pulse. >> unfortunately the man didn't make it. >> the woman who was saved returned the next day to thank the men. now the men may be thanked in another way. >> they can actually receive through heroic efforts, actually rescuing people. it was extraordinary. we are looking at seeing if something we can do for it. >> the crew, at the time we interview them, nevertheless,

in cinco de mayo. more rivalry expected this weekend. flooding continuing in the midwest and southeast. now expectations at a number of rivers will reach the highest levels ever recorded. and right now, we are following breaking news for you down in san jose. police are investigating a triple shooting that left two men dead and sent a boy to the hospital. that happened about three hours ago on mount prieta drive. no word on how badly the boy was injured. no word from san jose police on the suspects that they are looking for this morning. floodwaters drenching parts of the midwest. forecasters say it could get worse before it gets better. not the case in the bay area. we see looking across the golden gate here. cool temperatures, big cool down

from where we were mid-week. upper 80s down into the upper 60s and low 70s this weekend. for mothers day festivities and as mentioned, the rain and snow melt continuing to cause problems in the midwest as we see here. strong thunderstorm activity today. adding to weather woes there. that'll add to severe weather they had for the last several weeks. all contributing to record high levels of floodwaters on the mississippi. records may be broken when it comes to water levels there. some people may be forced to leave their homes behind. >> reporter: a flood of historic proportions expand its reach. from the midwest to the gulf coast, officials are bracing for massive flooding. one area of the mississippi

river near memphis expected to crest at 48 feet this weekend. 14 feet above flood stage. despite the threat, the mayor of memphis says they are well prepared. >> we see no shortage of manpower or material. >> i saw a lot of people leaving. i just laughed. >> local, state and federal officials, however, are preparing for the worst. the national guard is helping with evacuations, fema is coordinating federal support as the coast guard plans to close a portion of the mississippi river to ship traffic friday. in louisiana, u.s. army corps of engineers will open a spillway to reduce the volume and velocity of the mississippi river. >> we're doing everything we can

to mitigate the impact, any additional challenges that will be caused by the opening of these spillways. >> the floods could also present a double whammy for states like alabama, georgia and tennessee, recently hit by a slew of devastating tornados. in washington, i'm nicole collins. it is the one-year anniversary of a murder mystery locally and the search continues this morning. for the person who kills a nursing student from fairfield, one year ago. officers found the body of carl ley. family and friends placed a massive search for the woman when she never returned from a barnes & noble store. fairfield officers say they still consider this an active investigation. the city of san francisco about to further treatment of local immigrants. starting june 1st, sheriff michael hennessy will begin

allowing illegal immigrants out of jail if they're sited only for misdemeanors. that includes shoplifting, possessing less than an ounce of pot. the released will happen if immigration officials want continued detention. when charged with a felony, will stay in jail. tomorrow, mayor ed lee is going to appear on sunday early addition to get his views on this issue. the city of san jose bracing for more cinco de mayo celebrations. they're hoping everyone will be able to celebrate accordingly. business owners are still cleaning up after thursday's rally behavior. four businesses near highway 101 were damaged and some business owners still trying to understand why this happened. >> not really sure why these people do that. damage other people's property. it's not right.

>> there was also some evidence of other violence occurring. one man was stomped in the head, another stabbed. in all, seven people were arrests. a vallejo raid on the suspected chop shop yielding 31 stolen cars. chp officers say all the cars were vandalized, but not all of them had been taken apart. officers arrested one man in connection with that operation. thursday's raid is the second one in the last month. authorities found the property or parts from nine vehicles in april. the decision of a gang injunction proposal now lies in the hands of an oakland judge. the audience overflowed from yesterday's closing arguments. 40 alleged gang members in the fruit dale neighborhood. the city attorneys office is looking for that injunction. there are new questions about the injunction's future, john rousseau is stepping down to

take a job in alameda. >> most of the people lists in the injunction, foreign minister, he says he should be held responsible for the u.s. raid that killed osama bin laden. he called the raid a violation of pakistan's sovereignity. the u.s. plans to release videos of osama bin laden taken at that secret compound in pakistan. they reportedly show him strolling around the ground and making propaganda tapes that were never sent out. the videos are among the data seized by a u.s. navy seal team

that raided the compound and kills bin laden. nasa says the launch of the space shuttle endeavor has been delayed again. the shuttle was originally scheduled to lift off for its final mission on april 29th. that was scrubbed because of an electrical failure. nasa says the next launch attempt will be no earlier than may 16th. technicians will repair and retest the flawed electrical system, blamed for that delay. patrons at a texas waffle house were enjoying breakfast when this happened. three masked men walked in and robbed the restaurant. surveillance camera caught it all on tape. the thieves got away and police are now on the hunt. investors are debating whether american drivers will pay less for gas this summer, but a better than expected jobs report from april was overshadows by money worries overseas. alexis christoforous has more

from new york. >> reporter: relief is expected to come soon at the gas pumps. crude oil plunged 15% last week to $97 a barrel. prices stabilized some analysts predict prices will fall this summer. could lead to a drop in global demand for oil. commodities fell across the board. silver sank 27%, sugar lost 13%. the stronger u.s. dollar also led to the selloff. commodities like oil and silver are sold in dollars. when the dollar is strong, it becomes more expensive for other countries to buy them. on wall street, concerns about europe's finances overshadowed a better jobs report. delta airlines airlines is offering retirement incentives. it's looking for ways to cut

quarter to 9:00 now on a saturday morning. they're not supposed to last. that's a big selling point for those take out utensils marketed as being good for the environment. julie watts reports a lot of knives, forks and spoons are coming out of composting facilities pretty much the way they came in. >> reporter: diners of this outdoor cafe like more than a food, they also like the cutlery. >> it's great. >> it's a nicer texture. doesn't taste as plasticy. >> reporter: it's compostable. >> this is after a 60 to 90 day composting process. >> reporter: jack macy says

these pieces of ware were finished out of compost. >> basically intact. >> they're not the only green utensils not living up to consumer expectations. >> it's very frustrating, consumers are being duped, they're nationally confused. there's so much mislabelling. >> those words are really meaningless. >> that's because environmentalists say everything is biodegradable. some call that kind of labelling green washing. >> you're making a product look green when it really isn't green. the consumer believes that there's environmental benefit associated with that product. that's why they label it that way. >> scott smith line says even many utensils certified as compostable aren't breaking down under commercial composting conditions. >> i'm not really aware of any

composter that wants utensils. they need to have a certain thickness for function, but that same thickness acts as a barrier to microbial degradation. >> tests show they break down within 180 days of commercial composting operation. the average commercial composting cycle is less than half that. so why the discrepancy? smith line says it's about money. >> a composters goal is to make good quality compost as quickly as they can. that's how they make money. >> reporter: what happens to all those utensils that get sent to commercial composters? most get screened out at the very beginning of the process and end up going to landfills, just the fate these diners were hoping to avoid. >> caterware says they'll break down by 30% in a landfill over three months. we're still trying to figure out

where to toss these, environmentalists are calling for more realistic industry standards for compostable utensils. back to our weather forecast today and tomorrow, all the moms out there, possible umbrellas? >> i'm not sure about umbrellas. jackets for sure. we'll be cooler here this weekend. there's a slight chance of showers, but probably just drizzle activity. most of it will likely fall in the wee hours of the morning. as we look across the golden gate here right now. we see those partly cloudy skies with blue skies shining through. no moisture to speak of on the ground this morning. and again, we will expect these conditions to remain cloudy and cool here through the weekend as we see the blue at the moment. far cry from where we were mid-week, a lot of mid- to upper 80s around the bay. now we're going to be looking at upper 60s to mid-70s for day time highs today.

cooler yet. come tomorrow, as we can expect through the afternoon, partly cloudy and cooler conditions to prevail throughout the bay. little patchy fog at the bay and back at the coast. we'll be looking at fog as winds shifted to more of an onshore breeze, cooling things down from what we saw mid-week. here's the week weather disturbance that moved into the area. it's thinning and shredding apart. thin line of clouds out there. it is ushering in the wind shift and cooler air mass across the bay area for the weekend. chance of light showers out of this energy. will clip the bay area through the wee hours of the morning into tomorrow. as i mentioned, it'll be very slight, more clouds than rain. if we do see anything, it'll look like drizzle shower activity with maybe a few hundreds of an inch precipitation. partly cloudy, breezy and cool, through the weekend into the beginning the week here. winds should shift to more of an onshore component. which means we'll see a warm-up just in time for mid-week.

we look at the computer expectations, as far as rainfall, we see most of the moisture remaining well to our north. cool off the coast, may produce coastal drizzle and a few drops here and there is about it. your mother's day will be mostly dry and cool, however, as we will see cooler temperatures than today with our warmer spots today into the upper 60s to low 70s, we'll look for mid- to upper 60s out there for tomorrow. down a couple degrees from what you see here today. as you move back to the water, mid- to low 60s, likely to prevail with upper 50s and low 60s at the beach. that's a big cool down from what we enjoyed this week. we'll look for fog at the coast. patchy fog in and around the bay. breezy conditions, winds should build out of the west, northwest in the 10 to 20 miles an hour range. higher gusts expected. hanging onto the cloud cover through the weekend and into the beginning of the week. then you see, as the winds shift to more of an offshore direction, we bring back the

several years. as the chicks hatched, kids were invited to name the new residents. two blind sea lions made their appearance yesterday at the zoo. they're the best of friends. one of them is silent knight. he was found on a beach in december. he had been shot in the face with a gun. and then henry, who you see swimming around, he was rescued a year ago at crescent city. he was starving and already blind when they found him. the marine mammal center nursed both of them back to health. they've truly become, i guess we're not going to see silent night in this video, but that's henry, he's doing well. they've been bff. >> they're cute. >> baby rhino. makes her debut at a wildlife park in florida. she tips the scales at 50

information. the city of san francisco about to soften the treatment of illegal immigrants. sheriff michael hennessy will allow illegal imgrants out of jail if they're only sited for misdemeanors, rather than holding them for the feds. divesting less than an ounce of pot. the releases will happen even if federal immigration officials want them to continue to be helped. >> local law enforcement is trying to prevent local crime and trying to get people to come forward as witnesses, to come forward as victims and not get mixed up in the immigration business. >> anyone charged with a felony will stay in jail. this is the latest developments since san francisco became a sanctuary city a year and a half ago. tomorrow, ed lee will appear on sunday edition to give his views on the issue. this weekend, the city of san jose bracing for more cinco

de mayo celebrations. plus the home playoff games for the sharks tomorrow, a lot of activity down there. today, business owners are cleaning up after thursday's rowdy behavior. guised as the celebration for cinco de mayo. four businesses near highway 101 were damaged. one man was stomped in the head. another man stabbed. in all, seven people were arrested. police say it was a small group of bad apples in an otherwise friendly crowd thursday night. they don't expect anymore rowdy behavior, but they will monitor cinco de mayo activity or trouble spots in the downtown and foothill areas today and tomorrow. a hayward father credits the family dog with helping to save the life of his teenaged daughter during a fire. even though the dog has been nationally recognized for its special deed, the animal is making it nearly impossible for the family to find a new place to live.

>> reporter: no crate or kennel when this canine takes to the skies. >> right next to us, first class. >> reporter: what do you expect from a dog named diamond? virgin america flew the pitbull and her family to los angeles in a plane all their own. she had the run of the aisles because she was being honored. the spca in los angeles gave her a national award for being the hero dog of the year. >> she slept in my room and woke me up with one bark. >> reporter: last october, darryl and his two daughters were nearly killed when their apartment caught on fire in the night. darryl dropped his 9-year-old daughter out of the second story window to save her. firefighters broke a window and pulled him out. >> they found diamond on top of a mattress where my oldest daughter was under, she was

trying to protect her, but she had completely passed out. >> usually a dog would go in the back room and hide from the fire. it's not typical to see the dog in a protective mode like that. >> reporter: the family spent weeks in the hospital recovering from burns. the problem now, they cannot find a place to live. darryl says 30 places in the haworth area have turned them down because they have a pitbull. but after diamond saved their lives, he says he's not willing to compromise. >> she's not going nowhere. nowhere. i'm not willing to give her up. if they won't let me rent there, then i'm not moving there. >> now they're living with his sister here in haworth. the dog is in martinez. they're hoping to bring them together, live in this area. they're hoping no cats, diamond is afraid of them. today the u.s. plans to

release videos of osama bin laden taken at a secret compound in pakistan. we're waiting for a cbs news special report on that. could happen within the next few minutes or later on this afternoon. the videos will be released today, we're told. reports say the videos show him making propaganda tapes that were never sent out. they were among the data seized by the team that raided the compound and killed bin laden. president obama thanks troops just back from afghanistan at port campbell kentucky. the terrorist leader who financed 9/11 will never again threaten america. the commander in chief also met privately with the navy seals who killed bin laden. he told them, job well done. the president tells 60 minutes their safety was his biggest concern. what was the most difficult part? you had to decide, this was your

the sony corporation and tens of millions of its playstation users bracing themselves for yet another cyber attack this weekend. on the consumer watch, julie watts reports, this time, hackers are threatening to go public with data. >> it has been a really big hit for their public relations and for sony's image in general. >> chris meyer is one of the 77 million playstation users whose personal information may have been stolen two weeks ago. it looks like that was just the beginning of sony's problems. >> a group of hackers are

planning another attack on sony's servers. >> it's the same group responsible for the last attack. they plan to publicize customer information like names, addresses and credit card numbers in retaliation for the way sony handled their last attack, waiting six days to notify some 100 million users of a security breach. sony execs did apologize for that, bowing in traditional japanese style. this weekend's pending attack would be the third in just over a month. the first came from an activist group called anonymous. san francisco hacker for posting the information online. >> necessary say they sought access to some of sony's servers, the ones that had not yet been shut down. >> sony shut down some of their servers as well as the playstation network after the

to giving a whole new sound. city leaders broke ground on the new san francisco jazz center in haze valley yesterday. >> they're having trouble breaking ground. >> they're trying to break ground. it'll be the first stand-alone center dedicated to jazz in the u.s. the $60 million facility will provide artisan and artistic programs scheduled to open in the fall of 2012. some very excited kids showed off their skills in fremont the other day. so excited, golden state, road warriors. nationally known teams treated students to a demo of wheelchair basketball. the road warriors were prompted by the golden state warriors. many team members are former para olympians that played internationally. mother's day is tomorrow. most americans will be treating
