your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. new details on the man who tried to rush a cockpit on a sfo flight. a fire damages two homes in the east bay. we'll have the latest on the arson investigation. good morning, everyone. it is monday, may 9. i'm sydnie kohara. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. we begin with breaking news. a security scare in the air, a passenger tries to get into the cockpit of a flight bound for sfo. the tsa and fbi are investigating. sharon chin reports on the in- flight fight. >> reporter: investigators are still trying to find out more about this man. they say he has a passport from

yemen and they are still trying to find out why he rushed the cockpit. san francisco airport police say it happened on american airlines flight 1561 from laguardia to sfo with a stopover in chicago. someone over modesto a passenger apparently ran up and started yelling on the cockpit door. among the 156 people on board, the flight crew and a retired san mateo police officer and secret service agent wrestled him to the ground. >> a flight attendant that was in first class section was able to grab onto that passenger there and requested help from other flight attendants, at which point another flight attendant and i believe it was two other passengers from the immediate area of the cockpit were able to put the passenger on the

ground. >> reporter: they used plastic handcuffs and kept him in first class. the 28-year-old man has a passport from yemen. here are some pictures from twitter of the suspect. there were no threats or weapons found on board. police say he was treated at a hospital for some scrapes to his elbow then taken to county jail in redwood city where he is this morning charged with the federal offense of interfering with a flight crew. none of the passengers or crew was injured and with all that happened, flight landed on time at 9:12 last night. flight operations were not disrupted here at sfo. so still a lot of questions as this investigation continues, though. sydnie? >> all right, that is certainly good news, sharon chin at sfo this morning. thank you. and security threats on two other u.s. flights caused them to be diverted yesterday. first a delta airlines jet was heading from detroit to san diego when it was diverted to

alburqueque. a note was found in the bathroom with the word bomb on it though officials wouldn't confirm it. then a continental flight from houston to chicago landed in st. louis after a passenger friday to open a door during the flight. firefighters in contra costa county still on the scene of a house fire in oakley trying to put out hot spots. that fire breaking out about 11:00 last night in a two-story house. when firefighters arrived, they found flames shooting from a second floor. in all, 10 fire engines were involved. firefighters able to use water curtains on each side to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent homes. that fire now under investigation. we are going to have a live report coming up at 5:00 this morning. and today pg&e will start testing natural gas pipeline in mountain view and antioch. it is all part of an effort to ensure safe operating pressures following the deadly san bruno disaster. hydrostatic testing starts in a

half hour in mountain view. the tests involve filling a section of pipe with water at high pressure. later at antioch workers will vent natural gas from a section of pipe that's to be tested. pg&e says there may be a smell of gas in the area for a short time but not to be alarmed. 4:34. this morning bay area teachers will rally in san francisco to kick off a we have been protests aimed at -- a week of protest aimed at saving their budgets. they will rally at puc at 8 a.m. and head over to sacramento to put pressure on the legislature there. they are trying to save teacher jobs. one educator from san jose says there are already five fewer class days at his san jose high school. >> if this budget becomes an all-cuts budget, we can be having 20 days. that's a whole month of instruction that our students will be shorted. that's the type of consequence portfolio we don't get these taxes continued. >> after spending several days talking to legislators. teachers plan a large rally at

the capital this friday. that's the day teachers lay off notices will take effect. let's get a quick look at traffic and weather on this monday morning. we start with kristy seifkin. good morning. >> good morning. it's a cool start to the morning but no rain in the picture. you can see here take a look at satellite, that low sitting to the east of us, that system bringing showers to the central valley and to the sierra but for the most part we should be dry, slight chance of sprinkles in the east bay later on this afternoon but should be a nice day. if you step outside this morning though pretty cool. a little cooler than yesterday. 51 for oakland, 39 napa, 49 pacifica and redwood city. temperatures today will be about three to five degrees warmer than yesterday. mostly sunny skies, 63 was the high in oakland, 58 in pacifica, 67 in san jose also 67 in livermore and 71 in fairfield so we are breaking into those low 70s as you can

see here on our extended forecast. partly to mostly sunny skies today a little bit breezy and then tuesday we see a lot of sunshine a little bit warmer as we continue later into the week starting to cool off. you will see next weekend chance of showers back in the forecast. and i'll tell you more about that in a bit. but first, let's go to elizabeth with a check on your traffic. >> all right, thank you, kristy. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. learning of roadwork on the lower deck so eastbound 80 towards oakland various lanes blocked until 6:00 this morning. into the city, traffic looks great right now approaching the toll plaza. we have one wind advisory. chp issued one for the san mateo bridge overnight so watch out for that. two hands on the steering wheel crossing towards the peninsula from hayward. the marin county ride looks great. southbound 101 they have not done a lane change across the golden gate bridge yet so clear across the span heading into san francisco. from novato easy ride down through san rafael. so we have a marin county check. we'll get a south bay check

now. you can see all our sensors, that zero is up dating now, but all of our live traffic sensors are showing top speeds, green, over 40 miles per hour. and coming through downtown san jose, there is live look at the northbound traffic on 280 approaching the 880 interchange. east bay 880 through oakland no problems past the coliseum and mass transit, bart running about 20 trains all on time. bart, ace, muni metro and caltrain all on time. remember kcbs, our radio partners, at 740-am and 106.9- fm. back to you. >> thank you. president obama says he was aware of the risks when he ordered special forces to get osama bin laden in pakistan. the president's comments all part of an interview that aired last night on cbs' "60 minutes." it was focused on the decision- making process that led to a team of navy seals storming a compound and killing the al qaeda leader. the president said despite

months of intelligence work, there was really no way to determine beforehand that bin laden was actually inside the compound. >> at the end of the day this was still a 55/45 situation. we could not say definitively that he was there. had he not been there, there would have been significant consequences. he decided the benefits outweighed the risks. the president said he lost no sleep over the possibility that bin laden would be killed saying he errands his fate. there are reports out of pakistan that several hundred taliban fighters held a memorial service for bin laden today in the country's tribal region. pakistani media reported a name that of the cia station chief in islamabad but the name

that's being reported is incorrect. the mississippi floodwaters are expected to crest near record levels at memphis tomorrow. officials are going door to door warning people to evacuate. hundreds of homes have already been evacuated. today a spillway will be opened to release pressure on levees in names. evacuations continue as that water continues to run south down the river. it's the highest the river has been by tomorrow since 1937 in terms of flooding and cresting. so hopefully a little relief in sight. looks like the weather is holding up today. but they have quite the mess. >> yes. but the problem, all of that water is still continuing to head down the mississippi into other parts of louisiana and it's going to be bad down there for them for quite some time. >> mother nature has had quite a year to say the least.

he had a yemeni passport and got on the plane in new york. he was handcuffed by passengers and flight attendant and the plane landed safely. gas prices are finally on their way back down after 44 straight days of increases. and that could be just the beginning of prices going down. some good news on this monday. national average for a gallon at 3.98. it's higher here in the bay area. 4.32 in san francisco and in oakland if you fill up, 4.27 in oakland and san jose. >> i'm real skeptical about whether or not the prices are really going down. if they do, it's going to be five and ten cents, to make us feel good but it isn't going to happen. >> i'm not a pessimist. so, yes i believe it. yes. and it's coming down soon. >> some analysts say gas could drop as much as 50 cents a gallon by the end of june. the price of a cab ride in

san francisco might be going up. the municipal transportation agency will hold town hall meetings this week. if the rate increase is approved it will be the first since 2003. under the initial plan the rate to catch a cab would stay the same while the rates for wait time and driving distance could go up. the tech industry is experiencing a hiring boom even though job growth in the nation is slow. the tech industry will add about 150,000 jobs this year. among the companies hiring, palo alto-based neighborhood. stanford student matt bush is one of the new hires. >> i know a lot about the company. i thought a lot about it. i have written pages on it. >> google, dm wear, hewlett- packard and motorola among the other local companies looking to hire. good news for kids getting out of college. facebook is playing a bigger goal in how people are

getting their news. the pugh research center says facebook funnels an average of 3% of traffic to 21 major new sites that allow their data to be tracked. still that's only a small fraction of what google does. that search giant supplies about 30% of traffic to top news sites. the east bay spca has a problem finding homes for some of their smallest residents. the shelter says they have an overflow of homeless chihauhaus. they have created chihauhau palooza to get these dogs into new homes. their chihauhau population has doubled in recent years partly fueled by an image that the small dogs are cute little purse pets during the chihauhau campaign, all small dog adoptions are 50% off. >> i guess that all came from, what, beverly hills chihauhau, paris hilton, right. >> they actually shipped a bunch of dogs from here to new york. >> they did. >> they will find homes one way or the other. >> i hope so. 4:45. first of its kind a study of

security official in san jose preparing for the worse. yesterday they held a terror prevention exercise at a vta station. the timing was a coincidence. one week after the death of i osama bin laden. the exertion was called visibilities prevention. security first from homeland security, tsa and san jose sheriff's department act as deterrents to terrorist activity just by being there. >> i don't know how terrorists act exactly but it would seem their presence would make them move on. >> as we have learn from intelligence gathered at bin laden's compound he may have been planning to target u.s. rail systems. a mother charged with killing her young daughter is going to trial in florida today: 25-year-old casey anthony is accused of killing the 2-year-old girl three years

ago. she pled not guilty and says babysitters kidnapped her daughter. if convicted, she can get the death penalty. jury selection begins today. we could learn the official launch date for the space shuttle endeavour. nasa will talk about mechanical repairs to the shuttle. last week the agency announced the earliest day for blastoff week a week from today next monday. the launch is the second-to- last launch for nasa's spaceshuttlee program. cooler today, patchy fog at the coast, temperatures in the 40s and 50s and some high 30s inland. this afternoon a few degrees warmer than yesterday. in those inland spots, 20% chance of rain around the bay and the coast. we are going to see mostly sunny conditions, still breezy but not nearly as windy as yesterday. the reason that we have that slight chance of rain you can see here on satellite is that low that's passing through, we

previously thought. researchers from the yale child studies center interviewed parents of more than 50,000 kids in south korea. they found one in every 38 children showed signs of autism. the symptoms from severe to mild. the rate is much higher than previous estimates of one in 10 in the u.s. bryan stow is in a coma still after being attacked -- excuse me -- attacked at a dodgers game five weeks ago. his mother spent mother's day by her son's bedside. doctors say the longer stow stays in a vegetative state, the more likely he will remain that way forever. but his mother remains hopeful even though she is not yet seen any signs of recovery. >> it was odd i was looking at his eyes to see if there is any movement or dreaming and there is nothing there. >> everybody is rooting for guy but so far there have been no
